I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I bought this book, but it turned out to be pretty interesting. I had no idea that Mr. Wood had been acting for so long, and had accomplished so much. Certainly by comparison to DiCaprio, Wood has shown much greater breadth and range of acting. A lot of the book was predictible, [...] but it did cover the basics--biography, filmography, pictures, and trivia. Hopefully this won't be the last book written about this talented young actor!

The Ancient Omen, a book written by Lena Wood, though a fiction book, will help you learn about God. Elijah, Robbie, Reece, Mei, and Skid find a piece of armor at the bottom of a hill that will lead them to the adventure of their lives. During their summer break, in a town where usually nothing happens, Elijah Creek, a fourth grader, and his friends named Robbie, Reece, Mei, and Skid, who are all very adventurous, find a belt but don't know what to do next. When looking for another piece of armor, Elijah, Robbie, Reece, Mei, and Skid find a body that might be the daughter of a man named Dolan. They get into trouble with the police and are forced to tell the truth to what feels like the whole world. Elijah regrets he ever got into this mess. Elijah tries very hard to stay out of trouble but it seems to turn out bad most of the time.
I wasn't like any of the kids in the story because I don't keep secrets and hardly anything exciting ever happens to me. Once though, I did search for treasure in my woods with my friends Rob and Mark, and found some nails with a metal detector. This is my text-to-self connection. Elijah and I are not the same in many ways. For example, he gets into trouble more often than me.
The Ancient Omen is a great book. It explains a lot about Christianity and can help you with some problems you might face in life like lying. I liked it when Elijah and his friends found the belt at the bottom of the hill. If I could change anything in this book it would be instead of finding the belt they would find a sword or shield. People who might like this book are Christians or people who have just become Christians because the armor they find is the armor of God. Third and fourth graders will probably like this book.

My 12 year old daughter started reading this series last Summer, and she holds her breath waiting for each new release. She absolutely loves these books, and I've never seen her so engaged in any book as she is in these. I love that they are Christian-based, and of course, I love that she begs for more reading time before bed so she can read another chapter! You won't be disappointed, and neither will your child. An excellent buy.

With characters both real and heroic, the Elijah Creek series is an inspiring, hard-core tale of friendship and adventure. I found myself falling in love with Elijah, his friends, and the Great Spirit who called them--and calls all of us--into His story.

If you are into folk art, African-American cultural contributions, religious themed art, a woodcarver or just someone who appreciates intricate woodcarving details than you will enjoy and should seek this book. Elijah Pierce's sculptures are broken down into various categories including free standing carvings, religious reliefs, secular reliefs and autobigraphical works. This catologue is from an exhibition from the Columbus Museum of Art that displayed Elijah Pierce's works in 1973, eleven years before his death. They have the largest collection of his works , it features over 200 pieces. His style was unbelieveable, his panels filled with incredible detail, full of emotion, religious fervor and cultural pride. In the book you will see his tribute in wood to sports hero's too like football player Archie Griffin or boxing legend Joe Lewis. Many of the works are patriotic themed , including tributes to Abraham Lincoln. Martin Luther King, The Kennedy's and Paul Revere. One of the things that sets Elijah Pierce apart, besides his technical carving skills, was his colorful painting of the wooden figures or reliefs. He used many different colors including bright solid tones that brought more life into the wood. There are several essays included and the mystical qualities of wood are discusses by him and several other woodcarvers. His life is discussed in the essays, including his hardships as well as his successes, with the end result being an intimate portrait of the artist . Being a man of tremendous religious conviction, coming from a strong religious family, a preacher himself, his carvings became his pulpit. The religious fervor in his carvings are amazing and the biblical stories in wood come to life and jump out at you. His "Book of Wood" is an astounding series of panels bound together and was used on occasion for his sermons but eventually housed in his barbershop where it was the centerpiece of Pierce's art display's. You must find this book to see all the exquisite works of art this master woodcarver created, it will astound you in it's simplicity , varied subject matter and asthetic qualities. Elijah Pierce has left a legacy that should not be missed as it reflects the everyman qualities of the American spirit. Highly recommended for art enthusiasts, folk art collectors, teachers and especially woodcarvers, as it is very inspirational.

I expected your usual sappy fable for dumb kids. Heck, was I surprised. This novel is witty, amusing, and a pleasure to read for children of ALL AGES (I'm 45). Well, even a sequel would be a nifty idea: I liked each and every character, and wanna know more about them! This guy Snow (a pseudonym, I gather from his posting) is real talented. Top-notch job, fella

These days, we can use a shamelessly heartwarming fable and that is exactly what "The Most Beautiful Gift" was to me. The book owes some of its atmosphere to Frank Capra's "feel good" movies but it is as modern as Stephen King's books. A lovely gift for children aged 6 to 90. In Italy we got three more books by this guy and I hope they get published in the States too. The latest one is called "The Little Princess" and moved me to happy tears. I rate "Gift" 4 stars only because "Princess" deserves a somewhat higher mark.

I have taught this book for more than ten years. My students are always moved and inspired by it. This book won the "Living the Dream Award," for the book that embodies the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King. It was a starred Horn Book Magazine and an American Booksellers "Pick of the Lists." It was one of Essence Magazine's favorite books that celebrate African-American life, a CBC-NCSS "Notable 1992 Children's Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies," a Hungry Mind Review Children's Book of Distinction: "...this book creates a line of footprints between the two holidays as it does between two households." It's a Parents Magazine Best Books of 1992 and the winner of the National Jewish Book Award. All those awards mean one thing, but the story is approachable, tender, full of feeling, and broadly appealing to readers of all ages.
We read this every year.

I ordered this book for my 6 year old grand daughter. Though it is a wonderful story, I personally felt that the discussion of hanging the blacks was too dark for the child's book and I returned it. I read the book and felt unfortable giving it, so I had my husband read it, he agreed. Though the truth of the history of the blacks cannot be hid, it really was not needed in this story of friendship.

I am such a huge Aminah Robinson (the illustrator) fan! Be sure to check out all of the books she has illustrated. And don't even think about buying any of them in paperback. The heart and soul that she obviously puts in to her drawings will move you to tears. This is one of my favorites. The Amazon review does a good job explaining the story to you. It really resonates with all ages. One bit of trivia I can give you is that Aminah herself was a personal friend of Elijah Pierce.

As a school media specialist, I purchased this book to add to my lower reading level biographies. It is an easy, quick read with basic facts about the actor. However, I was appalled to see that Gandalf was spelled "Gandolph" on page 30! It made me question how many other errors are in the book, who proofreads these books (it is a very quick read, and I caught it right away) and if the author did his homework thoroughly. Elijah Wood is a very articulate individual who spent years working on Lord of the Rings, and I wonder what he would think about the casual treatment of such a famous character.

As much as I love Elijah Wood, I was very disappointed with this calendar. What I thought I was buying was a "Lord of the Rings" calendar that had all "Frodo" scenes. Instead, there was ONE picture from LOTR, and the rest were all Elijah publicity shots. But that's not the reason I am giving it only one star.
The calendar is completely nonfunctional. It is almost as if the calendar part was an afterthought. What I have is a set of twelve 16-inch high Elijah Wood posters, with the days of each month listed as a string of tiny numbers along the bottom. That's it. No holidays are noted either.
I knew I was taking a chance by buying this calendar sight unseen, but thought it was a pretty sure bet. Learned my lesson.
