i have watched and turned off a lot of network t.v. iam 58 and do not waste my time with useless shows. this is one fine dramatic series with a cast of characters that you defintly become with and care about. the writers are top not the fast paced directing fits the shows characters and helps build the ssuspence.then come the actors bringing it all to life and making the people(especially with flashbacks) believeable. their is no black and white answers to the problems they face-just like in real life you do the best you can sometimes for the right reasons-sometimes for the wrong reasons- and then you live with the consequences of your actions. people perceive vic makey as a hero even though he breaks the law because you know down deep he really believes in what he is doing. season seven will be hard to watch knowing it will be over a some kind of end will be put to mackey or his career. long live lemonhead!!
LOVE IT!!!!!!

If you aren't already hooked on this series, buy season 1 and start watching. You will be hooked after a couple of episodes. When I got to the last episode of Season 6, I stopped and watched several episodes a second time just to make it last. It is that good!
Amazing series...thanks to my son who got me hooked.

A couple of years ago, before my son graduated from college, he made a parody skit of The Shield to present to a committee at school for a job he was up for. He showed it to me and I busted a gut...I had no clue what The Shield was but it got me interested enough to watch. I rented the first couple of seasons from Netflix and downloaded the rest from Amazon Unbox. Loved it.
It ruined my T.V. viewing habits though. It is so realistic and the acting is amazing. It is edge of your seat, sad, disgusting and joyful all at the same time. It definitely makes you think about that line that we draw, in terms of right and wrong. Is it necessary to ever step over it in the pursuit of justice?
I highly recommend this series. Just watch the first episode of season one and you won't be able to turn back. I promise.

The author makes bold, logical and necessary recommendations for the enhancement of corporate governance in a reader friendly format. This is a valuable contribution to the subject and should be carefully considered by all boardroom constituencies - directors, emloyees, investors and other key stakeholders.

This book has been a real help to me in my anti yeast adventure. I have been taking lamisil and following the diet for 3 weeks with great success. It is a roller coaster ride, but more ups than downs. The food is not the most tasty at times, but with so little choice it is hard. A favorite is the Oat and Orange Muffins (which I vary with different flavorings Raspberry is delicious!) -- they are simple to make, moist and freeze well. Also real good are the Rice Ball Cookies. This book is a must for those with this particular need. (ALSO - to a previous reviewer: I BELIEVE STEVIA IS VEGETABLE GLYCERIN AND WATER.)

This one of those great textbooks that you find has the most practical approach and tips you never knew about before and that perhaps many standard medical textbooks are lacking.
You need to use it in association with a standard textbook of psychiatry, but for me this book is a great discovery. I am in my first year of psychaitry training and doing hospital psychiatry. I had to do a presentation for medical students on somatoform disorders and found so many practical suggestions and great cases presentations in the book. Somehow this textbook manages to make reading and learning enjoyable and even more importantly, memorable

As a practicing psychiatrist with C-L responsibilities, this book has given me the right tool to deal with many clinical issues in the medical and surgical environment. Despite the exhaustive and elaborate details about common topics, each chapter is quick to digest. Indeed, it reads like a handbook but it has the details of a textbook. I highly recommend it especially that this well-written literature has helped me pass the certification in Psychosomatic Medicine (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology).

OK, so it's not ALL of C&L, but it does represent the equivalent of the best review articles of each C&L subject(the way MY hospital teaches the subject.)In fact some of the hints, especially by Dr./Fr. Casem, I have not found anywhere else, and are very practical even at my basic level (I am a psychiatry resident, curently doing my C&L rotation.) My attending was so impressed at my "knowledge" (I'd read the book!), HE went out and bought one, too. If you've an interest in C&L psychiatry, or in the management of "difficult" patients on any hospital service, this book surely tops the list.

This is simply the best overview of psychiatry currently available. If you treat human beings--or simply want to understand them better, read this book. Why this one? Medical "literature," unfortunately, is often little more than data-mongering. Data can be interesting, but on its own, it will not help you care for patients competently and compassionately. Very rarely, a medical text goes beyond data and information to knowledge, an informed, balanced, comprehensive, learned, and practical perspective. This book is *always* knowledgeable, but often goes one better, achieving (and conveys) that most rare of medical traits, wisdom. Read this book: your patients, and your practice will be better for it.

Informative Primer

Review Date: 2007-11-18
Michael Rosenbaum's "The Fighting Arts" is a great little primer on the subject. Just over a hundred pages, the book lays out the development of martial warfare, both Eastern and Western, with an introductory examination into the complexities and nuances involving politics, religious rites, and modern developments. He handles these items with flare and simplicity, making this book a great introductory read; however, as with any primer, it cannot be considered the last word on the subject nor does it really explore the cause, successes and failure so certain campaigns. Of course, it is not the books purpose, but it is a noted problem.
He also shows how fighting systems become transactional, transplanting form one culture to another. For such a heavy subject, he does a nice job in simplifying it for the reader. Interesting notes are also from society to individual martial adaptations and emphasis. He touches briefly on things such as myth and rites of passages.
A special note is that he addresses the new cultural myths of what and who are a superior martial artists and systems. He uses Bruce Lee as a main focus since so much has been written and said about him. After all, Bruce is a cultural icon that did popularly promote the martial arts through film. While is critique of the Bruce lee phenomena is brief and could have been a little more developed, his over all points about the overstatements of Bruce Lee are appropriate. It brings a balance to the Bruce Lee cult status so many have bestowed upon him (and I say this as Bruce Lee fan).
His further critique that modern mass media have created one dimensional heroes and myths is also well worth noting and very accurate. It is a sad fact that the further we have come along, the less sophisticated our stories have become.
He is influenced greatly by Bando, which is noticable when discussing martial artists and he does cite some of the same resources extremely often, which suggests he did not investigate some items further. All in all, as a primer, it holds up pretty well.

The author has good ideas and excellent sources to back up his work. I think it's a very enlightening look at what our modern martial arts truly are and what they are capable of. Those who consider their modern art to be identical in form and purpose to the systems practiced in the ancient past will be disappointed and will likely strongly disagree with Rosenbaum's points. I also appreciate his discussion of Western martial arts. Most people are unaware of the existence of true "martial arts" in Western history, so it is interesting to see some of that information presented as well.
While I enjoyed the book, I only gave it three stars because of the often glaring grammatical errors present throughout the text. Realizing that it is impossible to write a book without such errors, it still seems that a better job of editing would have greatly improved the presentation and polish of the book. I liked the points raised throughout, but I found myself repeatedly having to go back and reread a paragraph because of some the grammatical errors.
Overall, a very good book with some excellent points, but it suffers because of a lack of polish. Worth buying if you are interested in the history and evolution of martial arts rather than just learning new techniques.

An interesting read. Pros include a very interesting subject, and excellent exploration into the myths of martial arts in their civilian interpretations and their relationship to the military skills taught exclusively for warfare. Cons include: terrible grammar; a very poor writing style that meanders without maintaining interest; a badly-organized theme which is poorly spaced; the author really doesn't effectively argue his themes, he merely states them, and footnotes other, better martial arts writers and scholars like Draeger. Overall, a great subject that definitely deserves more treatment that is dragged down by poor organization and poor writing. Worth a library rental, but not much there for purchase.

The Fighting Arts: Their Evolution From Secret Societies To Modern Times by Bando, Judo, and Boxing expert Michael Rosenbaum, provides the interested reading with a fascinating and informative survey tour of martial arts from the depths of history down to the modern day. From the ancient cultures that first helped shape these personal combat arts to their assimilation into contemporary Western society, The Fighting Arts covers the changes in the styles, the reasons why the modern military doesn't train in "classical" martial arts, and so much more. The Fighting Arts is a wealth of information and reason, and confidently recommended for anyone looking to learn more about how these martial arts came to be what they are today.

Rosenbaum's approach is far from a how to or how to do martial arts..Instead he explains in a very easy to understand manner just how the fighting arts evolved due to our cultural moors and traditions, not just Asian but other counties as well. From thisfoundation he then clear points out the differences between oldworld battlefield martial arts and their evolution and our modern quasi martial arts that consist of many things most not of a martial nature. It is well sourced and historically correct. He uses various systems and styles as examples of to explain his points, from Tae Kwon Do to JKD, UFC and others well known today. His views are at times blunt in their ascessments of todays fighting arts especially when compared to those practiced 100-200 years ago. All in all I really enjoyed it, found it refreshing, educational and even at times challenging compared to what I have been led to believe about the marital arts.

This new calendar has everything you want from the Smallville characters. Perfect to get this every month of the year. Of course, the focal point is Tom Welling who my wife is in love with. But for us Erica Durance is there altough for some reason that I would like to know she does not get much exposure (or pics) for that matter. So, we get Michael Rosembaum, Kristin Kreuk (still lovely but the dress makes her look like pregnant) and some other characters. This is ok for a nice and different calendar which is on one of our walls in our main room. If you are a Smallville fan (not Superman's mythology) this deserves the chance.

We see Clark in 4 pictures; Lana, Lex and Oliver Queen: 3 each; Lois: 2; Jimmy Olsen: 1 and Chloe fans, note there is only 1 picture of her. No Martha or Lionel. I would have liked to see the calendar's back cover before buying it. There are also small pictures on each month, from season 5 and 6 episodes. There are comments for each picture and some of them are outdated. I put a 3 because I don't like those promo pics and they had nothing to do with what happened in the show in season 6. If you like them, then I guess you will like this calendar.

As a goju practitioner with over 25 years experience, I found much of this work to be confirming of exisiting knowledge. However there are many, many clear insights which have thown new light on old topics! I found the book to be easy to read, practical, and offering a clear and detailed insight into the world of kata. This book, is a must have for any goju practitioner looking to expand their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of kata. The book is full of aggravating typographical errors...words missing and so on. The book needs revision with a view to correcting these mistakes which provide the reader with a source of real annoyance. Look past this, and the book should be on every goju teacher's desk for constant reference. Hooray! At last a classy text on goju! But martial artists of any style will find it excellent. Congratulations to the authors. Well done.

Written by a martial artist of 25 years' experience who has studied and practiced Isshin Ryu, Bando, Judo, and Boxing, Kata And The Transmission Of Knowledge teaches the reader about the deeper meaning behind ritual forms and pre-arranged fighting techniques known as katas. Chapters foster a better understanding of katas as means to transmit successful techniques from one generation to the next; the author scrutinizes katas that have been used in Greek, Egyptian, Asian, African and European societies since ancient times. Exploring the deeper meaning of katas to gain insights into the views and ethics of societies from which they originated, Kata And The Transmission Of Knowledge is especially recommended for martial artists seeking to better understand the nuances, purpose, history, and applications of the skills they pursue.

It reads like completely scientifical, but especially when you are not trained, it's difficult to understand where the writer is wrong and where he's right. HCA for weight loss is complete nonsens. I tried it myself with no result and recently a scientific study pointed out that HCA has zero effect.

This was a good place to start learning about HCA. If you use this book to understand basically how HCA can be used to prevent excess calories from being stored as fat, and to aid in appetite suppression by increasing glycogen stores in the liver, you can then reference the most recent clinical trials (there are now 18 of them) showing that if you take the *proper amount* of HCA, you WILL lose weight with it. The only problem with this book is it is dated, since the new research indicates a daily dosage of 4000 to 6000 mg of HCA for effective weight loss. This book doesn't reflect this new knowlege. But again, a good place to start learning about this wonderful herb.
