Well written book about an often neglected area in our history, the Reuther family and the emergence of the UAW as a factor in the economic, social and political life of America. For anyone interested in a primer of American labor unions, this is a great start concerning the rise of Americas middle class.

When I took osteology, we relied heavily on White's Human Osteology and were frustrated by the less than wonderful photographs and text. I came across this book a year later and wished so much that I'd had it earlier! The photographs are much larger and better marked (with letters and numbers overlying features, rather than marked off to the side with ambiguos arrows). There is little text, but it isn't needed! The photographs and labels tell you everything you need to know. Every foramen is listed with what passes through it. The sections include: articulated skull, disarticulated bones of the crania and face, muscle attachments, anthropological landmarks, and radiological landmarks. The appendices include articulations, classifications, foramina and ossification centers for each bone. It's truly wonderful!

Retired and wanting something to pass the time with I started on fly fishing and tying. This book has the handy pictures to give first some basic instructions and then seven patterns that will get you to tying others like them. Now I do up my own patterns using the lessons lerned from this book. I haven't used any other books on starting off, but I am satisfied that this one does the job and a good job at that.

I just bought this book last week. I've been real interested in this story since it happened 6 years ago. I feel sorry for poor John-wayne though. A lesson learned is, don't abuse your spouse, AND maybe it'd help to do the d*** dishes (even though I've always HATED dishes)!

True insight into the Upper Peninsula
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-06
This book, originally written in 1944, is a true insight into the life of natives of the Upper Peninsula. Martin wrote these stories based on real interviews with the characters of this wild and untamed land. And through the stories one gets a unique perspective on not only the depth with which folks loved this place, but also the various ways in which this land was exploited for its timber, iron ore, and copper. It was in many ways the treasures that this land held that shaped its evolution. And after these treasures were depleted, the true value of the Upper Peninsula was discovered: its pristine and unchanged beauty, and its unique ecosystem, wildlife, and human inhabitants. Folks who stayed and never left, and folks who came and never left, all recognized what a sanctuary existed here. Somehow time has not yet changed the majority of this wonderful place called North Country.

A Forgotten History
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-09
This book is the only book I know about a long forgotten part of both American and Church history.
The Anglican church played a significant role in the developement of this country. For too long Purtian New England with it's Pilgrims and dissenters has held sway over the religious history of the English colonies in North America.
Anglicans had a tremendous influence in the colonies where they were the established church.
Dr.Woolverton has done extensive research examining every aspect of the church's role both in the official and unofficial life of the colonies. It is a great shame this book has gone out of print. It is a must read for any student of the colonial period or anyone concerned with the history of the church in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Must Read Automotive History
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-23
This book is truly a must-read gem. It is the first academic book about the Dodge Brothers. Though it has many in-depth footnotes the book is absolutely readable and tells a nice story all in around 200 pages. It is perfect for the professor of history or the person just curious about Detroit or automotive history. The book is also full of great photos: images showing the brothers, their families, the cars and the plants where they were built.

I, who know a lot about the Dodge Brothers and the Dodge Families, was surprised at what I did not know and what I learned from this book. Mr. Hyde puts to rest many rumors and brings to light much new information which is important to the history of car manufacturing in Detroit. Most importantly he shows how the Dodge Brothers supplied Ford with engines and all the mechanical parts for his first `Ford' cars. Without the Dodges there would probably have never been a successful Ford. Then the Brothers turned to making their own car. Built with honesty and care the firm's cars became known as a solid and dependable. They were true innovators. When they both died in 1920 the company was on top of the world. A few years later the widow's of the Brothers sold the company for $146 million. And again a few years later it was sold again to Walter Chrysler, and is still today an important part of DaimlerChrysler

The Dodge Brothers were an amazing team and built an amazing company from sheer hard work and honesty, the true American Dream! It is surprising that it took so long for someone to write about them.

Duke: A Love Story
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-15
DUKE: A LOVE STORY is a stunning, deeply moving book: the warm, funny, tender, and finally, tragic story of the last years of one of America's most beloved men -- by the woman he loved.
John Wayne and Pat Stacy were together for seven years. For all those years she was his secretary and companion; for the last five the woman he loved, openly and with pride, and who loved him back. They shared everything together, alone and with his family and friends, and the Wayne she gives us is very different from the Wayne of legend.

This is "Duke" the man, tender, loving, stubborn, generous, cantankerous, impulsive, humorous, and, finally, full of rage at the cancer he had to battle for the second time in his life; the cancer that, as Stacy cared for him day after day and shared his agony, cut away at the man who had been so vital and strong -- but to which he refused to succumb.

DUKE: A LOVE STORY is a revelation, a book full of joy and sorrow and courage -- the real John Wayne brought to vivid, loving life.

This is a great read. So much insight on a number of things. The stuntman profession, John Wayne, John Ford, Hollywood, Westerns. If you have any interest in any or all of these topics you will really enjoy this book. No wonder they called it the golden age.
