If you are from the South or just enjoy reading Southern fiction this series is a must read. I heard about Anne George because she was my husband's eigth grade English teacher - and she is definitely a hidden gem. The humor reminds me of the Stephanie Plum series - so if you like wacky, murder mystery fun - dig in!

Religion and snake handlers

Our two favourite southern sisters get up to more hijinks in this book when they run across a travelling preacher who also handles snakes. We also finally get to meet Cousin Puke Lukey! Cousin Luke enlists the aid of Patricia Anne and Mary Alice to help track down his missing wife who has run off with a preacher. And while they are doing this, they end up in more trouble than you can shake a stick at. Of course there are dead bodies as these two girls always seem to be stumbling over, but oh what fun as we read about their antics. I absolutely love these two old dears, and am really sorry that there is only one more story to read. Ms. George was definitely taken from us too soon.

How Can You Resist a Book that Includes a Character Named Pukey Lukey?

I laughed the first time I heard Patricia Ann and Mary Alice refer to their cousin in that way simply because he used to get car sick as a child. I laughed even harder when they referred to him as "Puke." Ann George not only has a refreshing and bluntly witty writing style, but her characters really come alive from page to page. In fact these two 60-something southern sleuths are so youthful and vibrant, one often forgets their ages and imagines them to be 20 years younger.

Poor Luke. His wife of 40 years, Virginia, has taken off with a house painter who is also a reverend, and when the sisters go with him to find his wife, they find a dead woman in "Monk's" church instead, and the reverend is discovered dead in Virginia's car--all full of snakebites. The reverend was a snake handler to boot. Add this, a bunch of suspicious characters, a romance between sister Mary Alice and the sheriff, lots of snappy sparkling dialog, and you have the makings of a fine and entertaining mystery that echoes a cross between Murder She Wrote and The Golden Girls. This was my first Southern Sisters novel, and I definitely wouldn't rule out more. I laughed and kept on guessing who the killer was up until the last 2 chapters. I hope you are as amused and intrigued as I was. Southern charm has never been more irresistible.

Pukey Lukey Bangs his Head

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books in this series so far and this one may well be the best of the bunch. Just where else could you find a story about a guy nicknamed Pukey Lukey whose wife ran off with a snake-handling preacher who was painting their house. Mary Alice (Sister) and Patricia Anne (Mouse) are always hilarious but with a plot line like this anybody could be funny.

Readers of this series will be familiar with Pukey Lukey and his wife Virginia from previous books. Cousin Luke got his nickname because he was prone to carsickness as a child and he has yet to live the name down. Out of the blue he contacts his cousins to inform them that Virginia has run off with the above-mentioned preacher and he enlists their help in finding her. The preacher lives on Chandler Mountain north of Birmingham and so off the sisters and Lukey go on a mission to at least find out if Virginia is okay. They find the preacher's home and church with little problem but there is nobody at home so Luke checks the church. When he fails to return to the car the sisters go in to investigate and find Luke bleeding on the floor and worse yet they find a dead body.

The search for Virginia and the killer are the stories that make up the mystery in this book and the mystery remains surprisingly in focus when you consider the characters that are involved in this story. As if the snake-handling, house painting preacher wasn't enough there are some of the most memorable characters I have ever come across to be found in these pages. From the hillbilly professor who is also a collector of books to the county sheriff who falls for Mary Alice and from the professor's snuff dipping mother to the Chandler Mountain Booger this book is just overflowing with characters with character. If the Booger and the sheriff aren't enough for you, well the Pope himself is actually involved in this book as is a new baby and to some extent George Wallace.

As usual this author displays her gift for dialogue in this book and her imagination must have been running in overdrive when she wrote this one. It is hilarious how Sister keeps tempting Luke by promising that she will let him ride in her Jag while she knows full well that the Pukey one will never set foot in her car. In the end of course the mystery is solved and as usual the sisters almost get killed once they figure out who done it. As with most cozy mysteries this one has a happy ending, at least for the sisters. Pukey Lukey on the other hand might ought to learn to be careful what he wishes for.

4.5 stars for poor portability

I rate it 4.5 stars only because this book is way too big to carry to class--it's like putting a baby in your backpack. On top of the syllabi you have to lug around, the weight is ridiculous. In terms of the actual content, it's an excellent desktop resource. All drugs are organized by disease state. Literally, the drug Bible (tissue paper pages and all). I recommend it for at home/pharmacy use only, otherwise you might need a forklift.

Nice.

Applied Therapeutics is a very detailed, thorough, and informative compilation of assorted health care matters.

The text is easy to read and the numerous sample cases studies in each chapter ensures that the reader fully understands and is able to apply the information presented. It is also an excellent method to reinforce the enormous amount of information health care providers are presented with in daily practice.

The free CD-ROM (which you must request on their website with a coupon code attached in the back of the book) is a very portable version of this hefty textbook.

A word of caution: This is defintely not an "introductory" book. A little working knowledge of biology, pharmacology, and disease states is a must.

Overall, awesome textbook for interning students.

I have a master's degree in special education but have been in the business world for over twenty years. This book has given me a new zest for the field of special education. The insights give each side of discussions and leaves the reader to make decisions. The on line labs are excellent. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for wide views of the current challenges and progress in the field of special education.

This is a great text if you are looking for an introductory course text for special education. It is well suited for college and university students or teachers looking to learn more about children as it is easy to read and very informative. With chapters ranging from Planning and Providing Special Education Services to Students with Learning Disabilities to Gifted and Talented Students this text can be of appeal to a wide variety of those who would like to know more about children and how to help children attain their potential. I learned so much - I hope you will too.

I was astonished by both how readable this book is and how much useful information is presented. The book is designed for those entering the field of education and those studying for the Praxis II exam. While the book is targeted to the teaching of exceptional children, regular education teachers, parents and other interested parties would gain a great deal of information from this book. Our assignment was to skim the book - a task I found nearly impossible. I kept getting drawn into the interesting and vivid examples in each chapter. I found the focus questions and review sections to be particularly helpful.

A Great Book If You Want An Intro to Special Education

I love this book! I purchased a used copy in 2001 to help prepare for my (then) upcoming Massachusetts State Teacher exam in special education, which I passed on my first try. It is a very useful source of information and contains a ton of facts. It presents special ed topics in a logical fashion and has a nice companion website. I practiced all the online questions since I had to learn a lot of material in a short period of time. The text is geared towards elementary education. However, I read it, even though my field is secondary SPED, because there are many things in it that relate to special education in general that I need to know about. The discussion of historical special ed legislation is especially complete. I just wish I could get my hands on the companion videos that are (or were) offered by the publisher.

If I were stranded on a desert island...this would be the book I'd want with me.

This is the cookbook my family uses over and over again. Every recipe I have tried has indeed been easy to make and tasted terrific. You'd think that easy-to-make recipes would be too homey or bland to serve to guests, but any dish in this book would impress a dinner guest. The recipes often take longer than 20 minutes, but I am still in love with this cookbook and encourage busy cooks with high standards for taste and quality to seek it out.

I love to cook, but have no time. Most cookbooks promise easy-to-prepare recipes, but end up requiring ingredients I don't have, more time than you think, or just don't taste good. What a relief to happen on 365 20-Minute Recipes! The recipes are so easy, they taste great, and even my kids love them. I've prepared at least 35 of the recipes and every one of them is good!

Though there are some weird recipes in here (jalapeno macaroni and cheese!), the pasta dishes especially deliver on the promise: really flavorful, really fast. The author does not shy from capers, anchovies, cayenne pepper, fresh cilantro, and other high-taste ingredients.

It's quick, easy and GOURMET in minutes!

They ended up deleting my order, didn't tell me, then I had to track down why they deleted it. I also had the pleasure of dealing with their customer support staff based in India -- that was quite an experience. Ended up having to order twice. I now purchase my books online from Barnes and Noble now. I ended up buying one book from Target -- it was supposed to be a present for someone. Amazon won't stay in business!

At last. Shakespeare study notes that are really authoritative, accurate and enthusiastic. This new edition of Cliff's notes on Macbeth is outstanding. There are all the usual things that would be expected in notes of this type, but added to this is a real sensitivity in the appreciation of the language, and also an awareness of Macbeth as a play to be performed. it is perhaps this sensitivity that sets these notes apart. The author communicates a passion for the play by opening it up to everyone in the excellent scene-by-scene analysis. shakespare has never seemed so accessible, relevant and exciting. The suggested tasks are particulalrly inventive- a useful tool for teachers and students.

This is a wonderful book about a young woman reaching a crisis in her life. It is not corny fiction. It is completely and brutally honest about women's true feelings about men, and it has an ending that will make your hair stand on end. Carter is one terrific writer -- at once sensitive and poetic and yet completely down to earth and willing to get into the gutter. I recommend it highly.

a fable about selfishness
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-28
The Emperor's Plum Tree was translated from the French by Elizabeth Shub. It's a book well worth bringing into print in English. An emperor who requires beauty and perfection all around him is upset when one plum tree in his garden dies, throwing off the entire harmony of the design. He searches his kingdom looking for a replacement and finds a tree, commanding his servants to dig it up and bring it to his palace. The tree is the home of a nightingale who is the friend of a small boy, Musuko. The boy writes a note to the emperor on a small scroll and ties it to the branches of the tree as it is carried away. When the emperor goes out to enjoy his garden in its restored loveliness, he sees the scroll and asks that it be brought to him. When he reads the note (a beautiful drawing of the the plum tree with the nightingale perched on its branches and a poem) "At the long day's end/when the nightingale flies home/what shall I tell her?", the emperor is suddenly struck with the realization of his selfishness and restores the tree to its rightful home.

This fable is perfect for the Preschool child. It is simple, cleanly written with not too much text on a page, and has lovely illustrations. It is a little-known story that is worth tracking down. I give it my highest recommendation.
