The photographs are fab, then you start to read ,and a little voice says wait a minute, espically as ive just finised his way by kitty kelley,i know he is dad ,and she's his little chicken, but how anyone in there right mind would fill a book cover to cover with such sugar sweet garbage,as this is beyond me,unless of course your ego and arrogance is higher than everest, now where would she have got that from, her explaining away the acts of voilence and cruelty,of one of the most feard performers to ever tread the boards, are airily brushed away with "hell get mad,and youll get mad",but if you face him them all will be well, ah shucks ,that is if your head is still on your shoulders, here and there, the veneer seems to slip, such as when descriping Richard Burtons, tribute to sinatra,at a luncheon in sinatras honour. She commends burtons tribute, then icily adds his words were by someone else, burtons diaries (Rich a life)leave no illusions of he really thought of sinatra, somehow i get the feeling this didnt escape her,its these little cracks in the facade, that show the true nancy, like father like daughter, sorry honey you dont fool me for one minute, little chicken, little vulture, more like it.

I liked the stories about Frank Sinatra told in this book. Any story or interview about him fascinates me, so that's an easy accomplishment. It was nice to hear stories about him from his daughter's POV. But please, spare me the talk of your own career. Write your own biography if you want to talk about that. Also, you can just so tell LOVES the fact that she is Frank Sinatra's daughter. Innumerable references to him as "Daddy" well into adulthood - who calls their Dad "Daddy" after the age of 10? Even in her speeches of today, she calls him that. OK. We get it. You're his daughter. Whoop dee doo. Get over yourself. Otherwise, this book is an interesting read and you learn a little more about the greatest singer that has ever graced the globe.

A Daughter's Shining Perspective

I have loved Mr. Sinatra since I was very young, have heard most of the bad stuff about him, and it seems that this book's purpose is to discuss his GOOD qualities. Which is a proper perspective from a daughter. If a father has raised his daughter well, she will recognize his faults, but focus on the things that made him a hero in her eyes. Remember that notion? I lost my mother in death at about the same age that Frank and Nancy Sr. divorced, and I appreciate the closeness that developed between the man and his oldest daughter. It's a precious thing. It's a mistake to read the book without understanding that it's biased. But almost ANY book about him will be, as will any book written by a daughter about her father. I'm glad for both of them that their relationship was that sweet, and for us, that we get to see a glimpse of it.
Whatever else he was,the man was..... a man. And a father. And an incredible influence on our culture. I think all that shows up in this book, and I loved it. There's plenty of other people to demonize him, thank you Nancy for letting us see the other side.

Although this book contains a number of Frank Sinatra's great pieces, they are the original compositions that are sometimes very different from Frank Sinatra's versions that you are probably looking for.

I believe this to be one of the countless books haphazardly thrown together following Frank Sinatra's death. There are numerous factual errors that show the author did not take the time to thoroughly research her subject. However, the text is not the main focus of this book. It relies heavily on pictures and for that reason I gave it 2 stars. There are some very nice pictures if you're looking for that, but if you want a more substantial biography then I suggest looking elsewhere.

First of all, let me say that I am a HUGE fan of Frank Sinatra. Having said that, for the most part this book is a joke. The author clearly wrote a puff piece. This book can be read in 45 minutes - all 236 pages. It is a collection of anecdotes & quotes of famous people who all speak lovingly about Mr. S. Nothing more. I keep it & re-read it every few years because I'm a Frank fan, but there's really nothing there that makes you say "wow".

Horrible

I concur with pretty much all of the opinions here. I don't think it's any secret that the "Rat Pack" were not the most honorable of fellows but I think it is more of an insult that these two hacks thought they had the ability to write any sort of decent bio about them. What is worse, as one reviewer pointed out, was their feeble-minded review of their fimology (like anybody cares what they think?). Horrible book, waste of time.

Out-ratting the Rats

The back cover suggests that the main reason for the Rat Pack's appeal was the fun they seemed to be having. The contents, however, seem to be intended to deconstruct this premise. One by one, in numbing detail, the five men (and "mascot" Shirley Maclaine) are subjected to jaundiced, gossipy biographies that portray them as pathetic characters. Very little of the information is original - many of the anecdotes related here are familiar and seem selectively drawn from more in-depth biographies. The tone is consistently vulgar and deprecating. There are also tedious reviews of all the films of every Pack member, including critiques of seemingly every cast member's performance, prolonging an already unpleasant read. It is as if the authors wished to undermine the undeniable talent and charm these performers had, and which remains their legacy. This cheap anthology simply exploits that legacy.

I'm going to throw away my copy, too. Perhaps the most annoying aspect, for a film buff, is how the authors add insult to injury with their "film reviews." It's bad enough that they get facts wrong -- most of the score to ON THE TOWN was NOT written by Leonard Bernstein, for example -- but then these ignoramuses presume to pass negative judgment on classics like ON THE TOWN and FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, a right they clearly haven't earned with their "research."

The only reason I give this book one star is because zero stars wasn't an option. It took two guys to write this tripe? One monkey could have done a better job. This book is lazy and poorly written and I am ticked off that I wasted my money on it. The definitive book on the Rat Pack has got to be Shawn Levy's. After reading the first two pages of Levy's book I was hooked. The difference between a real writer and a couple of hacks.

CLIFF "RAT" NOTES
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-15
Here is the deal. If you are just starting to get into the Rat Pack or any of the players individually. Then this book is a good start. I would call it the Cliff notes of the individuals and their movies. If you have seen all the movies including the Matt Helm movies or if you have already read books on Dean, Frank, Sammy's biography then you are way ahead of this book and pass it by.

But if you have not seen the movies and want to learn the basics of each man and then from there search into each one of them seperatly then this is a good starter. There are some great books on all the guys but you will finded Sammy's Biography to be the most fun. Remember to check out deanmartinfancenter.com for more info on the Rat Pack. For the guys who wrote this you could have given us some fun facts or answered some questions, instead they read everyone else book and put together their own version.

Good selection, weak arrangements
Helpful Votes: 41 out of 42 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-07
Warning: In general, these are not the arrangements you hear on Sinatra records, at least the ones from the Capitol era. Usually they are not even close - different keys, less instrumentation, etc. For that reason, I found it to be an almost worthless compilation. Why not provide the arrangements people know and love?
