What makes X tick

This is a great book. I am using the knowledge gleaned from this book to manage windows for a product platform using Java to talk directly to the XServer via the protocol. I knew almost nothing about X but had great deal of experience with other UI Toolkits. Within a few months I had a deeper and more satisfying understanding of X and its capabilities. Not for the faint of heart, but perfect for the inquisitive programmer...

Everything you always wanted to know about X...

This book reveals X at its most raw: the underlying bytestream that is truly X. If you've been confused by GUI toolkits and widgets galore, this book will strip away everything that isn't part of the core concepts that you need to know to understand what happens during an X session.

This book is not for the faint of heart, however. If you're wondering about learning how to write an X application, this book is probably not for you. This book is a good reference for implementors of X servers and X libraries; it may also be of some use to advanced X application programmers that need a reference for debugging purposes.

Looking for a wine guide that will actually help you in selecting wine at a restaurant, supermarket or wine store? So was I! This book reviews wine you can actually find and does so in a very entertaining and witty way! This book will stuff the stockings of every adult in my family this holiday season. Can't beat the price either!

Hits the spot!

Finally a book that is written with the average consumer in mind. I enjoy the colorful reviews that are straight forward and understandable. I take it with me every time I go to buy wine. The "Under $15" section is the best. I have found some really outstanding wines that don't cost an arm & a leg. I highly recommend this book for anyone that likes wine but doesn't like the pretense that is usually associated with it.

Jim Roth had done some recruiting work for a company I once worked for as VP International Life Operations. I had the pleasure of working with Jim on a search. He was thoroughly professional and clearly one of the best executive recruiters I have worked with in over thirty years in business. I started reading the X-Factor Resume, not expecting to learn much.

I was wrong. If you want to write a killer resume, buy this book. If you want to understand what hiring managers and recruiters look for in the billions of resumes that cross their desks, buy this book. I can honestly say this is the best resume writing book I have ever read. Buy, read, learn.

The X-Factor Resume Is a MUST READ for Anyone Conducting a Job Search

The X-Factor Resume: Reinventing the Resume for the 21st Century!

I have engaged in executive-level searches throughout my career and therefore felt I had a pretty good resume format. Now, I know what I've been missing. This book gave me valuable insight into how companys/recruiters screen resumes, what they look for, and most important, how to get your resume noticed and moved to the top of the list. The book is organized in a step-by-step fashion to instruct and guide the reader every step of the way. It is like having your own personal coach advising you through the process. This book is THE definitive guide to writing a "million dollar" resume.

Having started with "Madrox" and then moving on to volume 1 before reading this, I can easily say this is a great book. It's a little slower than the first one, but the payoff in this book is mind-blowing. Layla is still a part of the team doing her "I know stuff" thing, Quicksilver drops by for a scary guest stint, and there's an incredible moment of betrayal by one of the members of X-Factor you'll never see coming. Banshee's daughter deals with his death (from the pages of X-Men), and perhaps the coolest thing of all is how a simple plot thread from the very first issue of the series plays a huge part in the end of this book. Trust me, the story doesn't always move along at a fast pace, but there are enough shock-and-awe moments to keep you reading.

And through it all, Jamie continues to deal with the multiple personalities that are born whenever he's hit. The difference this time around is that he's slowly growing more in control and that's good. The plot device was a good place to start, but if it hadn't changed in a dozen issues the novelty of it would have worn thin.

This is not the book to start the series out on. Go back to the "Madrox" limited series, then get the first one before coming back here. Peter David is doing an incredible job of storytelling here, and you don't want to spoil anything by missing a key point early on.

Peter david does it again

I was excited to get this book and it completely lived up to my expectations. Like the other Krauss-Cordoza collaborations from Victory Belt publishing this is a very well put together book printed on high grade glossy paper, with detailed high quality multiple-angle shots of the techniques and very good explanation including the physical mechanics of the movement and advice on strategy of when to use it, how to get there, mistakes to avoid, and what your opponent is likely to do. Marcelo Garcia is probably the best grappler in the world and his system is unique and effective and works for all body types, and unlike Eddie Bravo's very good system doesn't require crazy flexibility. The book provides info on gi and no gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It's comparable to Eddie Bravo's Rubber guard book in terms of quality and production value. It has a color coded easy to use system that makes it very easy to quickly find sections and whether the technique is appropriate for gi and no gi competition.
The introduction includes a short biography that shows you the determination and dedication that has made him the champion he is. From 3 hour commutes to training, to cleaning the mats so he could afford to train 4 times a day. The first section on technique is 78 pages dedicated to the butterfly guard including basic stance and grip work, sweeps and transitions, and submissions all with detailed advice on how to establish and properly adjust the technique so you can make it work in high level competition ( e.g. 7 pages just on the guillotine choke, most books give it only 2). He constantly emphasizes drilling the technique to really get it down and learning the fundamentals of the butterfly guard before moving to the X guard. This sort of guard requires very good timing and sense of balance that can only be developed through many hours on the mat. The X guard is detailed in the final 149 pages of the book (264 pages all together). 63 pages on establishing the X guard from standing, sitting, elbow control, underhooks, full guard, half guard, omoplata, mount and headlocks. Then a section with 18 sweeps from X guard from different kids of control (e.g. from hands, sleeve, or collar). Then 15 pages detailing 7 submissions for X guard including omoplata, triangle, gi and no gi inverted arm bar, knee bar, foot lock, and heel hook. Again filled with tips on when to use it, positions to transitions from, your opponents likely reactions, and common mistakes. If you perfect even just a few of the techniques in this book your game will improve dramatically. This book is more for intermediate to advanced students of BJJ, though the section on butterfly guard is fairly accessible and very useful to beginners. Those starting out (and intermediates too) should check out Kid Peligro's book "the Essential Guard" or the Joe Moreira /Ed Beneville 3 part series on the Guard, these focus are more on the fundamentals. If you're looking to improve your guard and your overall game, I highly recommend this book, it's a steal at this price, I would have paid more for it. I look forward to his next book on arm drags and mastering the back.

"extended reading" for the lost soul

if you are like me, you read all three of the "essential x-men" books cover to cover. Sure, the third installment was a little weak, but i still enjoyed it. I was pretty sure that an essential x-men 4 was an impossibility due to marvels tight budget so i thought i was doomed at a fate of never reading an issue past issue #161. A month later, i saw "the brood saga" available at amazon.com. I knew that that title directly followed the essentiel x-men 3. But its sole review was a bad one, telling me it was a no-buy. So i didnt buy it. I then saw "x-men from the ashes", which recounted issues about #167 to #173. i ordered it only to find it not available. I then truly thought i was doomed until i found this book, which succesfully reprints 167- 173 in chapter book size. these are good stories that can fit in you pocket. Buy this.

Classic X-Stories in an affordable and attractive format

Give credit to Marvel Comics for their aggressive and wide-ranging program of re-printing classic comics: in formats for all ages and budgets, Marvel has released reissues of their groundbreaking comic books in hardcover (Marvel Masterworks), softcover (graphic novel reprints and the b/w "Essentials" collections), comic book format, and now the new "Backpack Marvels": digest-sized collection of 7-8 comic book classics. This book reprints Uncanny X-Men #167-173, featuring top X-Men scribe Chris Claremont's writing and artwork on the book by Paul Smith and a fill-in issue by the great Walt Simonson. Fans of the recent X-Men movie will find this collection easier to get into than the current comic book (most of the characters in this collection appear in the movie: Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue, and Storm).

This truly is classic, almost 'primal' X-Men: originally published in the years before there were ten or twelve X-books with complicated and conflicting storylines, month after month Claremont told some of the most entertaining and eloquent tales in the four-color medium. There's such a good range of stories in here: the X-Men's return from battling the Brood, the introduction of the Morlocks and Madeleine Pryor, Rogue's admission into the X-Men--much different than the movie version!--and best of all, a Wolverine/Rogue team-up story that's so well-written, so powerfully drawn (check out the amazing, Frank Miller-inspired silent fight sequence) that the ending leaves a tear in your eye and you hardly notice Wolverine is absent for the first half of this collection. Smith's artwork is clean and crisp and reproduces well in black and white at this slightly reduced size, and even with today's computerized lettering companies, for my money there's still no better letterer in the business than Tom Orzechowski.

Only one complaint: I would have liked to see a "story so far" introduction. The collection starts abruptly, dropping the X-Men into a conflict with the New Mutants after an adventure in outer space (the ramifications of which drastically affect Professor X). A summary of what had gone on before and a brief introduction to the characters would have been useful to the first-time reader.

That said, I'm hoping there *are* plenty of new readers for this book and this format: one of Marvel's challenges in the 21st century is to find a wider and new audience for comic books as a whole. This attractive package, affordable price, and classic collection of stories may be what the industry needs to sell comics outside the traditional comic book store market. I can easily see this attractive little volume being sold at newsstands, airport gift shops, bookstores, and more.

The only good book about all the X-planes
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-02
If you want to find detailed information about the X-planes, this is the book you want! Too bad it is out of print, but it is really worth searching for. For most of the X-planes, it is very detailed, with lots of pictures and a description of its purpose and the results it provided. For the more interesting early planes (X-1, X-2, X-15, etc.), it has lists of the flights and the pilots, and some detailed info about each flight. Even though I thought I had good knowledge of the X-planes, this book provided me with lots of additional information. I mean, how much do you know about the unmanned X-10 or the X-12?

Also check out Miller's Aerofax Minigraphs (mostly also out of print) about the X-15, the X-1, etc. They contain more specific information about each plane. For instance, the X-15 Minigraph contains information about *every* flight the X-15 ever did, captive and launched flights.

the very best source book on x-planes

this is the very best reference book on x-planes, written by Jay Miller who is unquestionably a top aerospace writer. Technical content makes this book a "must" for all aerospace students and engineers. Should be available in all aerospace design office bookshelves. Really, a desert island book !!!
