A History Major's Best Friend!!!!

For anyone studying European History, this book is a must-have. I used it last year in my college-level history course, and it quickly became my best friend. It contains all the necessary information, and tons more besides. But because the book contains so much useful information, it is quite heavy reading. Its vocabulary and content is intended for the serious historical inquiry, not for people with a casual interest in the subject matter. Still, being a history major, I love this book, and can appreciate its breadth, its depth, its accuracy, and its recounting of history. By far, this is the best and most comprehensive look at European history I've ever seen.

For students of contemporary English history, this is a key resource. Constructed like most textbooks, it offers a lot of information on many different topics, with attention to detail. Interesting read, even for those at the high-school level!

A text book History of England

This book gives an excellent historical background to the history of Britain. It does not present any theories, views, or concentrations, and thus makes a good read for those looking for a thurough basis of British History. I have tried to use this book as a refrence book but often have difficulties as many topics are not focused enough in sections and tend to drag out over the whole chapter. While this makes an excellent scholastic book, I would not recomend it to casual readers.

Practical information, diagrams, and "how to" outlines help any beginner teacher or librarian reach visual learners. Based on the ASSURE model, Smaldino, (et al) offers suggested readings, rubrics, and cheklists to help organize the dissemination of information. Each chapter relates to NETS standards (chart on inside flap) and the last section on Classroom Resources advises on audiovisual presentations and portfolios. Highly Recommended.

Blitzers' step by step is very helpful but does not always use the best path to the solution. He could use more examples of different types of the same problem, ie. What occurs when using negetives on this problem? Great book, but with anything, could be better.

Lots of useful detail; rather unstructured style.

If you want to know about sorting algorithms, including older, less-than-optimal ones, you'll find the information here. Rich has meticulously categorized, coded, and debugged them.

The undisciplined and old-fashioned programming style obscures some of the more complicated algorithms. Recasting them in well-structured code can be a fruitful assignment in a programming course.

'New view' to International Political Economy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-22
Considerable changes that took place after World War II have created a lot of consequences. The demand for economic reconstruction and the emerging of new countries (mainly in Asia and Africa) that released from colonialization are two of the changes that soon happened after the War. Not long after them, the following change appeared, namely, the emergence of non-state actors such as multinational corporations and international organizations (especially that operated in economic and trade area).

Consequently, all of them made the world political landscape differ from it had used to be in pre-World War II. The world political landscape which had used to be dominated by security and military issues changed to be dominated by more various issues, especially economic. This picture was much realized by scholars of international relations. Therefore, they tried to redevelop a study of international political economy, a study that considers economic and politics as spheres that closely related.

One of the scholars is Robert A. Isaak. He himself defines the study as a study of the inequality or asymmetry between nations and peoples and the collective learning and positioning patterns that preserve or change the asymmetry. Differ from other readers of international political economy, he has a specific analysis.

In observing the phenomenon, he neither uses Marxist's point of view nor liberal's. He prefers a 'new view' to taking a side on one of them. His 'new view' is based upon what he called collective learning and positioning. In the essence, this view constitutes a process to differentiate patterns of appropriate adaptive behavior in facing changes without the abandonment of cultural identity.

According to Isaak, the change forced an actor to keep his group from suffering a financial loss. from here, strategic behavior turn up. They are defeatist, free rider, maintenance, and entrepreneurial. These strategic behavior, in Isaak's opinion, have dominated 'struggle for power' in contemporary political/economy arena.

Supported by strong information that happened behind the event and the use of wide range references, Isaak's explanation becomes very convincing. As a textbook in international political economy, this book is very recommended.

for a diverse audience
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-25
The size of this book [1000 pages], and the scope of the topics it covers makes it suitable for perhaps an entire academic year course.

A large portion of the book is linear algebra. Systems of linear equations. Showing how these can arise in real world situations [science and engineering]. And how to solve them. Speaking of which, Blitzer devotes a lot of space to furnishing examples of varying levels of difficulty. Outreaching to as broad an audience as possible. He also provides extensive problem sets in each chapter. Because pragmatically, a portion of the value of a textbook is in saving the instructor from having to come up with such problems.

For students majoring in maths or the physical sciences, this text may actually be unsuitable. If they already have a strong mathematical bent, and even if they do not already know the book's material, it may proceed at too leisurely a pace for them. Since Blitzer is aiming for a diverse crowd; typically not as inherently proficient in maths.

A Chronological Aproach

This book has great plates and is a great picture book. It also approaches the subject of Islamic art in a way unique compared to most introductory western art books. Rather then go chronologically, it breaks the subject up by themes. This works great for this material. This book is very readable, but sometimes a little simplistic. It's a great introduction to the subject.
