My most memorable readReview Date: 2000-07-05
The courage, humour, resourcefulness and sheer mental tenacity displayed by this group of women astounded me - even as a 12 year old. I seemed to bond with them. I wept when prisoners were abused or died and laughed myself silly when they pulled funny pranks on their loathesome Japanese guards.
I am an avid reader but there has never been another book which has left such an impression on me. As a high school student of English, I chose "White Coolies" as a book review assignment. I remember scoring very highly.
I am keen to obtain a copy of White Coolies, particularly as one of the wonderful women featured in it, Vivien Statham (Bullwinkel) passed away in Perth, Western Australia, this week.

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle uses reverse psychology to change children's bad habits. Of course the situations are exaggerated, but they are funny and the children in the book are encouraged to be pleasant, responsive, responsible people. The parents are funny, too -- the dads are absorbed in work and lesiure pursuits, the moms hyperventilate and call one another about their little ones' character flaws. But Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, who wants everyone to be their best, has clever solutions.
My kids related the best to the Selfishness Cure -- they could really imagine locking all their things away in a hoard. In the end, they "got it" that selfishness is wrong, even though it took quite a bit of ridicule and very obvious peer pressure to change the character of the child in the story.
At the end of every chapter, it's almost a teachable moment for me to share why I'm so proud of my children -- for example, what they have willingly and cheerfully done, and why that makes me so proud. It sinks in very deeply after we have all been laughing together and enjoying one another.
I would give it four-and-a-half stars, but that's not an option. I'd hold half a star back because it is so OBVIOUS... but who am I kidding? I am raising Children of Oblivion, who wander around with garments inside-out or backwards half the time. If it isn't OBVIOUS, they are going to miss it. I'm going to go looking for a Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle that addresses tattling and interrupting. There are four or five books in the series -- I'll be putting them on my wish list.

Don't want to eat, bathe, go to bed or comb your hair? Review Date: 2008-01-06
The characters are so wonderful and the stories so creatively written that children will be spellbound by these books. Even non-readers will be captivated.
Wonderful reading!

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's MagicReview Date: 2006-03-11

Funny, but not as good as othersReview Date: 2008-11-11
While admittedly ridiculous and full of good, memorable scenes, this book is not up to the same level as "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle" or "Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Farm". In those books, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle uses a love and understanding of children, plus reverse psychology, to bring about changed behaviors. No magic dust. Love, patience, and understanding.
My favorite cure in this book was the bullying cure: substituting leadership for bullying. But I think it's better to do it without the pills.
A Classic ReadReview Date: 2008-11-03
Hilary Knight's ink sketch illustrations depict hilarious scenes such as Melody Foxglove drowning in her own tears, Jimmy Gopher bullying Priscilla Wick, and Harbin Quadrangle slowpoking his way out of bed. The illustrations are just ridiculous enough to compliment the entertaining stories, while remaining realistic enough to flatter the moral of each tale.
In this, the second collection of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle stories, Betty MacDonald once again uses her creative writing to teach children that it isn't nice to whisper, bully, or show off. Just as relevant over half-a-century since it's first publication, children everywhere will relate to at least one of the many interesting characters, and delight in the magical cures doled out. Perhaps the lure of leadership pills, whisper sticks, or crybaby tonic will have a troublemaker you know searching for the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle in your neighborhood.

What also strikes me about these stories is that they are all about children who might now be regarded as having psychological or socialization problems; some of them today might even be treated with drugs. In these stories, all of the children are being drugged by their parents, surreptitiously, and they come to enjoy the happy side effects of the various pills, powders and sprays they are subjected to. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, some fifties years later, reads like a neighborhood drug dealer!
My elementary-school aged daughter, however, says that I'm reading far too much into the book. She appreciates the stories for their humor and for their verisimilitude, albeit with exaggerated effects. There is something of Roald Dahl here; I think of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (better known through the movies as WILLY WONKA), with its quasi-morality tale of bratty kids and their just comeuppances. My daughter, hearing this, would tell me to get off my high horse, relax and just enjoy the stories.

Very Well OrganizedReview Date: 2008-03-17
The book does a great job at explaining the divisions within the movement. We see the structures of the skin heads, kkk, kkkk, Christian identity and other influentual white groups in America. The book discusses the movements leaders and interaction with other seperatist groups and racial groups. I was shocked to see how much selfishness, ego's and fanatical religious beliefs have stopped the movement from reaching its full potential. It would seem members themselves more than the government have stunted its growth.
I was very cautious in the beginning because the authors seemed like they were advocates for the movements and had subtle sympathy. This made me a little cautious because they clamed to not have a bias opinion from the start, but this relative tension only lasted the first couple of chapters. Other then that it was a pretty good read.

The White Separatist Movement in the United StatesReview Date: 2002-08-05
This is a well researched book. These ladies spent a lot of money and time traveling America to talk to many people in the movement. They did not just rehash some old ADL reports like most reporters do, and the book is proof of their hard work. This is a fresh look at the movement through the eyes of two Left wing Eggheads. To show you how far to the Left they are, in the back of the book they called the super liberal rag The New Republic a right wing publication. I got a real kick out of that.
This is a great book for an overview of the race movement in America. A lot of good info and most of it is correct, at least from their worldview of us.
These ladies interviewed me last summer for a book on Odinism they are planning to write. I don't know what they're going to call it. Also, a man named Mardell is coming out with a book on Asatru called the Gods of Blood. Which will be coming out soon.
