This is a fascinating and colorful fictional memoir of a young girl growing up in South Florida in the 1950's. The writing is superb. Each character will remain with you for a long time. If you liked The Glass Castle, The Secret Life of Bees, Zippy, Ellen Foster, etc. etc., you'll LOVE Guava Dreams.

This is a book I couldn't leave. Kelly's unique voice and wit carried me on a mesmerizing journey through the gritty, mango-sticky, sweaty summers of childhood, through the fears and confusions, and the soaring exaltations. It is a sharply real taste of growing up, in a world totally unique, a world that is lost to us now.

Our whole family loved this book and it's sequel Hamish X and Hollow Mountain. Both books are hilarious and my husband and I loved the books I think even more than the kids. If you wish to discover first if Sean Cullen's brand of humour is your type of thing then I suggest doing a UTube search for him and his Food of Your Choice bits. If you laugh buy these books!

Here is a worthwhile buy, to see how the ancient fathers of the Church interpreted the book of Hebrews. This is made for both those well read and for the regular lay person. It's set up for both reading as well as for use as a commentary. Highly recommended.

Distinctive in form, content and style, the epistle to the Hebrews offers a profound high Christology and makes an awe-inspiring contribution to the understanding of Jesus as High Priest. The earliest extant commentary on the letter comes in thirty-four homilies from John Chrysostom. These homilies serve to anchor the excerpts chosen by the editors of this volume because of their unique place in the history of interpretation. In addition to being the first comprehensive commentary on the letter, they deeply influenced subsequent interpretation in both the East and the West, and their rhetorical eloquence has long been acknowledged. As in other Ancient Christian Commentary volumes, the excerpts chosen range widely over geography and time from Justin Martyr and Clement of Rome in the late first and early second century to The Venerable Bede, Isaac of Nineveh, Photius and John of Damascus in the eighth and ninth centuries. The Alexandrian tradition is well represented in Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Athanasius, Didymus and Cyril of Alexandria, while the Antiochene tradition is represented in Ephrem the Syrian, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Severian of Gabala and Theodoret of Cyr. Italy and North Africa in the West are represented by Ambrose, Cassiodorus and Augustine, while Constantinople, Asia Minor and Jerusalem in the East are represented by the Great Cappadocians-Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa-Eusebius, Cyril of Jerusalem and Jerome.

Pushing the limits in x-ray diffraction

The book provides an excellent introduction in high resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD) of thin films and multilayers. It covers the necessary x-ray equipment to perform HRXRD (x -ray sources, optical elements, difractometers) as well as the diffraction theory. The use of HRXRD is also demonstrated by lots of examples, most of them up to date research experiments. The book is well written and gives the advanced student an insight in a modern field of solid state physics and the experimentalist lots of useful hints on performing measurements.

Good like a buyer what you need to know is the content of this book: This book has 32 pages of how to draw in way simple "basic" two poses of Wolverine, one of cyclops, one of storm, one of Professor Xavier, one of beast with other three without explained ,one of Gambit, one of Rogue, one of Magneto, two of Sentinels, one of sabretooth, one of Mr Sinister and one of Blackbird all together with theirs principals features step to step until ends them exactly how the of animated serie and it also has 8 pages of grid paper. It is a beautifull book in presentation and quality and my other opinion about this book,is for someone that need to start the practice of the heroe human figure and who practice the human figure, is an ideal complement.

This is a very good book for people who want to know how to draw the characters from the X-Men comic. It has many of the X-Men in it and has some of the villains, too. This book will probably work better if you have some knowledge of how to draw. It includes Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Magneto, Proffesor X and about seven others. I definitely recommend it!

This book is highly interesting, informative, organized and educational. The title says the book is a guide for parents, however, I found the book to be most rewarding as a Health Education major. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends should even get their hands on this book... you never know what questions may pop up about sex and relationships! The book's goal is to break the uneasiness, and sometimes embarassing or awkward moments of educating your children about life's issues. It was extremely easy to understand and very real to life. The authors themselves have their own family so they talk from their hearts as "real" parents. They cover everything from initiating converstion to sexual development and sexual orientation. The Mirons took great concern considering the different lifestyles, beliefs, and morals of each individual circumstance and family. The book has two sections called, "Try This" & "Just the Facts." They provide alternative ideas to aid in the education process and important statistics parents may not know. The book has very few faults and has better prepared me for when I start to teach. It has greatly boosted my confidence level and I am sure to hold onto the book both as a reference and as guidance. Take a look for yourself, I promise you that it will not be a waste of time!

A Terrific Resource for Parents!

Whenever the topic of talking about sex and sexuality with our children comes up, I share this title. The book is written for parents (or other adults). Of course it covers sex, but it does also talk about love and relationships and their connection to sex.

Four aspects of this book that are invaluable are:

* It's written to help each adult examine his/her own attitudes about each topic, and to understand those of their partner as well.

*It provides great language for explaining and discussing different aspects of intimacy, sexuality, love, and the like.

*It provides great communication advice that goes well beyond the topic at hand.

*The authors have provided poll data to help parents understand what aspects of sexual knowledge and attitudes have changed with this generation, research findings about STDs, pregnancy, abstinence education--you name it. They don't advocate a particular point of view but they arm the reader with information so that the reader is able to see past his/her own experiences as teens learning about sexuality, sex, and love.

Anyone with a child over age 8 should have this book and start reading it, because you're gonna need it much sooner than you think...

All in the family --

Barbara Paul is both a wonderful and wonderfully-inventive writer. My own particular favorites of her large list of books are the ones featuring the operatic soprano/part-time detective Emmy Destin, with a little help from Enrico Caruso and other such notable luminaries of the time.

The books in which she incorporates her theatre background would stand out for that reason alone, (to me, at least) even if they didn't possess all the other star qualities necessary to produce a first-rate, entertaining book.

This quirky book is no exception, with former stage director Gillian Clifford, now a theatre-museum director, as the main protagonist. In her younger days, she had been married, all-too-briefly, to Stuart Decker, younger brother of the renowned venture capitalist Raymond. Stuart was the victim of a hit-and-run driver. The male Deckers, along with twin sisters, Michelle and Annette, comprise the current generation of a Boston family, which will immediately bring to mind other noted New England families, in more than one respect.

Raymond and his wife Connie, had one son, Theo; Annette, married to Tom Henry, a son, Ike; Michelle, married to Rob Kurland, Raymond's partner, had two sons, Bobby and Joel. Uncle Oscar and Aunt Elinor Ferguson had a daughter, Lynn. Theo had been the first to die, some years earlier, during a botched kidnapping attempt. But now, just in the last three months, Ike, Bobby and Lynn had all died, too, in apparent accidents. The final death was Raymond himself, in a fire at his home on Martha's Vineyard. "Whom the gods smile upon . . ."

While reading her Chicago newspaper, Gillian stumbles over the death notice for Raymond, and is compelled to travel to Boston, to re-visit the family of which she was once a member. The family, however, thinks differently. Once a Decker, always a Decker. In many more ways than one, it would appear.

Connie thinks Raymond was murdered, and in a short time, convinces Gillian to agree with her. From then on, it's no holds barred, as Gillian allies herself first with one, then another of the Deckers to get to the bottom of this murderous marry-go-round. Delicious!

I purchased Infostructor about a year ago. I was modeling data since 1982 and went into management a few years ago and decided to "get acquainted" with data modeling again.

I found most of the books I purchased to be less than helpful, boring, and redundant. So, when I purchased this product I kept everything so I could return it if I didn't like it.

Well, I kept it. I kept it because it's exciting, informative, practical, and effective. I learned more from this software in a few days than in months of reading modeling books.

I keep it with me on my notebook and reference it constantly. I do this because I sometimes get a little excited and model an area poorly. I then check what I did against what is suggested in Infostructor and I'm on the right course again.

I don't know if the author(s) of Infostructor will read this, but a hardy "WELL DONE"!!! Please let me know if you create other gems.

IR; The hidden resistance in a diversity of diseases
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 34 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-13
It was in 1986 at the end of his Banting Memorial lecture that Reaven said: "At first blush it appears outlandish to suggest an association between hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperinsulinemia.." His words have rung in my ears ever since! Yes hyperinsulinemia is now widely understood to be the measurable outcome of insulin resistance, now known by the international acronym "IR". Insulin resistance is the "hidden resistance" that leads to an incredible diversity of clinical disorders which "at first blush" appear even more unlikely; these disorders in fact range from diabetes to polycystic ovary disease; and from hypertension to unwanted facial hair in women to name just four conditions! It is highly appropriate that Reaven has now given the world the benefit of his understanding of this ubiquitous Metabolic Syndrome. This syndrome has baffled science for decades and has lead to an incredidible explosion of research papers on this theme; it is almost impossible to even read and understand all the abstracts for "insulin resistance" on Medline let alone read the published papers! Reaven's book is a welcome addition to our resources.
