Excellent book. Gives a good overview Sijistani's neo-platonic contstruct and his rational approach to solving the paradox of tawhid.

Al Sijistani, Neoplatonism and Ismaili doctrine

Al Sijistani was a leading visionary during the Ismaili Fatimid period. This period was marked by a strong scientific spirit, a rational approach to the universe and a markedly humanistic view of mankind's key place in it. Al Sijistani was among the group of thinkers who coopted both rationalism and the philosophical sciences and answered that religious revelation reflected not merely a separate realm, but the whole of knowledge. Hence reason or the intellect was accepted as a valid source of Islamic understanding. Al Sijistani in fact argues that intellect can never be overconsumed, but thrives on being spent. Learning in a variety of ways improves the soul, giving it strength by adding to its share of intellect.
In reviewing this book, clearly the most interesting aspect of al Sijistani's thought is his combination of Neoplatonic ideas and Ismaili doctrine. This book is in contrast with others on the Ismaili movement that tend to focus on the mystical (batin) aspects of the faith. I have read this book several times and really enjoyed reading it because of its rational approach to the Ismaili faith. I was quite surprised by the sound, readily defensible, theoretical foundation that he was able to build for central and critical issues of Ismaili doctrine.

I'm not Catholic but I was really looking forward to reading this book and I have only been disappointed in one area. If you like the Pope -and let's face he is a pretty popular guy- then you will like this book. Much of the wit and common sense that make John Paul II a favorite even among Protestants come through in his writings of which these readings are a sample. My only complaint is that there are 120 rather than 365 or 366. I would like to have had breakfast every day with the Pope rather than being shorted. I am sure there was sufficient material to fill a larger book. Maybe they are saving it for another repast.

Being one of PJP's biggest fans I was on tenterhooks to find out how the holy father starts his day and boy oh boy I wasn't dissapointed.
This booki is jam packed with amusing anecdotes like the time the holy father met Rabbi Lionel Blue for coissants and prune juice on the Mary Magdalene verranda overlooking St Peter's Square.
The good Rabbi presented the pontiff with a glass case containing the foreskins of celebrity jews including Sammy Davis Junior and Dana International.
Oh how I laughed - Papal Bull? I thought I'd had a cow!
I found it holy enjoyable and I hope the sales are mass-ive.

Delicious family feast

This book is a great story about Sunday dinner at Grannie's house. Jay Jay's mother drops him off at Grannie's house one morning while she goes off to pick up his father. Jay Jay helps his grandmother set the table and feed her fish, but he's quite hungry. Finally, the rest of the dinner guests arrive and they sit down to enjoy a spectacular feast together. After dinner, everyone is full, happy, and tired. The book is engaging and not at all scary. It has about 500 words.

Very sweet book with beautiful illustrations. My "almost three year old" loves it. We cuddle and hug while we read it like they do in the book. The author portrays the importance of family gathering for dinner and bonding with one another.

This was one of the first Martin Waddell books that we got and we still read it over and over. It shows true to life family dynamics--and beleive me it happens that you think one or the other is watching the little one in a big family!

Rated about 3-7 year olds. Brilliantly illustrated

It was Sammy's day for minding John Joe but he got bored so he ran of down Cow Lane to his friend Willie Brennan he was meant to take John Joe but he took Splinter the dog instead.Mary was very mad as it was not her day for minding John Joe.she went down to brennan's house to find Sammy but he was down at the river.Mary couldn't go because John Joe was too small so then John Joe offered to mind himself while Mary looked for Sammy. After Mary left the brennans big hen came up to John Joe and John Joe was very frightened. He called for help but no one could hear him so he ran away from the hen. he jumped up on the wall and the hen followed etc. When Mary and Sammy returned they couldn't find John Joe so Sammy sent Splinter to look for John Joe.They eventually found him asleep in the corn. All ended well and mammy said there was no way she was ever going to loose her John Joe. The story is excellently illustrated every child I have read it to enjoyed it thoroughly

When I projected to buy this book, I did not know how lessons would help me in my karate practice. Now I make all the day lessons of this book on the morning at 6 o'clock and this is fun because it represents for me the intelligence of Kanazawa kancho. For me he is the greatest master around the world in karate. Thank you Hirokazu and thanks to Paul A. Walker for this book.

Valuable resource

There are some books which can be informative, and those which are inspirational. This book is all that and more. It's useful. It's probably the best resource for a karate instructor for planing a coherente training schedule, and a teaching strategy.

It's clear, based on sound experience -the author learned with the best of the best, at the SKIF Hombu Dojo- and based on clear concepts.

Truth to be said, I am not a karate instructor. However, I believe that if you plan to become one yourself, this book will certainly help.

I firmly belive this book to be a valuable resource for spreding karate and its benefits -which go beyond self defense- throughout the world.

This is a superbly calm story to read to children. The illustrations are gorgeous. My 5 yr old daughter has loved this book since the day I brought it home. She often requests it for a bed time story and it seems to really calm her spirit. It basically tells the story of what happens as the sun goes down and the moon fills the sky in a poignant and beautiful way.

I cannot believe more people have not reviewed this book yet-it is just a beautiful children's book.

My children received this book as a gift when they were small, and I have tried to buy it as a gift for others - I am delighted to see it is available! The illustrations are lovely, and the text has the same rythmic, soothing quality as the best bedtime books. As far as I am concerned, "Sun's Asleep" ranks right up there with "Goodnight, Moon."

A poetry anthology for thoughtful children
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-11
This book is a children's collection of poetry. However, it appears that Michael Rosen has attempted to balance the chipper, happy poems of many children's anthologies with more intense, darker ones. The overall tone is fairly serious, though beautifully so. He combines such sweet verse as Skating by William Wordsworth, with more wistful or even death-filled ones, such as La Belle Dame Sans Merci by John Keats.

The book is written chronologically, from Shakespeare and William Blake to Langston Hughes and Judith Wright. He includes from one to five poems from each of his 40 or so collected poets, with a short, thoughtful biography of each.

The book is strikingly illustrated by Paul Howard, who alters his style and technique for each poem, aptly evoking the feeling and time period of each poem.

I would consider this as a readaloud for children ages 8+; younger children are likely to be disturbed by some of the darker selections.

This book was originally published as Classic Poetry: An Illustrated Collection .

I picked this one up in the kids section of a book shop; it's not a kid's book. The poems are classics, sure there are some poems such as "The Jumblies" by Edward Lear and "Jabberwocky" by Carrol that count as kids poems but mostly the poems are for adult readers or perhaps teens with a lot of general knowledge. I particularly liked "Ozymandias" by Shelley and "The song of the shirt" by Thomas Hood. The book highlights the lives of the poets as well as their poems with brief biographical details by Michael Rosen. The poems are set out in chronological order of the birth date of their author starting with Shakespeare in 1564 to Judith Wright in 1915. At the back of the book there are a few pages of interesting facts and some explanations concerning the poems as well as an index that references authors and key phrases in the poems.

Another beautiful collection from Walker Evans, showing his greatest photos of billboards, movie posters, newspaper headlines, theater marquees, graffiti, street signs, hand-painted shop frotns, covering 1920-1975. You will discover variety of ways to interpret the different layers of meanings from his photos with striking impression. It provides an excellent documentary about American culture. Walker Evans also collected and exhibited signs, sometimes next to his photographs, which brings his work into another level. From letters to graphics, from graphics to signs, sometimes people is becoming helpless under the mass media. Highly recommended for graphics / black and white fans.

Walker Evans SIGNS are unique and wonderful. These images glow in there black and white surroundings. Some of the images are simple and delicate and other are busy and loud...a great mixure.Codrescu's essays give you a delightful walk through of Evans life.Andrei has an original insight... description of these signs from our past. There is excitment in these essays...energy in which Evans must have had as he photographed these images. As you read on you will see Evans attraction to signs. I also enjoyed the layout of the book. The images have room to breath and the text is perfect. I was very happy to add this book with my collection of photography books.

This books offers us an untainted view of the establishment of the Fatimiyya Caliphate. It provides the readers with a critical, covert view of the aspects of life in Ifriqiya at that time. It's unfortunate the editors could not expound on certain situations that took place pre and post advent of the dynasty such as the factual reasons behind the execution of the two Da'i brothers.

The translated manuscript provides a solid glimpse of Ibn al-Haytham's personal view and feelings of the ongoings during this period in time.
