Nature writing at its most thought-provoking bestReview Date: 2000-04-02
And: All day, a rain of life and death goes on. A catbird crashed against the pane and fell gasping. Then it gathered itself in a narrow canoe shape and lay there patiently waiting to recover or die. Awareness is a name of agony. I wish there was something to pray to for its life. But one must not get excited. One must not grieve. Nature, Mom, all-powerful, monstrous and monolithic Mother sits and chooses.
The whole book is wonderful! I wish I could read it again for the first time just for the pleasure of its discovery.

INSIDE THE CHRISTIAN BROTHERSReview Date: 2007-07-21
This fictionalised memoir (we presume it's autobiographical) brings us right back into Catholic Ireland of the 1960s. We can smell the incense, the lighted candles, the beewswax on the floors of the corridors. We can hear the bells for morning prayer, the Gregorian chant, the laughter and banter on the playing fields. We can hear the silence - as the young, dedicated novices prepare for the monastic life by undergoing eight day retreats with no conversation whatsoever, confining themselves to prayer and meditation.
Of course, not everybody who joined stayed the course - and this dilemma, to stay or go, to persevere or to abandon one's vocation, becomes the central theme of the book, and causes anxiety, scruples and terror in young Brendan (even the title of the book suggests imprisonment).
Yet it's not all doom and gloom. Far from it. The book has many humorous and poignant moments as Brendan and his peers stumble from one hilarious scrape to another. The author keeps the chapters short, with many of them ending on a knife-edge. Yes, it's a real page-turner.
Even if you know nothing of the Christian Brothers, you'll find this book a gripping read. The characters are true-to-life, and sometimes larger than life.
The author has avoided the temptation to make this either an exposé or a cover-up of the abuses which some of the Brothers have undoubtedly been guilty of over the years. He tells it like it was, and leaves judgement to the reader. What comes across between the lines, however, is that he considers the early recruitment, the systemic depersonalisation and the pressure to stay as the greatest abuse, a point which has never really been made - till now.
INSIDE is a must for those who would like to know what made the Brothers tick, what made them so successful in their heyday, and what made some of them, at least, dysfunctional.

No frills, just what you need, and lots of it.Review Date: 2008-04-22
I love the clear and "easy to understand" dialect of the speaker, which I have been told is Lebanese.
The course shifts from phrases and sentances in both langauges, building them to complete paragraphs spoken in Arabic only. The verb conjugations are many, but NEEDED to reinforce this oft overlooked skill! [Pimsleur and so many other so called "complete" $200+ courses leave much to be desired with regards to verb conjugations - ahem].
My late high school Latin teacher, God rest his soul, would approve of the amount of conjugational drills in this course.
Well done Topics Entertainment!
This course is truly a masterpiece, and for the money, it stands all alone in terms of value, and greatly exceeds the more expensive courses in vitually all imaginable metrics. Buy it. Salam.

Amazing "blog-like" book from the medical pastReview Date: 2008-04-17
In later years it has been revealed that the "Anonymous" book was written by Dr. Alan Edward Nourse, who left medicine after a short career to become a writer of science-fiction and non-fiction medical books. He is the author of the Ladies Home Journal Medical Guide, "The Body" (Time/Life Series) and for years was also "The Family Doctor" for a monthly Good Housekeeping column

Intern by Doctor XReview Date: 2008-01-23
years ago. A few weeks ago I re-read Intern. With only a few minor
changes, this book describes what can happen today!
Today's practice of medicine has so many wonderful new tools; but,
the tools are only as good as the craftsmen wielding them.
Reading this book, I thought it might have been written by a young Robin Cooke or Michael Crichton. In Crichton's book, 'Travels', Crichton
describes some of the secret horrors in the practice of medicine that
caused him to quit the practice of medicine after he got his degree
from Harvard.
I think that Crichton might have had a better experience if he'd taken
training at what is now Hebert School of Military Medicine; but, Hebert
did not open til 1972. I think Crichton would have made a great internist.

Excellent for novice and expert alike.Review Date: 2003-07-20
Even so, I learned a lot from a few minutes with this book. The advice on ordering photo books is alone worth the cost of the book. I can't judge how readable it is for a novice, but it's very clearly written and the pictures are excellent. I think it would work well for a novice too.
The author uses photos of his son Tristan throughout the book. Hopefully by the time Tristan is a teenager he will not have access to this book.
Really, a super book. There's no Apple provided iPhoto manual and the online help file is somewhat feeble. Buy this book.

There is very limited discussion of team play, team drills, ect. so this is not a good source for general theory. But as a teaching tool to help individual players learn to improve their technique this book is second to none. Having played for 20 years and coached 12 more at a Division I level I still learned a few things from this book. If I ever go back to coaching I'm going to give a copy to each of my players.
