Audiences speak back to the screen
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-04
This book explores the meaning and effect of movies on American audiences since 1948. Author Tom Stempel, film historian and cinema professor, researched the book by personal observations of audiences, by studying Box Office results and with a questionnaire on what audiences think and feel.

His moviegoers describe their earliest and most memorable experiences. Just as Hollywood often holds up a mirror to our society, Tom Stempel allows the audience to hold up a mirror to Hollywood.

After Psycho, no one felt comfortable in the shower. After Jaws, many people were afraid to swim in the ocean. The Exorcist scared everyone. In their own words people tell how Hollywood films helped them form and transform their personal concepts of reality and examine the meaning of their lives:

"Easy Rider was a statement of our generation. Getting on motorcycles and just riding around the country with long hair flowing in the wind was what I and so many others wanted to do."Ira Katz

"My father took me and my sisters to see The Apple Dumpling Gang. I had never seen my father happier" Angela West

"It was like some kind of religious ritual initiation...as if she were bringing me into a new secret world where special knowledge and power would be passed on from her to me." Peggy Dillery, seeing Cleopatra with her Grandmother

"The Ten Commandments had a pretty big influence on the shaping of my religious view," T. Taylor

"It was in a movie theatre that I kissed my first girl, felt my first breast, and had my first mutual touching below the waist..." Brad Long

American Audiences on movies and MovieGoing shows how movies change audiences'lives and how New Lifestyles change the movies. It reminds us how Hollywood sees itself as the heart of America.

This easy to read, well researched, entertaining book will appeal to professional moviemakers as well as the average moviegoer

About the human side of "going to the movies"

Review Date: 2001-05-23
Tom Stempel is professor of Cinema at Los Angeles City College and draws upon his considerable expertise to examine the complex relationship between the audience and the movies. In addition to examining box office statistics, Stempel surveyed more than 150 moviegoers about the human side of "going to the movies", and the public side of movies as distinct and separate from critics or directors perceptions on the film industry. Stempel notes the viewers' varied responses and personal recollections to some of the great classics of film as he looks at each of the great eras of movie making from the glory days of studio dominance in the 1940s through the bleak years studio system collapse in competition with the advent of television, to the rise and diversity of the independent and contemporary film makers of today. American Audiences On Movies And Moviegoing is very highly recommended and unique reading for students of film history and American popular culture.

AFI Catalogs are the Greatest!

I have the AFI's 1931-1940 Catalogs set. I have also been an AFI member for 4 years. The catalogs are for any serious film buff! You can literally find any American actor or actress in movies you never knew that person played in. The researchers have watched the films or read the production notes and found so many unbilled extras that later became famous. I look forward to the volumes 1941-1950 which I just ordered. The wealth of knowledge is AMAZING!

One of a kind! Nothing else comes close!!

This AFI Catalog is an absolute must for the serious film student, movie buff or collector. The first two volumes contain an alphabetical listing of every single feature film produced in the United States from 1931-1940. All the information you could need to know is given for each film. Everything is included: production dates, studio, director, producer, cinematographer, screenwriter, the entire cast, a brief synopsis of the film, production notes, genre, subjects and more. Nothing is left out. The third volume contains an extremely extensive index. Every personality, studio, subject and even shooting location is methodically indexed. It costs a pretty penny but is well worth it. It is truly one of a kind. Nothing else comes close!

I saw it, and I knew that I just HAD to get it. It has very nice pictures inside, and enough room to write my own personal journal. So far I'm already half way through writing in it. The hard cover protects the things inside, and I like that also. The things they write for Anakin's thoughts are interresting too. It's a very nice journal, and if you like Star Wars, you'll LOVE this.

Annie is about an orphan who gets to live with Oliver Warbucks for a week.At first Oliver didn't like Annie, but by the last day Warbucks realized he loved Annie.Oliver told Annie he was going to adopt her and she said ,"I can't be your little girl , because my parents promised to come back for me." Oliver started a seach for Annie's parents. One night a man came and said he was Annies father. After showing evidence ,Annie left with him. When he tried to kill Annie, Punjab, Olivers servant, saved her and she lived very happy with Oliver Warbucks. I gave Annie a ten becouse I thought this is a wonderful , fun book.It has adventure, excitement, and danger.

What can I say? This is a good book!

Review Date: 2001-02-04
This book is really good, but unfortunately I found a few misprints. But, then again, every book has misprints, so I shouldn't be so nit-picky. Also, I noticed something: in this book, Lugia said, "You, who recovered the two treasures, are our best hope," when it's saying that Ash is the Chosen One. But wait! In the movie, Lugia said that only with the help of the true Chosen One (Ash), would the Ice Sphere glow brightly like the other two. So I think they took that particular sentence in the book from the Japanese version of this movie. Also, about those weird drawings on page 44 . . . who drew them? The reason I'm not giving this book less than five stars is because it answered a lot of my questions. I hate to admit, but I didn't really understand the real reason that Moltres and Zapdos were attacking each other in Lawrence's airship. And that's just one example. There were a lot of other things I was sort of confused about that this book explained. Last note: this book tells you the name of the Pokemon collector! Lawrence III! But why doesn't the elderly man (you know, the one who told Ash that the festival was just for the tourists) have a name?

Perfect for Lugia/Pokemon Lovers!

This book of art from the Pokemon 2000 (Revelation Lugia) movie is wonderful, to say the least. I was greatly impressed, it easily surpassed my expectations. Though the art is fantastic and plentiful, some of the most noteable features is information; the book gives a nice synopsis of the film and the short that was played with it, as well as a nifty little Pokedex for the new Pokemon featured in the movie. It's a great addition to any Pokefan's collection! I highly recommend this one.

A book that motivates you to fill your sketchbook with subjects you can find all around you.

Included are recommendations for sketching materials and even instructions for making your own sketchbook.

The book is filled with sketches and the techniques used. Tips are also scattered throughout. Topics covered: people, animals and birds, the interior, landscape and architecture.

Fabulous Artist

Albany is a wonderful artist, the book description is accurate, but doesn't tell you how good this guy really is. Not only does he demonstrate various techniques, his sketches and drawings are truly masterful and provide tremendous inspiration for where you can go as an artist or illustrator. This is another book I use for examples to provide my students and as a guide for myself in my own sketchbook journals.
