I remember reading this book when I was a kid (I got it from a book club) and laughing out loud hysterically. I still remember it as one of the best books I read as a child, and something made me think of it and look it up more than 30 years later. I think I may buy it again for another go-round!

I loved this book when I was twelve (the same age as Andrew). It is chock full of verisimilitude and I loved the style, which is conversational without being hackneyed.

When in my twenties, I read Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye." A few pages into it, I said "HEY!" Holden Caulfield's voice is almost exactly the same as Andrew Kellogg's. Barbara Brooks Wallace cannot convince me she was not inspired by Salinger.

This book is truly a "Big Deal"

Barbra Brooks Wallace has written a book for youth that brings home what it is like to grow up unappreciated and lonely in a new community. Andrew, the book's hero, moves with his family to Washington DC and immediately begins facing all of the troubles a boy in junior high must face: the fears that go along with being the "new kid," bullies, loneliness, a big brother with no time for him unless he is bossing him around, and a kid sister he finds himself having to take care of. Top it off with a mother who has to go away for a while, and it is a wonder Andrew doesn't go crazy! Blessed with smarts and a wry sense of humor, however, Andrew rises to the challenges (even when he doesn't want to) and truly becomes the "big deal."

Great early teen reading!

This book brings back memories of my childhood. It's a story of a boy who moved with his family to Washington D.C. and tells about his struggles with childhood, and getting no respect. It is a very funny book for kids, and was the first book I remember laughing out loud while reading!

By far the best book to learn assembly bar none!
Before reading this book I thought the Jeff Duntemann assembly book was pretty good but this book makes it look bad!
First half of book has you working in debug which comes with every version of windows and easier to get going than masm.
2nd half covers masm but code still works with latest version of microsoft assembler 8.0 which I'm currently using!

Great book/ Great authors/ A must-read

Norton and Socha's authority makes this book a must to every "beginner" assembly programmer. This book presents basic items such as binary numbers, registers & basic arithmetic inside the 8086 family processors into part 1. The contents of the book becomes closely related with DSKPATCH - a real program written in assembly - so the reader has a UNIQUE opportunity to see how real programmers (and here Norton is a PC guru) use step-wise refinements techniques and modular projects in a real world. The 2nd edition is based in MASM 5/5.1, Borland TASM and OPTASM features. Maybe we must wait for MASM 6.1 update... then it'll become a rating 10...

This book has the great advantage of presenting such a difficult subject just like a personal teacher would do. It's written in a clear way and explains some important concepts about the 8086 processor. My advice is:if you want to learn assembler here's a good book to start with (even if it seems a little dated!)

Solutions to problems for bash users of all skill levels

Review Date: 2007-06-25
This book covers the GNU Bourne Again Shell, which is a member of the Bourne family of shells that includes the original Bourne shell sh, the Korn shell ksh, and the Public Domain Korn Shell pdksh. This book is for anyone who uses a Unix or Linux system, as well as system administrators who may use several systems on any given day. Thus, there are solutions and useful sections for all levels of users including newcomers. This book is full of recipes for creating scripts and interacting with the shell that will allow you to greatly increase your productivity.

Chapter 1, "Beginning bash" covers what a shell is, why you should care about it, and then the basics of bash including how you get it on your system. The next five chapters are on the basics that you would need when working with any shell - standard I/O, command execution, shell variables, and shell logic and arithmetic. Next there are two chapters on "Intermediate Shell Tools". These chapters' recipes use some utilities that are not part of the shell, but which are so useful that it is hard to imagine using the shell without them, such as "sort" and "grep", for example. Chapter nine features recipes that allow you to find files by case, date, type, size, etc. Chapter 10, "Additional Features for Scripting" has much to do with code reuse, which is something you find even in scripting. Chapter 11, "Working with Dates and Times", seems like it would be very simple, but it's not. This chapter helps you get through the complexities of dealing with different formats for displaying the time and date and converting between various date formats.

Chapter 12, "End-User Tasks As Shell Scripts", shows you a few larger though not large examples of scripts. They are meant to give you useful, real world examples of actual uses of shell scripts beyond just system administration tasks. Chapter 13, "Parsing and Similar Tasks", is about tasks that will be familiar to programmers. It's not necessarily full of more advanced scripts than the other recipes in the book, but if you are not a programmer, these tasks might seem obscure or irrelevant to your use of bash. Topics covered include parsing HTML, setting up a database with MySQL, and both trimming and compressing whitespace. Chapter 14 is on dealing with the security of your shell scripts. Chapters 15 through 19 finish up the book starting with a chapter on advanced scripting that focuses on script portability. Chapter 16 is related to the previous chapter on portability and is concerned with configuring and customizing your bash environment. Chapter 17 is about miscellaneous items that didn't fit well into any other chapter. The subjects include capturing file metadata for recovery, sharing and logging sessions, and unzipping many ZIP files at once. Chapter 18 deals with shortcuts aimed at the limiting factor of many uses of bash - the typing speed of the user and shortcuts that cut down on the amount of typing necessary. The final chapter in the book, "Tips and Traps", deals with the common mistakes that bash users make.

All in all this is a very handy reference for a vast number of the tasks that you'll come across when scripting with the bash shell along with well-commented code. Highly recommended.

Keep it close, you will use it

These O'Reilly Cookbooks should be on every sysadmin's shelf. The Bash Cookbook is no different. Incredibly useful book. I didn't read it cover to cover but have gone back to it at least 15-20 times to pull out nuggets of info. The real-world, practical examples and solutions offered in this book provide the sysadmin with a virtual swiss army knife when working with bash.

Book was so useful, I bought two extra copies and sent them to coworkers.

Linux system admin is something I do as part of my job. I've been able to acquire the basics and get the job done, but I knew that there were better ways to get the job done. Nothing like having an expert to help learn the ins and outs.

This book allowed me to take it to the next level. There are many excellent examples on how to get it done, as well as advice on things that should not be done.

There is a good mix of newbie info as well as useful tips for the seasoned veteran. There's usually more than one way to get the job done, and this book showed me some new, better ways to accomplish the task at hand.

If you're working with bash, you'll find something useful in this book.

A manual for how to successfully manage everyone, not just Gen X'ers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-03
While this book is purported to be a manual in how to manage young people, the advice can be applied to the management of all employees. If you are a manager, you must:

*) Not expect people to work extended overtime with little or no compensation.
*) Praise employees for work well done.
*) Not expect people to work at jobs that lack an inherent meaning.
*) Set an example by your actions and words, not just your words.
*) Allow people to have a life outside their job, not expect their job to be their life.

If you do these things, which should be part of the standard managerial playbook, then your employees will be more productive, happier and you will retain them. If you don't, you will become one of those managers who blame everything besides incompetent management style for the fundamental problems of their company.

Claire Raines describes the wants and needs of both generations; giving pratical advice to 'Boomer' managers on managing the 'X' generation. As an X generation reader, Raines' gives incite to why some'Baby Boomer'Managers are "All work, no play" and what frustrates them about Generation X employees today. Excellant source of information for both generations!

Beyond Generation X is an insightful look at how Baby Boomers and Gen Xers can peacefully coexist in the workplace. I recommend it especially for Boomers who have trouble understanding their Gen X workers (and vice-versa). Claire Raines (a Boomer herself) has some great ideas and presents them in an easy-to-follow manner. One thing to remember about this book is that it's not attempting to classify individuals. It's just helping us understand generations. It's also a quick read. I read it in an evening.

Whether we like it or not a great generation gap exists between the boomers and the gen xer's. This book helped me to understand what I, as a boomer, represented to the younger generation. These younger folks are not lazy, they just need a different motivational program. This book is a must read for those interested in surviving problems associated with the current labor shortage.

Of all the books about the actors and actresses on the show, this is the most comprehensive and accurate one I have read. It is informative and fun to read. If you want to learn about the guest stars that are normally left out of the other books, then this is the book for you.

A great book for curious X-Files fans!

Review Date: 1999-08-05
In this well written and researched volume by Mangels, we have what is essentially Guest Stars of The X-Files. In detailed episode guides, actors credits, personality profiles and exclusive interviews we learn more about the guest star faces that grace each and every episode of the show. Information here is current up to fourth season's "Gethsemane." It's surprising to see Jerry Hardin's acting credits take up a long five and a half pages! The book is profusely illustrated with the actor's b/w talent agency photographs. The highlight of this volume are the "Witness Interviews" with selected artists who passed through the show. Often, the features are with individuals who have not yet been exposed to the X-Files spotlight. Like Star Trek, X-Files has become a show in which we all want to know any new tidbit of information and this book sheds light on a "dark" corner of the X-Files mythos. Highly recommended!

Let me say that this is a great book. It is very well written. It provides a lot of excellent details -- It just doesn't have ANYTHING to do with the title! It should be titled "Beyond Duchovny and Anderson: The Supporting Actors of the X-Files." The book is chock full of interesting information about the supporting actors on The X-Files, but it has practically nothing on the characters they play. If you are truly looking for a book on the "mysterious characters" of the show, this is NOT the book for you. However, if you just want random facts about various actors who have appeared on the set of The X-Files, then you just might want to take a look at this book.

I loved this book! It was exciting and the ending suprised me. I have had the pleasure of meeting this author and she is just as interesting as her book, if not more so.

I am hoping she will write again. I would love to see a prequel to this novel. Paul is a very sexy and enticing character and he keeps you wondering what will he do next.

This book is very well written and definitely not an average ghost story. Makes you question how much of this was based on true accounts.

It is fiction--or is it? Read on....

You first need to read the section "about the author" before going further into the book. Then ask yourself, is this fiction or not?
A good story that could easily be made into a movie or short film. Each chapter pulls you to the next one. It flows from the real to the surreal without any hiccups. Makes you wonder how much is really fiction here.
A book worth reading and an ending that you may expect but then again.................

This book kept me invloved from the very start. You fall in love with the charecters, you become mesmorized with the story telling. This book will keep you interested with the ghosts, the characters, the mystery, and after several chapters you'll wonder if it is a love story, a ghost story, or a love story about ghosts. It is very intense, it's not a book for children as there are many scenes in this book that you'll want to try out with your lover. It has a surprise ending and you'll not want to put this book down until the very last page is read! One of the best "scary" books I have ever read!

I didn't know what to expect, as this was my first introduction to this author or any dutch author for that matter.

This book grabs you and won't let go until the very end. Even then it is reluctant. You immeadiately bond with the two qwirky detectives as they discover clues concerning a rare homicide in Amsterdam, and they discover themselves.

Outstanding, interesting, offbeat and just plain fun. Worth the time.

I ran into this author by accident, browsing in the mystery category, and I am delighted that I did. This is the second book I've read from the Amsterdam Cops series, and I plan to read them all! The characters are people you'd like to get to know -- believable and quirky. The plot of this particular book takes the reader inside the physical geography of Amsterdam as well as into the minds and world views of the detectives. A man who seems to have no connection to anyone else has been murdered in a run-down house along a city canal. The detectives weave in and out of the Dutch underworld to find the guilty parties. Absolutely delightful and mysterious

A solid Grijpstra and de Gier Mystery.

I really enjoy the way that Van De Wetering handles the police procedural from the Dutch POV. Like Freeling and Simenon, his characters tend to live more in the lives of the commonplace than exploring sensational serial murders.

In this novel, a virtual hermit is killed by a single shot-- very un-Dutch in a country where firearms are so controlled. It takes you through the underbelly of Amsterdam into houses of prostitution, the world of grey market electronics, and into the house of a flamboyant possible villain named Cat.

Not my favorite Grijpstra and de Gier (that honor still goes to _Death of a Hawker_) but still a great example of the series.

The Corpse on the Dyke was the very first of the Amsterdam Cops series that I read, initially intrigued on the extremely pulpy title! This was in the 1970s and the first copy I bought was used. I was hooked and read all of them. I love the characters, particularly the Commisaris, and the tales progress in such an unconventional way. The conversations that take place are always worthwhile! I am presently reading them all again, loving them as much as I did 25 years ago. They are timeless.
