My husband remembered loving this series as a kid and was delighted to be able to get them for our son. At age 7 our son would read the Enchanted Wood and the Faraway Tree over and over. Enid Blyton connects perfectly with the magical imagination of kids this age.
A Wonderful Magical Book

I remember reading this book as a little girl. Enid Blyton is in my opinion the best children's writers. Now that I'm a mom I'm getting this book and other Blyton favourites for my kids.

I remember reading this book when I was little. I recently came across it again at my parent's house and found it to be just as delightful now at 32 as I did when I was 7! It is filled with magical wonder and fantasy. A great recommendation for children of all ages!

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY is an excellent book by one of the great authors of all time. However, the large-print volume (issued by Pavilion Press) that I purchased for my wife is one of the worst-bound books I have ever seen. The pages literally fell out as she was reading, no matter how careful she was. There are also numerous typographical errors throughout. This is a shame, because the format is quite attractive and the print size is very good. I wrote a letter of complaint to the publisher, but received no reply.

I love the narrator, I love her accent. It took me a little longer to figure out the whole story since I didn't catch her for the most part. But I think it is not uncommon for a foreigner to find some difficulties in getting used to her accent.
I like British accent although sometimes I cannot understand them.

Okay, I wrote a review on this novel about 4 days ago, and I don't think it's going to show up on here, so I'll give it another try.
I can't help but love Jane Austen. She is my guilty pleasure read, like a Jackie Collins of the early 19th century because her novels are just drenched in drama and scandal. They are not really a thinking man's novel, just fun stories to read. I also enjoy the romance aspects of her novels because they are classy, not like the trash smut you read in today's modern "romance" stories. I feel almost uncomfortable and embarrassed when I read a modern romance story. Well anyhow, when it comes to drama and scandal, Sense and Sensibility does not disappoint. When you commit to the story, it really takes you in. I really enjoyed the protagonist, Elinor, but I was unhappy with Austen's Marianne character. It seems as if Austen could truly identify with Elinor because she did a great job developing her character as level-headed, proud, and classy. Perhaps she took a little Elinor from herself? Now, in the beginning of the novel you get drawn in by Marianne. She commands a good third of the book with her story and her character starts off well developed. You get a true feeling for her impetuousness. She is emotional, passionate, wears her heart on her sleeve. The novel is so interesting until the end. The end completely disappoints. Now I don't know if Austen became uninspired at the end of the novel or just didn't know how to end it better, but it falls completely flat. Like I mentioned before, you get interested in this Marianne character and you know how she is, but then at the end she decides one day to become like Elinor?! Just like that?! An impetuous person like Marianne would not and could not do a 180 with their mannerisms. Then, Austen does no justice to Marianne by having her marry at the end of the novel. It is just so dubious it doesn't make sense. Austen also wraps up all the scandal and drama in almost 3 pages. How convenient! That was just bogus to me. But the rest of the story is so good I would still recommend this, especially to Austen fans. If I were to make a recommendation to a new Austen reader, I would recommend Pride and Prejudice over Sense and Sensibility. It is more concise and it is a shorter novel.

I used to wonder why so many people preferred Pride and Prejudice over Sense and Sensibility. What differences were dynamic enough to make so many people sway? I read the novel and was intrigued, yet not as much as I was when reading Pride and Prejudice.
Sense and Sensibility is a delightful story with characters easy to fall in love with. You automatically root for Elinor at the drop of a hat, and though we prefer to think of Marianne as someone completely different from ourselves, we resist reproaching her and root for her instead. Though I wouldn't call it Austen's best, this book is a great way to pass time, especially on a shaded porch swing in a drizzle.

My now 8mo daughter received this for Christmas. At first, I wasn't as crazy about it as the Philadelphia Chickens CD. However, it's made its way into the vehicle's music rotation and has grown on me. There are very few CDs that my daughter will tolerate, and this is one of them. It took some time for me to warm up to the CD, but most of the songs are amusing. I do find the Cow Planet songs irritating, and consequently they are skipped, hence the 4-star rating.

I have other CDs from Sandra Boyton and group. This CD just is not as good. The songs are not charming, witty or catchy, unlike the other CDs Sandra Boyton has been involved with. I probably would purchase other CDs from this group, with the hope they would be as good as the others I have.

WOW, is all I can say about Sean Penn in this great movie. I've had FARGO as my all time favorite movie, now this is replacing it. I watched twice in one night.
The cinematography was excellent and being a Southern lover, I enjoyed the scenery and New Orleans scenes.
I never thought Sean Penn would be my new favorite actor, but he did an excellent job in this film as the viewer vacillates between love and hate for his colorful portrayal of Huey Long-like Governor of Louisiana.

The re-make of"All the king's men" based upon the novel by Robert Penn Warren is a classic, despite the general atmosphere of failure and mis-casting fabricated by many of the paid critics..One need only watch the film to understand this.Sean Penn,a great actor but also an outspoken critic of The Bush war and the Bush white house, and an unapologetic"liberal"to boot, stars as Louisiana politician Willie Stark,a personage based on real life Louisiana icon Huey"Kingfish"Long..The fact that Penn is widely recognised not so much for his acting as for his own politics perhaps made him an easy target, both for critics and for the viewing public at large..James Carville, political pundit and Bill Clinton confidant produced the film as much as a political statement as a piece of entertainment, another strike against it...and then there is the storyline itself, still rich and alive despite the fact that it was first outlined more than half a century ago..A basicly honest populist small time politician defeats both the entrenched interests and the political bosses and becomes the people's govenor, only to fall prey to flaws in his own charecter, and ultimately fail..Sound familiar?(I mean other than as the plotline of this movie & the novel upon which it is based that is?)...Once again it would seem to me that reactions to this film, with this star, this producer and this message at this time had more to do with the poor reception the film got than with any short-comings in either acting or direction...

Alabama Governor George Wallace and Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long
were pretty much extreme opposites that led to the same kind of end.
The 1949 version of the movie of the Pulitzer prize winning novel
wasn't as good as this one. The Robert Penn Warren novel
is much like the tales in poetry of legendary figures who are bigger than
others of their time. Andrew Jackson was a similar populist leader
of the south. Why does love and hate come together in a leader
such that people seek to kill him?
The acting in this movie is first rate and the filming and direction are also good. I think this is closer than the original movie
to capturing the poetry of the novel.

Ehh!....that's how I feel about "All the King's Men"....ehh! Based on the exploits of the real-life Gov. Huey Long of Louisiana in the person of Willie Stark as "interpreted" by Sean Penn and written AND directed by Steve Zaillian (and that is where I see the problem in this film; Zaillian who wrote Schindler's List (Widescreen Edition), Awakenings and Gangs of New York (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) maybe should have stepped away!!!)
A great cast of actors, very miscast, a wandering screenplay, uneven direction, a film badly in need of a dialogue coach...what else? This film seemed as if it aspired to greatness, but alas I was left ultimately flat after 128 minutes. Sean Penn was overbaked and Winslet and Ruffalo undercooked. Clarkson-spot-on as she always is, but not much of a part! Hopkins as a Louisiana Judge????????
Set designer, Patrizia Brandenstein (Amadeus - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)), does expert work, only to have it choked out by ton's of closeups. What a waste!
Even the extras on the DVD did nothing to really spark my enthusiasm any more than the film tried to do. Filmed on location? Big deal when you hardly see any of it! Truly, a film with lots of rhetoric with no real punch. Hmmm....just like politicians!
James Horner soundtrack was better than this film was.

"All the King's Men" is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel written by Robert Penn Warren. Warren, who shifted from poetry to prose to write this novel, got his inspiration from the Populist Louisiana politician, Huey Long.
The film, based on a screenplay by Steve Zaillian, is also based in Louisiana. The politician, Willie Stark (Penn), runs a parallel course to Long's illustrious career. He started out meaning well and his interest was always in the common man, 'hicks' like him. The story is narrated by newspaper reporter, Jack Burden (Law) who works for Sparks.
There's a lot of strong messages in "All the King's Men." You can watch it from the perspective of a soap opera, a parallel to contemporary politics (the discussion of the oil companies' influence, for example) or an Ivory Tower comparison to Machiavelli.
This film could have been great, had they decided a few aspects differently. To quote the film itself: "You only get a couple of moments that determine your life. Sometimes only one. And then it's gone. Forever." Probably the worst decision the directors made was changing the timeframe the film is set in. If you ignore that the film's set twenty years past Long's time, it works a lot better. I don't agree with the decision that the 50's are interchangeable historically with the 30's.
