Having just examined George MacDonald's Diary of and Old Soul alongside Betty Aberlin's White Page Poems, I feel confident to recommend it to any MacDonald fan as well as to any lover of higher poetry in general. The White Page Poems seem to be named after MacDonald's original design of his 1880 text, which kept the opposite page blank so that a reader may pen his or her meditations in reaction to each facing poem. Aberlin has taken MacDonald's advice and, like MacDonald, has opened her heart to the world. However, my purpose for writing this review is not to detail MacDonald's and Aberlin's skills as a poet, for there are several well-written reviews on this page which offer good light on the quality of these poems, but to briefly detail the quality of the physical condition of the text.

Zossima Press has produced an excellent product. Although I usually try to avoid paperback books when possible, this paperback book is well-made. The binding is tight and yet I am able to open the text wide without the fear of the spine cracking down the center. Likewise, the pages themselves are well-fastened to the spine and do not appear weak in any way. Nor is the paper of a grainy quality, which provides me the assurance that they will last many years to come. In other words, I am impressed.

I hope that my review has been helpful for you - Happy Shopping!

Hats off to Zossima Press for making this remarkable volume available. Printed on one side of the page are the 366 7-line poems written by influential author and poet George MacDonald and first published in 1880. He meant for these daily meditations to inspire a response in readers, and in this volume, we have the privilege of reading contemporary poet Betty K. Aberlin's replies on the other side of each page, also in the form of 7-line poems. Her poems are a fitting counterpoint to MacDonald's, and they bear witness to the timelessness of the natural and spiritual subjects on which he focused. Helpful endnotes round out this thought-provoking volume of intensely introspective and inspiring poems.

Betty Aberlin's poems touch on so many aspects of life based on her own experiences. In responding to George McDonalds words, she makes you feel what she feels and see what she sees! Which is why I enjoy reading the poems. She honestly reveals herself. In responding to George McDonalds poems, she took on a difficult, courageous task. How does one even begin to do that? Some how Betty found a way and poured her heart and soul into the poems.

What a blessing to have discovered this book ! The poetry is placing such a desire in my own heart to begin creating my own poems. With highlighter in hand, I read through the first two months of their writings. On almost every page I marked lines that spoke to my heart from the 1800s or from writer Betty Aberlin.

I highly recommend this book. The poetry of George MacDonald and Betty Aberlin seem to awaken creative imagination. I am looking forward to reading their poetry, meditating on their thoughts, and then putting my own thoughts into verse.

This is how to engage literature!

As publisher Robert Trexler notes in the introduction, "in the 1880 book the pages opposite the poems were intentionally left blank. MacDonald wrote a 'Dedication' encouraging his readers to write their own thoughts on the empty 'white page.'"
But if you're like me, you're often left wondering exactly how to interact with great, life-changing literature. Or you're often inclined to let your eyes scan the page, taking in the story or the lines of poetry, without ever letting it sink in deep. So Zossima gives us both an example of how to interact with great literature and a way to gain a deeper reading of MacDonald's poetry by putting in the "white space" the world of Betty K. Aberlin, who responds to each of MacDonald's 366 7-line stanzas with poetry of her own. This is the kind of hard soul-work that'll change a person, moving literature from the realm of mere academic analysis into the realm of real life. I highly recommend Zossima's version of The Diary of an Old Soul with The White Page Poems. As it's only two 7-line stanzas per day, I may make this one a yearly read.

What a great addition to my collection of WHITE HOUSE books and memorabilia. This well-written, well-researched and beautifully photographed book gives the detail that is sometimes missing in the more general WHITE HOUSE history or antecdotal writings. It is a good "stand alone" and would be a great "living room" collection book in any case, but for those who enjoy the rich history of D.C. this is a jewel. I recommend it.

This is a beautiful book with exquisite layout and photographs. However, the title gives the impression that we will find information on the First Families, which certainly is not so. It is a very good coffee table book on interior design, design, furnishings, architecture, etc. but since I expected photos and information on people, I was somewhat dissappointed with its contents. But it is a work of art.

Once again Betty Monkman has given us WHITE HOUSE FANS a magnificant chronicle! What a glorious, beautiful absolutely stunning work of art! Betty has included everything in this piece! Bruce White's photography cannot be topped! Looking at the old photos of days gone by and then seeing the "latest versions" of those historic rooms is truly a treat! The details on the historic furntiure, art pieces, glassware, china and more within those walls is fascinating! During this - the 200th Anniversary year of the White House getting it's first occupants, this book is really a treasure and a great addition to anyone's library to help mark this historic anniversary! I thought I knew a lot about the White House - once again Betty Monkman has taught me more! Thanks Betty! :-)

The White House is just an amazing facility, it's a museum, the President's Residence, and the embodiment of the Executive Branch. This book is exhaustively researched, and the photographs are well done. Though it is really not a history of the first families, the book really consentrates on furnishings, and the changes made to the structure over the centuries. The White House serves so many duties and thanks to Jackie O, the historic furnishing have returned and subsequent first ladies and curators have continued her pursuit of historic period furnishings. This book does a wonderful job of highlighting the best of the White House Collection. If you like books of this sort then you will enjoy this book dedicated to one of the iconic symbols of democracy.

Betty Monkman, the White House Curator and photographer Bruce White (from the Metropolitan Museum of Art) have collaborated to create an invaluable text on the history of the furnishings of The White House. Wonderful stories lie within...most famously, the story behind the Resolute Desk, the desk used by Presidents Kennedy, Carter, George H. Bush, Bill Clinton, and now President George W. Bush in their respective Oval Offices.

On June 1st at 6PM, Ms. Monkman will deliver a lecture on The White House as part of exhibition presented by the John F. Kennedy Library and The Metropolitan Museum "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years-Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum". The exhibit will begin May 1, 2001 until July 29, 2001. This will be a great opportunity for one to hear Ms. Monkman's expertise in person. Go to the lecture and buy the book!

This and White's follow-up books Across the Unkwown and the Unobstructed Universe are extremely objective yet cover the deepest levels we can ever hope to understand. Written so that even a beginner can follow yet amazingly profound. I'd also consider it the best self-help book around, as the importance and long-term signifigance of even our smallest acts is stressed throughout. These books focus on YOU and a METHOD OF LIVING, and don't even discuss reincarnation, etc. They focus on the most important issues.

Stewart Edward White recorded information from his medium wife Betty until her death and then purportedly continued to receive such information from her thereafter. At least he isn't claiming it's from God like Neale Walsch! My review of Walsch's "Conversations with God" are appropos here as well. BUT...the words of this book resonate far better. Furthermore, White followed it up with one of the great classics of metaphysics, "The Unobstructed Universe." The "Betty Book" is a fine (almost necessary) introduction to "The Unobstructed Universe." The world view presented in these works (wherever they actually came from) is profound, logical, and fills in many a void in other metaphysical systems. So, if you are turned off by the stated source, just ignore it and read on. Frankly, almost all the books I read are replete with the author's personality, predispositions, assumptions, etc.--it's hard to read between the lines and to separate the wheat from the chaff. In this book, however, that only applies to the source. The material (and, especially in the following volume) is first rate. White also wrote 5 or 6 additional spiritual works which are lesser lights but worth reading. Be aware, however, that he was a professional writer of Westerns. The other spiritual books of his I've read are: "Anchors to Windward," "The Job of Living," "The Road I Know," "The Stars Are Still There," and "With Folded Wings."

Wow! so incredible the articles/information are. I didn't realize how many pages the book contained (i didn't read the descriptions). I was trying to find children's books, and got more than what I asked for, which is great. I was able to donate it to the library at my duty station in Japan, of which they absolutely loved. There weren't many adult versions of Native American books that were in good condition; and by them receiving this book was a wonderful gift.

Wonderful art, fascinating text.

This book has one over-riding theme repeated constantly: The White Man is always wrong and the Indian is and has always been an innocent victem. I won't list details, but the lack of objectivity and obvious implications to the promote the theme are insulting. Although the book may contain some valuable and useful facts about Native Americans and their lifestyles, it is impossible to determine how authentic any of them are due to the overt propaganda that is being constantly asserted.

A beautiful book that pleases the mind and eyes. Very authoritative and full of historical and anecdotal information relating to the Native Americans. Begins with pre-Columbus and continues through the ages to the 90's. A must read for anyone interested in Native american culture and history. The photographs and illustrations are priceless and well worth the price of the book. Add this to your history collection, younsters enjoy browsing at the wonderful prints of paintings and illustrations. An easy read whose pictures entertain and captivate the imagination.

Now, through the magic of Lulu Press, this book is available on Amazon.com. The book is full of several years worth of research that I performed and includes the following contents:

* Full Episode Guide
* Actor and Actress Film/Television Biographies
* Trivia with Answers
* Character Descriptions
* Continuity and "Goofs" Guide
* Write-ups on The Golden Girls Spin-off Shows
* Guest Star Information
* DVD Information

This book is full of information for the funniest show of all time. You will not be disappointed. Great for you or that special Golden Girls fan in your life. Makes a great gift.

Thanks to all who have already purchased this item. I feel this new and redesigned book is better than any other Golden Girls reference out there.

This is the only viewing guide on The Golden Girls, which of course puts it miles ahead of anything else--there is nothing else! The core of the book is good. Episode guides for each episode, and information on the air dates, guest stars, etc. The synopsis are, at times, too succinct, but it's an efficient book.

Now, this is where it gets bad: This is a published-on-demand book, and appears to have original been self-published. It's evident in that there are so many typos, inconsistencies in spelling, missing or incorrect punctuation, and layout inconsistencies that it's a very, very, VERY difficult book to sit down and read. Also, the section of the book that deals purely with the storyline inconsistences of the show is woefully lacking.

The book could benefit immensely from someone with a good editing pencil.

The Classic Guide to BC Paddling
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-02
While this book is now somewhat dated (published in 1986) and out of print, it still remains the classic guide to whitewater paddling opportunities in Southwestern British Columbia. This book does not describe the dozens of "new-school" runs that have been discovered over the last decade and some of the drops mentioned as unrunnable are now routinely paddled. For that reason, this book is no longer considered comprehensive and you won't find any mention of well-known runs such as the Stein, Ashlu Creek, Homathko, or the dozens of other world-class creek runs in the Whistler area and Fraser Valley. This book is however a comprehensive guide to the classic runs that were originally pioneered in long fiberglass boats. It's long past time for a new guidebook to take this one's place but for nearly two decades this has been the best available. The rivers described are all great runs that are still enjoyed today.

Consider this book a starting place to explore the wonderful rivers of BC. For intermediate paddlers or anyone looking for fun play runs this book likely covers most of the rivers you'll be interested in. If you are a creek boater on a road trip to experience the best BC has to offer you won't find much in this guide. The guide covers 38 different runs along with the world-famous tidal rapid at Skookumchuck. These include runs on the following rivers: Capilano, Seymour, Coquitlam, Kanaka, Elaho-Squamish, Cheakamus, Birkenhead, Lillooet, Chilliwack, Chehalis, Cogburn, Big Creek, Silver Creek, Coquihalla, Similkameen, Tulameen, Mission Creek, Shuswap, Seymour, Adams, Clearwater, North Barriere, Bridge, Cayoosh Creek, Nicola, Thompson, Nahatlatch. While the book is old, the river maps are excellent and as long as you can calibrate your frame of reference appropriately the guide will give you a good idea of what each river is like.

Is Schultze is more concerned with $$ than with the truth?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-05
A few months ago, I saw this case on "48 Hours." It interested me because I had knowledge about this situation that was not in the program, so I bought the book. Not surprisingly, Schultze is even more biased in the book than he was on the program.

Betty: "He [Jack] insisted upon my having affairs." That statement is so outrageous that it is laughable.

Betty said that she had rather face execution in the Electric Chair rather than be locked up for life. I find that comical because if she is being honest, she should kill herself. She didn't. Yes, this is yet another outrageous lie by Betty.

Betty is a patholical liar.

Schultze either "bought into" her lies or isn't being honest in the book. When you buy it, do some independent research. Don't be fooled by Shultze's incredible lack of even basic legal concepts, and don't be fooled by his bias. He doesn't tell the entire story.

Lord, they were tried by 2 different juries. Betty's sister wasn't sleeping with whomever she met that day. The defendants were different in many ways. It was Betty's husband that she had killed, not her sister's husband. The trial of Betty's sister and the trial of Betty are two completely different events. Schultze seemingly cannot understand that basic concept.

Or, can he?

I bet his book sold more copies the way he wrote it rather than it would if he had done his research and reported the truth as unbiased as possible.

Could it be that Schultze is more concerned with $$ than with the truth?

You decide. I already have.

Riveting True-Life Tragedy!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-24
Author Jim Schutze has written some terrific non-fiction books in the past but this is his best one! Unlike most true-crime books, this one uncovers a judicial travesty where one twin sister was sent to prison for life and the other one acquitted for a crime they didn't commit. The first twin to be tried, Betty Wilson, was a controverial figure,in that she lived a life of luxury, had numerous affairs, some with black men, and cussed a lot. These traits were instrumental in paving her way into prison for the horrific beating death of her husband, a wealthy dentist. She was convincted on the incredible testimony of a known psychotic and drug addict,James White, with a rap sheet a mile long. He was given a written contract by the district attorney, that assured him of avoiding the electric chair if he would testify that the twin sisters were behind the murder of the dentist. Betty was painted as a promiscuous, alcoholic "slut" in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama courtroom and this is basically what sealed her fate. Her twin sister, Peggy, whose case was tried in Montgomery, Alabama, was acquitted on the basis of the identical testimony that doomed her sister. This time around, her lawyers pointed out the bizarre lies told by the killer who, by the way, was sent to a dentist to have his teeth capped for his trial appearance. In the jailhouse, he was awarded the status of mascot while he smirked and grinned at the imprisoned Betty. The author says frankly that he considered the twin sisters to be guilty of something when he first started covering the courtro testimony. But he said he gradually became outraged that the district attorney used a known psychopathic criminal to railroad the twin sisters into prison. The fact that it was election year and the DA wanted a high profile case to impress the voters for his re-election, contributed to this travesty. Betty Wilson is now serving life sentence without a chance of parole in the Tutwiler Prison in Alabama. Her twiwn sister, Peggy, is still working with attorneys to have her case appealed. In the meantime, the real killer, James White, is free after savagely murdering a man. The state of Alabama has been good to him for his crime.

Shocking Injustice

Review Date: 2005-08-14
I should be surprised, but am not, by two so-called reviews of the book. What they present are not reviews but personal opinions. This is largely what the book lays out as a reason for the conviction of Betty Wilson. This woman was not convicted on any evidence or fact but on the testimony of a proven liar, schizophrenic, alcoholic, drug-addicted man that turned on his own men in Vietnam. Whether people agree or disagree with the verdict, people are supposed to be convicted on fact and not opinion. This book is eye opening and needs to be read by those possessing skills of discernment and reason. One can only hope that justice will prevail in the end although it appears that will not happen in this case.

This book is full of various trivia questions about the Golden Girls, but unless I missed something, I could not find anywhere in the book where the answers were listed. I had bought this for a friend, but she would have gone crazy not knowing the correct answers. Plus, the cover is just really cheesy-you can hardly read the title because of how the color conflicts with the background, the cheesecake is on fancy shmancy plates (which the Golden Girls never used), and there are little cups of tea (which the Golden Girls never drank). Don't bother with this product-I sent it back.
