Masterful Insights Into The Spiritual Exercises
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-30
Barry is a very well known, highly respected and extremely experienced spiritual director, retreat director, and psychologist who writes this text out of that wealth of theoretical knowledge and pastoral experience for spiritual directors and primarily for directors of Ignatian retreats. The title affirms a faith that God deals directly with souls and the director's task is merely to facilitate that relationship, assisting retreatants to clarify their desires, be open to God's self-revelation, and understand their unique role in the divine plan using imaginative prayer, feeling, discernment and previous touchstone religious experience. These themes and more are developed in this masterful text that would be profitable not just to spiritual directors but to anyone whose spirituality is Ignatian or based in the Spiritual Exercises.

Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray

Read the actual text! Barry Lyndon is one the most beautifully crafted films, but Kubrick's screenplay is not the Thackeray novel.

Review Date: 1997-12-06
The history of environmental law in this country is one of media by media legislation where pollution is chased from air to water to land rather than cleaned-up. In this book Celia Campbell-Mohn et.al. revolutionizes the way in which environmental law is organized and analyzed. Instead of breaking the environment into sectors as resources (species, minerals) and sinks for pollution (air, land, water, groundwater) she creates a new approach, the Resources To Recovery model, which divides the human interfaces with nature into sectors (extraction, manufacture and disposal) and treats nature comprehensivly within each interface. This book is totally unlike any other effort to understand and organize our legal relationship to the environment and it deserves attention. If you have time to read but one book in the area of environmental law and policy this year, this should be it......

For The Professional Or The Amateur, A Treasury Of Diverse Celestial Objects

An extraordinary and beautiful publication, this register of southern hemisphere galaxies surpasses Arp's 1966 compendium of northern objects in scope, detail, and variety. The plates, prints of black and white negatives from the U.K. Schmidt Telescope in Australia, inspire deep curiosity and evoke stunning beauty. Though presented without adornment in the plain style of an academic list, the images quicken a sense of the sacred, while also testifying to which strains of cosmological theory will endure. For example, do these pictures reveal evidences of galactic mergers and cannibalisms, or of galactic births and extended families?

The heart of Volume I ("Positions and Descriptions") is the full list with astronomical coordinates of 6445 galaxies and associations which Arp and Madore identified from 537 plates of the southern hemisphere during 8 years of research. Of greater interest to the non-specialist, though, Volume I also contains extended discussions of the categories which are used to classify the galaxies, and an informative Preface and Introduction which provide interesting background for Volume II.

Volume II ("Selected Photographs") contains 998 photographic negatives of representative members of each category, especially the spectacular examples. A visual feast, it also features added descriptions of the categories. This volume by itself is self-explanatory, and when purchased alone, suffices for the non-specialist.

I remember discovering the original 1966 Catalogue in the stacks of my college library. I spent hours and hours pondering its pages, astonished by its richness and inexplicability in terms of then-current theory. This 1987 catalog follows the organization of that first catalog, while improving upon the categories and illustrating them with yet more wondrous images of unorthodox-looking galaxies and the fields of objects surrounding them. These associations, in fact, held the keys to understanding galactic formation and to gaining a more accurate picture of the universe, Arp believed. Time will tell, I believe, that Arp was right, and that together with a select group of scientists, he has long been at the forefront of work that is leading to the most encompassing theory of cosmology yet developed. These catalogs are the mesmerizing record of that early work. They are, in relation to whatever new model which eventually will supplant the Big Bang theory (the Electric Universe model, most likely), perhaps what Galileo's Sidereus Nuncius is to the Copernican Revolution.

More affordable and accessible than the 1966 Catalogue, this southern catalog is a must-have for the collector.

Good collection in a great series

Review Date: 2006-10-15
Throughout the two decades from 1964 to 1984, Fontana published a remarkable skein of ghost story collections, piloted by R. Aikman and later by R. Chetwynd-Hayes, no mean supernatural authors themselves. Some of the paperbacks in this series, which winds its way up to the "20th Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories" are now collectors' items and worth over a hundred dollars apiece.

For this fourth book in the series, Robert Aickman selected eleven supernatural tales, including Alexander Pushkin's "The Queen of Spades" which was also made into an opera--an unusual fate for a ghost story!

These are the tales in the 4th Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories:

"The Accident" by Ann Bridge--Many great ghost stories are set in the Alps and this is one of them. A pair of climbers, brother and sister, come across a set of tracks that begin in an open snowfield, near the place where two other climbers had fallen to their deaths a month earlier. Then the sister begins to receive postcards from one of the dead climbers.

"Not on the Passenger List" by Barry Pain--A young widow takes passage on a ship to England, where she is to remarry. Her late husband appears in her cabin and tries to persuade her to drown herself.

"The Sphinx without a Secret" by Oscar Wilde--Aikman cheated by including this story, which has no ghost. A mysterious young woman is confronted by her fiancé, who breaks off their engagement.

"When I was Dead" by Vincent O'Sullivan--A young man witnesses his own funeral.

"The Queen of Spades" by Alexander Pushkin--An 87-year-old Countess dies before revealing her supposed secret for winning at cards. Her ghost appears to the man who frightened her to death, revealing the cards he needed to play in order to win a fortune. Would you trust the ghost of the woman you frightened to death?

"Pargiton and Harby" by Desmond MacCarthy-- Harby meets his old friend, Pargiton who seems to be making amends for an ill-spent life. Pargiton begs Harby to visit him, because he seems to bring out the best in the reformed evil-doer. Harby comes, but so does something else.

"The Snow" by Hugh Walpole--The two Mrs. Ryders, one of them dead, battle over their meek, inoffensive husband.

"Carlton's Father" by Eric Ambrose--I would classify this story as science fiction, since it involves a time warp, disguised as a room in Carlton's house, where no-one ages.

"A School Story" by M.R. James--Two men reminisce over the ghost stories that were told about their public schools. One of them concerns a master with a homicidal past.

"The Wolves of Cernogratz" by Saki--Wolves howl around the castle when one of the Cernogratz family dies.

"Mad Monkton" by William Wilkie Collins--Generations of the reclusive Monkton family suffered from hereditary insanity. Alfred, last of the Monkton line falls in love with the beautiful young Ada, but before he can propose to her, he must travel to Italy to recover the body of his Uncle Stephen, the black sheep of the Monkton family, who was killed in a duel. Everyone thinks Alfred is crazy for trying to recover the body, but an old family prophecy and the ghost of Uncle Stephen urge him onward.

I am a high school business teacher and I received this book along with the various teacher editions. However, because our order was for only 3 student books, I was not given the student version of the chapter working papers. This made making lesson plans tedious because I needed to format sheets to match, so needless to say, I was NEVER so happy to see that Amazon had the student version! The book arrived in a timely fashion and my students and I are diligently working on accounting (although I think I was much happier to see the book than they were!)

THANKS AMAZON!

This is a different kettle of fish to Tony Attwood. But very valuable. Tony is a god and the tone is optimistic generally which is good as an introduction but he doesn't get to the nitty gritty of faecal soiling or being awake all night! This book is more directly concerned with specific problems of behaviour. Education is not covered. I wish I had had it when my own AS child was awake all night long. I would have tried the technique that keeps them up 1 hour longer than the time they drop off eventually!

Very practical, very sensible. If you havnt got a particular problem they discuss then thank your lucky stars and be grateful. If you have then this will give you good advice.
