I'M USING CMDT SINCE 4 YEARS AND I THINK IT IS BEST FOR USMLE STEP 2 AND 3. THIS BOOK IS REALLY A QUICK GUIDE FOR PHYSICIAN WHO ARE PRACTICING IN FAMILY MEDICINE OR INTERNAL MEDICINE. BEST INVESTMENT. I ESPECIALLY DON'T LIKE THE ONE OF THE REVIEW WRITTEN ABOVE SAYING THAT THIS BOOK IS FOR LAY-MAN. LOOK AT THE PAGE # 699 IN CMDT 2002 FOR DRUGS CAUSING PANCREATITIS.

A QUALITY COMPANION FOR THE MEDICALLY INCLINED

Despite the fact that user-flexibility was not uppermost on the minds of its designers, the "CMDT on CD-ROM" is a quality companion for the medically inclined. Both medics and medical scientists may find this software irresistible. Detailed diagnostic and therapeutic descriptions, which spanned across hundreds of diseases and disorders were provided in a clear and sequential order.
The contents of this CD-ROM are updated annually, and although it would be nice to own the most recent copy, one would not be lagging too faraway with any issue that is not more than five years off the pace.

excellent text

This is an excellent book--as a medical student I have found it invaluable. I have no idea what futuredoc is talking about in his review---this book has many pertinent details. Regardless, the purpose of this book is not to be encyclopedic, but instead to give the reader a brief yet detailed synopsis on specific disease entities. If you want to know everything, then obviously you should go to Harrisons. But carrying Harrison's around is impractical for most people, and it is nice to glance at a text in-between patients when you need to look something up, or brush up on something you haven't seen in a while or can't remember off the top of your head.

Additionally, an important detail to remember is that this text is updated yearly, and has a reasonable enough price to consider buying it at least every other year to keep up with all of the ever-changing aspects of General Internal Medicine.

I highly recommend this book with no hesitation to anyone interested in a basic Internal Medicine Text that is still detailed enough for clinical use.

Excellent for the Clinic or Hospital setting

Without a doubt, this is one of the best paperback books on current medical diagnoses and treatments that I had ever used. Certainly, the book does not go into DEEP detail like Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, but the two books have different goals. I would recommend Harrison's for extreme depth of learning and I would recommend CMDT to help you slug it out through your day at the hospital or clinic. I refer to this book more than any other because the depth of information is good for every day practice, and it is written extremely well. In fact, it is a pleasure to read over when you have time to pass.

good pocket guide.

this book is not thorough as in covering everything you would need for every topic. You should purchase the bigger book for that purpose, but as a pocket guide its awesome. If you just need a refresher on topics, or just need to know the very pertinent parts of each disease or pathology this is a great book. Its small enough to fit in your coat during rounds as well. The thing i also like about it is that everything you would need to know about whatever you would be looking for has its own designated page. A page a pathology.

I thought this book was very interesting and informative to a pre-med student. I'm not in med schools yet, but love to read about medical related things.

New edition no good!

I purchased the new edition to replace my 2005, which had been destroyed through constant use and my backpack. I was very disappointed to find that the background information in the beginning of most chapters was deleted so that each chapter starts immediately talking about disease. For instance, the nutrition chapter (which is called nutritional disorders in the new edition) cut out 9 pages of background information on nutritional requirements, dietary recommendations, etc. I thought new editions were supposed to improve upon and update previous editions, not cut out crucial information. I would recommend buying an older edition instead of wasting your money on this incomplete one!

Didn't like the idea of going back and forth online to book and book to online. Use to be a great book I will not recommend this book to anyone anymore, I am a foreigne medical graduate and use to tell all the graduates coming from abroad to read this book not anymore. I hope the authors are listening.

Too much money

Enough said....... quote "However, this current (2008) edition of CMDT has several chapters (more than the 2007 edition) available only online, AND for the very first time, the online access is $79 extra. "

Good, but not great.

Having owned many previous editions of this book, I have to say that I am somewhat disappointed by the amount of material that is available only online for a substantial fee (relatively, compared to previous free online content, or even the street price of the print edition). Some of the online information surely could have been incorporated into this edition. Most of the algorithms that appeared in previous editions have been left out, and let's face it folks, most of those haven't changed at all since the 2007, or even the 1997 editions. I am not inclined, however, to grab a bunch of older editions off my bookshelf to find them. A lot of very important basic pharmacology that appeared in older editions has been left out of the 2008 print edition. I don't keep old texts and references on the shelves anyway. I am a D.D.S., M.D. with an undergraduate background in pharmacology, so I picked up on much of the missing stuff right away, just leafing through. Even with the negatives associated with this edition, I will likely buy future editions because there just isn't another reference with this much in a single volume that is as concise and easy to find. I am used to grabbing this book for a quick summary of dx and tx that I don't treat a lot. I do head and neck surgery, and I just don't see patients with Cushing's or Tetralogy of Fallot for cripe's sake! Wading through Harrison's Int. Medicine or a two volume cardiology text is something I am not going to do while a patient is sitting in an exam room waiting for me to reappear. I'll use my CMDT though. One can nitpick on virtually anything that is "new" or "different". So let's be honest, most of us who really use this thing can easily afford the $79 for online access, and most of us who have used a number of previous editions will continue to use CMDT unless it evolves into something totally worthless, and that's just not going to happen.
