Kennedy's first book of poems for kids was a hilarious journey into pure nonsense, all done in deft rhyme and meter. Kids are sure to like the pure unsentimental whimsy of these imaginative rhymes and the absurd characters they conjure. There hasn't been such unabashed craziness since Dr. Seuss. Noted illustrator David McPhail (of "Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore" fame) adds finely wrought black-and-white pen drawings.

"The American Indian is neither an American nor an Indian. He has the worst of one world-the white world, and is barred from the best of his own.

"This is a book on the staus of these conquered peoples living among us. It is a look at the world which exists today within our midst-a world controlled by white men, a world which grinds out new injustices, day by day..."

A selective examiniation of governmental approaches to the Indians.

Published by the Citizen's Advocate Center, a non-profit organization designed to monitor governmental programs and assure equitable treatment of all community organizations in their dealing with the government.

The Outline History of an Expedition to Califonia by XOX is a wonderful little book, verywelcom on the 150th anniversary of the infamous gold rush. Newspaper accounts of the times accompany the old fashioned cartoons that depict the various misadventures of a party of New Yorkers on their ways to the gold fields. Instead of instant riches, however, they find misery, difficulty and often death. The tongue in cheek humor and wonderfully scrappy art really captures the feeling of the time. It brings home the excitement and adventure of those who fled the boring east for the new wealth of the west. But descriptions of the abandoned wagons and tombstones, the epidemics and misery of the ocean journey, recall that these gold seekers were foolhardy in their optimism. Overall, a wonderful book, well worth the reading.

Best introduction to nucleic acid structure
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-24
This is the best introduction to nucleic acid structure available. Chapters are reviews contributed by the leading scientists of that field such as Struther Arnott, Richard Dickerson, and Alexander Rich. Coverage is broad and deep. Topics include both experimental and computational studies and unusual structures. Some topics that were not covered or only covered superficially include larger structures (nucleosome, ribosome, etc.), quantum mechanical studies, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, electrostatic interactions and solvation, protein-nucleic acid structure, spectroscopic approaches besides NMR, and ironically, drug-DNA structures, the specialty of the editor, Neidle. Extensive references in each chapter are invaluable.

It's too bad the book is so expensive. I hope OUP releases a paperback edition.

Resource for Cultivating Theological Virtues
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-16
For those who are rusty on their catechism, the theological virtues (faith, hope, and charity) relate directly to God and are infused within us rather than acquired through any action on our part, although we nourish them through prayer and the sacraments. With this little book of daily reflections on faith, hope, and charity, Fr. Morneau offers an additional resource for cultivating these virtues in our personal lives. His introduction reminds us of the fruits of the theological virtues. Through faith we attain God's blessing and peace; hope provides us with the energy to help further the reign of God; and charity calls us to live as responsible, generous people who show concern and respect for others.

Each of the four sections (faith, hope, love of God, and love of neighbor) contains seven reflections consisting of a brief introduction, meditation, question, and prayer. The meditations are taken from the work of Catholic authors, many of them poets. In an example from the love of neighbor section, Morneau writes of the "brutal rawness and unrelenting unfriendliness of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, drawing our attention to author Graham Green's observation that "love and responsibility are indistinguishable." The poem, Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden, causes Morneau to repent of having spoken to his father with a marked absence of gratitude. Hayden writes, in part, "Sundays too my father got up early/ and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold, / then with cracked hands that ached / from labor in the weekday weather made / banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him." The question asks how we have responded to the sacrifices made by our elders, and the prayer begs Jesus to forgive our ingratitude and heal our self-righteousness and insensitivity.

This facsimile is wonderful, though there are no other facsimiles of Cotton Nero A.x to compare it to.

For anyone interested in either the marvellous dialect or the skill of this anonymous northern master, this facsimile will not disappoint.

The introduction by Prof. Gollanz is likewise useful, though not so much as an artifact as much as for Prof. Gollanz's insights into both the period and the content of the manuscript.

In book 16 of this Space Opera, we're in the middle of a short quartet of adventures on Venus.

Thora, beautiful Arkonide military commander, is still in the hands of the rebels against Perry Rhodan's New Power government. Perry takes a spaceship and attempt to rescue her, only to realize that the ship he has flown has no radio code for the secret Venusian base. Accordingly, the super computer turns on all Venusian defenses, effectively sealing the planet against any further landings. Perry and his small crew must fight on land - a land swarming with Venusian monsters and storms.

Thora's group is eventually captured by a second rebel group - a group that does not like the first rebel group, nor do they like the rule of the New Power. Perry allows Thora to remain in their camp - not only to teach her a lesson, but to allow her to cause confusion and strife among the rebels. The story concludes in #17 - "The Venus Trap".

I've never been this impressed by a series. I'm reminded of old cliffhangers like "Buck Rodgers" or "Flash Gordon" when reading these marvelous books. This series is still being published in Germany and is now well over 1,800 volumes. It's too bad American publishers stopped these after only about 120 books. I had to learn to speak, read, and write German in order to continue reading Perry Rhodan.

This book also contains another editorial, and another science fiction movie section. There is no fan letters page in this volume. But there are two stories - one continuing adventure, and one short story - beginning a series of science fiction shorts at the end of each volume of Rhodan stories. Although these stories have nothing to do with Perry Rhodan, they are worth looking at. Well worth reading the entire series.
