No depth, just a quick photographic scan of the career of John Wayne

If you are a fan of John Wayne and his movies, then this book will interest you. However, if you are interested in some depth about his life, you will have to look elsewhere. There is little more than photos in this book, they are stills from movies, shots during production and a few feature him at award shows or in a casual scene.
All of the pictures capture Wayne's photogenic toughness, even a casual scene seems to exude the strong confidence that was a hallmark of Wayne in his movies.

Too many inaccuracies

While containing many good pictures, the book misses some of the Dukes movies (like "The Cowboys") and contains several inaccuracies (such as trying to pass off the plot to "True Grit" as the plot to "Big Jake" and mislabeling "Rio Bravo" as "El Dorado").

Outdated & Unpractical for professionals and rescuers

I guess this book isn't a bad introduction for someone who is new to first-aid but much like St. John Ambulance courses in Canada, this book is limited in its scope and not much good for professionals or someone spending extented time in the backcountry or a remote setting. As a doctor, I would even go as far as saying that there is incorrect medical information but some of this could be the book and author seem to be out of touch with modern approaches to wilderness medicine and backcountry rescue. Again, this isn't terrible, there are just much better wilderness first aid publications out there: try Medicine for Mountaineering, or one of the Wilderness Medical Associates or NOLS publications.

Best wilderness first aid guide out there

I've been using Wayne Merry's Wilderness First Aid Guide to teach St. John Ambulance Wilderness First Aid courses since 1995. If you only read one wilderness first aid book, this is the one to read.

Published in 1994, the Wilderness First Aid Guide was developed under a grant from the Donner Foundation to create first aid training that would be relevant to remote Northern First Nation and Inuit communities where help is often days away. It remains one of the best Wilderness First Aid publications available today.

It's divided into 4 sections: first response, caring for casualties, wilderness injuries, and wilderness illnesses. There are sections at the end on: improvising first aid supplies, first aid kits, medications, signaling for help, and first aid checklists for documenting a rescue. Each problem is described in context, with many helpful examples and illustrations, and with sections on prevention, recognition of signs and symptoms ("How to tell") and the appropriate first aid ("What to do"). Wayne differentiates between the first aid needed if help is an hour away and first aid if help is days away.

In a wilderness setting, a rescue involves 8 steps. 1. Survey scene, 2. Find/ treat life-threatening problems, 3. Move casualty to shelter (or erect shelter over casualty), 4. Perform secondary survey and document findings/treatment, 5. Make evacuation decision, 6. Signal/send for help, 7. Provide "second aid" (warmth, fluids, food, & waste management), and 8. Move casualty to help.

Most other wilderness first aid books focus on the help needed in the first hour, but are sketchy beyond that. The Official Wilderness First Aid Guide explains the mechanisms/physiology underlying serious wilderness problems like hypothermia, dehydration, and shock in simple language, helping first aiders understand not just what to do but why. The chapter on moving a casualty to shelter details over 14 short distance lifting techniques for 1, 2 or multiple rescuers. The chapter on moving a casualty to help details techniques for stretcher building, carrying, and belaying, and reviews the pros, cons and special considerations of various land (ATV, snowmobile, komatik, dogsled), water (canoe, cabin cruiser) and air (airplane, helicopter) evacuations. There are also comprehensive chapters on second aid (taking care of someone while you wait for help), keeping warm, bear attacks, and abdominal complaints. These are crucial wilderness first aid skills that other manuals cover in a page or two, if they talk about them at all.

Currently, this book is used as a text for the four day wilderness first aid courses offered by St. John Ambulance in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. It has been translated into German, and in Germany you must have a Wilderness First Aid Certificate in order to purchase a Personal Locator Beacon rescue device.

I recommend this book highly to anyone who spends time in the outdoors.

This is the most timely book in all the world, because it tells the truth regarding President Bush's projection for the 2004 general ellection, and the road map to peace in Israel. When this peace treaty is sign in the Middle East, it will be sign for seven years according to the Prophet Daniel.

The Omega Chapter is the only book in all the world that points to our beloved President future plans. Therefore, I rate this book a 5 star or more.

Thank you.

One of the worst [piece of literature] I've ever read. If I knew better, I wouldn't have taken this book for free. What a waste of time.

Granted, not every cd is hilarious, but just the Richard Jeni cd alone is hilarious and wellworth the price. Jeff Wayne cd, also hilarious! For $8.90. you will not go wrong. The Richard Jeni cd alone sells for higher elsewhere. Seller is prompt and items shipped with care. I just ordered a second set for a gift. Enjoy!

I got this collection for $5 and I feel ripped off. You would think that for $5 for 6 CDs would be a great deal but no. This set is so bad that it is tempting to put any of the CDs in on a long drive just for the anticipation that someone in the car will reach over and jerk the wheel into on coming traffic for the sweet relief of death. Even for free you are getting cheated.

"Mistakes," or lack of interest?

Were the police truly interested in catching the murderer of Candy Short? BURIED MISTAKES, the true-crime account of the slaying of an unrenowned small-town girl, asks that crushing, rhetorical question. Ultimately a hard-working detective, coming out of retirement, reviewed the "unsolved" case and proceeded to nab the culprit, the victim's husband. Was it that detective's own family-violence childhood that drove him to catch a wife-beating killer? BURIED MISTAKES author Michael Kaplan seems to ask: Is justice enough cause to motivate us to do the right thing, or must there be a personal stake in the issue?

Lacks depth...

I'm a practicing engineer in Oregon. I have studied and reviewed concrete foundations for 5-6 years, and this book is lacking in quality depth - particularly with examples. If one wants to go into a graduate-level understanding of reinforced concrete design, this book will leave you disappointed due to the lack of example problems, clear and concise descriptions, and overall quality. James MacGregor's book is far more "complete". The plus for this book is that it at least attempts to cover retaining and foundation structures, but still lacks quality example problems to illustrate what is not too obvious within the ACI code. Quantity is a 5 star, quality is a 2 star, therefore I've given this a 3 star review.

The Life and Times Of John Wayne by David Hanna is a pretty good book. I liked this book because it listed all of the movies and shows John Wayne has ever appeared in. I also liked this book because it did a time line of his life and showed all of the obstacles he had to overcome.
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy western shows and movies. I also think farmers, ranchers and cow tenders would enjoy this book.
The book has a section listing quotes, and one of my favorites is,"I'm 53 years old and 6'4,I've had three wives, five children and three grandchildren.I love good whisky.I still don't understand women, and i don't think there is any man who does."

Food for Thought for a study of the Mexican War

Interesting. The first article, though, on Polk's New England tour, was dull and pointless. Wayne Cutler makes his point long before he ends the article. The best article was Miguel Soto's on the Monarchist's conspiracy in Mexico. Soto's work is probably an essential piece to a study on the politics of Mexico during the conflict. John Eisenhower also gives a interesting look into the relationships of Polk, Scott, and Taylor. However, even this article is lacking. Soto's article is the only purely essential piece. The others are just food for thought.

this was a text book for psychology at Baker College in Port Huron in Chonda Stimer's class. I found it to be the correct book. Beyond that, it has a lot of useful contemporary (post 9/11) information that is quite useful. Be sure to get the workbook as well. As a textbook, it is actually a very interesting book and no sleeper, as so many text's tend to be.

What a wonderful story of an American family struggling with the lack of success both personally and professionally and their interaction with someone - Wayne- they feel has achieved the success they strive for. The story had me thinking with each chapter, "what is fact and what is fiction?" A great read of how the success of an American icon such as John Wayne may not have been as great for him as what the American public saw from the seats in a movie theater. Only those who had personal contact could see he suffered the same struggles as the everyday public. The more I read the more I was drawn into the family's struggles and where they were headed. Short, but stated all that was important in life during that period of time.

Loved it

This book was brilliant. A complex, powerful study of an American family and their interaction with each other and with one of America's most indellible icons. I thought the writing was excellant - insightful and concise. A great depiction of inter-family dynamics. Just brilliant.

A book with many layers that is a fine read.

This is a fine book by a fine new writer. A subtle commentary on family, American culture, and the role that celebrity plays in the lives of both the noted one and those around them. I especially liked the spare, honed writing and the pace of the novel. We'll be hearing more from Dan Barden.

Dan Barden is a great writer -- the dialogue flows beautifully. However, the story didn't move me at all. I'm a huge John Wayne fan and I figured: how could I be disappointed?? But I was...BIG TIME. ZZZZzzzzzz
