The only good book about all the X-planesReview Date: 2001-02-02
Also check out Miller's Aerofax Minigraphs (mostly also out of print) about the X-15, the X-1, etc. They contain more specific information about each plane. For instance, the X-15 Minigraph contains information about *every* flight the X-15 ever did, captive and launched flights.

Excellent single volume reference for Xt / Motif developers.Review Date: 1998-04-09
The chapters on debugging and error handling alone were worth ten times the price of this book, and have significantly added to the robustness of our applications. We used this book in 1995 to support a Linux hosted Motif implementation - our first under X - and found this by far the most useful volume.
The detailed descriptions of the Motif widgets take a little navigating to start with, but are compact and useful descriptions of complex objects.
This book does not cover the new features of X11R6.3 (printing and other extensions) which were released after the book was published, but I look forward to a new edition that includes them.
While Kimball's book is not always an easy read, this is dictated by the complex subject matter, which he tackles with competence and completeness. Highly recommended.

StunningReview Date: 2002-12-15
The drawings are enough to make me weep at their sheer beauty. When I bought this, I opened it up while walking along the street in the city, and actually stopped to stare at the first page for ages, trying to drink the entire (gory) image in. If you are into manga solely for the art, then X/1999 is for you.
The plot is really starting to pick up at this point. Slight warning- most of what I say from now on will contain spoilers.
This manga begins with the intensly gory image of Kamui's aunt 'giving birth' to one of the sacred swords. This image has a severe psychological affect on the character Kotori, and a lot of this volume is devoted to her memories of her mother. I don't even like Kotori that much, and I found myself fascinated by her dreamscapes. By watching these, you will see how truly inventive the writers are.
There's also some lovely foreshadowing for Fuma. I really do feel for his character, thanks mostly to the astounding drawings. We also get to see more of the sinister BEAST, which provides the cliff-hanger conclusion to this volume.
I've been a fan of the X/1999 series since I saw a handful of episodes at an anime screening, and the manga just really takes the cake- and if manga had mouths, well it would eat the cake as well. The only problem- I've been unable to find Volume Eight anywhere! If you're going to start buying this series, then I suggest that you prepare to give up quite a bit of money- once you start, you won't be able to stop.

An X-MEN fans answer to How it all began?Review Date: 1999-06-16
The Xavier FilesReview Date: 1997-11-18
As a huge fan of the X-Men, I have read many novelizations and many comics. But the X-Men themselves remain mostly a mystery. Where do they come from? Why did Xavier choose them? What did they do in their pasts that made them such prime candidates for a team in which trust is everything? All the questions are answered here.
It gives you a real insider's view of the X-Men. You journy to the heart of Cerebro, the X-Men's super advanced computer used mainly for the detection of powerful mutants, and see for yourself how it used to be. Each X-Man entered a tale of thier past, something really big that changed their lives. For Jubilee, it was the death of her parents, and then her foster parents, within a year. For Rogue, it was discovering that she wasn't as invincible as she thought. For Xavier himself, (the X-Men's mentor, teacher, and all around best friend) it was his step-brother, Cain Marko, aka the Unstoppable Juggernaut. This is a must-have for any X-Men fan. To find more answers to the questions you've had for years, order your copy today!

Layin' it on the thin blue lineReview Date: 2007-05-13
But almost every page has something interesting, either a tidbit about how cops react to different situations or thoughts about rehabilitation, retirement, raising children. Most anything is grist to a cop's mill, because, as X says, it's about dealing with people.
In theory, we are not supposed to know where Officer X works, but it is not hard to figure out from clues in the book that he is, or was, on the force of Glencoe, Ill., a small, almost lily-white and rich village of fewer than 10,000 people among the northern suburbs of Chicago.
Now, I'm not a cop, but I have worked around them for a long time as a newspaper reporter, and what Officer X has to say has the ring of real cops. He says some of what he writes may offend some people, and that's for sure.
To take an example, Officer X's particular passion is getting drunk drivers off the road, and he notes that Hispanics are way overrepresented in DUIs in his town. He explicitly denies having or offering any reason that should be so. Well, we track DUIs in my county, too, and Hispanics are way overrepresented here, too.
Everybody knows it, but nobody is supposed to notice it,
X is also frank about what cops I used to be around called `failing the attitude test.' In other words, beating up arrestees.
Of modern law enforcement, Officer X says, "the fear of video cameras these days keeps a lot of scumbags from getting tune-ups they richly deserve." That's frank.
There's plenty here to start a conversation with, presented in a graceful style that is definitely not usual for cops.
One thought deserves special mention: "Watch out for terrorism. Being geographically isolated has helped us to a point. But a continuing high profile has brought us all kinds of attention we don`t need. Americans have simply been too lucky for too long. Perhaps some of that evaporating defense money should be earmarked for anti-terrorism. The local cops aren't equipped to handle or prevent that stuff."
That was written in 1994. Officer X was a smart guy.
