Too sparse for use in a college setting.

The author, in his introduction, describes this as an attempt to create a text for college and graduate level literature and conducting courses. Unfortunately, it is to thin, inconsistent and dated to be of use for any college course. Most information is covered too briefly to be of much help and is at times inconsistent with scholarship that was current when this book was published. Though the reference lists contain a large and balanced list of sources, the ones cited in the text are almost entirely ones from the 1960's and before.

The best use for the text would be by non-college trained choral conductors and possible a freshman introductory course.

Not too deep but complete!

I did not read it all but I became very happy with the some pages I have read today (when I have received it). It is not too deep (35 pages for the Renaissance Choral Music), but there is not too many choral history guides (or I don't know them), and this is quite good and takes under consideration many aspects and parameters of the music of each period (like Society, composers, sort of choirs, musical style and perfomance practice, related arts, references...). But I must tell something, WARNING: it is NOT A FACSIMIL, it is a good normal edition.

Thorough, but difficult to read

Maybe I'm just unfamiliar with the style of a British textbook, but I found it very difficult to follow. The text rambles from one statement to another, with no logical flow, structure or summaries of introduction or conclusion. It's certainly a thorough treatment of the field if your interest is understanding differences in international practice, although it's not targeted at someone who wants to learn to actually perform the accounting.

Broad coverage of major world accounting systems

As a translator who works with Japanese, Chinese, and French financial reports, it is difficult to find up to date books that cover all of the financial systems that I deal with, and I would go broke buying updated books for each country every year.

This book is the next best thing. It gives an introduction to the system used in a particular country and then discusses the basis for differences between systems used in different countries, so that at least one can understand the types of differences one can expect.

It is a given that any book such as this must address Japan as well as major European and North American, but this title is noteworthy for covering China as well.

Consumer Behaviour for Marketing Decisions

DIFFICULT to read, awfully unstructured but meaty enough...

If you're new to Consumer Behaviour, DON'T read this. Read a general (a typical textbook will do) text book to gain familiarity with CB concepts. Otherwise, you may feel a wave of nausea coming over you.

It's a book which is not easy to read at all because the structure of the books is rather weak. However, the contents are meaty in that East does not take any theory as THE theory (and neither should we as CB practitioner-academics or academic-practitioners) - therefore he explores and explores (unfortunately a better structure is needed to convey his ideas). He does prove that theories should not be taken for granted and we should constantly test them. Very difficult to read, but has some good points within it if you can read through it.

This book does not explain the concepts clear enough for beginning electrical engineering students. There are examples, but they are not clear. Also, the book barely touches on the superposition theorem, but it does not mention the more widely used loop analysis method. I would not recommend this book for anyone.

A solid introductory textbook

After seaching an introductory electronics course out of various textbooks for several years, this is the one that I have currently settled on, and it serves my needs very well. The program in which I teach has bright students and a very full curriculum, where class time must be used to it's fullest. The compact organization of this book has allowed me to introduce the essentials of both DC and AC electronics, up to and including the frequency effects of capacitive and inductive circuits, in just one semester. I particularly like the treatment of DC circuits, with a brief introduction followed by it's treatment as a special case of AC in later chapters - very efficient.

I am not concerned with light treatment of mesh or node analysis, as another reviewer has complained, since I omit this coverage in my course anyway, in the interest of time. I am not very concerned with this omission, since in practice circuits of a complexity where such analysis is required are always designed using computer simulations, which both I and this textbook teach.

Centered on Textbooks and the Classroom

The first 90 pages of Roberts book examine basic study skills such as time management, memory, learning styles and critical reading and thinking. The next section is the particular strength of this volume, in which she looks at how to get the most out of your textbook. What follows is over 100 pages that look at how to locate major ideas, get the most out of grapics, identify your texts organizational style and how to study out of it. She finishes by looking at needed skills for the classroom. A useful addition to your library.

not the best...but a useful strategy guide for beginners!

I have a burning fascination for books on effective study strategies. I am always searching for better and more effective strategies to help kids and teens to excell in their school life...also, to help professional adults navigate text information overload as part of their evening academic pursuits.

Judy Roberts's Effective Study Skills is one of these books I have acquired as part of my lifelong search. It is comprehensive...also presents a broad range of study strategies, with quite extensive coverage of reading skills needed to process college textbooks...but still not the best.

However, looking from the standpoint of a beginner in acquiring study strategies, I reckon this book can still serve as a useful strategy guide.

For beginners, the layout of the book's substantial content runs as follows:

- Time Management;
- Concentration & Memory;
- Learning Styles;
- Critical Reading & Thinking;
- Gathering Main Ideas;
- Reading Graphic Illustrations;
- Understanding Organisational Patterns;
- Adopting Vocabulary Acquisition Strategies;
- Study Methods for Textbooks;
- Notetaking, Annotating & Underlining;
- Writing in College;
- Test Taking Skills;

The main reason why I rate it as 'not the best' is because I am comparing it with James Semones's 'Effective Study Skills'. Although the latter book is somewhat long-winded to some extent, I strongly feel it has a much broader scope and also farther depth than Judy Roberts' book. It is also written in a scholarly - albeit serious - manner, very unlike Roberts' book, which is written in an informal and conversational style.

For beginner readers into study strategies - and those who simply don't like long-winded books -, George Usova's 'Efficient Study Strategies' is worth exploring! It gives direct-to-the-point instructions...and also the easiest to read, especially for beginners!

Very frustrating. They have stopped including the CD with the Comprehensive edition and instead tell you to download the lessons that go with the book. Unfortunately the lessons are not at the website posted in the book. I spent 2 weeks trying to get someone, anyone at Prentice Hall to help me. I finally got the lessons (at http://wps.prenhall.com/bp_grauer_exploring2003-1, I think) but there were multiple versions and Im still not sure what all's missing. The first 10 pages are just plugs for other Prentice Hall computer books. Finally the lessons are.. OK. It lead me through the steps to create nice .PPTs, but there is no glossary, and the index is very thin. This is no comprehensive "bible" for looking up specific problems. It's much more of a "one step at a time" do in sequential order book.

While the book does present an accurate and unbiased view of world religions, the text itself is less than gripping (the writing is dry), and the book's organization is a little confusing. This may not be the best text to use if you are interested in getting a clear, overall picutre of a particular religion. It includes studies of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Analysis of Philosophical and Religious Issues
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-09
I use this text in my intro level religion classes. It's not a world religions text however. The book is organized thematically, which can be confusing for non-linear thinkers. For example, if the topic is "religious experience" the text will compare various texts (primary and secondary) from different traditions. Consequently, one can see the similarities and difference between various religious traditions. It's a rather postmodern religious studies text.

At the same time, that may be its weakness. I usually recommend that students have already taken world religions prior to the class where we read this book. It can be a great springboard for discussion and other projects. However for students who don't know much about religion and philosophy (or history, etc) the text may prove a bit superficial. On the other hand, because of how it's organized there is usually something that everyone can relate to.

This book is missing chapters 1-4 didn't realize it until I was about to study and found that the first four chapters were missing, still waiting to hear from my professor if i have to return or if I can use for the rest of the semester...The book looks like it's got a lot of information that can be used independently without the help of an instructor..

many problems
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-26
this book has many problems..

firstly.. it is overly informal...

secondly.. the beginning chapters on the physics and chemistry of semiconductors (ptype n type) are garbage... do atoms really have 2,8,8,8.... configuration in it's energy levels??? NO... we assumed that in grade 10 chem.. just to make it easier.. and the stuff on energy levels is pathetic also... very basic chem/physics...

there are 3 levels of approximations for semiconductors devices... 1st is ideal, 2nd is practical... 3rd is complete... for college level students.. complete approx isn't used.... they use 2nd approx for doing analysis.. and 1st for doing troubleshooting only... yet the author jumps around.. .for clippers clampers and voltage multipliers.. the author does his analysis based on the 1st approx....

then for other sections.. he lays out pages upon pages of formulas.. that really should be common sense (KVL, KCL).. and he sets out formulas for both 1st and second approx.. it's just superfluous...

then the end of chapters exercises are alway slike "refer to the circuit of fig. 4.6.. and use the spec sheets for the 1N400X series of diodes on page 34.. blah blah blah"... it's so annoying flipping around.. i would often do the wrong circuit... for a question..

the book is just not well designed....

I want a professional textbook.. now one for kindergarten kids...

My religion class had to buy this book, otherwise, we probably wouldn't buy it. When I read it, I thought the authors had no passion for the subject.Many times, I would have to read sentences over and over because the wording of the sentences was odd. The authors didn't explain most concepts clearly.

What did I like about the book? Hmmmm... there were some nice pictures. Other than that, there's not much that I like about the book. I give it a 3 because it's tolerable. A typical school textbook.

Ellwood has provided a detailed and clear look at world religions. Attention given to primal and archaic cultures and modern expressions of religion are especially helpful.
