The Guide to Maine Flatwater.
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-26
This book is an absolute neccessity for anyone planning to do extensive flatwater paddling in Maine. The book divides maine into regions and then gives detailed descriptions of the most choice paddling spots in those regions. Each overall description entails a map of the lake, general decription of the lake (scenery, fish species, things to look for etc.), campsite reservation numbers if neccesary, and most important DETAILED DIRECTIONS. Unless you are confining your paddling to the southern region, most of the lakes will require driving on winding dirt logging roads that can confuse even the most seasoned forester(I know I was one). However with this book, I was able to find the put in with ease every time. Happy Paddling!

The Kuchar Brothers - Truly Independent American Filmmakers
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-29
This book became a filmmaking Bible for me. The Kuchar Brothers make movies for very little money using a whole lot of their souls in lieu of pecuniary advancements. Their movies are intensely personal, funny and brilliant and they've been making 'em since they were preteens using their aunt's 8mm (well before Super 8) camera inspired by the melodramas of Douglas Sirk as well as any piece of cinema they could devour.

This book gives a little taste of what's behind it all and it's a lot like the Brothers' movies - funny, moving, and whimsical with their own personal dreams, obsessions and demons as fuel. If you're a fan of the Kuchars you'll love this book. If you've never heard of them the book will serve as a timely introduction to their vast ouevre containing unforgettable titles like Sins of the Fleshapoids, Hold Me While I'm Naked and the Wet Destruction of the Atlantic Empire. Whether you know them or not, you will find this book invaluable. Mike's chapter entitled the Metaphysics of moviemaking is one of the greatest pieces I've ever read about making movies.

Even though they're not household names like many of the people they've inspired (Andy Warhol, John Waters, David Lynch), the Kuchar Brothers continue to make movies their own way. Though not as famous as some of their contemporaries, their contribution to American cinema is just as grand. That's why you should read this book...

If you're looking at this review, chances are you're interested in the books in question not so much because of Roni Horn or the other authors, but because you've read other Anne Carson books and wonder whether this one is as good. it is. And as a bonus, you get two volumes of adorable throwaway lines by the great comic team of Jon Waters and Louise Bourgeois, and one volume of damn near unreadable goo by the reliably dreadful Helene Cixous. I'm an irrational Carson fan, grateful for any little thing, and would have gotten this regardless. What a relief, then, that it's this good. If you're new to Carson, you'll get more for the dollars with other books, like Plainwater and The Economy of the Unlost. if you're here for Bourgeois, you get muchmuchmore of her in the MIT Press collection The Destruction of the Father. If for Waters, you're a fan and will get this regardless, won't you?

The book is a great overview of California Political History. From the end of Mexican rule to the era of Ronald Reagan. Royce D.Delmatier, Clarence F. Mc Intosh and Earl G. Waters as General Editors gathered many authors as contributors. The book brings to life many of the events in the fabric of California History. California, the only state admitted to the Union without ever being a territory. John C. Fremont, David C. Broderick and Leland Stanford from the state's early days are examined in the book. The one time influence of the Southern Pacific Railroad on state politics. The power of the Republican Party. California had only 4 Democratic Governors in the whole 20th Century. In depth study is given to Hiram Johnson and the Progressive Movement. The career of Earl Warren is given a full chapter. 1958, the Republican control of the state taken away by the Democrats. The book concludes, as California was starting to become a power on the national stage. This book is a must for any student of the politics and history of California.

John O'Hara produces some of his best with the novella
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-11
Sermons and Soda Water consists of 3 novellas which involve the same person -- James Mallory. Mallory is thought to be the alter ego of O'Hara. The first story "The Girl on the Baggage Truck" is a story of the younger Mallory barely avoiding being pulled down by involvement with an aspiring actress. The second, my favorite, "Imagine Kissing Pete" is the story of a bad marriage which goes good. I'm surprised no one ever made a movie of this one. The final one is a story of Mallory's senior years. He meets up with an old friend he has gradually moved away from, mainly due to the friend's marriage to a woman no one likes. Mallory is surprised to discover that his friend genuinely loved his wife. These stories remain popular because, like Appointment in Samarra, they highlight O'Hara's ability with dialogue and the description.
