I like it

This book does a good job of discussing why groundwater extraction (pump and treat or whatever else you want to call it) is not useful for cleanup of petroleum contaminated sites, rendering it best suited for hydraulic control of plumes.

The author also has a pretty good discussion regarding lifecycle design considerations and the various steps to go through/questions to ask with regard to effluent treatment and equipment sizing.

Some of the technology descriptions appears to be taken from design of remediation systems by suthersan, but both books were published by the same company so i guess that shouldn't really be a surprise. Both books offer different perspectives, so I find them both to be pretty useful, however, I like this one a little more because the author seems to be more of a practical guy whereas suthersan is more theoretical.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of the design and correct application of remediation technologies.

Aside from a small section, which tells children that, it's safe to touch and pick up some jellyfish the book is well written. A lot of information is given about different species and it is easy enough for small children to understand.

A wonderful pictorial of the windjammer's life! The black and white pictures show the beauty and the harshness of life aboard a tall ship, in great detail. The large size of the book is needed and appropriate for the photographs. Each photo is accompanied with an excerpt of Alan Villiers writing. Though not written for the pictures, the editors did an excellent job associating snippets of Villiers' writing with his photos. This is an excellent book to linger over on those rainy days that keep you from being out on the water, sailing yourself.

Spare me the Dagliesh-types

I think this is an excellent first book. The descriptions of the farming community are fresh and first-rate. I also like the fact that Agent Sir is a rookie. Too many protagonists in modern crime procedurals are sensitive, slick, omniscient Dagliesh-types. (Let's face it...there's only one P.D. James!) Cheers to Mr. Waters and here's hoping he puts out another book soon!

Interesting concept
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-07
This book is exactly what the title says -- first works by 362 different artists. The artists were asked to submit what they considered their first work, so isn't always the first piece they displayed, but instead, what they considered an important piece in their career or something else like that.

Regardless, it's an interesting concept that provides a brief glimpse of many artists whom you probably haven't heard of before. The works span several decades and also span media: there are paintings, photos, film, sculpture, mized media, etc. Each entry is one or two pages, with commentary by the respective artist that can range from a couple sentences to a full page.

One thing to note -- the Amazon description is misleading. The authors are not the 5 artists listed; they are just five of the 362 whose works are included.

A very good introduction to this topic
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-12
A few years ago I came across a magazine article that discussed the importance of the Ogallala Aquifer to American agriculture, geography, and society. Realizing that I knew absolutely nothing about this topic I picked up John Opie's book. It's safe to say that I now know more about the Ogallala Aquifer than I could ever have imagined possible.

The book begins with a discussion of the geology of the aquifer, and then moves into the history of irrigation efforts on the Plains since the 19th century, and finally to a discussion of the various irrigation technologies currently used to exploit the aquifer. There is ample discussion along the way about how these technologies have changed over the years as environmental consciousness and the problems of declining aquifer levels have become more prevalent.

This book is not only a very informative look at the Ogallala Aquifer but is pleasantly readable as well. And now that it is (finally) available in a more affordable paperback edition, I'm going to go buy a copy for myself.
