Great Basic Outline

Review Date: 2000-08-28
This is the best basic outline of how to use SQL that I've seen. Other choices are books that merely provide a dictionary of commands, or that get into complicated solutions using particular programs. The excellent open formatting of this (short) book makes it a quick read as well as a good reference. After you've read this book you'll know the structure of SQL and enough basic commands to get started, and you'll be ready to move on to something more complicated- that's the time to buy a book about a specific program.

I don't like this book. This book doesn't use Ansi-92 SQL, instead it uses the SQL language implemented in SQLBase. The second half of the book show how to implement an application in SQL Windows!

I thought this book was very informative. I used both the online version of the text and the actual book. I used both the Macro and Micro versions and was very impressed with how interesting they could make economics.

I found no errors or problems with anything online.

Online presentation hides mistakes.

Students that use this textbook along with their online college course should be aware that the online material has many mistakes and shouldn't be relied on to pass the course. Also some pages provided online is not printed in the textbook. You have to have the online "campuscompass" to complete the course. Some of the support pretest don't provide answers - so you don't know if you understand the material. Very shallow college material.

Great MATLAB examples

The book contains valuable examples for classical control of SISO systems. Topics covered even include digital control and robust control.

Easy to read, use as a control systems review.

This is a companion to "Modern Control Systems" by Dorf & Bishop. Much of the text of this book refers back to the "parent" text, and as such some sections of this text seem somewhat "incomplete". Easy to read, good as a stand-alone review of control systems. Not much on "modern control" (most of the book covers classical control). Not a whole lot of Simulink content, mainly Matlab functions used for specific topics. Good example systems.

How things used to be, not how they are today. Old processes, old way of doing things. Unfortunately, there's really nothing else out there to fill the gap - this may be the best available. Be warned, if you want to set up a proactive purchasing department, this is not how to do it.

Material great, paperback poor quality

I purchased this book for a class. The written material is exactly what I needed, but the workmanship of the paperback version is really poor. I knew I was purchasing a paperback, but I didn't expect to get so little for $100. Some pages are already falling out because the glue binding is so shotty.

I used this text at Manhattan College's graduate engineering school and was fortunate enough to be taught by one of the authors. This text covers the material at levels that an undergraduate engineer can grasp, yet is suited perfectly for graduate level training. Written by some of the best people in the business, personally and professionally.

Impractical Viewpoint
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-05
A very unoriginal, simplistic book, written by an academic who perhaps never spent time with real clients. Yegidis imagines seminars and reading can substitute for direct experience with real people with problems. The author does not mention any personal experience doing social work. She only observes others who do the work. Life in a university is very isolated. She'd be surprised at what happens to social workers in the field.

Also much knowledge in "social work" is mostly pseudo-science. Yegidis should read F.A. Hayek's "The Counter Revolution in Science: Studies in the Abuse of Reason" (1979). It explains the subtle flaws and bias in her ideas. (Hayek won a Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974). He'd call Yegidis' work "scientism" which is a false subjective method.

Social Work theory is NOT in the avant-garde of research methods. It is very atavistic and backward. Social work ideology combines a hodgepodge of theories from other fields. This makes it inclusive but incoherent. Nothing great has come out of social work research in the last 100 years. All the innovators are in psychology or communications.

Textbook of last resort
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-03
After teaching a course at the community college level using this book (which I inherited, on short notice), I can honestly say that there must be better options for learning music fundamentals. I am examining other textbooks for next year, and can guarantee that Ottman's will NOT be among them.

Ottman seperates elements that would be best be consolidated (i.e. rhythmic elements). While he suggests an organizational scheme to reorder the book and keep elements together, the way the text is written would obliterate any benefit from doing so. Ottman's writing style is dry, and tends to be overloaded with advanced detail that is best left to a 1st-semester theory class. At times, Ottman can also come across as condescending towards the reader, which irritated my students (and this instructor) greatly.

Ottman also makes the mistake of assuming that everyone who is learning music fundamentals is familiar with, or interested in, classical music. The musical examples included in the book tend to be as dry as his writing style. Some folk songs are simply labeled with the country of origin; without the lyrics, they are just boring. Many other textbooks successfully integrate examples from popular music with the classical examples; this book would benefit from such an integration.

Not all is lost, as Ottman does a decent job with the Appendix, which looks towards serious study of music theory. He also does well with repetition within exercises. The book also includes a detachable keyboard card, which visually links each key with its representation on the grand staff. But generally, these features alone do not merit a recommendation.

This book will teach the practicing musician everything you they could possibly need to know about music theory and notation. As a beginner of music studies, I found it all a bit mind bending at first. My advice is to just hang in there and before you know it, the long words and scary looking notation sections will all make sense. I borrowed this book and am now trying to find a copy to purchase (that doesn't cost over $100 aus) as I know I shall be using it as a reference tool for many years to come. For the serious musician, it's a must have.

This book is about the academic perspective on sales promotion, mainly price based promotions. Although there are very few definitive conclusions; and that more research is needed on the topic, I recommend this collection of research papers to everyone seriously interested in the subject.

This book is so easy to read and everything is organized the same way in each chapter, making note-taking a breeze. Each chapter ends with quizzes and the answers are in the back to check. Also, the website offers an additional quiz in terminology and multiple choice. To prepare for my exams, I simply studied the quizzes at the end of each chapter as well as online and I got an A on every test. I learned a lot about the different sociological viewpoints of each subject studied in each chapter. This textbook is great for students.

I just wish there was a way to get reviews on textbooks. I previewed several books ultimately deciding on this text. Do yourself a favor if you are a teacher and don't touch this book. The information is presented in the most dull way and further everything is DATED. I have never become so frustrated with a text that discusses current race relations with data from the 1980's. If you are considering this text, just glance at some of the data and you will get my point.
