When I determined that my daughter has been crazy about Strawberry Shortcake, then we knew that this was the way to go rather than buy separate small booklets. In fact, if you don't have any of the small booklets, then this book is a must. It's a great savings. It's beautifully illustrated on thicker paper.

It's great

This is 6 stories in one and I'm pleased with the "moral of the story" of each of them. It's a nice size and colorful, etc. My 2 year old daughter loves it and will even more once she understands all the words.

Great Buy

This collection is a must for any Strawberry Shortcake fan. It is really hard to find a variety of Strawberry Shortcake books in England, so I was thrilled to see that this book included quite a few stories. My 3 year old twin girls make me read these stories over and over again and they are all good. We also love "Strawberry Shortcake Goes To School".

There's no white on the pages.

This is the most colorful children's book I've ever seen, and yet it isn't overly busy with color. Each two-page spread has a single picture with a colorful border around it. The text is written into the negative space on the picture itself.

Although the book is for our 5-year-old daughter, our son, 6, spent about an hour looking at the pictures and said, "I wish I knew how to read well enough to read all of this." I replied that I could read it to him, to which he said, "Yeah, but I want to read it over and over right now!"

The stories are as good as any Strawberry Shortcake DVD's, with good moral lessons about friendship, patience, honesty, etc...

And what a great price!

This book is more than text and paper; it is an invitation into a world created by the Queen of modern Gothic literature. I have read all of Ms. Brite's works, and this first glimpse in original form is perhaps her best...A TRUE AND LITERAL MASTERPIECE! I kept it in bed for weeks.

This is truly THE MASTERPIECE from Ms. Brite. It took me a couple of years to track down a copy. It was DEFINITELY worth the time, trouble, and money! I would encourage true fans of gothic and horror to get a copy to read at any price!

This is the first book I ever read by Poppy Z. Brite, and ever since I have been enchanted by her works. I think her novels are better than short stories, as there is more room for detail and development, but that is not to say that her short stories are lacking in richness. This is a good work to start with, if you are new to Poppy Z. Brite's work, because it gives you a glimpse into the world of her writing. Each story makes you crave more of her witty, erotic, dark prose. A must-have for any fan of Gothic horror.

Poppy Z Brite delivers a compelling decadent and darkly erotic brand of horror. Swamp foetus is a collection of shorts stories that brings out the best of her lush gothic imagination. If you need any thing to help sell this to you it may be worth knowing that Steve and Ghost return for a short trip round urban bizarre in New York. Dont be fooled into thinking that this its all there is worth while between the covers, oh no there is the festering, verdirgis seduction of a truly accomplished authoress hooking your soft flesh and draging you into a skewed world that repulses yet makes you want to be a part of it! So go on put the sisters of mercy on your hi-fi pour your self some red wine and slip into decadence and dark beauty

First I would like to mention that this book is still in print, but under a different tittle. It is called "Wormwood."

This is an excellent book of short stories by the amazing Ms. Brite. THese short pieces do a great job in showing how Poppy thinks and writes, and give you a good grasp of her style. They do not hold up to the very high standards of her novels though. If you are to read her short stories and dislike them, don't give up and discredit her until you've read a novel of hers (I suggest starting with Lost Souls.)

Breaking the Cycle of Injustice
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-15
Diane Shore and Jessica Alexander created a superior recount of the Civil Rights Movement for children of all races and ethnicities. With the talent of illustrator James Ransome, children actually experience the Civil Rights Movement through a child's lens. Each page skillfully paints real-life history with such effectiveness, children will never forget the importance of equal rights.

Shore and Alexander complement the beautiful pages with poetic verses that are exact, visual, and very telling of a race crisis in American history. Their action words help break that cycle. The peaceful demonstrations are captured powerfully with vivid colors of mustard, sugar, and ketchup being poured on top of the heads of African-Americans wishing to eat at a "Whites Only" lunch counter. To watch a child's interpretation of this visual alone is worth owning the book. That is because they see, feel, and taste discrimination based on the color of someone's skin. Children can then easily learn that racism should not be.

If there is one children's book for all races that delivers Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message of peace and justice for all, Shore and Alexander, together with James Ransome, mastered it for all times. That makes THIS IS THE DREAM valuable to children for reading and discussing all year long.

The inside-covers' dream board is exceptionally unique and promotes Dr. King's dream for humanity.

Having grown up during the civil rights era, I find this book has great teaching potential for the non-violent movement. Today so many children see the violence on TV and in real life and this book depicts the historical highlights of the era. James Ransome's illustrations are a complement to the clever rhymed verse and his collage technique on the front and back covers and the inside covers tells the story in pictures. I think the sequence of the book portrays the main events of the era that ultimately changed the way of our nation. This is a book for everyone. The rhymes convey the message in a concise manner which the youngest reader can understand. I think this book should be in every school library.

"With Many Small Triumphs They Strengthened their Cause"

Many of the reviews already state this, but let me just reiterate: What a fine classroom tool you will find in "This is the Dream"! The story of the civil rights movement is summarized in simple, effective rhyme. It is perfect for all ages. The beginning pages clearly portray the injustice of "separate but equal" and Jim Crow laws. The middle of the story displays the tremendous strength of those who fought, not with guns and fists, but with walking, sitting, marching. Finally, we see the today we have taken for granted. It is a powerful witness to children of what once was and what could be again if we let predjudice take hold once more.
What I particularly enjoyed was the authors' choice to not reduce the movement to the hard work of a handful of people. History books tend to single out Rosa and Martin as the impetus and the leader of the movement. Such status is misleading for children. It was a peaceful militia of millions, a team effort. This book shows the bravery of the many nameless people who changed our country.
I believe this book would be a very worthy Caldecott winner. James Ransome is a "due" illustrator. If you haven't seen his work in other books-especially "Visiting Day" and "Under the Quilt of Night"- I'd encourage you to check it out. He is a master of depicting the subtle emotions of the human face. In "This is the Dream" his rich oil paintings brings history to life once again. And his use of photographs in his artwork is daring and innovative.
This is a suberb, important book.

Great book for the young and old!

As a first grade teacher, it is sometimes hard to find a book about the civil rights movement that is age appropriate. This book has a simple rhyme and beautiful pictures. These pictures simply show the differences before, during, and after the movement. The students in my class were speechless. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!

W Polsce pozostala niewielka grupa madrych i patriotycznych ludzi i teraz mamy efekty - politycy niezbyt madrzy, wiele glupoty naokolo. Byliby sila moralna i oparciem. Jaka szkoda szkoda szkoda...

Bez upiekszania i makijazu. Podoba mi sie obiektywne spojrzenie autorki, bez upiekszania, bez podanych gotowych wnioskow.

W sumie wydaje mi sie moje zycie nijakie.

It is written with genuine talent and feelings for the hero's life. I had tears in my eyes reading about his misfortun, about meeting with his former fiance Halinka after years had passed by. The book can be a base for a great movie scenario about the hero's life, Roman Rodziewicz. It has a fascinating plot, action and a "lost great love".

W koncu bohater ksiazki zrazony do decyzji aliantow oddajacych Polske Stalinowi, osiadl w Anglii, gdzie zalozyl rodzine. Nie mogac jednak oderwac sie od swej burzliwej przeszlosci, opowiedzial to wszystko Autorce, ktora potrafila przekonujaco przekazac czytelnikowi zarowne rzetelne fakty historyczne, jak i atmosfere tamtych, dawniejszych, wojennych i powojennych czasow.

Grade 2/3 with nice arrangements. The only problem I have with this series of song books (I have several)is that the music is printed too close to the binding, so you have to nearly break the binding for the book to stay open when used. Wire binding and/or larger pages would be a big help.

If you love Cole Porter's music there is nothing better than this collection of songs. I've made use of every song. Each one of the pieces are from some of his best works. It's a nearly perfect combination of some of the greatest songs ever written. One minor disappointment is that it doesn't contain more, or that there isn't other volumes of the same book. Basically, if you need/want a collection of Porter's music there isn't any reason why you shouldn't have this book. :-).

This book was written for all of the people that enjoy learning and/or for those folks that have been presented with the formidable challenge of having Alzheimer's or caring for a loved one with this condition. I am a nurse that has recently graduated from nursing school, and what I would have given to have already absorbed the knowledge base that this book offers. After all of the "book learn'in" nurses go through, their long process of the actual patient "clinicals" begin. During this period of the education student nurses are emerged into the real time process of patient care. My first clinical rotation took place in a long term care facility and yes, I had a patient load that was often 90% comprised of Alzheimer's patients. I soon realized that I had no real knowledge base from which I could draw to care for, or more importantly understand my patients feelings.
You absolutely need not be any sort of a medical professional to comprehend the material presented in the book, however, all medical professionals absolutely should not miss the opportunity of this important read.
In short, conditions such as autism and Alzheimer's are seemingly becoming more prevalent in our society. Books like this offer at least some hope in gaining the tools needed to have the ability to help and understand these types of disease processes.
Learn and read all that you can but if you only have the time or the initiative for one.........this is the book!
Thank you,

Ms. Lokvig has stepped us through some of the most difficult behaviors and situations which may arise as we try to care for a person with dementia...the information she has lovingly and painstakingly gathered is readily accessible, as a previous reviewer has stated, so that one need not read the entire book to get to what one may need to know quickly.
I found the writing has a calming affect and is reassuring. The book is so rich with eamples of how to redirect a sticky situation. I am a professional in the field of gerontology and can recommend this fresh approach to a difficult road without hesitation.

While I was caring for my 80 year old mother, I was unable to find a useful book on dementia or Alzheimer's. Every book I read was utterly depressing and sobering. Jytte Lokvig's thoughtful and original way of working with people afflicted with this disease will make it all seem manageable. Her insight and knowledge of the condition and her approach-to-care is totally compassionate and perceptive. Through her years of working and caring for her patients, she has distilled an attitude of care that she brings home for everybody. I recommend Alzheimer's A to Z, most highly. Caregivers, buy this book! It will not only instruct you in taking care of your loved one, but will also assist you in taking care of yourself while you do.

"Alzheimer's A to Z: Secrets of Successful Caregiving" is a wonderful book for those dealing with a friend or loved one with Alzheimer's. The book is organized alphabetically by topic. These topics include agitation, baby talk, coaching, cursing, diet, driving, eating, fantasy, hallucinations, listening, medication, obsessive behavior, pets, routines, singing, undressing, vitamins, word substitution, and many others. Each topic gives examples of the specific item, suggestions on how to handle the situation, and related topics. This organization is one of the things that make this book so valuable. You don't have to completely read through the entire thing to try to find answers to your questions. Instead you can go directly to the topic. Written is a style reminiscent of a family friend helping you understand someone with Alzheimer's, it inspires confidence, empathy, and patience in the caregiver. A highly recommended read for the non-professional seeking advice and understanding when dealing with someone with Alzheimer's.

A must-have alphabet book!

Review Date: 2005-08-02
In my elementary ed. teaching classes, our reading methods teacher shared this book as a fun way to explore the alphabet and expand vocabulary with both English and ESL students.

When I had my son two years ago, my parents got him the book, and from 13 months on, he has continually asked to read it and look at the pictures. The illustrations are vivid and action-oriented, so it captures and keeps a young child's attention the whole book long. It it a great way to introduce your young child to new vocabulary words as well. For example, A is for "Arf", and I would tell my son "Doggy barking." B is for ball "Doggy caught the ball." C is for "catch", "Doggy caught the ball." He must have learned 100 words from this book alone and the short phrases/sentences I made up to add to each page describing what each doggy was doing.

This is one alphabet book a parent needs to add to his child's library! I would recommend it for any child ages 1-5

We have read this book on a near-daily basis for the last 5 months. It always brings a smile, even when Kate is recovering from a bump or scare. The dog photos are very appealing to the baby, especially the ones (Mutt, Good dog!, Jump!) where the dog's expression looks like a smile. A bonus is the wonderful photo collages that adorn the end pages front and back of the book; they are at least as good as the photos in the actual text. My husband and I fell in love with the book in the bookstore, but it has proven even more alluring to the baby. Unlike our real dog, Arf Beg Catch doesn't get up and walk away from being handled. I'm thinking about buying another copy against the day when we wear the first one out!

An outstanding alphabet book sure to become a favorite!

Adults as well as children will adore this unique alphabet book. Both the upper and lower case letters are displayed for education purposes. But the real fun of the book are the delightful and engaging photographs of the dogs in action shots. (The cover photo has me puzzled though. Has that dog been tossed up in the air?) Delightful browser as well as an educational tool for learning the alphabet.

This is funny stuff. It gave me a real chuckle.
The new edition with the hard pages is fantastic.
I use this with the 'Call of Cthulhu' roleplay game.
I recommend it for anyone who is in to the mythos.

Very well done. The poems sometimes stretch a bit, but then, it's sometimes hard for find words to rhyme with Nyarlothetep or Cthulhu. The drawings, though, are wonderful. If your intention is to twist your child, much like Wednesday Addams, then this book is essential. Personally, though, I prefer to twist myself, and this book does that very well.

The idea of parodying the typical children's ABC and 123 books by illustrating them with Lovecraft's Elder Gods just tickles my funny bone. Every little snippet of writing, including the author and artist bios, is subtly clever, and the ink drawings are perfect for the subject.

The best part is...I thought I knew a bit about it, but the book actually taught me plenty I didn't know about the Lovecraft mythos. The only complaint (and a slight one at that) is the binding looks the kind that's going to crack and fall apart after not too long, which is a pity, because I'd like it to last long enough to show my own future spawn.

Every Lovecraft fan should get one.

Granted, not all the poetry absolutely works, but for the effort and the very concept itself, it earns 5 stars. A must for
all Mythos fans and alumni of Miskatonic U. as they contemplate
their future spawn, er, children. Whatever.

I purchased this book for my son and have been happy with the contents. This book shows pictures of various Caterpillar brand construction equipment with the correct name in large colorful pictures. If you are looking for a book that includes lots of photos of different types of construction equipment and describes the function then this is for you.

This book was a big hit at Christmas with my 18-month old nephew. He opened it, climbed into his father's lap and looked at each page. The book has great pictures and the pages were easy to turn with his small hands.

We checked out this book from the library for the past 4 weeks and now I'm on here to buy it. My son LOVES it and we read it at least 2-3 times a day! It's great for the letters but also for any little one that loves construction trucks.

EXCELLENT- even for my 2 year old son!

If you are tired of all the cartoon-like, euphemistic, personified, books depicting cars/trucks/machines with smiley faces then this book is for you. My 2 year old is intrigued by the real machines he sees in the book that is also represented to him in his everyday environment. This book is definitly for older children but like I said- even younger ones will love it!

Though a Commercial for the Cat, It Is Great for Children

There are children, yes-- both boys and girls, that are extremely fascinated by large and very capable machines. In fact, if you are a parent who has to stop at every pit, new road, or excavation because you have a child who says, "Mom!/Dad!, STOP!!! I want to look at this," this book is for your family.

Children see major equipment all the time. ... Because Caterpillar had the wisdom to put these machines in a context at their level (i.e. learning the alphabet because a BIG machine begins with the letter), it makes it easier for parents and educators to help children learn the reasons why to learn to read. Each letter of the alphabet has a giant Caterpillar machine or some aspect of it that goes with it. The page features a photograph of the machine or the part with an easily understood description of it.

Caterpillar, the company, is featured in this alphabet book and I never thought this would happen. They saw the connection to children. ... I am sending this alphabet book to children of the children who grew up with sandboxes with toy equipment to move the sand around.

Though a commercial for the Cat, it is great for children. It's good! It belongs in elementary school libraries and in the home libraries of busy boys and girls. Active sandboxes demand it. . . and so do future civil engineers!

This is a cookbook with tremendous heart and soul! My copy is on its way to becoming dog-earred, and I've bought several as hostess gifts. I love to cook, own many cookbooks, and really use a select few. This is one of the select few I use. Great recipes for all: Utilitarian for the family, the working household, and for entertaining! The recipe commentary is well-written, and enticing. The recipes are very user-friendly, and delicious! I'm so pleased to purchase a cookbook that benefits a worthy cause--our public schools!

This recipe book offers both family-night recipes (everything from rice crispy squares to a yummy curry receipe) and some fabulous recipes from the best chefs in the Bay Area. The book also serves the dual purpose of helping the literacy program at a local grade school. Your stomach and your soul will be well-satiated!!
