This is at least the fourth iteration of this work, edited by the grand master of Canadian Literature, Gary Geddes.
No-one else could have produced such a thorough and informed work dealing with contemp. CDN poetry. One can get lost for days, following various poets as they created a true national poetic literature in the face of the onslaught of toxic American cultural imperialism. An exhaustive and through compilation, tho wonders why he forgot to include Douglas Isaac.

3X3 Eyes: Blood Of The Sacred Demon is the fourth and latest graphic novel of the popular manga (Japanese comic) series by Yuzo Takada, about an immortal three-eyed demon girl who yearns to become human and the cursed, indestructible young man with whom she shares her soul. Pai has had her memory and her third eye sealed away, and she is leading a normal life blissfully unaware of who and what she really is. Yet Yakumo is determined to reawaken her, if only because the evil forces that seek to subvert her power can never be beaten back while she remains unaware. Fans of the animated version will notice significant variations in the original source comic, including a different twist ending to the pair's battle with a ruthless marionette! Highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy action-adventure, as are the previous three volumes: House Of Demons, Curse Of The Gesu, and Flight Of The Demon.

My 9-year old daughter actually asked for these, because she enjoyed them so much in math class at school. I was excited to find them so easily through Amazon and was glad to encourage her love of learning and creativity.

This is a refreshing change: a textbook that's readable, even entertaining at times. The author doesn't write in smarter-than-you "scholarese" & leave you to translate to plain English, but instead writes as if speaking to an intelligent person who doesn't happen to be familiar with the field. I like the bios of the major theorists, and the case studies used for illustration: after all, "people persons" like to hear about real people.

Oregon Frontier Story

Unusually deep character study for a so-called western - but then, this is Ernest Haycox in his prime.

Mark Sheridan travels to Oregon and pioneers in town building, stage runs, sawmills and politics. The politics are rough and tumble, and so is the romance for that matter. An everyman-kind-of-hero who is likeable and interesting. His love-interest is complex, strong and unpredictable (thankfully). Exciting story, well written.

X marks the spot once again

After loving "Bilal's Bread," the first novel from Sulayman X, I was eager to read this one--and I was not disappointed. This is the story of young Isa, who as the offspring of an American GI and his Thai mother, is known as a "bird-shit foreigner." The story gives a quick overview of his sad upbringing as a half-breed, and launches into his life on a banana plantation, living with his stern grandparents. After watching the workmen, one of them figures out his nature and rapes him. Then several of the men have him.

In physical and emotion pain, he runs away to Shanghai and makes a living the first way he finds how--by working as a young boy male prostitute and living in a public park. When he hits bottom, strung out on heroin, he is discovered by a kindly Muslim family. The healing process begins, but slowly, and haphazardly, as he falls in love with a son in the family who is his same age.

He has always wanted to find his mother, and some other unspoken wishes and dreams come to fruition here. So many fine points are deeply thought out. For instance, the name "Isa," which seems Muslim to the family who takes him in, was really from his careless prostitute mother, who saw a battered sign in the hospital as she was going into labor: "...isa and Mastercard Accepted."

Though there were a few points of self-reflection that came across to me as "tell instead of show" (when the rule is "show instead of tell") the story is so rich, the plot so captivating and Isa's character so well-drawn that I can't give this book less than the top rating. Sulayman X is truly breaking new ground in writing about gay life.

Honest to God, laugh out loud funny

I am an avid reader of many genres, and when it comes to humor or satire I will occasionally find myself grinning at the text, but French's efforts had me laughing out loud a number of times. A great satirical overview of the restaurant industry, combined with the bite of an expose amid the unfolding of an autobiography. Perhaps too "colorful" for prudes, it is satire at its finest. At least on par, if not better than, Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential", which is written from the back-of-the-house perspective. Well done!
