This is THE book to read about Yankee bowhead whaling in the western arctic. Bockstoce is not only a great scholar, he when whaling with the Point Hope Native hunters in the 1960s (prior to the Marine Mammal Protection Act), and has sailed and boated through most of the western Arctic where Yankee whaling took place.

Colourful & Precise

Comprehensively researched, this book provides a complete history of whaling in Alaska, from its inception to its demise. Whaling was an important part of American history, a unique part that is forever gone, and deserves examination, despite our present sentiments on the subject. Mr. Bockstoce's history is thorough and provides considerable detail, and delves into a wide range of issues, from economic factors to the impact on the Native population. Still, the book is more than history. What makes it fascinating reading are the anecdotes and personal glimpses into the lives of the people who were involved. Whatever else they were, they did not lack for courage and perseverance. It's their stories, funny, strange, gruesome, or just colorful, that make the lost ships and abandoned harbors and history come to life. Overall, an great read for anyone with an interest in a clear and concisely-written history that includes personalities as well as data.

An extremely well organized and interesting history.

This book is the best one I have read about the history of whaling. It gives the reader a perspective that others sometimes do not. It is well illustrated and gives you the feel that you are actually part of the history Mr. Bockstoce is presenting. You understand how and why the Arctic whaling industry thrived and finally met its demise.

I used both editions of Laws's book, Aquatic Pollution, throughout my Master's studies as an introductory text to environmental problems of the hydrosphere. I have found no other book to be equally informative. I recommend it to my undergrad class as a primary reference. The material covered is also suitable for beginning MS students, and the conceptual approach used is quite effective especially for those with no technical science exposure. Easy reading to be supplemented as needed with the more technical books like Stumm and Morgan's Aquatic Chemistry. Very adequate for introductory courses. I'm glad that the 3rd edition is due soon.

I used this book for a college course and not only found it easy to read and understand, but also enjoyable. The author's style of writing is unmatched among science textbook writers. The book covers an overview of all relevent issues in aquatic pollution for both marine and freshwater environments. Each topic is covered with enough detail and background information to provide a clear understanding of the problems within the field of aquatic pollution.

You can not longer build and live so close to the water's edge but these beauties are grandfathered in on beautiful Muskoka and Rousseau, et. al. I thought of my boyhood days on a lake in Northern Minnesota. I remember smaller and less grand boathouses where the sundappled water reflected off the rafters inside. You were really one with the water. This book captures the essence of it all--I could almost smell the water, wood, paint, varnish, canvas, wet rattan and wicker--

My best christmasgift ever.

At the water's edge

Muskokaá Boathouses.

This book gives the reeder a chance of dreaming back to the early yaers of the 20th century and experiance how the riche and famuose people spent there weekends and holidays. If you are intrested in old houses, especially bothouses, and architect designs this book is a must.

This book is my best inspiration ever.

This is simply one of the very best books written about the joy, adventure, contact and contemplation of water. I have dipped into it frequently and recommended it to many. And I have quoted it 8 times (few authors other than Thoreau were quoted more frequently) in my own recent book Deep Immersion: The Experience of Water (nominated for top environmental book of the year). Jerome's prose is wonderful and his stories engaging. He simply loves to get wet and would well understand Thoreau's maxim: "That part of you that is wettest is fullest of life" (quoted in Profitably Soaked: Thoreau's Engagement With Water, Green Frigate Books, 2003).

Once again, Jerome is fantastic.

John Jerome has, in recent years, become one of my favorite writers thanks to his elegant and straightforward prose style. I ordered "Blue Rooms" the moment I heard it was out, and I was not disappointed. This is a terrific book.

"Blue Rooms" is about a lifelong love affair with water. From playing in the muddy San Marcos river as a boy, to kayaking the cold waters of Canadian lakes as a grown man, it seems Jerome has always been fascinated by water. Most of the earth's surface, he points out, is water. So is most of the human body.

What strikes me most about this book is the way in which Jerome takes a personal obsession and makes it understandable to his readers. By the end of the book I could have sworn I had a lifelong love affair with water, too, even though I'm a mediocre swimmer who lives in hills far from any large water source. Really, this is a terrific book. Go out and buy it. You won't be sorry.

Enjoyed reading my friend John's (and fellow writer),book on his African Experiences.

His wife Adeline did a great job too.

A remarkable story of medical experiences in East Africa.

Dr. Hult has written a truly remarkable story of life as a missionary pediatrician in East Africa. His writing is at all times clear and concise. He brings to life an era in this former British colony then called Tanganyika. For those of us who were there, and who recall the people and places he writes about, it's a nostalgic trip into the past. But for those who weren't there, this book paints pictures that portray humor and pathos, successes and failures, adventure and routine, life and death in a primitive African culture. A must-read for everyone interest in missions, African culture, or just the people themselves.

Alternate title: "Appleby at Allington"
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-05
Retired Commissioner of New Scotland Yard, Sir John Appleby has a difficult and delicate task when he investigates various deaths that have taken place on the estate of his new neighbor, Owain Allington. For one thing, he is no longer officially a policeman. Colonel Tommy Pride is the local Chief Constable, and Appleby isn't sure whether he likes him. When he comes face-to-face with Colonel Pride at a church fête on Allington's estate, they bristle at each other distrustfully.

Then Appleby realizes that Colonel Pride is practically his double. They are both elderly men with a military bearing. Both are wearing tweeds and almost identical green trilbys. In fact: "If he and Pride...were to hunch themselves down on each side of a fireplace, the effect would be... that of ...twinned china dogs..."

In later novels, Sir John and Colonel Pride become good friends (see "Appleby's Other Story" (1974)), but in "Death by Water" (1968) they are still wary of each other. Nevertheless, Pride supplies the police power necessary to tow a car and corpse out of their host's ornamental pond, and supplies Appleby with the information he needs to solve a series of mysterious deaths.

One might refer to Colonel Pride as Appleby's Lestrade, even to a bit of bumbling on the Chief Constable's part.

Michael Innes combines many themes that he has used in other Appleby mysteries: buried treasure; mysterious scientists; eccentric rectors; feuding relatives; and just a touch of spy story. Intellectual arrogance, as in many of Innes's novels is the villain's Achilles' heel.

Never, I warn you, never invite Sir John to dinner, to a church fête, or to your sound-and-light show on the castle parapet if murder is to follow.

Michael Innes (John Innes Mackintosh Stewart) was born in Edinburgh, educated at Oxford, and taught English in universities all over the world. His scholarly career includes works on Rudyard Kipling and Thomas Hardy, but he is better known as the creator of Inspector John Appleby, whose exploits inspired a lasting vogue for literary (and literate) mysteries. If you'd like to experience Sir John at his donnish zenith, read "Hamlet, Revenge!" (1937).

Excellent hands on introduction to solar heating

This book provides an excellent means of getting started with a hands on solar water heating project that pays for itself in less than 5 years. John Canivan has a method of bringing solar energy harvesting devices down to earth. He was a science major in college with a background in teaching, but most of his life has worked as a general contractor. I believe the best way to explain how something works is to do it yourself. The step by step procedures are nice guidelines but John goes beyond this. Once you understand the principles of solar heat gain, heat exchange and heat storage you'll be designing your own solar home with basic inexpensive construction materials and asking John for more information about his solar thermal roof system :-) All John's books are great, but this is the best one to get started with... and don't forget about the free CD-ROM multimedia show that comes with every book...

A major obstacle in the way of solar acceptance is cost. Istalled PV systems take more than a generation to pay for themselves. Professionally installed solar hot water systems have a shorter payback period, but not short enough for most people. If you're a do it yourselfer with basic carpentry and plumbing skills you could build and install your own cold climate SHW system that could pay for itself in less than 5 years. How to Build a Solar Hot Water System explains the basics of heat transfer in plain language with step by step procedures to facilitate the process of building your own cost effective solar hot water system.

When I was a small boy growing up in the slums of Lesotho, I lived under the assumption that I would follow my father and work in the mines in South Africa. It was what our family had always done, and I would continue the tradition. If you had told me back then that I would grow up to invest in wastewater treatment, I would have said "Who are you? You're crazy! Get out out of my custard!" because you would have been standing in my custard. But I would have been wrong. After I ran away from home to Copenhagen, an old friend contacted me because he had heard I was broke. He gave me this book. Marino and Boland changed my life. I went from a scared little Besotho runaway to a plump and powerful player in just one year of investing smartly in wastewater treatment. If it hadn't been for this book, I might of had to resort to selling off my body parts for food money. Thank you Marino and Boland. I love you. I will do anything you want. You can have all my money. You can live in my house. You can have my firstborn child. I thank you.

It is soooo righteous! All of these photos of HIS HOME, his crazy crazy collection of weird vintage stuff. His porn, his literature, his knicknacks (his house is full of glass food!). It's just fabulous. Get it now.

If you DON'T know who John Waters is... but you like interesting voyeuristic ventures into a complete strangers interesting, flamboyant, original, awesome private home... then you too will dig this excellent bit of media. ;>
