I was a little disappointed in this book, I thought it was a list of things to do. It was more like vague suggestions with web sites to check out. Several of the web sites were no longer working. I didn't find a lot of new information that I have not already read about. This is more of a beginners guide for going green. I would have gotten a lot more out of it several years ago. So if you are just starting to find options for going green, this is a book for you.

Most people want to do whatever they can to make the world a better place and protect the Earth. For them, marching in demonstrations or engaging in direct action is not an option. What to do? In subjects ranging from Air to Water to Food to Global Warming, this book lists many web sites with more information to get the reader involved in protecting the environment.

Perhaps the reader just wants to find out what sort of recycling facilities are in their town. One of their first stops should be to www.earth911.org. To look for reusable or biodegradable diapers, visit www.organicbebe.com. The Wildlife Conservation Society (www.wcs.org) has a very distinguished record in conserving endangered species. For those who have compost heaps, Starbucks will give you their coffee grounds. Details are at www.starbucks.com/aboutus/compost, or talk to your local manager.

A handy wallet card on produce and pesticides called "The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides" (bring it with you when shopping) is available from www.foodnews.org. A good site on global warming is www.climatestar.org. The Busy Person's Guide to Greener Living can be found at www.greenmatters.com. Do you have stuff you no longer need that someone else may want? Before that trip to the landfill, visit www.freecycle.org. Adopt a lobster (and help ensure a continued supply of lobsters) at www.lobsters.org, the Lobster Conservancy.

This is a wonderful book. It's small (it really can fit in your back pocket), it's well laid out, and the reader can pick their level of involvement. It is very highly recommended. Saving the environment does not get much easier than this.

As is the list of environmental problems so overwhelming and the scale so global, so is the feeling that one person can't make a difference. And, even in the trying, the choices are so many and the information so contradictory, that it's hard to know where to start. Here, at last, is the logical successor to "50 Simple Things...," better, more evolved, and yet easier. A wealth of choices that can be tailored to match what you feel you CAN do now, what you MIGHT feel you can do later, and what you SHOULD be telling your friends-- in short, a compendium of answers on a scale that any of us can comprehend.

What a wonderful book!

This little book is simply amazing! It is a wealth of information, contacts and web sites regarding the environment and ways we can do our part to help. It is like the spark of desire, that hopefully, ignites the fire of action, encouraging us to seek out and "embrace a more environmentally friendly lifestyle". It is witty, informative and easy to navigate. A perfect gift and an exceptional manual for a meaningful life.

Mona Lisa's Seduction brings you in and keeps you there. Angelina Moreau, who says yes to what the universe is telling her instead of fighting it, lands appropriately in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Once a haven for writers and artists, P-town today is a well-known gay summer resort. As one who seems to have weathered an oftentimes-brutal childhood, "Angel" must face her past while finding her path for the future. Kim Rogers' Angelina is an inspiration for those of us seeking to discover our true selves--a character who says love is life's litmus test...to see who you are and to see who you want to become.

For those of you who are critical of the mannerism of what we read, Kim's novel is a blessing. Attentively interesting, concise, yet with just the right amount of discriptive adjectives. A story of a young girls search for her path in life with a suprising, yet acceptable ending. Moreover, Kim possess a great ability of phrasing the characters situations in a most unique way which keeps you reading for more.

A good book that everyone should enjoy reading. I cannot wait for Kim's next.

Kim Rogers exhibits a magnetic writing style and a commendable story for her first novel. One is transcended into the lush, energetic, youthful years of discovering adult through Angelina. Her desires create internal conflict and her actions continually weave in the complexities of other characters. One cannot help reflect on one's own past personal experiences. I can't wait to read Kim's next novel.

In this descriptive and beautifully written novel, Kim Rogers narrows in on, and successfully captures, the time immediately following college graduation when a young woman is looking for a direction, inspiration, and love. It's a time in a woman's life -- especially in one which most major decisions have previously been made for her -- when everything seems in flux while she begins the quest of finding her adult soul. Every woman makes decisions during this time that she comes to regret, but without which her growth would not be so remarkable. I reccomend it to all women, whether they want to reflect on those years, or whether they just want a good read in which to submerge themselves. I also reccommend it to anyone who has spent time on Cape Cod -- Rogers does a fantastic job in her writing of putting you right back on a sandy dune on the tip of New England.

This book is an excellent first novel for Kim Rogers. Set in the small Cape town of Provincetown, Kim's lush language sets the scene beautifully and tells a familiar tale of life after College. The story takes you through some unexpected turns, carefully documenting the life of Angelina Moreau, the main characted. I definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a good escape that addresses love, relationships, and our eternal quest to figure this life out.

Gothic comics - An outstanding blend of words and pictures

Review Date: 2005-04-03
Edgar Allan Poe is a natural choice as the first volume of the Graphic Classics volumes, a series partially inspired by the Classic Illustrated collection of comic books, which attempted to lure young readers into reading respectable, "classic" authors through the comics medium. This new incarnation, however, takes an entirely different tact, combining fantastic literary stories with equally talented artists for something that is far more entertainment than education.

Also, while these are "comic books," the illustrators are far more "New Yorker" than "Fantastic Four." Creative, individualistic and highly stylized, each artist leaves their own distinctive mark on their story, creating a unique experience, a collaboration between author and artist.

This 3rd Edition of "Graphic Classics: Volume 1 - Edgar Allan Poe" assembles nine short stories and three poems of the master, including his most famous works as well as some less well-known. Each is given a different treatment, ranging from illustrated text pieces to full comic strips. Each is of very high quality, making this book highly recommended.

Included in this volume are:

"The Tell-Tale Heart" - My first Edgar Allan Poe story, that I was assigned to read in Jr. High School, is still a provocative and powerful piece. Artist Rick Geary gives us a straight-forward rendition, including a lovingly detailed picture of The Eye.

"King Pest" - A story of plague-ridden London, where two hapless sailors find themselves guests at the table of the King and Queen of pestilence. Anton Emdin's grotesque illustrations add a nice comic flair to the tale.

"The Premature Burial" - A claustrophobic tale of fear of premature burial, and how we often create the demon's that haunt us. Joe Ollman does a splendid job of creating atmosphere, and the panic of being buried alive.

"El Dorado" - This one I liked a lot. A semi-humorous cartoons style brings the point of the sad poem home even more fiercely.

"Spirits of the Dead" - A surrealistic adaptation of a quiet Poe poem, ruminating on death.

"The Imp of the Perverse" - Like "The Tell-tale Heart," a story of the sting of guilt, and how a perfect murder is never as perfect as we would like to think.

"The Raven" - A new adaptation of Poe's masterpiece, this is an assemble version with a different artist doing a different stanza. It comes off beautifully, allowing Poe's words to be the true star of the show.

"The Masque of the Red Death" - A text-and-pictures adaptation, full of the stunning delights of Propero's hidden Bohemia, and the plague of the Red Death that intrudes on their party.

"Never Bet the Devil Your Head" - A wild and funny adaptation of a wild and funny story. An excellent ending.

"Hop-Frog" - The text is presented in its entirety, and the artists is so completely well-suited to this story that I think I will forever see the foolish fat king and his eight fat friends as portrayed by artist Lisa K. Weber.

"The Cask of Amontillado" - My favorite Poe story is well treated, keeping the essential dialog and tension, even while being distilled down to a few pages.

"The Fall of the House of Usher" - Mostly a text-and-pictures piece with some dialog, the artist captures the haunted Roderic Usher's lonely fate. As well as his sisters'.

Edgar Allan Poe Graphic Classics

Okay, I get the point. Having read all of Tom Pompluns' classic compilations, I have often thought `Why not get mainstream artists? I'm sure John Byrne would do one for him? Hey, Steranko? What about Wiacek? Or Perez?'. But, call me slow, this collection of stories has opened the door.

The tales he has chosen to adapt, and the artists he has assigned the work to, work. Why? In a twisted way, the sheer esoteric nature of the Poe, Twain, Stevenson, Doyle, Bierce, and Lovecraft stories match the highly stylized artwork from Geary, Weber, Howarth, Knight, Shaw and others. Put a story like King Pest into the hands of Frank Brunner, and you have a masterful piece, that may miss the off mark. Brunner is fantasy. Pest is satire, at its' best. Neal Adams doing the Cask of Amontilado would be a visual feast, but the art would overshadow the terror of the story. Some of the art in this volume does not necessarily make the tale sing, but it does put the onus onto the writer and as a team, it either does, or does not work.

Most of these work. This volume includes The Premature Burial, Imp of the Perverse, King Pest, The Tell Tale Heart, Masque of the Red Death, Hop Frog, Never Bet the Devil Your Head, Cask of Amontilado, Fall of the House of Usher, and the Raven. A couple of these are reprints but 40 of the 144 pages are new. Because of the new material, the book has a `new' feel to it.

Of the stories here, I had never heard of half of them. King Pest is a hoot. Hop Frog is delightful. The Imp of the Perverse is perverse. And the Premature Burial is masterful. Material from a genius like Poe should never be forgotten.

What the heck Tom, I bet Steranko would do a cover!!

Compiled and edited by Tom Pomplun, Graphic Classics: Edgar Allan Poe is an outstanding graphic novel anthology of diverse comic-book style adaptations of classic stories and poems by the legendary Edgar Allan Poe. Included are "The Raven", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Tell-Tale Heart", and nine others. Each black-and-white rendition is by a different artist, and the styles range from gruesomely realistic to extravagantly bizarre; all of them deftly capture Poe's brilliant and sometimes shocking dialogue, plots, and the helplessness of man. Also very highly recommended from their "Graphic Classics" series are the Eureka Productions graphic novel editions of H.P. Lovecraft (0971246440); Ambrose Bierce (0971246467); and Bram Stoker (0971246475).

This book is wonderfully written and well researched (many of the locales are familiar to me as an Austin resident). It has all the elements of a great story -- adventure, danger, intrigue, romance -- while remaining realistic and wholesome. My 9-year-old daughter has already read it twice!

Fourteen-year-old Hallie Lou Wells is the daughter of a wealthy rancher in South Texas in 1878. At their mother's insistence, Hallie and her little sister are learning to be proper young ladies. But they are also learning how to run the ranch someday. When her father decides not to go on the annual cattle drive so that he can stay home with his pregnant wife, Hallie persuades him to let her go in his place, along with her servant and best friend, Dovey Mae. Along the trail, the two girls face the dangers of rattlesnakes, storms, river crossing, hostile Indians, outlaws, and illness. But Hallie becomes a braver, stronger person, and even experiences the joy of love. Told through the form of a diary kept by Hallie, this book was very similar to the Dear America series, and I would reccomend it to all fans of that series.

I used this anthology in the late 1990's for a course I was teaching in the history of modern philosophy. I will be teaching the same course in the Spring of 2009 and I will be using the same textbook. It is comprehensive. And students will appreciate the fact that it is relatively inexpensive. Hackett does it again!

Great excerpts, good format, good reading.

Modern Philosophy -- full of writings from philosophers such as Locke, Kant or Spinoza -- can be seen as a daunting period of philosophy. I read this book as a text for a modern philosophy class, and found that it is a very competant editing of these difficult texts. The anthology begins with "premodern" writings of Galileo and others, goes through Descartes (with a selection of criticisms of Decartes' work from his contemporaries), and then goes through the work of other modern philosophers such as Locke, Berkeley, Spinoza, Libeniz, Kant, and others. The editor does a wonderful job arranging texts to illustrate the back and forth dialog and critisms among the philosophers. In addition to the selection of texts, there are wonderful notes scattered throughout the text to help alleviate much of the confusion that can arise after reading some of the quite lengthly writings of some (many! ) modern philosophers. Perhaps on an aesthetic (non-content) sidenote -- the book itself is excellent. When I was reading a section, I did not have to worry about pages flipping on me, because the binding is very flexible. In addition highlighters don't bleed through the page -- a wonderful plus to a great anthology! I would highly recommend it.

Roger Remington has written a fascinating survey of American graphic design and I enjoyed looking at the dozens of illustrations especially those from the late fifties onwards when I was familiar with the work of so many American designers. The work of Otto Storch on McCall's, Lou Dorfsman at CBS and naturally the typography of Herb Lubalin was a strong influence on my work as a publication designer.

The author writes about the development of Modernism in Europe and how it spread to the US with the arrival of many European graphic designers escaping the oppression in Europe during the Thirties. In America they found a receptive country open to new ways of designing for print, which flowered, with the explosion of creativity in the Fifties and Sixties. On page 179 there is a list of many great designers, whose work is the basis of this book, who have died and Remington rightly says that their absence denies emerging young designers creative role models.

The design of the book is first-class (a tip of the hat to Brad Yendle) the images are well selected with a good mix of posters, advertisements, corporate graphics, magazine covers and logos. I would have preferred to see more magazine spreads and at least one example of the amazing 'Upper & Lower Case' publication. All the illustrations have good long explanatory captions.

If you are involved with commercial graphic design and want to learn about its history in America this book can't be beat. I mentioned earlier two designers whose work I love and the following two books are well worth searching out, 'Dorfsman & CBS' by Dick Hess and Marion Muller, 'Herb Lubalin' by Gertrude Snyder and Alan Peckolick. The book that really got me interested in expressive typography and I still think is valid in this digital age is 'Typography' by Aaron Burns, published in 1961.

As a 4th grade Lang. Arts/Social Studies teacher in Texas, I'm always on the lookout for picture books I can use across the curriculum and that are thought-provoking. Little did I realize that this book would be so enjoyable. The children loved it, as did I. The vocabulary suits the 4th-5th grade, inferencing abounds, and there is plenty of information so students can really take the text and relate it to themselves, another book, or the world around them! The reader response project the students did afterward yielded some of the most creative work ever! This would suit any number of topics -- Women's Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Texas Independence, Compare/Contrast (w/ Legend of Bluebonnet), freedom fighters, immigration and the settling of the old West, and many others. There are even some parallels to stories from the Bible that my students recognized. Great way to broach the subject and sensitively handle a discussion of current events relating to legal and illegal immigration.

Hope you enjoy this as much as we did!

This is a short book; I wished for a few more chapters. But this little volume packs a lot into its pages.

Topics range from theology to very practical things. I especially enjoyed the chapters on building intimacy (Jim Pettitt) and the seven commitments of a marriage (David and Lisa Frisbie). Those chapters alone are worth the price of this book --- but every chapter is useful, helpful, well-written.

Great book for pastors and marriage counselors --- excellent reading for couples planning to marry. Five stars!
