Like another reviewer, I find it hard to put this book down.
It is frankly and beautifully written in a way that puts the reader in the back of the Rolls Royce with Abby Rockefeller and behind the desk with Edith in her Greenwich village gallery.

I am only half way through the book and am savoring it thoroughly for the ride that it is taking me on: I feel like I walked the construction site of Rockefeller Center, toured Radio City Music before the first Rockette,
and participated in persuading Mayor LaGuardia to put a subway stop at Rock Center....

Fascinating and excellent read.

Fascinating bio and first rate discussion of the strange intersection of high-art and commerece. Shows how much artists owe to the people who support and believe in them.

Good Read For Any Small Business Owner. It's Fascinating History As Well!

I had a lot of trouble putting aside the book so that I could take care of my normal daily chores and business. It was interesting to me from a variety of points. One of them was the excellent introduction information about how the author first learned of Edith Gegor Halpet and then how surpirsed she was to discover a treasure trove of available research material including an oral history that included more than 800 transcrbed pages. While I'm not in the gallery business, I do enjoy art and I found the book a very interesting story of how tough a business the marketing of art really is. Halpert's struggles opening and running a gallery have valuable lessons for any small business owner. Some of her sales techniques could be applied to almost any business with great success. The book is a great read and provides glimpses into the world of art, artists, patrons, museums, and the important contributions women have made to the art fields over the years. It's another example of how women have come into their own.

Portrait of a Titan of American Modern Art

The title here is just a little bit misleading. Yes Edith was the girl with the gallery, but there were a lot of girls that had galleries. What Edith built was THE Gallery, at least so far as modern American art was concerned. Furthermore she did it from the outside, she was born Russian, coming to America when she was six, and at the young age of 26 founding the Downtown Gallery in Greenwich Village.

There was at the time no American art movement. The few painters of the time had great difficulty selling their work. Edith changed that. Her gallery specialized in the work of these New York locals, combined agressive selling with a devotion to this style that remained for forty four years.

It was largely because of her that there is an American art scene. This book is a fine tribute to her life that has largely been forgotten.

This book has 120 Sudoku puzzles with grids of 4x4, 6x6, and 9x9. All the puzzles are of the classic type using numbers. There are no alphabet sudoku puzzles that are played with letters. The puzzles increase gradually in difficulty from the beginning to the end of the book. Although this book is for kids, the simple 4x4 puzzles are limited to only 20 puzzles. For a book with solely 4x4 puzzles and with alphabet sudoku, check the book "Kindergarten Sudoku".

How to understood Sudoku - start off with "Superstar Sudoku for Kids". Great book for children and adults that have never played this game. I am an adult and wanted a book that was simple to understand but at the same time taught me how to play this game. After a week I understood how to play Sudoku and have since moved on to more adult complex Sudoku. This was definitely the starting point for me. I then purchased this book for a friend who did not have the patience to take time out to read some complicated instructions. I recommend this book as one of the best beginner books for children and adults. I am now hooked on Sudoku.

Great fun - my kids love it!

There are so many Sudoku books for kids on the market, I really didn't know which one to choose. In the end I decided I liked the look of the cover of this one and that is how I made my decision! I don't regret it for a moment. I have 3 kids, aged 6, 7 and a bit, and 10, and they have so much fun doing these sudoku puzzles.

The puzzles in the book are very carefully graded, starting with very easy 4x4 puzzles and progressing through more difficult 4x4s to easy 6x6s, then through more difficult 6x6s to a series of 9x9s. It seems to me that if you start at the right place for your kids and follow the order of the book, the kids get gradually better and better. My 6 year old started with the 4x4s and is now doing the harder 6x6s and really enjoying them!

At the end of the book there are some "Extra" puzzles which have a code word hidden in them. I haven't seen this kind of sudoku puzzle anywhere else, but my eldest daughter really loves them. We would like more of these.

This is a great book - chunky, fun and great value for money! Your kids will definitely enjoy it.

"Crash! Bang! Crash! Bang! Boom! Something's going on in Nora's room!" Mother, cooking dinner, baby twins playing in the kitchen, the family dog and even a pet parakeet wonder at all the noise from upstairs. "How much noise does a little girl need? Sounds like the whole city zoo got freed!" Could it be bears dancing with moose, rhinos playing musical chairs or gorillas playing duck, duck, goose? Maybe it's an elephant hoedown or a couple of giants sitting on a town. Let's go upstairs to the door that says "Enter if you Dare" and find out..... The dynamic sister duo of Jessica Harper and Lindsay Harper duPont have authored another clever, silly picture book that's perfect for youngsters 3-7. Ms Harper's humorous rhyming text is complemented by her sister's wonderfully expressive and colorful illustrations and together they've created a charming, joyful story, with a little joke at the end, that won't be lost on young readers. So take a deep breath, open that bedroom door and find out what Nora's up to.

Cranes: The Noblest Flyers is an outstanding natural history title which blends scientific observation and studies with the author's own field observations and line drawings, thereby providing a lovely survey of the bird and its habitat. Poetic descriptions and first-person insights and experiences abound, along with a healthy dose of science.

This book catalogs the basic biology of swans and spreads its wings to encircle the mythological, literary, historical and mystical meanings swans have had for humans through the ages. Information from it will find its way into the pages of my next book, How to Raise Poultry, following How To Raise Chickens: Everything You Need To Know (How to Raise...), next year. A beautiful reference, the kind of book you can hold and page through for hours.

Sylvia has once again published another helpful book. Rather than this book being alot of psychic talk, we have another "theme" going on here, which is "Tolerance". We are surrounded by so many different types of people who have many different themes in life. She goes in depth about the life purpose of these people, including yourself, and show us that we are all on a seperate journey to fullfill our themes. We are here for each other, and we were all ment to be around the people that we have, wether we like it or not. We are here for a specific reason, even the irritating ones... have some patience they are here to help too.

As with all of Sylvia's books that I have read so far it kept me interested, opened my mind and made me ask questions. I feel that if anything I read makes me think then it must be good. I have made so many positive changes in my life and have found a peace I never knew existed since being touched by the works of Sylvia that it would be impossible to not see or to accept this fact.

I highly recomend this book.

If you ever wondered about reincarnation, this book may make a believer out of you.

This book explores Sylvia's experiences as a degreed hypnotherapist who has come across many supposedly "unsolvable" cases where past life regression revealed the link to some of the baffling ills suffered by clients in this lifetime. There are many fascinating case studies, that have later been back researched and verified by historical census records and other historical public records.

David Price is a businessman, who takes pride in being an entrepreneur and having a staff of employees on whom he can depend. That's why when his best friend of thirty years, taps him to provide personal, 24/7 security services to sexy and voluptuous Sugar Greer, he can't say no. Even though taking the case goes against his better judgment, David never could say no to a beautiful woman.

David sets off to serve and protect Sugar, who is on the run from an abusive, overbearing husband, and his gang of religious followers. Sugar tells David all the sordid details of her marriage and reels him in, hook, line and sinker. But can Sugar be trusted? Is her story credible, even though it appears to be believable? After her husband is suddenly murdered, David becomes the prime suspect. He is forced to distinguish between fact and fiction in an effort to clear his name. David finds himself caught up in a web of deception and deceit. Now his rock solid friendship with his best friend is
threatened, and the protection of his own life becomes paramount.

ONE DEAD PREACHER is a suspenseful tale, full of action and drama. Readers will find themselves unable to put this novel down because of Lindsay's great storytelling abilities. I was surprised to learn this is Lindsay's debut novel. I look forward to reading Lindsay's upcoming release, ONE DEAD LAWYER.

One Dead Preacher is a great mystery that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

Sugar Greer is a sexy, smart and mysterious that is married to the preacher that turns up dead.

David is a smooth operator and security ceo that is hired to be Sugar body guard. He falls for Sugar and let her lead him into danger.

Ricky and David is best friends but as Sugar works her magic on both. She has both of them tripping out on each other. One is accusing the other of killing the preacher.

What I like about the book the most is the way Tony Lindsay crafted his style by keeping the mystery going without giving the suspect away. All the twists and turns keeping the characters alive. He brings you into the world of David,Sugar,Ricky,Brother Yazz(Preacher),mother Owens (mother of the preacher),Regina(ex-wife of David)and Martha(wife of Ricky). There is lies, secrets, truth, drugs, sex, murder and jealousy. I'm really looking forward to his next book.

Tony Lindsay is a master of what he writes. Not only because he writes what he knows about, but he actually writes intelligently--to please his audience subtly. He is creative, includes everyone, and he tries to lead people to positive solutions. I can't say enough about this author. One Dead Preacher was funny, dramatic, mysterious, and real. I have purchased all of this author's novels.

Someone recommended this series to me and since I'm on summer break I just plowed through all 5 books. I sincerely hope to be reading Lindsay's adventures for years to come. There's a whole planet for her to excavate and find mysteries to solve. The worst part about finishing Airtight Case was knowing that I didn't have another Beverly Connor novel to read after this one!

Connor does a great job of exploring the fascinating world of Archaeology and manages to create interesting characters that she reintroduces with each book. The surrounding characters grow along with her protagonist, Lindsay Chamberlain, a highly intellegent, well-educated, and curious archaeologist.

I hope Connor has more ideas for Lindsay Chamberlain's adventures and her publisher has the foresight to see them put into print.

Sorry to say I could not bring myself to read more than one quarter of this book. The characters are cardboard cutouts and the dialog amateurishly written. The archeologists in the story behave like children and seem to have no more than a grade school education. I stuck with the book for as long as I did because the house at the archeological dig was supposed to be haunted, and I love a good ghost story, but the writing was so poor and the characters were so silly and boring. After the main character mentioned for the second time that her job was so dangerous and that she had been shot, stabbed, kidnapped, almost drowned, lost in a cave, and buried alive, I just had to quit! UNBELIEVABLE!!! I just couldn't read any more!

I have really enjoyed every book in this series and this may be the best to date. I never re-read a mystery. Once I know who-done-it there isn't much point in reading the story a second time. Beverly Connors books are the exception to my rule. There is enough excitement and enough detail to keep you going back a second or even third time.

I gave my original copy of AIRTIGHT CASE to a friend (who loved it). Now I have to buy a new copy so that I can get my Lindsay Chamberlain fix before the next novel in this series is published.

Archaeology and escaping from a shallow grave
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-29
Lindsay Chamberlain, forensic anthropologist, is buried alive in a shallow grave in East Tennessee in the woods. She manages to escape, but she suffers from amnesia. Even when her memory returns, it is not complete.

She joins an excavation at an 1830s farm site. It is located on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. She loves the Smokies, but her recent assault is always on her mind causing her to have trouble concentrating and relaxing.

Claire Burke, the site director, causes tension among the crew. She is also very hostile to Lindsay. Drew Van Horne, the principal investigator, is suspected of murdering Mary Susan Tidwell and stealing valuable documents from her.

Lindsay's boss, Lewis, asks her to look into the allegations against Drew. Lindsay is uncomfortable with this, but finally agrees.

Two sealed lead coffins from the 1700s are discovered during the excavation. The dig becomes a big find. When they open the first coffin, they find the remains of a woman who appears to have something in common with Lindsay. One of the crew goes missing. Now Lindsay feels to regain her sanity, and possibly her life, she must solve this mystery.

I am not a history buff, but I truly love this series. I find the locations to be interesting. I always learn something new. Ms. Connor describes the archaeology in a way that I can understand and it has so much reality to it. Her characters are very believable, and the interaction between them is also very realistic.

I always enjoy reading this series. Lindsay is a very likeable character and I enjoy finding out what she is up to in each book.

I highly recommend this book and this series. Whether you like history or not, you will find this to be an enjoyable read.

On a weeknight. Knowing I had to get up and go to work in the morning. So be warned -- start this book when you know you'll have to read it nonstop (like a beach?)

It took about one sentence for me to get into the book. The action begins immediately -- archeologist Lindsay Chamberlain is in a hospital with amnesia, and some guy who claims to be her fiance wants to take her home, but she knows something's wrong and tries to get away from him... well, you get the idea.

Before long, the action shifts to an archeological dig in Tennessee just outside Smoky Mountains National Park. The crew on the dig are having major problems with a horribly belligerant site manager and lots of in-fighting. Somehow or another, these two stories have to come together, and they do, around archeologist Lindsay Chamberlain.

I highly recommend this book -- I think it's the best book I've read so far this year.
