Timeless works from a pioneering Indian authorReview Date: 2001-11-22
his very useful introduction). The writings of William Apess are, regrettably, still highly relevant even now. This is partly because of the universal import of the issues of religious conversion, ethnic identity and the personal challenges he confronted, but even more because American Indians are still denied the civil and human rights enjoyed by other Americans. Apess's fiery prose and profound insights into the American experience from his Indigenous perspective are guaranteed not only to shed much light on his life and times, but will shatter cherished misconceptions of European Americans concerning the presumed fairness of our society.
Opponents of multiculturalism would probably complain that yet another insignificant author has been dredged up from the past. But Apess is not obscure, rather, his brilliance was obscured through the neglect of those who most needed to hear his message. There is much more to his work than merely documenting the victimization of Indians. As author, minister and also activist on behalf of his congregation of Mashpee Wampanoags in the 1830s, Apess's life work testifies eloquently that Indians have always exercised agency in shaping their history and ours as a whole---even in circumstances not of their choosing.

"Caissons in front of your pieces--Trot--March!"Review Date: 2008-01-08
The 1864 Field Artillery Tactics manual, one of Stackpole's series of reprinted Civil War field manuals, was originally published in 1860 and revised, although only slightly, in 1864. (The revised edition carries the stern warning by curmudgeonly Secretary of War Edwin Stanton that "all additions to or departures from the exercise laid down in [this] system are positively forbidden"!) It was written by three captains of artillery--William French, William Barry, and Henry Jackson Hunt--who, by war's end, all rose to general rank (unusual for artillery officers in the Civil War era). Between the three of them, they revolutionized the way the U.S. Army understood artillery. (Hunt, for example, campaigned for and eventually succeeded in having artillery units detached from divisional command, thereby ending the fragmentary dispersion of artillery that characterized the war at least through Chancellorsville.)
Unless one's a reenactor, it's unlikely that anyone will find the patience or interest to read the finely-printed, 400 page artillery manual cover-to-cover. But spot reading it is an education in artillery battlefield movements. The final 120 pages, devoted to illustrating drill movements, cannon anatomy, projectile packing, and musical scores for bugle calls, are interesting and useful for the Civil War enthusiast who (like me) is vague on artillery.

This book also covers a range of related topics which I haven't needed as yet, e.g. physiology, control, and special methodologies for rearing, but which look interesting.

It is a 1998 book so probably time for a new edition.....but really how much has changed? The core info is still the same.
I recommend it for residents/registrars,and also for consultants wanting an approachable comprehensive text.
It is very well written and illustrated.

Great loo bookReview Date: 2001-12-27
These constitute the cutting edge of modern limericks from some of the best (or worst, depending whether you like puns etc) wordsmiths in the business. This is the ideal book to set beside your loo.

As we progress through the chapters, we discover the various aspects involved in developing our own relationship with our Creator. It is an eye opening experience.
Upon completion of his explaination of the variuos stages, he proceeds to correlate prayer with personal descernmnet, then deals with issues of communal discernment and finally death and ressurection.
At each of the stages there are explainations, which can be applied to our own prayer lives.
Father Barry assists us as we learn more about the centralitly of God in our prayer and how it applies to our lives.
A Helpful Introduction to Ignatian DiscernmentReview Date: 2006-01-14
PAYING ATTENTION TO GOD is a readable book that is a wonderful introduction for a person who wishes to take prayer more seriously and is looking for insight into God's will. It has the potential to lead a person to deeper prayer and helps people see the ways in which God's works in our lives and in the world on a continual basis.
