Origami Foil Paper

Origami foil paper

First of all, this is not a book, it's a collection of 18 sheets of foil backed with white paper, for use in folding origami models. The foil is reasonably good quality and does not crack when you make a sharp fold as some do. The range of colours is quite good though as always in a multi pack like this there are some you may not want to use. The sheets are cut very accurately and the papers work well for folding complex models as the foil is very thin.

I regard the cost as being the one thing against this product, there is no need for all the extra packaging and the paper could easily have been sold in its cellophane wrapping only with just a tab at the top or a cardboard insert with the publisher information, and then it could have cost far less. However it's difficult to find good quality origami foil, this is similar in feel to Japan foil so seasoned folders will be pleased to have an easily available supply.

Useful guide on scattering for Polymer Scientists
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-07
Ryoung-Joon Roe presents a handy reference and introduction to x-ray and neutron scattering, where emphasis is placed on using a terminology that helps the reader learn about both the techniques simultaenously. Scattering has served as one of the most important characterization tools for polymer community. This book outlines the basic mathematics and experimental details required to understand the structure and properties as revealed by these scattering methods in: crystalline and amorphous polymers, polymer solutions and blends, polymer dynamics and block copolymers. While emphasis is placed on demonstrating how all scattering shares similar theories and philosophy, the choice of several examples and applications of either techniques is used to remark on aspects peculiar to either X-ray studies or Neutron Scattering.

Since most serious students of polymer science are familiar with light scattering, the book would appeal them as perfect guide to familiarize themselves with limits and use of neutron and X-ray scattering. A more detailed discussion on Polymers and Neutron Scattering is found in the classic text by Julia S. Higgins and Henry C. Beno^it, while for Light Scatttering texts by Pecora & Berne and by Wyn Brown are essential references. Compared to those classic references, Roe's text will appear as more accessible to people seeking introduction to scattering methods. By the same token, it contains only the essence, the flavor of aspects of polymer behavior, say crystallization, surface studies or dynamics, and one will need to delve into the other texts if he seeks exhaustive discussion.

On the Forefront of Mexican American Educational Equity
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-20
I must confess, I'm writing this with a somewhat overpowering dose of nostalgia. The book I'm reviewing was written by my dad some 37 years ago. Today would be Thomas P. Carter's 80th birthday, were he still alive.

"Mexican Americans in School: A History of Educational Neglect" is a testament to the power of social activism, and more specifically, to "scholar activism." My dad cared deeply about the plight of the Mexican American in schools across America, and used his skills as an educational sociologist to address the problem in this book, which is the first book of its scope to address the issue. "Groundbreaking" was the description given by his Mexican American colleagues at his memorial, who also said that he was a "pioneer in Mexican American education and social justice."

Written in 1970, when many Mexican American students were marginalized, discounted, and dumped into special education classes, this book examines this injustice, presenting the scope and specific details as well as the societal/institutional responsibilities.

Perhaps most importantly, Carter flatly disproves the common thinking about these students, and shows the institutional racism for what it was. He also suggests and discusses several solutions to the problem of educational inequity for the Mexican American student.

Chillingly, he recommends that schools need to "become for [Mexican American students] a relevant, exciting, pleasant, and truly significant experience." He then goes on to say that in order to achieve such an experience, educators must eliminate the conditions which work against it such as "rote teaching, rigid curriculums, biased teachers..."

The rigid curriculums and rote teaching associated with No Child Left Behind, along with the increasing tensions surrounding immigration issues and the continuing high dropout rate among Mexican American youths, indicate that the book is as relevant and important today as it was when it was written.

Too bad. But perhaps we have a way out, if we take Carter's challenge and institute his ideas for reform. As he writes, if "thoughtful people" continue to push for what is right informed by what is true, there might still be cause for optimism. I hope so. It's been 37 years since the book was written and Mexican American students are STILL struggling. Perhaps it would help if more thoughtful people read this book. Our society is clearly still in need of social, educational, and scholar activism.

best scale book EVER!

Review Date: 2007-08-22
This book offers a unique way to learn scales. Anyone can learn scales! I'm privileged to know the author and I know her method works. This book along with the major scales workbook helps students of all levels to learn their scales on the keyboard using pictures that stay in your mind when you play. This is NOT your ordinary scale book. Glenna was my 5th and last piano teacher and by her method I went from knowing none of my scales to memorizing all of my scales along with their counterparts. Learning scales is a very important part of learning to play the piano and through her method I was able to play better because I knew the background for any piece I'd play. An example in the major scale workbook is the C major scale. Think of a color crayon, how it's straight across. Crayon begins with C, and since a crayon is straight you remember when you're playing that the C scale has no sharps or flats -it's played straight across the white keys starting on any C. I love using these books. I teach now, and these are the only books I recommend when learning scales. It's absolutely the best investment!

A look into the Manchester scene
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-22
A book that details the life of a few of Moss Side's residents. The book details the history of Machester, England and it's development to one of the nortorius gang lands. The story is based very strongly on the Yardies in Manchester who deal drugs and offer protection to local residents and business men.

The shocking nature of some of the details is alarming accurate. this book is for those who wish to be entertained as well as educated.

The whole story has a twist and the story never becomes predictable.

Another master piece.

Everything you wanted to know about the SSPX
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-13
The title says it all. The book opens with a list of some guiding principles. After which, the first half of the book explains in detail, through question and answer format. Through this method the position of the Society of Saint Pius X is made clear. Especially when it comes to the subject of the Pope, the New Mass and the new (1983) Code of Canon Law.

The second half of the book presents a thorough, yet brief, history of the first twenty-five years of the Society of Saint Pius X. And numerous photos support this history.

Read this book and then make your own intelligent and educated decisions. A must read to understand about what the Society stands for.

The book I loved!!!!!

Review Date: 2005-09-06
I finished it the early hours. I couldn't stop reading it...at bed, metro, when walking. Brilliant, adventurous, vivid characters that will never forget. Subversive, keeps you in agony, didactic. A brilliant way of presenting the story, the story is narrated from mother's and son's standpoint. Each chapter instead of an ordinary title, has song titles by famous bands, composers, singers. One of the best books I've ever read!! I fully recommend it!
