I had not seen this movie, but I was so glad that I bought it. It was wonderful!!!!!

I found this movie utterly predictable and Dennis Hopper's performance as the town drunk only tolerable. Gene Hackman is the new high school basketball coach in basketball crazy Hickory, Indiana in 1951. He is a man with a past, although it is not as dark as it initially appears. Hopper plays Shooter, the town drunk whose son is on the seven man team. Despite his sodden brain, Shooter has a superb understanding of the game and Hackman selects him to be his assistant coach. You know immediately that Shooter is going to sober up and become a real coach. The scenes where Hackman is thrown out of the game and Shooter must take over are forced and unrealistic; Hopper is unconvincing as a person stressed out over the combination of alcohol withdrawal and having to take charge.
Even the scene when Hackman is attending a town meeting where the purpose is to decide whether he should be fired lacks a great deal of tension. It is not out of the apparent politeness of the townspeople, there is a lack of passion among all participants. This is supposed to be a town passionate about basketball and a coach passionate about the game.
I was bored throughout the entire movie and struggled to watch it through to the end.

Love this movie! I love the flavor of Indiana more than anything. Visited that state and the area they speak of many times in my youth. Great inspirational story. Just a quick note...a joke is lost in the subtitles mid-way through the semi-national game. After being fouled out of the game, Coach glares at his player, for which the subtitles read "It was for the team". The line is actually "it was Dentyne", throwing back a joke Coach said in an earlier huddle. Being deaf helps with these things! Amazing movie still.

I don't know how I missed this film when it came out in 1986. It is a story of a middle-aged basketball coach and his last chance for redemption. It is suppose to be loosely based on a true story (whatever that means). Gene Hackman does a great job as the coach with Dennis Hopper as a supporting actor.

Of course every body knows that all Indiana boys play basketball, just nail a basket to the side of a barn and start shooting, right? Unfortunately basketball is more than simply shooting the ball through a goal.

The movie is set in Indiana in 1951, a little before my time as a high school basketball player. It does raise some questions with me such as how much difference can a coach make at the high school level? Mine made all the difference in the world, but I was fortunate to have Coach Jerry Wayne Shelton. I suspect they can make less of a difference at the colligate level.

Highly recommended for any one who played high school basketball.

I haven't seen this in over 20 years and was thrilled to stumble across a VHS copy of it. Candy and Levy really shine with Flaherty playing a solid Second City back-up. Really funny stuff, despite being dated. Just good old fashioned silly and fun. Sad to have lost Candy so young. He was an all time great. Any John Candy fan should own this film!!!

I dare anyone to keep a straight face throughout this movie!

As one who has seen all of John's work, I was flabbergasted to find this film at, or near the bottom of his film's popularity list. I can only attribute this awsome oversight to the fact that it hasn't been released on DVD. Why? Perhaps the 1984 release date? Or could it be a conspiracy by some "Anti-Candy-ite"? Who knows.

I am one who seldom, if ever, cares to see a film more than once, regardless of how great it might be, but "Going Berserk" changed all that. This non-stop roller coaster ride thru the most bizzare mis-adventure ever to befall human kind, is one I can't get enough of!

I daresay that if ya can't get it on DVD, Buy the VHS, and use that as an excuse to buy a DVD recorder as well!

Although somewhat dated, this is a hilarious film and one of John Candy's best. It is nonstop, madcap humor and slapstick with some funny sexual situations thrown in for good measure. Who can forget the twisted "Father Knows Best" sequences shown to brainwash John Candy's character against his father-in-law Ed Reese? Another memorable and hilarious character is Mohammed Jerome Willy, outlaw, who meets a rather unusual but stimulating demise.

Featuring a stellar cast, this is one movie you'll enjoy watching over and over again.

If you are lucky enough, also record it on TV--there was a different version made for television (cleaned up, of course), but the TV version features different scenes from the theatrical release.

One of my favorite comedies ever! The SCTV guys are great!!!

This early John Candy masterpiece is two hours of solid laughter. Ignore the silly plot. The main character (Candy) just goes from one improbable situation to a more improbable one. And they're well-written: You can't really predict what will happen (at least, not the first viewing...). If you like SNL, then this is the equivalent of two hours of SNL-like skits. You just keep laughing. John Candy is magnificent.

The Success of Robert Fitzgibbons is a real delight-an authentic tale in which the ingenuity and subtle humor bring this character to life. The text and clever drawings make readers want to know this boy, Robert Fitzgibbons and his creator, Eric Blank. Through Robert's life lessons, he learns that dreams can be realized at his own pace! Used as a read-aloud or to teach voice and style, this book is a must have for any classroom library.

"The Success of Robert Fitzgibbons" is the fictional tale of a very good kid who follows the wishes of his parents and people around him and later comes to regret not following his own dreams. Robert was good at sports, won spelling bees, got all A's in school, and always obeyed his parents. One thing Robert really loved was playing his guitar, but he quit when someone told him it would not take him far. He went to college and studied hard because his parents wanted him to. All the while he was wishing he could be playing the guitar in his buddy Ernie's band. As he grew older he began to wish that he had followed his dreams instead of doing what other people said he should do.

This picture book is very pleasing to read because of the rhythm and the rhyme. It is silly and the full-page illustrations are lively, too. I liked how he expressed Robert's feelings of being trapped when he wrote, "I want to jump in a lake or climb up a tree, not spend all day doing geometry." I think most kids can relate to this feeling!

While the purpose of this book is to get the reader to follow his or her dreams, some readers might think that following a dream means doing exactly what you want, whenever you want, ignoring good advice. I think that Robert Fitzgibbons could have followed his dream to play his guitar in a band and gone to college, too. The author does well to encourage the reader to not "march to the beat of someone else's drummer, because not doing what you want makes life a real bummer." I'm not sure if "The Success of Robert Fitzgibbons" is more likely to get kids to follow their dreams or to tell their moms that they aren't going to do any more schoolwork.

Too many of us have had our dreams dashed by the authority figures in our lives. We have been told our dreams are stupid or silly, so we stop pursuing them. Eric helps us to see that we can follow our dreams at any age. This is a great book for building children's self-esteem, which is so needed in today's world. I wish there had been books like this when my children were small.

I have two children (ages 3 and 4) and find there are surprisingly few books that they enjoy listening, I enjoy reading and that have good lessons.

This story let's children (and reminds parents) to let children follow their own dreams versus the expectations of others.

I look forward to future books about Robert Fitzgibbons.

Other favorite books for reference are Ms. Twiggley's Tree House, How the Jester Lost his Jingle, The Gardener, Andrew Henry's Meadow.

My three children recieved signed copies of this book from their favorite aunt, my sister. After reading one of the copies while waiting in the doctor's office I was pleasantly reminded that we need to follow our hearts. The need to remind adults to instill this process in our children is certainly accomplished in this captivating book.

This book was a tragic, candid look at the lives of everyday soldiers caught up in a hellish conflict. This reality is so unimaginable for my generation today, yet these men confronted it with honor and dignity. The author's affection and admiration for his companions makes his memoir both powerful and moving.

Robert Peterson takes you with him as he recounts his experiences as a GI in Vietnam. Peterson paints a vivid picture of what life was really like in the Nam. The hell of marching day after day, fighting the elements while searching for the elusive VC. Never knowing where you'll be heading to next. Forming bonds stronger than blood and then watching those men die, and then getting up to do it all over again the next day. It was a real eye opener for me, fighting in Vietnam was nothing like I expected, not like the movies at all. It all seemed so pointless. The more you read the darker it gets.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I took it everywhere I went and I had trouble putting it down. Robert Peterson was an amazing writer and Rites of Passage was an amazing book.

peterson's daily account of his vietnam experience is meticulously described,providing a view of his metamorphosis from an average midwestern farm boy to combat-weary grunt that is brilliant. reads more like a novel in the sense that the character in the first few chapters could not even fathom the feelings,thoughts, and experiences of the character at the end.
also provides compelling illustrations of the frustrations and inner conflicts felt by an average american required to follow orders which he is morally opposed to and intuitively wary of.
the book grows darker by the page and the reader is drawn into his sense of impending doom and constant fear.
i highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the vietnam war.

An incredibly detailed, truthful, moving, and painful personal account of war as experienced by a front line soldier in the Vietnam War.
This book was obviously written from extensive notes taken by the author when he had the time in the field to write down his feelings and experiences. For reasons of his own, the book was not published until after his death in April 1994.
This book will have immense meaning to anyone who has experienced the hell of war, as well as, anyone who wishes to understand the sacrifices our fighting men and women in battle must endure. President Bush and his top advisors should read this book before they send our treasured youth to fight another war. If those in positions of highest political authority, after reading Sgt. Peterson's war memoir, still decide we must go to war then they will understand we must fight the war to the finish with the best military tactics and strategies available not hindered and defined by vague political considerations.
I recommend this book to all. I sincerely thank Mr. and Mrs. Peterson for their service to our country.

SSgt. Robert Peterson returned from Vietnam a paraplegic, having had his spinal cord severed by friendly fire from Spooky, a gunship "spewing out thousands of rounds per minute" from mini-Gatling guns. The detail of description and dialogue here is amazing, and it would have been helpful if, in the prologue or forward, mention had been made of how Peterson could have recalled it all so vividly. The author mentions a diary he kept, but it is uncertain whether he wrote in it every day.

This reader experienced a sort of approach/avoidance conflict whenever time permitted his picking the book up again and continuing it. A foreboding doom threads in and out of the narrative, although it does not dominate it. The overall mood is rather dark, and you know that the more you read, the deeper you head into a tunnel with no light at the end. Peterson seems to have lacked a solid hold on a personal philosophy that might have lessened the depression and pessimism that weighed so heavily upon him as he trudged through the jungle and on the trails with the 25th Infantry Division's 1st Battalion, 14th Regiment. He believes in God but is unsure about God's nature, purpose, or design in this world turned-upside-down by war. Such a tentative hold on a world view, I believe, makes Peterson extra-vulnerable to the demons that can haunt an infantryman from witnessing the horrific tragedies that are bound to occur in wartime. Although I did not serve in a line company like Peterson, it was faith in God and a solid understanding of my Christian beliefs that got me through my tour in Vietnam. Such a foundation, whether it be religion or ideology, can radically alter the way you interpret events and how they impact you.

Nevertheless, Peterson does find a kind of tragic salvation in booze and in erecting a protective shield around his psyche that detaches him from the carnage and apparent meaningless of the war. He rightly criticizes the Army's tactics in executing a conventional war against an elusive and wily guerilla army, whose sanctuaries across the border remain insanely off-limits. Peterson repeatedly longs to fight the enemy on his own terms, and believes that America was just spinning its wheels in Nam by not taking the war to the sanctuaries and to North Vietnamese soil. He is, therefore, understandably demoralized by an appalling lack of vision among the military and civilian leadership.

There is plenty of action here, and when there isn't, the narrative still holds your interest as you get to know and love soldiers like Nuckols, Alabama, Vickers, Underhill, and many others. You care for these men and find yourself pulling for them. Thus, you learn about the camaraderie that bonds the men and motivates them to fight.

Peterson rose quickly through the ranks to become a staff sergeant. He was a good soldier, and his platoon sergeant and company CO's recognized him as such. More than anything, Peterson was a patriot who, when his country called (he was drafted), did his duty with honor, fortitude, and valor. It is a valuable book for those interested in delving into the life of the lowly grunt in Vietnam. Perhaps more fascinating to me is the psychological study of men at war that Peterson's raw narrative provides.

These are two of the best.I love these movies.They are both movies that make you feel good.I will watch them again and again.Nothing is better than watching a great romantic movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed both movies, I had seen Fools Rush in many years ago, but had never seen Maid in America. I would highly recommend this combo to anyone, both movies are very good in my opinion.

MAID IN MANHATTAN ***

This is a relatively pleasant, though eminently forgettable, once-upon- a-time romantic comedy. Not even its excellent supporting cast can make this tepid movie better than it should be. Ralph Fiennes, with his sometimes British, sometimes American accent, and Jennifer Lopez, with her beauty marred the minute she opens her mouth, are the would be mis-matched lovers.

Fiennes plays Chris Marshall, a wealthy, to the manor born, silver spoon, political candidate. Lopez plays Marissa Ventura, a working class woman and single parent with an adorable, precocious, ten year old son named Ty (Tyler Garcia Posey). Marissa works as a maid in the posh hotel in which Marshall is a guest. When her son accompanies her to work one day, he runs into Chris Marshall and recognizes him. They start up a conversation and before you know it they are going to go off for a walk together, only Ty has to ask his mom. They go to the suite in which she is cleaning, only thing is that she has tried one of the haute couture outfits belonging to a wealthy businesswoman named Caroline who is staying in the suite.

Naturally, Marissa looks gorgeous in this outfit and is wearing it when Ty and Chris enter the suite. Chris is smitten, and all three go for a walk in the park. Chris does not know, and Marissa does not disclose, that she is one of the maids in the hotel. Don't ask. Don't tell.

When Chris, thinking that his dream woman's name is Caroline, forwards an invitation for lunch to her ostensible suite, the real Caroline (Natasha Richardson) responds. Let the games begin! Marissa spends quite a bit if time avoiding running into Chris in her work clothes. When she finally runs into him in the street, Chris instructs his aide to find her and invite her to a glittering soiree. She gets the invitation via the hotel butler (Bob Hoskins), along with some advice, and decides to go for the gold. With her fellow employees at the hotel acting as collective fairy godmothers, she gets the proverbial ball gown, diamonds, makeover, and emerges a princess, making a dramatic entrance at the ball, further entrancing Chris. When she runs off before the ball is over, he pursues her, and what then follows is a night to remember.

Of course, Natasha, who is also at the ball, sees Marissa and Chris together and realizes that she looks familiar. Consumed by the green eyed monster, she contacts the hotel authorities when the morning after the ball she sees Marissa, exiting the suite occupied by Chris and still wearing the diamond necklace she wore at the ball. A review of security tapes leads to her identification of Marissa and a host of other things. Chris is now faced with a choice, as is Marissa.

The film is pretty formulaic in that it is filmed as a fairy tale. Of course it has the proverbial happy ending. The film is saved by the very funny performance of Natasha Richardson and her pre-menopausal, obnoxious friend played with relish and delicious abandon by Amy Sedaris. Stanley Tucci is excellent as Jerry, Chris Marshall's campaign manager. Bob Hoskins is very good as the prim and proper hotel butler, though the film strikes a false note towards the end when he gives Marissa a final speech that is ridiculous. Tyler Garcia Posey is a totally adorable child actor who gives a very natural and engaging performance.

Ralph Fiennes gives a decent performance but has difficulty maintaining an American accent. Jennifer Lopez gives a better performance than she usually does but that is not saying a lot. It is unfortunate that to date she has been unable to replicate the level of performance that she gave in "Selena", the film that propelled her into stardom. She is, however, totally drop dead gorgeous when she is all gussied up, looking every inch the princess.

Still, if one's expectations are not too high, one should find this to be a mildly entertaining, romantic comedy. Rent it rather than buy it.


FOOLS RUSH IN ****

This is a delightful romantic comedy. Matthew Perry is a charming, self-effacing leading man. Salma Hayek is a most fetching and winsome leading lady. Strong performances by the supporting cast help make this a most enjoyable movie.

Alex Whitman (Matthew Perry) lives in New York and has a high powered job as a field agent for a builder that specializes in the construction of night clubs. He is sent to Las Vegas to supervise new construction. While there, he meets a fiery, latin beaty, Isabel Fuentes (Salma Hayek), with whom he has a very memorable one night stand. This is totally out of character for both of them. In fact, she is so embarrassed by what happened, that she sneaks out of his house first thing in the morning. Before he even knows it, she is gone, never to be heard from again, until she shows up on his door step three months later to announce that she is pregnant with his baby.

Alex tells her that he supports her right to choose. Isabel chooses to have the baby. She asks nothing from him other than he meet her family, so that it is not such a shock when she announces that she is pregnant. He agrees to do so. He meets her traditional, Mexican-American family and is taken by their warmth, a quality that is sorely lacking in his family. He rarely sees his own family, except for the obligatory holidays, while Isabel meets hers once a week for dinner.

Alex and Isabel fall in love and have a quickie marriage ceremony performed in Las Vegas. Naturally, as they are now husband and wife. they move in together. Then reality sets in. They contend with cultural difference, with pain in the you know what in-laws, and with the every day adjustments necessary, when living with someone one does not, as yet, know. Then, the trust that had developed is violated, and they each go their own separate ways.

What happens with the baby? Does the marriage survive? Watch the movie and find out. The experience will be an enjoyable one.

These are two of the best.I love these movies.They are both movies that make you feel good.I will watch them again and again.Nothing is better than watching a great romantic movie.

He is sent to Las Vegas to supervise new construction. While there, he meets a fiery, latin beaty, Isabel Fuentes (Salma Hayek), with whom he has a very memorable one night stand. This is totally out of character for both of them. In fact, she is so embarrassed by what happened, that she sneaks out of his house first thing in the morning. Before he even knows it, she is gone, never to be heard from again, until she shows up on his door step three months later to announce that she is pregnant with his baby.

Alex tells her that he supports her right to choose. Isabel chooses to have the baby. She asks nothing from him other than he meet her family, so that it is not such a shock when she announces that she is pregnant. He agrees to do so. He meets her traditional, Mexican-American family and is taken by their warmth, a quality that is sorely lacking in his family. He rarely sees his own family, except for the obligatory holidays, while Isabel meets hers once a week for dinner.

Alex and Isabel fall in love and have a quickie marriage ceremony performed in Las Vegas. Naturally, as they are now husband and wife. they move in together. Then reality sets in. They contend with cultural difference, with pain in the you know what in-laws, and with the every day adjustments necessary, when living with someone one does not, as yet, know. Then, the trust that had developed is violated, and they each go their own separate ways.

What happens with the baby? Does the marriage survive? Watch the movie and find out. The experience will be an enjoyable one.

This book is very well written and interesting, discussing neuropharmocology from molecular, cellular, and biochemical bases as well as physiologically and socially.

Great review of neuroscience from the pharmacological viewpoint. Thorough, systematic explanations of neurotransmitter systems up to higher brain functions. Highlights drugs that affect each system in the text. Begins with basic review of pharmacology and neuroscience for those who don't have solid footing there. Language is clear and easy to read, contains main points on first page of each chapter and selected reading at the end.

Anyone who wants an understanding of how the brain works at the molecular level should read this excellent, succinct text. I recommend it to anesthesiologists in particular since we parctice in brain-neuropharmacology daily.

This book is well organized, well written, and very informative. If you're interested in neuropharmacology, you should definitely get this book.

I've seen all the seasons of monk that are out on DVD (1-5) and I LOVE them! I've not seen all of this season but I did buy Mr. Monk is On the Run Parts 1 and 2 and in my opinion, it is the BEST Monk EVER! Definitely worth the $2 per episode!

This is a phenomenal episode. It has everything you expect from a great Monk plus a kicker. Don't let anyone spoil this for you. It's a real treat. One nit-pick, I get a laugh out of them trying to pass off Los Angeles as San Francisco!

Some excellent episodes in season 6 as always. Shalhoub keeps improving on his role adding more depth to a obviously still self-consumed Monk. Kudos to the 3 main supporting actors also. Quality of the downloads is very good. No glitches when switching PC's and and downloading again.

I loved seeing Sarah Silverman again playing Marci Maven. She happens to find Monk again and this time she's in trouble! Monk agrees to handle her case which leads to a hilarious adventure. Marci's obsession with Monk makes this episode a must-see!

This is a charming book to be enjoyed by all;young children, who will enjoy having this read to them, to aspiring artists, to older fans. Early work of these illustrators and pictures of some of them as children along with their stories give a picture of their development.This may also offer an introduction to new books and illustrators. Great for teachers and librarians when presenting a story.

This a wonderful book for inspiring budding young artists. Wonderfully illustrated with examples from all the artists (including fold-outs). A great way to learn about their lives and work.

I purchased this book for my 18 year old daughter, who is off to college next year to major in art. Her ambition is to be an illustrator, so I thought it would be inspirational for her. She loves that it features the illustrators of many of her favorite books from when she was small. A great book for anyone who enjoys illustration and picture books.
