Very Good Read

This is a story about a girl who chooses to explore her families history to learn about her mother's death. The narrative goes back and forth between Cassie, the main character, and her grandmother, giving the reader insight on what really happened. What affected me the most is how a lie can truly change a life forever.

Two Moons--A book with symbolism to blow your mind
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-02
Two Moons is an excellent novel. Its use of symbolism throughout the novel is amazing. The book has a strong theme of guilt between all the characters and also has a small focus on old age and the preparation of death. It is a good read, not a long read and very poetic and a fantastic ending.

Very good, gets a little technical towards the end
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-24
The first three-quarters+ of the book is excellent. It provides a good overview of Venetian history and explains how/why the city is essentially sinking. The author then gets into a TREMENDOUS amount of depth (no pun intended) concerning funding for a proposed gate project, various changes of Italian government, etc.-- probably more than you need to know, certainly more than I needed. Overall, though, the book was very good, even for someone who knows Venice as well as I do.

Very Nice Reproductions of Sargent Watercolors
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-15
Eight approximately 8 by 11 inch image size reproductions of post 1900 watercolors by Sargent. In a glossy portfolio / envelope with images and a slight text to explain Sargent and these eight watercolors.
Photo reproduction decent to good. (I've never seen anything remotely rivalling the originals.) Published by the Brooklyn Museum, owner of the originals and by Pomegranate Publications. Pomegranate has done very nice art production for quite a few years. Lovely stuff, in fact.
A small set of such prints could be nicely displayed on either wall or desk. Simply place a print in an inexpensive frame (e.g. clear plastic) with an easily accessible print pocket. When you feel like it, rotate one of the other seven into the frame to suit your fancy. A nice and reasonably priced way to enjoy Sargents.
Glad I bought it.
PS What was Sargent thinking when he did the bits of sky in "Bridge of Sighs"?! At the top, the sky looks a mauve overcast with a nice cloud suggestion via a deliberate bloom? But, below the bridge the sky looks clear and bright cerulean? Well, Sargent could get away with it, I guess.

Great Book for Dealing With NPS Pollution
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-26
This is a great book for dealing with Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution. It covers a fairly comprehensive list of topics, while not going into great depth on most. It gives you enough information to get a good start on just about ANY analysis related to NPS pollution and a solid beginning to expand your research from if more in-depth analysis is required. In my opinion, this is a great reference for anyone working in water quality, and a "must-have" for working with NPS.

Mysteriously Captivating

I got this without knowing anything about BoohBahs, and it squeezed out all my 2-year-old's former favorite books for quite awhile (she's back with some of her old faves again now, after several weeks of nonstop Boohbah). She has certain pages that are her favorites and she goes straight to them and then stares at them for the longest time. She's mysteriously captivated. I give this only 4 stars, not 5, because I'm not really sure what is going on in her mind and whether it's good for her. She is too little to explain to me why she is so tranfixed by this book. However, it sure makes for peaceful bedtimes!

A teaching workbook with usable applications
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-06
Finally, here is a workbook on a complex subject with usable introductory software on a CD ROM. The workbook takes one through the necessary steps to set up a water body problem. After doing this, I felt confident enough to try a real water body application. For the latter it would have been useful to have a listing of some common data base sources. With the application set up I kept trying more and more complex problem including the complete water quality modeling.

There are some limitations as with any workbook. It would have been useful if the different water quality model input parameter tables were discussed at the beginning of their application chapters. Also, it would have been useful if there was a more extensive GUI, however, having all the input data in a simple tabular format is still useful.

The feature of putting the set-up and applications up front with the theory chapters at the end, rather than mixing them together is very helpful.

I will be recommending that this workbook be used in a senior level environmental sciences course for which I am trying to get more of a quantitative underpinning.

A little too academic for me.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.

The author is an historian and proud of it. I was reading this to get a better feel for the history of the "Rape of the Owens Valley" by the L.A. water wizards. I got the history I was looking for, but it was packaged in a form that made it harder to digest. The author was much too concerned with showing off his vocabulary and "dissing" other historians' views. He cleary had his own academic agenda and it got in the way of communicating. Still, the book gave me what I was looking for and it was worth the read.

Excellent case studies
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-28
The book is overall very inclusive and addresses a broad range of topics necessary in environmental application of GIS. The only weakness for student use would be in fundamentals of the science and need for more definition of terms and practices. This is one of the few good compilations of actual GIS use.
