A fascinating and highly detailed account of the author's approach to making fly rods. The book was originally hand lettered and self-published. This edition, published by a commercial publisher, retains the hand lettering and author's hand drawn illustrations. The amount of time that went into just preparing the book--never mind all the research into technique for rod building--is staggering. I found the level of detail to be almost overwhelming for just a read-through. I'll look forward to moving the book into my work shop where all the author's attention to detail will be truly appreciated.

I will offer one word of caution. The title of the book was just a little misleading. I am a woodturner, and in part looked forward to figuring out how to use traditional turning tools and a lathe to craft a flyrod. In fact, the lathe is used to support and rotate the rod blank so that the builder can use sanding blocks to achieve the correct taper. Not quite as elegant as turning tools, but probably a lot more practical on such thin stock.

All in all an excellent and interesting book.

This is an amazing book. While created to accompany the museum show on Mami Wata (beginning its tour at the Fowler Museum, UCLA) the book stands totaly alone in it's scholarship and artwork, most of which is in color.
Scholars of African/African Diaspora religions, mermaid and snake fanciers and lovers of exciting art will swim alongside Mami Wata as she travels from Europe to Africa to the New World and back.

This book, written in the early 1900s, gives stories the impact of not being watered down over time. It's a small book, and the language may put you off at first, but give yourself a chance to get into it. It's like experience a whole different world.

I teach 8th and 9th grade science and my students love the books in this series because of the wonderful pictures. I like them because they show the different ocean environments. The fact that they are in separate books emphasizes that they are indeed different.

I'm biased because I love this river, so I want students to learn about its history. This book discusses Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery trek along the Missouri in the early 1800s. Maps, historical photographs, reenactment photos, and current photographs enable the student to picture the time.

An excellent guide for the professional tug captain

When this book was written there was no definitive guide or text for the professional tugboater. Only anecdotal information of questionable reliability was available. George "Harry" Reids "Primer of Towing" had been out for some years...and was and is exactly that--an excellent primer.
Captain Blank has done a superb job. I have used his book for years in training mates to become captains, and have found it to be very accurate information with broad spectrum coverage of many diverse aspects of the trade. It is an easy read, aimed at the tugboater who wants to learn and grow in his profession. He has made a significant contribution to the safety and efficiency of tugboating...and made it a lot easier to train crew with a quality reference.

If you enjoyed the late Totch Brown's book, you will love this book. Capt. Johnny Morgan grew-up in the Ten Thousand Islands, fishing and building classic boats. His is one of the few remaining true Florida Voices, and he writes with clarity and honesty about his life in the Glades. I highly recommend it, Randy Wayne White

A great addition to the series

Review Date: 2003-07-27
This collection of Georgia interviews of the WPA slave Narratives (interviews with ex-slaves done in the 1930s) is a fine addition to the series. Pretty good stuff here with excellent storytelling. What's really fascinating is the former slave of Georgia Sen. J.H. Hill (whose name is not given) and his recollection of the Atlanta Riot of 1906 as well as slavery. That's the beauty of this series. These accounts give you a lot of well-told firsthand information that the history books missed. BTW-This is a tad thicker than other volumes of the series.
