This book, and others in the Paddy series, are perfect for the pre-reader. The ideas are fresh and well handled. The physical production of the book, including drawings, color, etc. etc. are all of the highest quality. My grandchildren (and I) enjoy them all. E.S.

Paint the Sea in Oils Using Special Effects

This is the hardcover edition of the above book. (See more reviews for this book on that other listing).

This book is well worth buying just for the spectacular artwork of E. John Robinson, but the lessons are fantastic, and unlike any I've seen in other books on painting the sea. Even someone who doesn't paint in oils could thoroughly enjoy this book for the knowledge John Robinson shares about his meticulous observations of waves and how they move and how the sunlight plays on the water, etc.. It will make you enjoy the ocean a lot more when you're there, with the deeper understanding of it that John Robinson so graciously shares with us.

John Robinson has spent many hours taking videos of ocean waves, then going home to watch them in slow motion to understand their anatomy as an artist would. He will show you about everything you need to know about painting the ocean and it's many moods, along with rock painting as well, of course. Along with teaching how to paint the sea, Robinson has a very gentle way of teaching which is relaxing and often philosophical. This is a fantastic book that you really will want to keep for quite a while. Robinson's paintings are breathtaking. It's amazing how many different ways there are to paint the sea.

Very Useful Parallel Commentary on Classic Works
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

I picked this up at a local bookstore and immediately I fell in love with it. It features a side by side commentary of the whole book of Psalms in one volume. On the left hand column is the King James Version of the Psalm, and then adjacent to it on the right are the commentary by Charles Spurgeon, John Calvin, and Matthew Henry respectively. These commentaries by each preacher are the edited versions. The print is equivalent to "9" font -- so it might be on the small side for some people, but I found it to be quite legible.

You can't go wrong with the classic expositions by such notable Bible scholars and preachers such as Spurgeon, Calvin, and Henry. If you don't like the edited version, you may want to go for the complete version of Spurgeon, Calvin, and Henry, but then you'll have to lug a whole basketful of books. I found this to be just right for me, in a very handy volume. Highly recommended!!

If you need a book on prayer or want one for a gift, this is it! A MUST! Motivating. Easy reading. Condenses much of what I have read in many books on prayer AND adds many new insights. An excellent resource.

One of the best of these collections
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

This is one of the best of these collections of the WPA slave narratives for laymen. The ex-slaves form Mississippi offer a lot of folk wisdom regarding "way it was" and Andrew Waters correctly connects their stories to the lyrics of Mississippi's legendary blues artists.

We also get some interesting and important information of the little known uprising of Mississippi Whites to end Reconstruction in the 1870s, as well of some memories of the Black major players of that period. That makes it a historians' delight.

This makes your mouth water for the unedited versions of the Mississippi narratives which are available along with the complete colelction on the WPA Slave Narratives website. Look and learn.

This guide was just a perfect tool to beat Quake II for me. It reminds me so much of the Doom II Guide by Prima ; a lot of helpful strategy with a sense of Marine humor. I probably wouldn't have beaten the game without it. The add-on disk was awesome!

The Guide to Maine Flatwater.
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-27
This book is an absolute neccessity for anyone planning to do extensive flatwater paddling in Maine. The book divides maine into regions and then gives detailed descriptions of the most choice paddling spots in those regions. Each overall description entails a map of the lake, general decription of the lake (scenery, fish species, things to look for etc.), campsite reservation numbers if neccesary, and most important DETAILED DIRECTIONS. Unless you are confining your paddling to the southern region, most of the lakes will require driving on winding dirt logging roads that can confuse even the most seasoned forester(I know I was one). However with this book, I was able to find the put in with ease every time. Happy Paddling!
