This review is entitled "Confirmation" because it serves to confirm or ratify what, intuitively, I have felt for as long as I can recall. Having been raised in a strongly religious family, I have been exposed to various versions of the Holy Bible, all of which tended to depict and illustrate all personalities with white faces. Given that all of the accounts in the Bible took place on the continent of Africa, prior to the arrival of any significant numbers of Europeans, it was very difficult for me to accept that none of the major figures in the Bible was Black, yet that is what is portrayed. Although I felt that something was "wrong with this picture", I had no way to refute it, and in fact, was reluctant to voice it among some of my own friends and elders who would have deemed such thoughts as sacrilegious, or worse. It still bothered me, nonetheless. As my educational experiences progressed, I had increasing difficulty reconciling what was thrust upon me by the media, those omnipresent Bible illustrations, TV Evangelists, and others who perpetuated the same notion that all of the personalities in the Bible were white. I began to research on my own, and with the advent of the Internet, other avenues were opened to me. I have read a number of other treatises and writings by other distinguished Black religious scholars on the issue of the Black presence in the Bible, all of which enlightened me, and at the same time gave me a deep sense of "connection" with those Biblical personalities, as well as a sense of pride. On the other hand, it also aroused in me a sense of anger and frustration, as it confirmed to me that religious history, just as history in general, has been manipulated, twisted, distorted, and violated for the very sinister and express purpose of discrediting a People and robbing them of a very rich heritage and perpetuating a myth of so-called "superiority". This book should be mandatory reading, not just for Blacks, but for whites, as well, who have themselves been, in the words of Carter G. Woodson, "miseducated". I applaud Dr. Johnson and his colleagues, who are making an invaluable contribution to the telling of OUR history, as too often the euphamism that history is simply "his story" as it pertains to Blacks, is validated over and over. My record will reflect that I have ordered multiple copies of this book in the past, and am at this writing ordering several more copies. They make great gifts, and I can't imagine a better gift than the gift of truth.

I encountered this book years ago in the University Hills Library in Austin, Texas. Burned by my involvement with my previous church and ministry, I had become disillusioned, distraught and lacking in faith. Atheism, before the current popular tomes advocating a departure from all faiths, appealed to me. This literally turned my head and halted me in my tracks. I checked it out - 3 times - before purchasing it on Amazon.

This is a wellspring that allows one to hold his/her head up as we see (now) played out in American politics the onslaught against African Americans by forces on the left and right that do not know the contributions Africans have made not only to world culture but to the most significant spiritual expression in Western civilization. Current events find European Americans still ignorant of the complex Homiletics of the African Diaspora and its spiritual entities. "Black Liberation Theology" is something now discovered on Fox News and sound bites on You Tube the complete philosophy of Senator Obama's former pastor. It is a willful ignorance born of arrogance and hegemony from the previous "peculiar institution" formerly known as slavery that would birth such a tradition.

"Our people perish due to a lack of [self] knowledge." (Hosea 4:6) And the knowledge should be shared, discussed and preached. It should be used to build us up as a people; to "set the captives free." (Luke 4:18)

[...]: "About 10.4% of the entire African-American male population in the United States aged 25 to 29 was incarcerated, by far the largest racial or ethnic group--by comparison, 2.4% of Hispanic men and 1.2% of white men in that same age group were incarcerated. According to a report by the Justice Policy Institute in 2002, the number of black men in prison has grown to five times the rate it was twenty years ago. Today, more African-American men are in jail than in college. In 2000 there were 791,600 black men in prison and 603,032 enrolled in college. In 1980, there were 143,000 black men in prison and 463,700 enrolled in college." Too many of our men are in prison because they are unaware who they are, and thus misbehave.

I heartily recommend this book as enthusiastically as I did years ago when it stopped me literally in my tracks.

The book The Lost Race of Mars was a fictional and inacurate book. The author obviously did not do any research. It is funny to see how people from the 1960's thought life would be in 2007. The two protagonists are obsessed with a family pet and cant be torn away from their home to go on a dream vacation on Mars. Mr Silverberg really didnt work very hard on his book this time.

This was one of the first books I ever read. I loved it as a child and thought it was a very good CHILDREN'S book written from an early 1960s perspective. It is fantasy. Perhaps some of the other reviewers might take this into perspective before engaging in name calling.

This is the first science fiction book I ever read! It changed my life as I read about the expolits of two children living in a Mars colony. The young boy and girl discover that there is, indeed, life on Mars. This is an excellent book to introduce science fiction to a child. Well-written with science facts yet the two protaganists are likeable and interesting. If you love science fiction, share this with your children and spark that same love in them!

Perhaps your interest in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was piqued by the Oliver Stone Film "JFK." Maybe you are an American History buff who wants to know more about one of the most terrible moments in the 20th century. Maybe you are just tired of listening to so-called "conspiracy theorists" and want to go straight to their sources to find out just how nuts they really are. No matter where you are coming from, you are in for more than you bargained for with this book.

In a nutshell, this book sets out to prove that a President of the United States was murdered by a conspiracy that involved the military industrial complex, organized crime and the CIA, along with disgruntled Cuban expatriots who were enraged at JFK for his handling of the Bay of Pigs. It also attempts to prove that this conspiracy was covered up by an amazing level of cooperation between various people and organizations who all had a reason to want President Kennedy dead. It seeks to show that the most powerful of these groups, was the group made up of all those who wanted, indeed needed, a war in Vietnam. It seeks to show that President Kennedy was murdered because he was committed to having all U.S. military forces out of Vietnam by 1965.

If, after reading this, you still have the stomach to venture into this nightmarish theory, you will find a well-reasoned, exhaustively researched, meticulously footnoted and beautifully written book of scholarly construction, with copious endnotes, a complete bibliography, and a full index. You will find well-reasoned paragraphs, incisive reasoning and theories that would be impossible to believe, if Henry Hurt did not do such a professional job of both documenting and interpreting his sources.

In the end, you may well find yourself feeling dismay and grief, at the realization that this book has shattered your illusions about America and its institutions right down to their foundations. More than any other book in my experience, "Reasonable Doubt" reinforces the timeless truths, that ceaseless vigilence is the price of freedom, and that the responsibility of every citizen in a democracy is to keep his/her eyes, ears and mouth open.

very good book...up to 1985, that is

Henry Hurt's "Reasonable Doubt" is a very fine book that only suffers from the passage of time. Since the "JFK" movie, the JFK Records Collection Act, and the ARRB, many revelations have come forward that make this book alittle dated and/ or redundant. Also, the Easterling 'confession' is still weak. That said, still recommended, epecially for the novice.

I have the original hardback edition of this book, and found it to be very well researched and written. Besides the history of the great German biplane bombers, it explains the frustration of England in developing a defense against this new type of warfare. Also, the fight in the English government to establish an independant Air Force is also discussed. An interesting read for history students or aviation enthusiasts.

Have you ever bought a book because you were interested in the subject matter, only to realize upon reading the first chapter that the writer does not know how to entertain? If you have, then brace yourself, because this book is NOT like that. The author filled each chapter with relevant insights into the characters that make up the events. Not once was I overpowered by facts alone. I have read highly praised novels that lacked the emotion, suspense, etc, that this book displays. To top it off, the author writes with unbelievable knoweldge of a subject that is too often overlooked: the implications of the First Battle of Britian.

I have used the Harbrace College Handbook for 31 years. My first was the 5th Edition, which I keep on the top in one of my desk drawers. I used it throughout college. I bought this edition for my father, who gave me the first one, and seems to have lost his own copy (he's 86!). This edition is much thicker than the 5th one -- these books are not exactly "reading material," but a reference guide; so I haven't read it from cover to cover. This book comes with a computer CD to install the entire book on your computer.

My grandmother gave this beautiful book to me for Christmas the year it was published. (I believe it was 1980 or 1981). I feel madly in love and am still madly in love today. I re-read this book every year in October, it has become a most beloved ritual. I took a chance in early 1992 and wrote to John Nichols and was I ever surprised! He wrote me back. I have two copies and now that they have a new edition, I plan on buying it too! I have a hard back signed copy that I treasure and I know it is authentic because the signature is exactly the way he signed his letter to me. Read this book and plan to be thoroughly enchanted. I was and still am after almost 20 years.

The Story of a Bad Boy is one of my favorite books. It's interesting, humorous, and touching, and gives you an inside look at the life of a boy in Massachusetts in the early 1800s. I love the author's style of writing. It seems to make the story all the more humorous, and brings you back to those olden days. I also love this book because it's a true story, and this kid led a life full of adventures and mishaps. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Tom Sawyer because these two books are similar, and the two boys have the same type of mischievous personalities. Yet in spite of similarities, Bad Boy is unique because it's true.

This neat little novel is written in the tradition of Tom Sawyer, though it appeared 5 years earlier than Twain's classic. It's about all the mischief, chivalry, loyalty, and pluck of a young boy's life. Aldrich is in love with his material and revels in all the antics his characters get involved in. The snowball fight is a gem. The boyhood dialogue is excellent and rings true.

very compelling Book about Big house and His legacy which has him as One of the winningest Coaches Ever in College Basketball. but this Book reflects on the struggle and Bridiging the gap socially and spiritually. Humor keeps things into perspective in the Book, but what Big House had to deal with in Jim Crow America,etc... is no laughing matter and this book pulls no punches, but it speaks directly about the game on the court and the game of life and so much else in between. very Powerful.

Big House was a great coach - the fifth best in history of college basketball but more importantly he was a guy with a sense of values and a good sense of humor. He knows basketball as well as anyone in the country and has some candid comments about how to improve the game. But his real commitment was to the students he coached. He experienced the bitter bite of segregation - working for an HBCU called Winston Salem State - but his memoir is better than a rant - it is a reflection of his insight and integrity.

This book stands on its own merits as an engaging, easy-to-read yet informative work of history, the proof of which is that it sold out its first printing. Althoug it doesn't need the likes of me to praise it, I can say that I have read and re-read this book and still draw great enjoyment from it. Actually, I only discovered that this excellent book has been languishing without a review because I was trying to track down its video companion, which aired on PBS during the 1980s and which was my original introduction to John Romer. I am captivated Romer's ability to weave together the bits and pieces (often, quite literally, "bits and pieces") of the everyday lives of a special group of ancient Egyptians, the excavators and artists of the Great Place, the famous Valley of the Kings. Ancient Lives is the story of the villagers who lived in semi-isolation on the west bank of the Nile, whose profession it was to build and decorate the Royal tombs of the Pharaohs. Romer is an everyman's Egyptologist, full of wonder, energy, solid knowledge of his subject, and an I-wonder-what's-over-that-next-ridge kind of infectious curiosity, combined with a natural story teller's sense of drama and language. The villagers' story, as it turns out, has survived them due to the dilligence of the Royal Scribes assigned to the village. Romer knits together the information left by them on papyrus, limestone ostracons, and the occaisional carved graffiti, into a kind of family history, where individuals' personalities and passions, even their peccadillos, bring them and their village vividly back to life. It's a book worth looking for.

Hi Keith,

If your still reading Romer's books and STILL would like to get a copy of "Ancient Lives" on VHS, try your local library. That's how I got mine.

The book is fantastic! No one can weave Egyptian antiquity the way Romer does. I am sorry that so few of his documentaries are seen here in the States.
