Various authors - Mark Dever, Daniel Akin, and Stan Norman to name a few - provide overlapping chapters on themes like "Regaining Meaningful Church Membership," "Fencing the Table," and "The Reestablishment of Proper Church Discipline."

This book mentions by name current debates within the SBC on these issues. There is no doubt that this book will benefit the daily conversation among denominational leaders and pastors regarding the health of Baptist churches. I found the authors to be soaked in Scripture, aware of church history, and given to pastoral practicality.

"In a day when many believe the most important ingredients to effective ministry are intellect, intensity and insight this volume restores our faith in the fact that it is really integrity in the local church. Integrity is rooted in our private lives, reflected in our personal lives, reinforced in our professional lives and ultimately revealed in our public lives as churchmen. Restoring Integrity...read it and reap!"

"My favorite verse in the Bible is found in Proverbs 20:7, which magnifies integrity. The church will be blessed by our Heavenly Father in direct proportion to its integrity. This book will chart the path that leads to the place of knowing His hand on the church's work. What we are in the inward parts is what matters most."

"Restoring Integrity in the Church. Formidable Assignment! Formidable scholars! Formidable proposals! I believe the Lord will use this book by committed conservative scholars to return our churches to New Testament integrity."

Jerry Vines
Pastor Emeritus, First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, FL
Two-time President, Southern Baptist Convention
and President, Jerry Vines Ministries

"The loss of a biblical vision of the local church - indeed the collapse of biblical ecclesiology in many congregations - is the greatest threat to the Baptists. Restoring Integrity is a book urgently needed and well timed. The writers of this book are some of the brightest theologians and scholars in Baptist life today, and they are deeply committed to the recovery of integrity in Baptist life and in Baptist churches. We have needed this book for a long time."

This book does an outstanding job of following David Jackson Logan's life during the Civil War, through letters to his wife and family, letters to the newspaper, and his diary. I am fortunate to have already known what an outstanding man David Jackson Logan was, as well as, his father, John Randolph Logan, and his siblings. Especially David's brother Ben F. Logan, my great-great grandfather. I hope everyone enjoys reading this incredible book.

Hike up those boots!

I enjoy all of the Winnett books because they are accurate, fun to read and reliable. This book has little chapters on over 100 trips in the Sierra range, and the descriptions of each trek are a total delight. So often these hiking books neglect to tell you how to reach the trailhead and oftentimes they don't provide detailed instructions. Winnett never makes this mistake. You will not need a separate map to locate any of the trailheads, his maps and written instructions are first-rate. In fact, there is even a nifty fold-out map sewn into the rear pocket so you can tote it along on any of your journeys. Equally interesting is that this book doesn't merely give elevation gains, difficulty ratings and desriptions of the trail conditions. These are vital to know, but Winnett also includes little bits of information of what kinds of wild flowers you will encounter, birds, wildlife and other little nuggets neglected in other guides.

The book is supposed to be only for overnight backpacking trips, but there are many trails here that can be used for day hikes. These trips will be in the 10-16 mile range and any strong hiker can easily do these hikes in one day. If you do choose to go the multi-day backpacking route, Winnett describes water sources, camping sites and addresses whether bears or marmots might be a problem for you. Most importantly, he tells you where to find water and whether the water source is reliable throughout the whole year.

I can't recommend this guide highly enough. Even if you're an armchair hiker, you'll derive many hours of vicarious joy from this guide.

a great book for bridge baron owners

If you own Bridge Baron software, you'll find this a good addition to your library, and even if you don't own that software, it's still a worthwhile read. The book has 28 bridge hands (which may not seem like much, but the analysis is extensive) that are played by humans (often experts) and then played by Bridge Baron.

Bridge columns in newspapers and bridge problems in most books usually have a point to make and illustrate. The hands in newspapers cannot be ones that require extensive analysis--there isn't space. Most problems in books devote a page or two to the lesson at hand. In Computer's Twist, the problem hands are more real-life--many require a discovery process that requires you to keep options open. The hands in the book mostly have 4-7 pages of description. For each hand, you get to see how Bridge Baron does with the same hand. You learn where baron has problems--false-carding can be effective, it may not recognize leads as singletons, and it may be possible for you when playing against the Baron AI to tell when Baron has a singleton, etc.

So if you play against the Baron AI on your computer (as I do) this book will help. It's well-written, provocative, and enjoyable.

I used many of Dr. Carson's books in college, and found them to be great for getting a good understanding of the issues. He usually had an overview the issues and both sides of the argument explained. I threw out alot of my college textbooks but kept all of his books. Only issue is the argments in the book may become dated so try to get the latest editions.

Ogden - working with very hurt patients

Ogden shares with us his experience of working with patients who are very difficult to work with or to help. He tells of the first meeting with people who seek his help and the warning stories they tell him about how the therapy will fail or even hurt them or the therapist. It helped me to listen in a different way to my clients and to talk to them about what they told me. This is an excellent book that all therapists need to read and to think about.

"Today's American: How Free?" answers the question in more than ten categories that Americans care about.

How are we doing on liberties? How well is our electoral system functioning? How are we doing on long-standing issues like race and equality? How strong are America's institutions of government, law enforcement, labor, media, and independent civil society?

One of the best non-fiction books of 2008, "Today's American" arrives in the middle of an important election year, generating sustained debate and media interest across the country and world, and is perhaps the most important survey ever released by the venerable human rights organization. Read it to participate in one of the most important conversations gong on in the United States.
