Malcolm X for Kids

This book is a good one. It is written by Walter Dean Myers who is an excellent children's writer. It covers basic facts about Malcolm X and truthfully provides his life history. What it doesn't cover and what probably would be difficult for kids in the intended age group is the controversy which is Malcolm X's philosophy and life. Malcolm X coined the term African-American because he felt that blacks in the US were Africans trapped in America. He believed in separatism and violent protest instead of Martin Luther King Jr.'s advocacy of non-violence. Myers states this but doesn't qualify the beliefs with opinion. Kind of tough for kids to hear without evaluation. I'm not sure how else it could have been done but Malcolm X is a controversial character.

This book really captures the heart, the mind, and the troubles of Malcolm X and society in the 1960's. The beautiful illustrations are wonderful at expressing complex emotions and complement the words of Walter Dean Myers extemely well. This book is fabulous as children seek to understand the complexities of those turbulent times.

This biography not only covers the crucial events of Malcolm X's life, but it also provides a historical context for them. The author really tries to give you a sense of what was happening in the U.S. socially and politically from Malcolm's birth to his death. Through his excelling writing, you get a real understanding of what was going on at the time. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Malcolm X, the Civil Rights Movement, or American History.

I don't think you have to be extraordinarily "yankee doodle dandy" to enjoy these shows. I am a fan of radio shows and I think this is one of the best dramatic series. I am also a Herbert Marshall fan. The stories are intelligent and plausible. The plots are surprisingly similar to actual events occurring today. Unlike the reviewer before me I did not detect any "McCarthy-ism" in the text.

As someone who grew up with a love for America instilled in me, I have found this collection to be most wonderful. It is serious in nature with subtle humor that is blended wonderfully.

Anti-communism sentiment is readily apparent and the occasional philosophical statements by the star, Ken Thurston, are welcome breaths of fresh air. Any American with patriotism in their blood will love this collection of 6, 90 minute tapes.

This book presents the differences between arguably the two most famous civil rights activists of the fifties and sixties, as well as showing the convergence between their ideas and ideals toward the end of thier respective lives. It is readable, succinct and thorough. I highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who will be teaching this period in history to middle or high school students.

There are a few surprises in this book for X-men fans. The plot is well written without saturating the story with too many characters (for the sake of having them). Just when the story gets really interesting, the book ends. I'm just disappointed there is isn't a volume two.

Another Good Mangaverse Title!

X-men Ronin is the mangaverse spin-off of the x-men. We start off after the whole Magneto fiasco in the first Mangaverse book. This story is mainly about the gathering of the mutants, but the high point is the fight of the X-men against The White Queen. This book is not as good as the Spider-man Mangaverse, but still worth getting.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby finish their original X-Men run
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-04
It is really interesting to see how much the X-Men have changed over the years. True, the Avengers quickly replaced all of their major members, but nobody ever really leaves the Avengers (except the Hulk), so Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America make it back for the parties and such. But Angel, Beast and Iceman really have been long gone, and the Uncanny X-Men gave way to the All-New All-Different X-Men with Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus and the rest giving the group of merry mutants an international flare. This second volume in the Marvel Masterworks series devoted to the X-Men collects issues 11-21. This means the end of Stan Lee's run as the writer of the comic book, with Roy Thomas taking over in issue #22. Jack Kirby does the layouts and/or pencils through issue #17 at which point Werner Roth moved from pencils Kirby's layouts to doing is own pencils. It was Roth who was the artist when I first started reading "The X-Men," so to me he is sort of the "original" artist for the book.

There are a trio of classic multi-part stories in this collection. The first is the two-part story #12-13, "The Origin of Professor X!" and "Where Walks the Juggernaut!" After Magneto (#10), the Juggernaut was probably the second most important supervillain in the X-Man mythology, although compared to the master of magnetism everybody is a poor second. We also have the first appearance of the Sentinels in a trilogy (#14-16), characters that would end up in some of the best X-Men stories of all time, and another encounter with Magneto (#17-18). Then you can throw into the mix the Mimic (#19), who combines all of the powers of the original X-Men (think the Super Skrull), and the flashback story of how Professor X lost his legs (#20).

Actually, I was surprised how many good stories ended up in this collection. I would have said there was a big mix of hits and misses until Jim Steranko and Neal Adams showed up to draw "The X-Men," but you cannot dismiss the major characters who are introduced during this period. The sophomore year for the students at Charles Xavier's school was pretty good. Lee left this book on the upswing.

Good supplement to the marvel universe rpg. It adds a fair number of new powers as well as some good villains and heroes from the marvel x-teams. The mini-adventure in the back is top notch and will help inexperienced game masters and players ease into the gaming system. Not a must have, but definitely a nice addition for the marvel gamer.

Mr. Gaspar's poetry puts you into his his memories as if they were your own. From listening to his grandfather and uncle tell OLD STORIES around the kitchen table to recieving the EUCHARIST at Sunday mass his memories of life in a small Cape Cod town are real. Although he left the town at a young age, his poetry is deeply rooted there and conveys to the reader the longing that he has to return to that time and place

I carry this book with me, pull it out of my backpack at the slightest opportunity and wave its little red heart like a tract, like a knife. Gaspar's poems are my lifeline. I've read almost everything I can get my hands on about my hometown of Provincetown and Gaspar is the only writer since 1890 to accurately reflect the life of a *native* of my town.

Like Gaspar, I too had to leave the town of my Azorean ancestors to make a life for myself. I too am haunted. His lines come back to me daily. From a poem about these ancestors: "And this old country is any place we have to leave/The voices of the dead follow me across a continent now/They still want to speak with my voice." From a poem about his mother, limited lives and the lost industry of ice-cutting: she stands as a young girl on the frozen pond with "the look of all the rest of her life in her eyes."

I asked for this book, and his previous book of poems, "The Holyoke" (with an exquisite introduction by Mary Oliver) in the Provincetown Bookshop, something of a local institution. After I'd spelled out Gaspar's name to the clerk and repeated the title twice, she said, condescendingly, "Are you sure you really want it? Why don't you go to the library and make sure before I try to special-order it for you?" For the bookstores in town not to carry this book, not to fill their windows with Frank Gaspar's work, for the streets there not to ring with the sound of his poems being read aloud--is a slap in the face, a knife in the gut to the native population.

I thank God for Frank Gaspar.
