Management By Vice is full of razor-sharp, satiric humor. You'll find no boring, longwinded analyses of the characters and the fictitious Company's history, though there is enough exposure of human nature to fill a work psychology manual! I like the way the book stays focused on a series of sprightly, humorous episodes, which show various aspects of interactions between managers and technical staff. I have seen and experienced them in the workplace for many years, so I fully agree that Management By Vice is in every way a true-to-life rendition of what takes place in many companies. The writing style is appealing too with witty, short verses that relect the content of each episode. Management By Vice is head and shoulders above the 1st grade reading primer level of many unrealistic, silly humor books about management and the workplace. The repartee between the characters, such as the managers and technical staff, is also very real and entertaining. What can be done about the less-than-satisfactory management described in The Company? Any bright reader will see this type of management must be replaced for the sake of The Company's survival. Most of the satiritical episodes in CB Don's book entitled " Management by Vice" are quite familiar scenes in both commercial and government settings. "Gettting ahead" at the expense of one's integrity as well as colleagues' future is the only means for some people. Greed often blinds ambitious management. A quick promotion and fat bonouses are the driving forces for these managers. Hence, short-term goals, say 3 to 5 years, are all thay care about at present, regardless of the future of the organization. Cooperation mergers are too common a way to survive and getting ahead than collisons on the highway, and lay-off is only a part of the evolutionary process, in the commercial world, where survival of those who are most vocal, but are deficient in both technical skills and vision, seems to be the rule. I thoroughly enjoyed reading CB Don's book. It is humorous, yet candid. I highly recommend it to the current managers and those who are old enough to drink....

Mr. R. K. MSc., Supervisory Civil Engineer, from Michigan, USA.
I find this to be a most delightful book. If you have ever worked in an office, design or R&D outfit, you can really relate to the adventures portrayed therein. I spent 35 years in the egg-laying part of the duck and found the barbed lampoons a titillating reflection of my own adventures. There's also a pleasant sprinkling of cartoons and verse the summarize each fo the 11 episodes. The heroine survives a cliffhanger for those of you that relish a bit of adventure. It's one of those "once you pick it up, you can't put it down" pieces that are a fast read and leave you satisfied like a good pastrami sandwich. For you managers, the Scots have an appropriate saying, "would some power the great giver give us to see ourselves as others see us". Give it a go!!

Its a sarcastic view of management from the point of R&D scientists. From the point of view of the R&D scientists you get to see some of the underhanded and self serving behavior of incompetent management at the fictional company and how it is tolerated by senior members of management. Unfortunately the book does not explore how "The Company" which was once an R&D powerhouse, got to be in this dysfunctional state. Also the book offers very little hope for dealing with a company in this type of state, short of the company being acquired or getting lucky and having unintended benefits during a passive/aggressive power struggle amongst management. If you were attracted to reading this book by the title "Management by Vice" I would recommend skipping this one and instead read The Below-the-Belt Manager by Eric Broder which I found to be more Humorous than this book.

I just started reading this book and I am very pleased. My husband and I are starting a new church and I think everyone should read this book even if you think you're not an emotional person. This gives you very good insight on both points of views and I believe it will be beneficial to anyone that reads this book.

And this is exactly what you learn how to do in this book. I found it to be extremely practical and helpful, as is Joyce Meyers way of communicating. I did not realize how much I was allowing my emotions to control me rather than the other way around, which I found to be where a majority of my problems stemmed from. This is foundational information.

There were definitely some positive aspects to this book. I should acknolwedge that I've purchased many other Joyce Meyer books such as Battlefield of the Mind, Beauty for Ashes, The Battle Belongs to the Lord, In Pursuit of Peace etc. so sometimes in this book a few sections appear repetitive in accordance with her other works. I believe she copy/pasted from a few other books in some sections.

I was somewhat hesitant to purchase this book after already purchasing Beauty for Ashes which I believe is her best book that she has written. What swayed me in the direction of buying this book was because I saw chapters entitled "Codependency" and "Healing the Child Within" which I was kind of shocked to see in a Christian book. Those are typically secular psychology concepts. I knew she would present those topics in a balanced, scriptural way so I was kind of interested to see how she would approach it. She talked about codependency being dependent on people, behaviors, or things (which is the tradition definition) rather than being dependent on God alone. I did not like anything with regard to codependency because I just viewed it as addictions or idolatry of the Bible. And I came to a realization that it was just not being dependent on God alone like we should, which I was happy to see Joyce agreed with. And "Healing the Child Within" I thought is a dangerous topic because it so conflicts with scripture, but I was surprised in the way she dealt with it. She talked about "becoming as little children" like Jesus said in the Bible. And she talked about all the good attrtibutes of children we should strive after as adults in a very organized way.

These two chapters I don't think taught me anything new however. So, having Beauty for Ashes already (which I would highly recommend) I probably would not prefer to have bought it. Don't get me wrong, if you've never bought a Joyce Meyer book before, this could prove to be a very excellent book as she does cover many topics like in Beauty for Ashes and if it's all unique material for you, this book may be one of the best ones you've bought (besides the Bible). But I believe Beauty for Ashes is more complete and more applicable to my situation.

I think Joyce's two most important works are Battle Belongs to the Lord which discusses the importance of worship and praising God for who He is, and the second one is Beauty for Ashes which talks about abuse and how to deal with negative things others do to you. Battlefield of the Mind is her most popular book, and I think that is quite good to, and should be had more as a reference for times when you find yourself slipping into certain thinking habits.

Sometimes Joyce releases too many books in my opinion (smile) so it's hard for her to find fresh material. Very balanced unique books which I've read so far are Beauty for Ashes, Battlefield of the Mind, and The Battle Belongs to the Lord. They each have unique content which she worked hard on. I'm curious why she felt she wanted to release "Managing Your Emotions" when she already had "Beauty for Ashes" out. I felt if there was a topic unique to Managing Your Emotions which wasn't in Beauty for Ashes, then she should've thought about yet a nother new release revision and added those unique chapters to Beauty for Ashes. Her big thing in this book however was not being led by your emotions in making decisions, but rather by faith and God's input. I acknolwedge that is a unique concept. But her chapters on healing broken emotions and shame and forgiving yourself and others are very similar to Beauty for Ashes, and basically she is simply elaborating and emphasizing Jesus's teaching on the mount! Jesus is the one who revealed this, but I like how she emphasizes it. Hope this helps.

To Serve Man...

Review Date: 2004-02-26
This incredible book reminded me of the old Twilight Zone story where a stranger comes into town with only a book in his hand. He seems to be a wise man because he has unique and interesting ideas. The townsfolk however become worried that the man and his book might come from some alien world. Without even wondering what the book is about, they punish him and the ending is not a good one for the stranger.

In today's world, we all seem afraid of making better changes. We seem afraid of being politically incorrect. If we don't come together soon, we all will have the same fate as the stranger.

This book is like a cookbook. It is filled with simple recipe solutions that will help us in our everyday world. It will allow us to be better people. It will allow us to take control and make us responsible for our actions. I can't think of a more important book...ever. Every single American needs to take a look at the moral and logical solutions that are staring us in the face, a face called RENEW.

I was blown away by the ideas in this book. After listening to all the political pundits and talk show gurus I finally figured out something. And, that is, they don't help us. Oh sure they make us aware of the issues, and sometimes even give us both sides of a topic. I've come to realize however that Rush, Dr. Laura, Hannity, O'Reilly, Savage and the others really just talk about ideas. Maybe that is all America can handle. Maybe that is what we are use to. But, maybe we have never thought about the idea of taking it one step further. There is talk and then there is truly solving the problems. All these wiz kids really don't have a clue. E. R. Marks truly understands the issues, truly understands the process of solving problems and truly understands the action plans to get us there. We all know the issues, we have all heard the topics a million times. Don't you think it is time for America to want to do more than just survive. RENEW can help everyone succeed, and it has everything we need to get us there. Simply Amazing!!

Unlike the millions of so-called solutions before it, RENEW is the most dynamic answer to the problems of this millennium. It doesn't blame any group or individuals for past irresponsibilities and doesn't focus on what we should have done like all the other books out there. It doesn't rant and rave like the big talk shows and TV talk celebrities. It merely gives a do-over with huge results. In a quite profound way, it simply shows us how to succeed in this tough world of ours. There are answers to drugs, marriage, divorce, relationships, smoking, social security, poverty, gambling, guns and so many other issues. But, the answers are so new and so refreshing that you will wonder why no one has ever thought of them before as a collective idea. Today we all need to RENEW.

We need this book more than ever. Our country has gone into a virtual tailspin with major problems, and there seems to be no end in sight. Just look at what has happened recently with the acceptance of gay marriages and families, the obesity of children, the lax sentencing of killers and rapists, the irresponsibility of so-called role models, etc., etc. When will it all end? There is hope however. RENEW is the closest thing to getting America back on track. The author has a vision that clearly identifies moral and logical solutions that everyone should understand and put into motion. Once you start it you won't want to put this book down and once you finish it you will realize that it represents all the possibilities of changing your life for the better. Tell everyone you know to read it. If you pay it forward, we will finally witness a new and RENEWED America.

If you want to know more about the developmental history of the Shuttle program, Jenkins' book is for you. Within the books pages there can be found a wealth of information going back to the early 1940s and stopping in the year 2000 with the launch of the 100th shuttle mission. With the conclusion of the program in 2010, I am looking forward to the 4th edition (if one is on the horizon).

This is the 3rd Edition, by Dennis Jenkins, which covers the first 100 missions.

This is one of the most, if not the most, comprehensive work on the background, concepts, and evolution that led to our Space Shuttle, for the non-technical reader. I purchased it because whenever I looked up winged spacecraft on the Encyclopedia Astronautica website (itself a marvel of space history; even National Geographic was referred to that site by NASA!), this book was cited as a reference. It has provided me with weeks of enjoyable reading since Christmas, and I'm still not finished with it! Highly illustrated. It will be one of the primary references in my space library for years to come. Hopefully Mr. Jenkins will produce a 4th edition after 2010, after the Shuttle retires, which will cover the Columbia disaster, and the final history of the Space Shuttle. My highest recommendation!

I received the 2nd ed. of this book in massage school.

I purchased the 3rd ed. to study for my National test.

WOW! I truly did not think this book could have gotten any better, but it DID! It shows all different views of muscles, muscle groups, bones, boney landmarks, how to find boney landmarks to find muscles, latin/greek roots of the words, study hints, remembering devices, WONDERFUL illustrations!

I also purchased the Student Workbook - which is an ENTIRELY new text with this edition - and it has a lot of different ways to test yourself to prepare for tests.

If you need to know ANYTHING relating to the muscles/bones of the body, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! Don't let the cost fool you ... it is NOT overpriced. I used to think it was (when I found out how much it was by itself - my 2nd ed. was included with my tuition at school), until I bought this new edition.

They added an obscene amount of new pages, and updated their illustrations to make them even EASIER to understand.

If you have any doubts about this book, log on to the publishers website discoverybooks . com - there are excerpts, downloadable pages, etc.

Hope this helps.

Memorizing is not my strong suit so I look for as much as I can to help my brain log this info. This book gave me the missing link. I'm really beginning to tie this all together. It's angle on understanding anatomy is fun and more day to day, the illustrations are b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. Thank you, thank you for creating this fine piece of work. I am psyched to have this on my shelf for the years to come.

I've now found another author who I will have to schedule, like I do with Stephen King. When I get a new King book, I have to leave it alone until I have time to sit down and read the whole thing in one sitting. Obviously, I will have to do the same thing with books by Montanari.

This book is spell-binding. I knew who the killer was... three different times. But I didn't get it right until Montanari was ready for me to know. There are many different stories going on in this book, but they all tie together neatly at the end. The killer keeps asking his victims "What happened that night", but the reader doesn't know the big answer until the very end. And it's startling.

The final wrap-up answers question I didn't realize I had, and gave the whole story a very poignant twist. I had to ask myself how much better the world would be if people focused on love and healing instead of revenge. That simple decision by the killer would have made this story not even happen.

A terrific novel! Held me until I finished it at 2 am, though I had to get up at 6 am. Richard, you're stealing my sleep.

This book was a heart-stopper. It grabbed me right from the beginning. Then for a few chapters it did jump from character to character and you had to read carefully to keep them straight. But it was well worth it. My mind was working through this whole book trying to figure who was doing the murders and also who was responsible for what happened 20 years ago. Just when I thought I knew who it was I would read something that would make me go "Whoa" and I had to rethink my ideas.

I have read several books where someone is getting revenge on a group of people for something they did years ago. But none of them were written quite this way. New characters kept popping up to challenge my thinking. At times I suspected everyone. And even when you think the story is over there is still a surprise. I will be going out to buy Richard Montanari's other books. He is a great writer.

After reading Montanari's excellent fourth and latest novel of suspense, The Rosary Girls, I decided to read his second thriller, The Violet Hour. The Violet Hour is a tale of serial terror and revenge that is mostly chilling and powerful. It is a very good book and clearly demonstrates the potential that was fulfilled in The Rosary Girls. The plot is exciting and well developed and moves along at a steady pace, which will make you want to keep turning the pages. The characters, however, are somewhat thinly deveolped and, without going into detail, some of the situations that occur are a bit implausible. Nevertheless, these criticisms are far overshadowed by the suspense generated by a very talented writer. I'm looking forward to reading Montanari's new book, The Skin Gods, which will be in the bookstores tomorrow.

Wow! This is one fantastic novel! Richard Montanari has created a complex, suspenseful and frightening look at a serial killer. "The Violet Hour" opens with a shocking beginning, and then just moves on, page to page, with one twist after another. It's almost Jeffery Deaver-like, but Montanari's twists are a little subtler and not as "unbelievable" (but don't get me wrong, Deaver is one of my favorite writers!).

The story centers around this killer getting revenge on five people who twenty years earlier did something awful to the girl he loved.

There are many good clues in this book, but he has camouflaged them so well, you only remember then once the book is read. One of the most amazing is this: you won't get one of the clues unless you say a particular word out loud to yourself. Great plot device there!

The identity of the killer is surprising, yet if you read back, you can see all the evidence pointing to them. There are also some great subplots, and an ending that floored me! I wasn't expecting it.

The characters are well-developed, and interesting. Nick Stella is a compassionate hero, who sheds his "scoop of the century" mode to assist in a bizarre series of deaths. Amelia Saintsbury is a good heroine, and her private dilemmas are intermingled well with her potential doom.

All in all, can't say too much, would not want to give anything away! But, this is a GREAT book and I eagerly await Mr. Montanari's next. Am also going to go back and read "Deviant Way." If it's half as good, it's worth the bucks!

Now that might sound easy when not faced with difficulty, but the author talks to so many people some famous and some not, and shows us examples on how focus and belief in an outcome will cause us to act accordingly. The examples from Martin Luther King, Walt Disney, James Earl Jones and countless others are inspiring and uplifting. While we may have heard the believe it, achieve it homily before, Castor motivates readers, inherent in the examples that there are ways the average person can achieve a hero's status in life.

Critical Choices by Dan Castro is one of the largest sources of inspiration I have come across in many years. The book is a quick read, and packs an incredible amount of motivation.

Each success story is easy to understand, and all of them are relevant to every day life, and the bulk will likely help you do what needs to be done; make choices to change your life for the better. All the short accounts of the Hero's lives are bound by common themes which led them to success.

Critical Choices will likely change the way you think about many things for the better, and positively change the way you perceive the world.

I learned a great deal from reading Dan's book, and I plan on sharing it with my friends and family. I suggest you do the same.

One day I was in a very cool book store People's Books) in Austin, Texas; you know those lazy, Summer afternoons when you find yourself all blissed out with the very, very rare opportunity of time? Time to think about your place here, your life and the bountiful world we create around us. Well, as soon as I walked into the store, I felt this magnetic pull toward the second floor...as I rounded the corner up the stair case, I came across this handsome gentle, sweet man in a suit, with this impressively large poster sized cover of a book. It was clear he was getting ready to speak, not privy to the topic of this book or if even this bright soul had written it, I checked out the cover and asked if he was going to be speaking soon and if he had written this book? His warm reply cemented my interested in hearing what this intriguing stranger had share with an intimate group, in a funky book store in Central Texas. When the time approached for him to begin, I took my seat quietly at the front of the room. The beautiful little voice inside me said that I was in for delicious surprise! As soon as Dan Castro stood up in front of the room and began to speak, I was captivated! His beautifully woven tale of how this book came to be was like watching an artist recreate with love and compassion. The light in his eyes as he held the room for more than an hour was so incredibly vibrate, that it made you lean forward with the concentration level of a surgeon. I was so taken by the heart, drive and message coming from this man that the hour felt like only seconds had passed. It was such a gift to have stumbled across this book that I bought two copies that day right after he was done and I have bought three more since, for family and friends. In today's busy world, I know we all wish we had more time to read; please let me personally assure you this book is worth the precious spare time you indulge yourself to read a wonderfully good book!

"Choices" is the point

Like many inspiring, self-help books, Castro's contains myriad stories of "success" under fire. But to me, the most important point he makes is that we all face decision points in our lives. We can CHOOSE how we respond. A common thread ties together almost all of those briefly profiled in this book--they chose to act in an "heroic" manner.

I was especially interested in Castro's first chapter where he laid out his thinking about the difference between what he defines as "heroes," and the rest of us. The secret, he asserts, lies with how they answer three questions: 1. What are you focusing on? 2. What do you believe? 3. What are you expecting.

As a life coach, I think these are excellent questions for anyone who wants to achieve anything outside of their comfort zone. In fact the entire first chapter of the book where Castro develops his thesis about why "heroes" make the choices they do, was informative and helpful. His Seven Laws of Critical Focus could be a roadmap for people who are looking for ways to help them meet challenges in their own lives.

MORE THAN I EXPECTED - A cult classic!

This book is just as most of the reviews have said. Fantastic pictures and stories of the original DOGTOWN Z-BOYS in their heyday. I don't understand how the previous reviewer can say it was "not what she expected" ? THE STORIES AND PROFILES IN THIS BOOK ARE WHAT MADE THE Z-BOYS! It's all about the Z-Boys and the cult that surrounded them, and no one else, so she is mistaken when she says it's not about the Z-Boys, she just must not have taken the time to actually look at the book. It is the ultimate resource on the Z-Boys. There was never anything as important as these stories and pictures to "The Legend" that showed the world what these guys did, who they were, and where they came from. And C.R. Stecyks's words go far beyond what you would expect! Top notch story telling and social commentary. The Glen E. Friedman photos alone, in the second half of the book, are worth it's price. All the photography is so colorful, literally and figuratively. This is true 1970's Southern California Americana at it's best. A must for ANY Z-Boys, Skateboarding, or 70's Pop-cuture fan.

A creative non-fiction dream

If you love creative non-fiction, you'll love this book. Even if you have no emotional attachment to skateboarding, even if you hate skateboarding. The photographs could do all the talking, but once you read the words of CR Stecyk, you'll be a skateboard enthusiast even if you've never seen a half-pipe.

Journalist Stecyk and photographer Friedman grew up in the creative 1970s California coast atmosphere in which their friends pioneer skateboarders, the Z-boys, reinvented their sport. They lived amongst them, they were them. They utelized their artistic talents to chronicle the birth of the Santa Monica surf-skate culture, and their exploits are compiled in this book, a tangible, more-comprehensive version of Peralta's documentary "Dogtown and Z-boys." See the film, get the book, you'll be hooked.

If you were around when Dogtown was the thing, or are just interested in this era of skateboarding, don't miss out on this book! It's got tons of great photos, and of course, the original articles that were in "Skateboarder" magazine. This book is very well constructed; hard-bound glossy pages, all for less than half the price of an old Skateboarder issue on e-bay. Totally worth the money!

I'm not into skating but my 17 year old nephew Stephen is. He is hard to shop for and when I saw this book I knew it was for him. Let me tell you it was a HUGE hit on Christmas morning! The pictures are great and anything that gets kids interested in reading these days gets my vote.

Not what I expected

When I bought this book I expected a biography-type book, like the story of the Z-Boys. That's not really what this is. It's just a collection of articles written about skateboarding during their time. It also has some interviews with Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, and Jay, but the book is mostly about skateboarding during this time, not really about the Z-boys.

It does have a really good amount of photos of them though. So, if you are a skateboarder, this would be a good book, but for a fan of the Z-Boys, this might just be a disapointment.

I have been working in IT & network support for some years now, and am currntly untaking the Cisco Acadmey programs. This book turned up at the right time, as it explains things with greater clarity than anything else I have found. The presentation is logical and of a linear manner, making this my first choice in reference material, for both my studies and professional undertakings.

Through my life I have wanted to change from being an out of control eater to a well controlled person. Eating has been my biggest down fall and I have turned to food for many hiccups through life for comfort.

Jeremy has written this book to talk about his struggles through live and how he learned to over come them. He is transparent with his thoughts and his writing.

It has been encourgaging to read a book that puts the prospective of our mind set in the forefront of our struggle of life. It is our mind set that allows or disallows what we can or cannot achieve in life; and the mind set is choice by each of us as Jeremy helps us see.

The book is easliy read, full of tons of information, inspiration, and truths that we can all use on our journeys through life.

It was also encouraging that when you get on Jeremy's website and you ask a question. . . . he writes! Thanks Jeremy!

What a great book. This is a must read for anyone who has struggled with weight, diet, or self image. It really gets you thinking about the WHY you want to lose weight, which is the most important step. Woven within the how to's is Jeremy's own story. The cover can show you what Jeremy has done. The inside gives you details of his ups and downs. The types of ups and downs that we all face and must overcome. Detailed enough for someone looking for specifics but easy reading enough for those of us who get discouraged by too much detail. This book is worth the purchase price just for the lessons on how to read the ingredients on labels. If I could give 6 or 7 stars I would!!
