John Winston Books

John L'Heureux has written many fine books. Some of the novels are still in print. My favorite work of his, though, can be found in his two story collections -- Comedians and Desires.

Comedians is generally the more popular and highly regarded. For my money, though, Desires is the better book. It has my two favorite L'Heureux stories: "Brief Lives in California" and "The Priest's Wife." The other stories are worth the reader's time, too.

There are more L'Heureux stories floating around uncollected. I've found some of them in literary magazines like Epoch, but I bet I've missed a lot of them, too. Nobody tracks these things, except, probably, Mr. L'Heureux. I wish I was an editor at Knopf or Farrar, Straus, Giroux, so I could bring out The Collected Stories of John L'Heureux, a book that ought to be on the shelves of every library in the United States, for the sake of the pleasure it would bring us all.

Meantime, I'm going to have to satisfy myself with my used copies. The fact that I have been able to purchase them here on Amazon.com makes the Internet worth having.

Hello! I am a Spanish Major at the University of California at Santa Barbara and El Cuento by John A. Crow and Edward Dudley was required for an advanced grammar course. I found the content very useful as it not only introduces the reader to prevalent authors and themes in Spanish literature, but familiarizes the reader with how to read the literature and what to look for.

This is a great product from 1988, possibly even better than the revisions of more recent years. PLEASE NOTE: This book is the teacher's edition. The layout makes it useless to a student.

Sometimes the older textbooks are the best. This one is a early reader, and was published before the 'Whole Language' method became popular. Phonics was still king and this text has a typical mix of various levels of words without more than typical repetition. No 'See Spot run. Run Spot Run'. As a homeschooling parent, I used this book early as a tool for having my child read out loud to me, and also for dictation. It's a wonderful old book.

I barely remember the plot of this book, and of Friday's Tunnel, but I can't forget how much I loved them both. Mysterious and exciting, Verney's books had everything that I still look for in a book to this day. So, I'm now ordering both of them to add to my library. If your child is a reader they'll love February's Road and Friday's Tunnel.

The articles about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington alone should be required reading for all U.S. history classes. Kenneth Starr would have gone wild looking at the private lives of our country's two greatest leaders.

A great and easy to read book with large enough print to be easy on the eyes. One does not need to be a historian to enjoy this book.

I found this book 20 years ago in the Kemmerer, Wyoming Public Library. I loved it. It's about a movie stuntman, written through the voice of his son. What a great character! This book led me to read many of Nichols' books. Highly recommended as a quick, fun read.

This is a GREAT book! John Loya not only shares all of his experiances with the reader of his journey in Ecquador but he makes you feel like you know the people he's met! EVERYONE should have a copy of this book!! Very inspirational!
