Broad coverage of major world accounting systemsReview Date: 2006-01-15
This book is the next best thing. It gives an introduction to the system used in a particular country and then discusses the basis for differences between systems used in different countries, so that at least one can understand the types of differences one can expect.
It is a given that any book such as this must address Japan as well as major European and North American, but this title is noteworthy for covering China as well.

DIFFICULT to read, awfully unstructured but meaty enough...Review Date: 2001-04-06
It's a book which is not easy to read at all because the structure of the books is rather weak. However, the contents are meaty in that East does not take any theory as THE theory (and neither should we as CB practitioner-academics or academic-practitioners) - therefore he explores and explores (unfortunately a better structure is needed to convey his ideas). He does prove that theories should not be taken for granted and we should constantly test them. Very difficult to read, but has some good points within it if you can read through it.

A solid introductory textbookReview Date: 2005-08-16
I am not concerned with light treatment of mesh or node analysis, as another reviewer has complained, since I omit this coverage in my course anyway, in the interest of time. I am not very concerned with this omission, since in practice circuits of a complexity where such analysis is required are always designed using computer simulations, which both I and this textbook teach.

not the best...but a useful strategy guide for beginners!Review Date: 2002-03-25
Judy Roberts's Effective Study Skills is one of these books I have acquired as part of my lifelong search. It is comprehensive...also presents a broad range of study strategies, with quite extensive coverage of reading skills needed to process college textbooks...but still not the best.
However, looking from the standpoint of a beginner in acquiring study strategies, I reckon this book can still serve as a useful strategy guide.
For beginners, the layout of the book's substantial content runs as follows:
- Time Management;
- Concentration & Memory;
- Learning Styles;
- Critical Reading & Thinking;
- Gathering Main Ideas;
- Reading Graphic Illustrations;
- Understanding Organisational Patterns;
- Adopting Vocabulary Acquisition Strategies;
- Study Methods for Textbooks;
- Notetaking, Annotating & Underlining;
- Writing in College;
- Test Taking Skills;
The main reason why I rate it as 'not the best' is because I am comparing it with James Semones's 'Effective Study Skills'. Although the latter book is somewhat long-winded to some extent, I strongly feel it has a much broader scope and also farther depth than Judy Roberts' book. It is also written in a scholarly - albeit serious - manner, very unlike Roberts' book, which is written in an informal and conversational style.
For beginner readers into study strategies - and those who simply don't like long-winded books -, George Usova's 'Efficient Study Strategies' is worth exploring! It gives direct-to-the-point instructions...and also the easiest to read, especially for beginners!

Analysis of Philosophical and Religious IssuesReview Date: 2005-04-09
At the same time, that may be its weakness. I usually recommend that students have already taken world religions prior to the class where we read this book. It can be a great springboard for discussion and other projects. However for students who don't know much about religion and philosophy (or history, etc) the text may prove a bit superficial. On the other hand, because of how it's organized there is usually something that everyone can relate to.

many problemsReview Date: 2003-01-26
firstly.. it is overly informal...
secondly.. the beginning chapters on the physics and chemistry of semiconductors (ptype n type) are garbage... do atoms really have 2,8,8,8.... configuration in it's energy levels??? NO... we assumed that in grade 10 chem.. just to make it easier.. and the stuff on energy levels is pathetic also... very basic chem/physics...
there are 3 levels of approximations for semiconductors devices... 1st is ideal, 2nd is practical... 3rd is complete... for college level students.. complete approx isn't used.... they use 2nd approx for doing analysis.. and 1st for doing troubleshooting only... yet the author jumps around.. .for clippers clampers and voltage multipliers.. the author does his analysis based on the 1st approx....
then for other sections.. he lays out pages upon pages of formulas.. that really should be common sense (KVL, KCL).. and he sets out formulas for both 1st and second approx.. it's just superfluous...
then the end of chapters exercises are alway slike "refer to the circuit of fig. 4.6.. and use the spec sheets for the 1N400X series of diodes on page 34.. blah blah blah"... it's so annoying flipping around.. i would often do the wrong circuit... for a question..
the book is just not well designed....
I want a professional textbook.. now one for kindergarten kids...

An average textbook.Review Date: 2000-07-21
What did I like about the book? Hmmmm... there were some nice pictures. Other than that, there's not much that I like about the book. I give it a 3 because it's tolerable. A typical school textbook.

The best use for the text would be by non-college trained choral conductors and possible a freshman introductory course.
