I really can't understand all the 5 stars this got because other than a short, brilliant chapter on flying the camel, it just goes on and on and on and...you get the idea. Plot summary: get up and fly, dodge archie, come back to base, maybe somebody dies, get drunk, do it again tomorrow. That's pretty much it folks. Don't look for any plot development or character development here. There is some philisophical rambling about the meaning of the war which should rightly be included in any war book. Never goes anywhere. it was hard to actually finish the book but i was curious to see if it actually every "took off and flew". final verdict? down in flames! Want my copy free?

In doing some family history research I established that an 18 year old relative had died in a mid air collision while flying a Sopwith Camel in the same area and at the same time this story is set. I was searching for some literature that could give me some understanding of what this brave young man had experienced. I could not have found anything that could have been more compelling reading or had more of an emotional impact than this superbly written account of the machinery and the time.

A ripping yarn, a must for aviation enthusiasts, replete with explicit and graphic flight scenes. The philosophizing seems more 1930's than 1918, but that's when the author published it. The way the author/hero deals with the loss of comrades is skilled writing, evoking the banality of having to get on with the job without mourning. i'm not qualified to comment on any authenticity of the feeling expressed/felt but it stands out from others of the genre for that reason. for me, it ranks with Sagittarius Rising, and Derek Robinson's work. the author enjoys spiking the sometimes purple prose with neologisms and entertaining latinisms; a trait i enjoy but others shouldn't have much trouble ignoring.

One of the great novels about flying over the trenches in World War 1. The only shame is that this edition does not carry the introduction by
T E Lawrence ('Lawrence of Arabia') that the earlier editions carry. Based upon the author's own experiences in the RFC it does not glamorise the life, nor does it indulge in self-pity.

Based upon the author's own experiences in the RFC in 1918 here is the complete story of the war in the air on the western front. 148 sorties, the slow inexorable death of friends and squadron mates one at a time until only a squadron of ghosts is left, dogfights with Fokkers, air superiority over the Huns, death in the air, flamers (the worst way to die!), Archie, getting tight in the mess each evening singing rousing songs and smashing furniture to relieve the tension, dropping bombs, low altitude ground strafing, slaughtering ground troops with your machine guns until it sickens you, downing two seaters, mechanical failures of your Sopwith Camel while waiting for the new Snipes to arrive from England,gliding or limping back to the lines and safety, mid-air collisions, influenza turning to TB. It is all there. Highly recommended. This is the best book on the war in the air in WW1 I have ever found. Read it, and then read it again. It is that good.

My toddler son is attending a French pre-school and we plan to enroll him in a French primary school as well. We don't know French at all and speak English in the home. We got this CD around his 2nd birthday and it has been a valuable tool. The songs and rhymes that are on the CD are the same songs and rhymes that he sings at school. I think this CD has helped him to learn faster and be able to "fit in" at school, when we, his parents, could not offer him any thing in this subject area!
The songs are very pleasant and not torture to parental ears, and the accents are authentic. This is 100% French language with no spoken English. However the CD does come with a booklet with the lyrics in both French and English, so if you don't now any French at all, you can read it and get some idea about what your little one is singing!

I love this CD. It is fun, very nice songs and rhymes. Very easy to follow. My kids listen to it every day in the car and in a month they are singing and counting in french.

The method is so wonderful that I just ordered the one for Chinese.

My 9mo. old loves this CD as much as I do. I studied French for 4 yrs and learned more from the songs on this CD! I like it because I don't get sick of it and find myself humming the songs when the CD is not on! I haven't bothered with the books yet but hopefully will get to them before baby finishes high school.

I just got this item yesterday and have not had a chance yet to go through the book but my first reaction is a little bit of disappointment.
I may not have read the exact description of the product but I was expecting a board baby book with lyrics and pictures and not a guide for parents that I am sure is nonetheless very interesting. We have another CD with a board book and it is truly amazing; The book is colourful and some of the songs are interpreted by children which is the second thing I was expecting from this product. It is so much fun to listen to those cute little voices instead of those quite boring adult voices.
The only thing I like about this CD is that it has a lot of songs and rhymes that I grew up with and I am glad that my son will be able to learn them because for most of them I had forgotten the lyrics.

This CD is wonderful! I find a lot of products for children 2 and older but this product is geared specifically towards children ages 2 and younger who are learning another language. My degree is in French, so I understand the CD, and I think that the things that it teaches are excellent! It exposes children to sounds specific to french, like the double l which is pronounced y, the ever-problematic french "r", as well as idiomatic things like "Trois" as the number three as well as "toi" used as the informal you. Best of all it is all done in a fun way through songs, rhymes, etc. I put this CD on every night when my daughter goes to bed and we both really enjoy it!! I think I'm going to buy the Spanish and Italian ones too!

This book was a favorite of my children 38 years ago and now I'm buying it for my grandchildren --- and they love it too. It helps teach words of place: over, around, between, down, out, up. Plus it is a gentle "scary book."

This book is so magical when you're a kid. The illustrations are wonderful and just scary enough. I love the last page where the kids are all snug back in bed. Kids can read this book because of the repetition. It's a great way to learn to read!

We had this book when our children were small. Our youngest boy had it memorized in short order and would correct his father if he left anything out while reading. Now our daughter asked for it for her new little boy. We bought it for him for Christmas. He has already listened to it several times (he is 9 1/2 mos old). We love the book.

My kids (girl 8,boy 7) love the Berenstain Bears. I grew up with these books and now my kids are, too.
We all enjoy reading these stories and In the dark is a keeper.

This was my second copy of the book. My kids wanted to give a copy to their teacher.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. As someone looking to get recertified in scuba, I learned a great deal on how NOT to be a statistic.

Diver Down is an easy to read book that appeals to all divers, expert or novice. The book focuses on mistakes made by divers at all experience, levels which in some cases cost them their lives. Reading this book will enable you to learn valuable lessons without making the same mistakes these unfortunate divers made.

I think among divers it is generally known, that the majority of dive accidents could easily have been prevented with better planning or better reactions to occuring problems.
Newer divers, and even some experienced ones, however lack certain experiences, that make dives safe while still being enjoyable.
This book gets you thinking...
I myself came away from reading it with one or two things that I will do differently in the future...
I can recommend this book to any diver.

One of the best diving books I have read. Makes you re-think how you dive.

If you have logged only a handful of dives or enough to fill a log book, this book is a must read. Learning from other peoples' mistakes could quite possibly save your life, and this book is full of practical, experiential knowledge that will most certainly help you to become a better diver; more aware of the risks involved and how to avoid them. It's also a good intro for those who might be interested in learning to dive, although it quite possibly might scare folks away from the sport. Probably won't be letting my wife read it either.

Amanda suspects that there is something very wrong about Chrissy. She wants to make her parents believe that she is evil because she claims that she killed her pets. But Amanda's parents think Chrissy is very responsible, kind and sweet.

This book was pretty exciting, Kinda sad when the certain charactors died. But other that that it was good. I read this book in february and its definatly worth buying.

In the book one evil summer Amanda Conklin's mom is looking for a mother's helper. She sends out an ad in the Seahaven Daily. Amanda can't help her mom because she is failing algebra and has to go to summer school. A girl named Chrissy answers the ad. As soon as she walks through the door, Amanda's cat, Mr. Jinx, starts to hiss at Chrissy. Also Salt and Pepper, her birds, stop singing and they usually sing. Little do the Conklins know that Chrissy is perfect, perfectly evil!! This book is perfect reading for anyone 10 and older. R.L. Stine has many climaxes and rising actions throughout the story. I highly recommend this book.

One Evil Summer is truly a thriller. When I was reading it, I got chills up m y spine. It is about a girl named Amanda. During the summer, she comes to a small town called Seahaven. Since she can't baby-sit her brother Kyle and her sister Merry, her mom hires a babysitter, Chrissy. She seems like miss perfect, but Amanda finds her a bit unique. The truth is that Chrissy wants to kill Amanda and her family. There were many things that I liked and disliked about this book. R.L. Stine made the book so interesting that you couldn't put it away. He described the events in such a way that you felt as if you were actually there. I also loved the way he described Amanda. She had such self confidence. She would stick up for what she saw. " You were floating!" she shrieked. "Don't deny it! I saw you!" She tried to tell her parents, but they wouldn't listen to her.
There were also many things that I disliked about the book. For example, I disliked the way some of the events were a little juvenile. At those points of the book, I would start to think what the author was thinking when he wrote this line. " Chrissy was floating closer! Closer!" The book could have been better.
My favorite part f the book was the ending. It unraveled everything. I thought that the end of the book was the scariest. It was hard to believe the ending....BR>This was a scary but great book.

Rick R.Reed has confected a mystery/horror/suspense tale as only an artist could do. Not only is the story a major page-turner, but the reader comes to know the characters as three dimensional human beings -- and one tends to care about them.

I read at least one book of mystery fiction per month. I tend to enjoy the most those works which shed light on a certain culture or role: being Amish, being a guidance counselor, being a maid, being an Irish inn-keeper, being a journalist, etc. In recent years writers such as john Morgan Wilson, Mark Richard Zubro, and RD Zimmerman have invited readers into the gay community with all of its wonderful and intersting attributes, as well as it demonic dimensions. I believe Reed has done the finest work, however, in the cause and effect within human relationships. Also, the reader cares about the characters, and flinches at some of the events which have formed their experiences. Definitely, this is not a "cozy."

A reader does not have to be gay, however, to share in this story, any more than one needs to be Catholic to understand THE DI VINCI CODE. The author develops the meaning of psychosis, displays the technology which is such a great influence in our current culture, and empathetically focuses on the effect of life minus loving relationships. As well he develops a budding relationship which adds an element of hope to the story, as well as an invitation to further stories flowing from this love.

As a Chicagoan I was excited about the use of so many places in the story which are only blocks from my home. He so well describes these settings, however, that one could live in Newcomerstown, Ohio or Rim-of-the-World, California and still share in the adventure with the same high interest. Again, this is an artist who has developed this tome.

I have already recommended this story to my friends. I want to encourage any mystery buff to explore this novel.

IM is one of those rare books that scared the bejeezus out of me, to the point that I had to put the book down. A few days later, I was drawn back to the book "like a moth to a flame."

The story moves quickly, switching seamlessly between several points of view - Ed Comparetto the detective, the victims, the bystanders and the killer. The third person narrative, switching to first person narrative with the murderer was intensely effective. Downright creepy! The mystery unfolds in many layers, shifting in time, twisting and turning to the heart-pounding end. Once everything is revealed, Reed isn't done with us yet; the story continuing through one final confrontation between Comparetto and the killer. At first, when I read the "blurb" on the back of the book I was slightly disappointed that so much was given away, but I soon realized that was only the beginning of something so much more. The blurb was like a plot device in itself. I also felt the ending left something unresolved, but once my heart rate returned to normal, the ending made perfect sense - Comparetto was where he wanted to be.

Detective Ed Comparetto is an appealing character, a dedicated cop that still feels compassion and remorse for the victims. He isn't one of those wise-cracking police detectives, spewing out one-liners like some "has been" stand-up comedian. When Comparetto enters the first murder scene, he's feeling unsettled and apprehensive, oppressed with "what's behind door number one" type of feeling. He hides his true emotions well, slipping into that professional cop-mode, feeling the need to prove himself to those out there that are just waiting for him to "slip-up." His professional life is already threatened after a recent "public" outing. Ed's a humanly portrayed character, with all his human flaws and human weaknesses. In other words, he's not an arrogantly perfect macho man. And this is not meant to be a negative reflection on Ed's sexual orientation. It is wholeheartedly meant as a compliment. I really got into Ed's character, his motivations and toward the end -- his fear.

I loved Ed's lover, Peter. The two meet for the first time in a library where Peter worked, when Ed was researching a lead. Peter's like a breath of fresh air in the story, pursuing Ed with an amusing single-minded determination. He's a lot like Nick's Nora (The Thin Man Series), helping Ed investigate and sort out the conflicting clues. A real partner in and out of bed. I would have loved to see more of Peter. Peter begins to have second doubts about their relationship, when Ed starts to become obsessive about the case. For Ed it's more than just finding the killer, it has become something personal. And that's something Peter needs to figure out.

The book should have Nightmare Warnings, because I sure as heck had 'em! I liked Reed's use of descriptive phrases to set the proper mood like, "the gallery of ghouls," to described the assembled investigation team at the first murder. I thought the plot became a little "out there" with certain elements, but I realized that was just the type of book I was reading. I just suspended my mundane imagination a little and enjoyed the nightmare ... I mean the story.

According to Reed's Amazon Blog, he has signed a contract for a film option. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! And my toes. *grins*

When it rains, it pours...just ask Ed Comparetto...

The Chicago police detective's life is losing its luster: his lover has just left him, and, blamed for his failure to solve a rash of gruesome killings, he is suddenly run off the force. What he doesn't know, though, is that nothing can prepare him for discovering who is truly responsible for the murders - especially considering the fact that all roads actually lead to someone who died in similar fashion just two years before...

The action of IM is unmatched. Reed deftly weaves intriguing characters throughout an intricate plotline of misdirection and manipulative sleight-of-hand. The resulting mosaic is a masterpiece of suspense and nail-biting drama. Many make noble attempts at crafting whodunits, but few pull it off with such convincing realism as Reed.

The backdrop of IM lends much to the enjoyment you experience in putting all the different pieces together along the way, as you truly don't know just who/what the big picture will ultimately reveal. With equal parts action and mystery, Reed's tale is an enjoyable, fast-paced read entertaining to the fullest. Highly recommended for all readers, whether you're fans of the genre or not.

Rick Reed is a conundrum; on the outside,he is a really sweet, unassuming man,easy to talk to and be around. On the inside, he is a true master of terror as is evidenced by his new novel, IM. As many mystery books as I read, I consider myself fairly erudite in my reading of gay fiction, especially mystery and horror, but after reading Reed's new horror thriller, he delivered something to me I had not seen in a while: goose bumps!

There is something about Reed's writing that draws you in instantly;he is a master of the written word, knowing just what words and phrases to use to pull you into his world so deep that it is impossible to leave. You find yourself turning page after page as you unknowingly go around the room turning on lamps and pulling the blinds to make sure no one from the outside is looking in on you; that you really are alone as Reed takes you on a roller coaster ride of suspense and horror that leaves you breathless until you finish the last page and last word. It has been a long time since I wanted to sleep with the lights on but Reed can scare the daylights out of you, then sit back and grin as you wonder just what else he has plotting in that mind of his.

Since almost everyone has a computer and communicates with the world via cyberspace, we think of it as a wonderful thing. But after reading Reed's novel, you begin to think twice before hitting the "send" button for fear of what just might happen to you.

I have known Rick Reed since his first book was published and he has always come through on his promise to elicit thrills, chills and even terror as he spreads his words on his screen like a painter paints a fine masterpiece.

If you are bold enough to read IM, don't make the mistake I did; don't read it at night alone with only one light on. Make sure the room is well lit so you can see all the hidden crevices and see that the windows and doors are locked. Only then should you proceed to read one of the best thrillers I have read in a long while.

If there were a "six star" rating for this book, he would get it hands down!

Timothy Bright, a handsome young character in this horror thriller, hides a past full of sexual abuse and rage. He takes out his grief and anger upon gay men by instant messaging at Men4HookUpNow.com and killing the guys who meet up with him for sexual encounters.

Ed Comparetto, a gay Chicago police detective, catches the cases and is put through a nightmarish investigation which culminates in his suspension from the job when doubt is cast on his findings. He's sure that Timothy Bright is the murderer, but he can't figure out how to prove it. Once he's suspended, the cases become Ed's personal crusade. He'll have to put his own life on the line - and that of someone else he loves - in order to stop this killer. Will he risk it all?

Reed has created an engrossing story - albeit brutally violent and sometimes gory. The writing is crisp and carries the reader along on a wave of suspense and horror. Reed expertly uses third person for Comparetto's investigation, first person for the murderer, and diary entries about Bright to bring this novel to life. He has capitalized on the phenomenon of people meeting via the Internet and dating services, and IM ends up being quite the scary cautionary tale.

The book is not for the faint-hearted, but is highly recommended for all those who enjoy horror a la "Silence of the Lambs." If you enjoy a bit of gore, a tense thriller, and well-crafted characters, you'll be utterly captivated by this book. ~Lori L. Lake, Midwest Book Review

I found this book very encouraging! I really like books that tell you about solutions to problems.

This is the first book I've read about homeopathy, and it really impressed me. From the author's personal stories about her son being cured of autism to her review of the medical literature concerning homeopathy (which, aside from a few errors in the footnoting, is quite excellent), the book kept me, someone who is on the fence about homeopathy, riveted.

I don't usually write reviews because it takes alot to impress me. This books fits that criteria. It is a wonderful book dealing with a mom at her wits end with a child diagnosed with autism. It was recommended to me by a lady studying homeopathy and I am so glad that I took her advise. If there is one book that I would recommend the lay person to understand the when, where, how,what, and why of homeopathy it would be this book. Because I am a mom and I don't have a lot of time to read books with a lot of high minded words written by a person who thinks way to much of themself than they should, I loved this book. She is compassionate and caring and uses words and thoughts that are easy to understand for a person who feels that there has got to be something better out there. When you read this book you can tell that she wrote it out of love and a desire to help others who may have found themselves in a similar situation to hers. I like the book "Homeopathy made simple" for how to treat different ailments and the specific remedies to use, but "The Impossible Cure" is outstanding when compared to other books that I have read dealing with Homeopathy.

I don't usually use all caps but this was the best book ever on introducing the reader to homeopathy! It's easy to read, and helps those that may not be aware of homeopathy's healing powers that it really does work despite some of the misconceptions out there. If you are new to homeopathy than you MUST READ this book.

As a long time student of Homeopathy, I heartily endorse this book and all the excellent reviews of it. Rather than repeat what has already been said so eloquently, I will simply add that Homeopathy is an incredible asset to our well-being. Practitioners spend many years studying their art and are always updating their training and learning more about what Homeopathy can do, and how to best utilize this amazing healing agent.

Anyone who is willing to spend a bit of time studying Homeopathy, including its history and the principles on which it is based, will be well rewarded. For chronic or complicated conditions a qualified professional is essential. The optimum would be to consult with a professional, and at the same time study the first aid applications that you can use on your own. It would, of course, be preferable to have the option of checking with the professional when using the remedies independently for such things as bumps and bruises, etc.

Homeopathy is so powerful that it is important to know the basic guidelines, even when using the remedies easily available, such as Arnica. Homeopathy is one area is which the reward for time spent studying is repaid many times over when the correct remedy is used and you experience the miracle of Homeopathy for yourself. Also, by being informed, we know when it is important to consult a professional rather than self-medicate. The remedies are safe and virtually side-effect free, however as with anything that is this effective, knowledge is important.

A great place to start is this book - and if you are already a student of Homeopathy, this is an excellent book to further your understanding.

There are other books on the subject that capture a child's interest better. Passable, but nothing to rush and buy.

Just Go To Bed was one of the first Little Critter books that I bought for our son. He was in so many ways our own "little critter". The character and our son felt the same way about going to bed and the frustrations and joys of growing up. Later we added a baby girl to the family and our own little critter also had a baby sister. Almost three decades later our little critter has his own son (who has a baby sister). All of the roles have shifted. Three generations in this family enjoy and appreciate "Little Critter" and his out-look on life.

My husband reads this to my kids ages 3 and 2 every night. My three year old has it memorized and reads it back to daddy too. Right after, they always go to bed!! It's the greatest book. They walk around the house pretending to be "little critter" telling everyone to put on their pajamas and "GO TO BED!"

My 3 year old daughter adores this book! We have literally worn out the cover. I am needing to buy another copy to keep this favorite alive. My daughter can recite the entire book and will look at the pictures even after we are done reading it before she falls asleep. It encourages the imagination and instills the message that everyone needs sleep. A must have!

My 3 year old loves this book. I do too, when she's being difficult about going to sleep, we read this and she follows Lil Critters example. LOL I use whatever works...and this works.

Easily the best book on Linux that I have ever read or bought. Also one of the best computer books overall that I have ever used. That is saying a lot given that I have many computer books on the full range of computer topics and given that I am very picky in what I buy. The other reviews - all but one 5-star - give details on the book. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to set up a Linux system or who has an interest in learning about Linux.

In regard to Linux in general, it provides a superior platform to the Microsoft platforms. Also the add-on programs that are available - all of the most useful are included in any of the best-known distributions, such as Ubuntu or Red Hat/Fedora - are as good as (in the sense of user-friendly) as the comparable Windows programs and in many cases better.

What is interesting to me is that much of the Linux development occurs outside the USA. It is a great tribute to the huge Linux-oriented developer universe that those developers have developed such outstanding tools that are free of the exorbitant, monopoly-determined prices of Microsoft products. So I hereby thank you all for your fantastic contributions to computer technology. Without your programs we would all be prey to the monopoly pricing and less-than-optimal programs produced by Microsoft. Not to say that there is anything wrong with most Microsoft products, but thank god there are better products available and better yet that most are free of licensing cost and most are changeable because the source code is available.

It's been two years since I've purchased this book, and I still reference it from time to time.

This book covers many common open-source applications used in conjunction with linux (bind,samba,sendmail,etc).

The examples are well-written. It's a great book for someone who is wanting to educate themselves to use linux.

I will note that the book seems to be red-hat/fedora biased. I use fedora, so that was a plus.

Much of what I have done piecing together information from Google is concisely done in this guide. This book got my mail server setup in no time whereas in the past I gave up in frustration (and lack of knowledge).

The mail chapter alone was worth the price but this book is full of solving common system administration tasks for people with some linux experience but not the expertise of being a sysadmin.

I really enjoy the content of the Book. Since my early days using Linux consult the linuxhomenetworking website for tips & howtos.

This is surely a must have book. It's been a while since I see some book with so much content !!!.

This certainly isn't a hand holding introduction to Linux by any means (jump in at the deep end, it works!). However if you're looking for a down to earth, practical guide to a variety of everyday tasks involved in running Linux in a server environment you'll find this book very useful. The subject matter covered is useful, and the explanations are sufficient with plenty of useful examples. Certainly a good introduction although obviously for the finer points of configuration more specialised sources will need to be consulted.

I found the book well laid out; it was easy to find solutions to problems. I like the small size; very easy to carry around. I recommend this series of books to anyone who is an admin.

WOW. So much for so little and in such a little compact book is amazing. Perfect for a newbie looking to get into Administration of windows 2000 servers or a seasoned MCSE that needs refresher.
Excellent book.

My library of tech books fills many shelves. Out all of those books, Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is one of the most used. I highly recommend it as a desktop reference. I refer to it all the time and it is one of the rare tech books I read cover to cover as well.

This is the best Win2K Server book I have come across for daily administration. Stanek's writing style is actually enjoyable to read and easy to understand. He obviously knows the subject, and this book is like attending an expert training class. It's refreshing to read a book written for the real admins. I also used it to help prep for MCSE tests on Win2K.

I particularly bought the book because I needed additional training on Active Directory. It has also helped with our DNS and DHCP configuration. Finally I found a book that covers Win2K DNS in good detail and also details how it integrates with AD. After reading the book, I finally fixed our DNS and AD problems. Another highlight of the book for me was his covering disk configurations, roaming profiles and EFS. Lots of expert tips and insights. Again, the book's not an exhaustive reference on the subject but is a solid daily adminstration reference. I highly recommend this book as a primary tool to correctly learn how to admin a Win2K domain.

I have the first edition and got the second edition immediaetly. With the second edition, Stanek has done a great job! This book is well written, easy to follow and concise, yet packed with lot's of useful information and hints and tips for Windows 2000. I consider myself a fairly expert Windows admin, but still learned quite a lot from this book. Like other Windows books that Stanek has written, this one is excellent for either new admins or experienced admins. I whole heartedly recommend this book to everyone.
