are better books on FFT, e.g. Brigham. This one is not for
professionals! You've been warned. For beginners I would recommend books by Zonst. They are much more to the point.
And cheaper! Thanks god I didn't buy it myself!

Ramirez balances theoretical & practical aspects of FFTs.Review Date: 1998-08-27
Throughout the book, basic concepts are initially presented within a mathematical context. Subsequently, they are reinforced with examples. Often, hardcopies of traces from a signal processor's monitor are provided--these are effective in driving home key points.
After reading this book over two days' time, I was left wishing to see a companion volume that adds more on real-life problem solving, plus material on advanced techniques (e.g., cepstrum). This thirst for more knowledge says a lot for the way in which Ramirez motivates.

Excellent Textbook for Literature Students and TeachersReview Date: 2007-08-06
Literature and Society demonstrates how literary techniques serve larger purposes - and how these larger purposes shape literary form.
Among its many unique features, the Second Edition:
* Organizes the literature around five socially relevant themes
- Growing up and Growing older
- Women and Men
- Money and Work
- Peace and War
- Varieties of Protest
* Offers a variety of works by women, African American, ethnic, working class, and other writers traditionally under-represented.
* Includes an introduction to each literary genre, a process-oriented chapter on how to write about literature, and author biographies, discussion questions, and writing exercises for all stories, plays, works of non-fiction, and key poems.
This will remain a trusted resource and reference long after subsequent revisions are released. - 5 Stars.
A Quality Text for College-Level Introduction to LiteratureReview Date: 2005-03-18
I specifically chose this text because I wanted to approach the course from a societal perspective, and I was impressed by the editors'/authors' arrangement: "Growing Up and Growing Older," "Women and Men," "Money and Work," "Peace and War," and "Varieties of Protest." Sometimes, I switch works into other categories, for example, Sylvia Plath's poetry and play THREE WOMEN from "Growing Up and Growing Older" to "Varieties of Protest." But that's a matter of personal preference.
Mr. Leeper is probably correct that a professor may not want to use this particular text for an introductory literature course emphasizing a standard approach or for a writing about literature course. But, certainly, for a higher-level thematic course, such as Literature and Society, this text would no doubt offer an excellent choice.
I like the variety of works; this text could easily cover one or even two semesters of literature, covering not only fiction and poetry thoroughly, but also drama, including known and lesser known playwrights: William Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Lorraine Hansberry, Susan Glaspell and Alice Childress, among others. I would like to see more in-depth creative nonfiction, but, for now, I supplement the text with an inexpensive trade edition of HIROSHIMA. In later editions, the editors might consider adding some longer current and classic creative nonfiction selections, such as memoirs, journalistic features, and biography.
I have only one quibble: cost. I teach at a medium-sized, four-year college in Pennsylvania; most of our students come from blue collar families who struggle to pay for books and supplies, and I like to assign inexpensive books that won't break their budgets.
In this case, however, quality wins out over price, and I can only hope that my students feel that they're getting their money's worth.
Not My Favorite Literature TextReview Date: 2002-05-26
The beginning goes into the writing process and writing about literature. There is an example of writing on poetry, but it is only two paragraph's worth. Most students would like to see the whole essay.
The bulk of the book is arranged in topics, which have subtopics of fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. The topics, "Growing up and Growing Older," "Women and Men," "Money and Work," "Peace and War," and "Varieties of Protest," give you a wide variety of selections to illustrate the idea. Unless you plan on structuring your course this way, this isn't the easiest text to navigate a class through.
The end of the book has a section devoted to each of the subtopics: fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Here, strategies and elements of each of these subtopics are illustrated here. The examples used here refer to selections from the text, which allows the student to refer back. This is a good touch.
I would not recommend this book as long as you are teaching a survey course.

Clear, but why so many modules ?Review Date: 2002-08-08
course in semiconductor device physics, and found the text
really well done, I could allmost give the material verbatim
to the students (except for some calculations where some
more additional steps needed to enlighten some of them).
Most of the basic aspects of semiconductor physics, having
an impact on the practical characteristics of real devices
are treated and follow logically from the theory that is
exposed in the volumes.
The only thing that I found strange is: why so many small
modules, which are anyway interdependent ? Wouldn't one
decent book have been a better idea ?

It is not for novices and math background is required to fully exploit all the chapters devoted to data clustering for proper map layer design.
Definitely worth reading.
Thematic Cartography and Geographic Visualization, Second EditionReview Date: 2008-01-20
This book is the required text for a Cartography course I am taking as part of a degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The text is well written, and very well organized. The chapters are short enough and deliver the right amount of theory to be read and absorbed in one sitting. The book addresses classical cartographic issues as well as modern digital mapping and GIS.
Where the book fails miserably is in its layout. I expect that a book that costs as much as this one did, and which relies on colour plates will be printed in full colour from cover to cover. However, all the colour plates have been collected near the back of the book. This wouldn't be a big deal but for the constant references in the text inviting one to make comparisons between the black and white figures which are inset, and colour plates at the back: lot's of flipping back and forth, breaking the flow.
Like I said, the contents is very good, but for $121, you can keep the hard cover, but give me a full colour textbook with inset colour figures and diagrams.
Best Cartography Textbook Review Date: 2005-12-17
It is not tied to any particular software (such as ArcGIS). This could be a minus if you are trying to teach yourself. It is also quite expensive. However, it can be used in multiple courses.

Good choice for the lover of "ALL" things about FILMSReview Date: 2003-08-16
Thorough and readable introduction to history of cinemaReview Date: 2004-12-26
Sklar is an excellent writer, who is able to sum things up in ways that are clear, accurate and precise. Each chapter covers a period in the history of cinema in such a way that even without knowing all the films he mentions you can still get a rough idea of what the trends were, that would form a space for subsequent learning. You'd get even more details, say, in the Oxford History of World Cinema, but what I like about Sklar's book is that it feels a bit more like a coherent and continuous narrative.
He does a great job moving back and forth between various national cinemas and the dominant Hollywood tradition, showing how Hollywood (and American cinema generally) put its stamp on world cinema while at the same time identifying the ways in which national cinemas developed their own identity in distinction from and sometimes in reaction to the influence of Hollywood. There is much to recommmend Sklar's approach, and if you want a manageable tome that gives enough detail for a basic grasp without being overwhelming, I can't think of a better text.
