I personally have met Dr. Plant, and I would never have purchased this book if it wasn't required for this class. Dr. Plant last worked in industry almost 20 years ago, and has spent those years in an academic silo. He's certainly no expert, and this book is evidence of it. As someone who has actually implemented e-business solutions for a number of large companies, Dr. Plant's 'ideas' are worthless in the real world. This book is more marketing hype and 'internet bubble' dreamery than reality. Save your money. (And if you are forced to take his class, try to get out of it.)

This book is very informative on starting an ECommerce site. I especially like the instruction it gives on PLANNING the website and strategy beforehand. The book also discusses the important elements of creating a website, one being Top Management buy in.

Required reading for IT professionals too!

Review Date: 2001-04-12
My expectations from this book were twofold: (1) gain insights into the business value of e-commerce so I could have a fuller understanding of how my role as a service delivery consultant fit into the bigger picture, and (2) see the implementation strategy from the business process owner's point of view. This book fully met my expectations and provided further insights that I did not expect.

An an IT professional my point of view is different from the intended audience of this book and this is reflected in my review. First, this book provided my with an opportunity to observe the business forces that drive the systems that I support. I gained a good understanding of the business imperatives, as well as the challenges that the business face when developing an e-commerce strategy. From this I gained an appreciation of how the projects that IT initiate are first conceived and was able to see the direct link between these projects and how they ultimately relate to business objectives. These insights are valuable and inspire me to seek ways to better align my domain, service delivery, to business goals.

I also gained a much greater understanding or the many faces of e-commerce, such as the unique requirements of business-to-customer as contrasted with, for example, business to business. From my vantage point prior to reading this book it was just a collection of applications and interfaces. After reading this book I see beyond the technology itself to the real purposes and their associated goals.

This book also contains information that is directly applicable to my profession. The ownership issues and e-strategy leadership chapters gave me a clear view of who the real stakeholders are, which is of the utmost importance to service delivery. This information sparked some ideas about support strategies and other issues that I need to consider with respect to e-commerce systems from an IT perspective. Equally important is the chapters on the roll out strategy, which is a space where I have a definite role, and the scorecard approach to measuring the effectiveness of an internet strategy. The latter gave me some clear ideas about how to align IT service delivery to business stakeholders in the e-commerce domain.

In my opinion this book is as applicable to IT professionals as it is to business process owners and decision makers. It gives the business side a clear understanding of the factors and issues that go into an e-commerce strategy, and an approach to developing and implementing the strategy. It gives the IT professional some unique insights on that drives the requirement to develop and implement e-commerce systems and shows areas where we can add value to the process and help assure a successful implementation.

eCommerce another powerful channel

The book is excellent but misses out on highlighting the really big successes that established brick and mortar companies gain by adding the Internet as part of their multi-channel marketing, distribution, manfacturing and design and development activities of products and services.

These multi-channel organizations will do 80% of the eCommerce on a global basis. The author should come out with a sequel with a lot of case studies of the incredible success stories of multi-chanel organizations use of Internet technologies.

Review Date: 2008-04-26
As an Ethics Board member for local government I recommend Profit Without Honor: White Collar Crime and the Looting of America, Fourth Edition. Most of the book relates to the private sector, but it provides case studies on fraud, political corruption, illegal union busting and many other cases of fallen honor and how profit lured its victims in their betrayal of governmental responsibilities.

It points to the many high profile cases of fraud and the ability of people that had been entrusted with public confidence to decieve and how they came to risk it all. Many stepped up to the plate with strong statements in court or to the media professing their innocence, stating that "they never" one example is congressional testimony from sports stars that "I have never used steroids."

The reading of these cases will sensitize the reader to schemes and thought processes of those that perpetrate white collar crime. Profit Without Honor is perfect for those of us interested in the study of Applied Ethics and the complexities of making the right choice, the honorable choice and the choice that is best for the community and not for personal profit. Fast, interesting and informative read.

I utilize Profit Without Honor as one of the required textbooks in an college course I teach at Herkimer County Community College entitled CJ 122: Intoduction to Economic Crime Investigation.

I find the book is quite comprehensive, extensively researched and very well written. There is just enough theoretical foundations along with a true plethora of historical and recent examples to educate and inform. My students have received the book very well, commenting that while it is far reaching it is also a fairly easy "read" that isn't to confusing or overwhelming. It's my opinion that Profit Without Honor is an excellent introductory text to aquaint the casual reader or the student with the far reaching, comprehensive nature of economic crime, white collar crime and fraud present today.

I look forward to a third edition when recent incidents such as Enron, Arthur Anderson, WorldCom etc. would hopefully be addressed.

As a side note, the fraud realted quotes from motion pictures that serve as chapter headings are hilarious! (i.e. Teacher: What is the capital of Nebraska? First Student: Lincoln. Teacher: Right. Who freeded the slaves? Second Student: Lincoln Teacher: Right. Charles Keating cooked the books at what S&L? Third Student: Lincoln?)

A great book!

PROFIT WITHOUT HONOR combines immaculate scholarship, penetrating insight, and a witty and engaging style of writing. Readers will find material that will trigger righteous indignation, and insights that will make them nod in agreement and wonder why they hadn't thought of that. The authors provide a vast array of information on white-collar offenses that challenges current concentration on street law-breaking as the most serious crime problem in the United States.

This book has been vital in teaching the basics of English grammar. Things like active/passive voice, prepositions, and pronouns are presented here with exercises to allow instruction and follow-up.

This book is a great tool for instruction. I've used it with highschoolers through adults, and it is invaluable.

I use the Regents English Workbook to help students who can't grasp basic grammar. I teach 9th graders to college Sophmores. Workbook 1 is good for 9-10 graders, 2 for upperclassmen, and I use 3 for my college students. The exercises are clear and give some introduction to the material. The answer key at the back lets students check their progress, and the exercises are fairly comprehensive.

The only problem I really have with the books is how they jump around. I think author was trying to hit problems in order of most to least common. This lack of structure can be confusing however, if you want to work on a specific area you know you have trouble in.

This little book is packed with useful practice pages for beginning to intermediate ESL students. Each page includes practice sentences on one particular skill--prepositions, irregular verbs, pronouns, etc. I have found it to be extremely useful with my adult ESL students. After teaching a particular English skill, possibly with a different text, I find that looking up a specific page in the table of contents and using it as reenforcement and extra repetitive practice to be very helpful. My students agree with me, and several have asked me to order a copy for them. It's great!

This is the best textbook for earth system science
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-07
Earth System Science is a new field, one that evolves much more quickly than textbooks can be revised. This one is as current as you can expect, and it approaches the field of science in a much better way than any other textbook I have seen. In particular, most earth system texts approach the field by morphing from a traditional discipline. Usually, it's a geology textbook revised to include atmospheric, oceanic, and climatic studies. But earth system science requires an interdisciplinary approach from the start, a problem based approach. Our global environmental problems need this approach, and this book covers them in a reasonably detailed and accurate manner.

Kump has worked with James Lovelock of 'Gaia' fame on modelling Daisyworld. I'll let the reviewer discover what that means in this title.(But also see REVENGE OF GAIA, 2006, for Lovelock's predictions for our heating planet).
This is the best book for geoscientists and geographers in training who have an interest in climate past, present, and future. An excellent college level scientific supplement to popular works on climate change and earth systems science.

A Great Introduction to Earth

Review Date: 2007-05-23
I read this book outside of a class context. I am not well-versed in chemistry or geology (both are very important in earth science), but I was able to understand a majority of The Earth System. The book is lucidly written and provides a fine analysis of the dynamics of both small and large-scale planetary change.

I bought and read The Earth System with the goal of understanding the science behind global warming: little did I know what a tall order that was! Global climate is enormously complex and contains far more variables than the layman would imagine. Scientists do not and probably will not understand global warming in the same way that they understand less complex phenomena.

The climate system is Chaotic. The best we can do is understand the causal relations that exist within it, plug observed data into computers, and hope that the predictions based on computer modeling will be accurate.

Current modeling technology will predict today's climate by running simulations on what we know of conditions on Earth 150 years ago. The agreement between a variety of simulations that predict future climate based on current conditions is the basis of the scientific consensus that global warming will occur.

I'm a prof at a small liberal arts college, and I love using this text in my upper level course on global change. It works well with non-science majors, as well as with the more advanced science students. It does a superb job with climate change science, which is one of the major focii in my course. It doesn't hesitate to use real physics, math, and chemistry, yet at the same time is accessible to the non-science folks. Lee Kump is one of the premiere geoscientists in the field, and he has lent his broad understanding to this excellent text. It might also be fun to simply read the book if you are not a student.

This is a book about drawing inferences from the bidding to help you select the correct suit to lead. Successful leading is far more complex than just thinking "4th best from my longest suit" or top of a sequence. If the opponents have the suit stopped, and are poised to run another suit (and discard losers) you are in a desperate situation and may have to make a risky attacking lead from a shorter suit.

I also liked Hugh Kelseys Improve your Opening Leads. The Blackwood book on Opening LEds has good examples on using the Rule of 11 to deeduce suit lengths, and card holdings.

A Classic

Review Date: 2004-05-30
This book goes far beyond what to lead based on your hand. (i.e top of a sequence, or 4th best)

The author presents the reader with many bidding scenarios and ask you what to lead, based on the bidding. Then he explains the correct lead. He spends most of the book explaining how to look for clues from the bidding. Plus he presents some interesting lead directing bids and doubles.

Only for those who want to invest some time in improving this vital aspect of the game.

*BEWARE* that the same person posted 4 reviews here and gave the book 5 stars each time, skewing the results.
Its a great book, but I dislike people who skew the ratings on purpose.

Review Date: 2003-08-17
I was disappointed. The book does contain some interesting thoughts, but 90% of the content is a description of companies facing marketing problems (case studies with a lot of facts). The author doesn't offer the solutions and best practises that would help solve these problems. While reading this book, i felt i was eating a burger without meat. Something is missing...

This is a good book for teachers who want case studies for their students to work on. It's a classroom book. It's not a good book if you want want to read marketing theory and best practises (if you're already in the management world).

The information presented is very thought-provoking and possibly life changing. As with all of the Seth books, the message is that you are MUCH more than you're personality. I found it annoying, however, that Robert Butts included his PERSONAL notes. They were HIGHLY unecessary and, since he was writing while " Seth " was dictating, he would actually write the WORD "semicolon" or "period" whenever "Seth" called for one. The editing is bad. Overall, though, this book IS powerful in that it gave me a larger view of creation and my place in it, which is why I read books of this nature.

Review Date: 2007-10-25
Intended for advanced Seth readers, this manuscript delves into the soul/time/space conundrum as well as the connection between dreams and parallel realities. While the Seth information was channeled forty years ago, I consider Seth to be the father of the new age and self-help movement. Far from some pat oversimplification of how we create reality, Seth leads the reader, step by step, into the incredibly complex nature of the soul and how we are all ultimately connected with each other, God. I read and reread, probably only a few pages at a time, as the material is so spiritually stimulating yet thick with new information that it must be digested (at least for me) a little at a time. The authenticity of the material is indisputable making this (as well as all Seth books) an essential read for any sincere seeker.

This beats out any of the books (3) I've read about the subject. This book coupled with ICND from Cisco and some practice with a couple of real routers or simulated should definitely be enough. It was very easy reading - yet informative. Subnetting can be nasty but this guy makes it easy in my opinion. I passed the exam with flying colors as a result. I've lent the book out on three occasions and everyone was happy with it compared to other books out there. I think the secret is that it actually teaches you as opposed to memorizing what may be on the test. I hope this guy writes for advanced exams.

This is an EXCELLENT practical book for the CCNA 2 exams.

If there were a LAB EXAM on the CCNA 2 test, this book would be in the same category as that by Andrew Bruce Caslow for the CCIE Lab.

It is the only CCNA book I have come across that TRULY gives you the hands-on experience that you need on the job whilst preparing you for the CCNA exams.

It adopts the same approach recommended by Andrew Bruce Caslow, the author of the best-selling CCIE lab book - "Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers, and Switchees For CCIE's" (Prentice Hall), through a THOROUGH and SYSTEMATIC APPROACH to configuring and troubleshooting Cisco devices, thereby helping you to understand the practical aspects of what you are learning.

This book would definitely make you feel as though you are in the workplace in view of the many PRACTICAL LAB SCENARIOS introduced in Chapter 5 and gradually built up through to 14. It is also packed full of robust diagrams that help you the learning process.

In my view, this is the BEST CCNA 2 book out there. A SUPERB book for those willing to put their Cisco skills into practice without simply cramming to pass the exams.

Well done Mr Myhre.

Ok here is the skinny, I did notice the errors in the book, some of the explanations I had to read over and over as well as check online sources ...This is the recommended procedure for doing anything, I feel for those who read books and expect authoritative definitions. Anyways I picked up this book with no knowledge of Cisco Infrastructure----thats right zippo, I work at a Helpdesk position reccomending products including cisco. This book in a month helped me get a 924 on the CCNA exam. In fact I thought the exam was rather simple. The book was easy reading and I never fell asleep once, unlike tood lammelle's books. So this is the answer, if you want CCNA read this book. Has some errors but that shouldn't hinder your progress any. I WILL be purchasing the BCSN by Mr. Myhre.

I'm the third person to post a review on this book. The first person said he hasn't read the book but the instructor was great in a classroom. And he posted a review on the book?

I have no doubt the author is a great instructor, however, the errors in this book may not be his fault at all. I understand mistakes will be made in printing, but there were mistakes in the PRACTICE TESTS ANSWERS! Mistakes IN the answers and then in spellings. There are many mistakes throughout the book that will hopefully be corrected when the next edition is published. I'm glad I understood some of these concepts before I read this book. Otherwise I'd be going into the CCNA Exam with the wrong knowledge. Again, I'm not taking digs at the author, but the book has too many mistakes printed in it in the wrong places! (un hem.....the practice test answers)

Also, I was hoping the CD was going to be an interactive test prep software. I was WRONG! It's only a Network Management Program. Why would anyone want one of these when they are PREPARING for a CCNA exam. The book would have been worth the money if it was a test prep CD.

Last thing, the Labs and Scenario's.....were we supposed to buy our own Routers to participate in these labs? How was one supposed to do the labs if we don't own routers, switches, cables, etc.....am I expecting too much from this book? For(this much)...I think not. If I'm not being fair...please someone...let me know. Give me another point of view! I don't think this edition is worth the money. If the included CD was something that would help for test preparations....then it might be worth the price.

I can disagree about the ease of understanding and the knowledge of Stephen Robbins, but Prentice Hall, the publisher of this book, has blown it. This book is filled with typos and misspellings.

For a $120+ book, I would hope they would put it in front of a copy editor.

I Used this book for the Organizational Theory and Behavior class at Columbia Southern University. Easy to read through, and more valuable information in this book than in my last 6 management texts put together. I haven't read any other OB texts though, so I don't know how this one compares with others.

Overall great book covering all the concepts.....

This book is a very easy read. Used it for a CTUonline.edu master's class on organizational behavior. I think almost all organizational behavior-related books cover mostly the same topics. I mean you either know your people or you don't. It's applied psychology. What made this book somewhat unique is that it often cited real life case studies of companies. It also offered various arguments and counterarguments of the different topics that the book covered, such as "does flextime lead to increased productivity?" and "can you teach leadership?"

Good Book

Before you get "American Cinematographer Manual" which is a technical manual for shooting on film you will probably want to start with something that explains the ins and out of the motion picture camera and how to shoot on film. This book does just that.

Essentially the book deals with all the different formats of motion picture cameras, their internal mechanisms and threading paths. Then the book goes on to dealing with motion picture film itself, the various brands that are available, differences between black and white, color, color reversal and negatives along with a bit about the development process of each one. It is not technically detailed, it just describes and illustrates each one so that you will understand more about them and how they are used. The book then deals with lenses and how to frame your shots and covers a good bit about exposure, fps, filters and lighting.

This is an excellent starters manual and will get you up and running with your motion picture camera in no time. However when you are shooting on film you will need something like the "American Cinematographer Manual" for technical details on focusing the lens, threading the type of camera you have and exposure adjustments for filters.

As a note, there is a lot of new digital cinematography cameras on the up and coming that work on digital video tape and not film and many new filmmakers may be advised to check out this route as a cheaper and less costly way of shooting their first film.

Excellent starters book for the first time cinematographer

This book may be a little dated in terms of it's information but it's well worth it in the small tidbits of information that is within this book. It's title is cinematography but it covers almost all of the aspcects of production. From cameras to lighting and editing. There are even a few exapmles contracts and various film forms in the apendix. Theinformation is layed out in a very simple manner making it very digestable to virtually anyone. I used this book to help me when I had questions lighting on a video project I was working on. Essential for first time filmmakers/DP's althought it's in need of an update.

A great tech starting point

A pretty easy read, with enough technical info to actually be helpful without being so dull it glazes you over. A good selection of charts and graphs regarding everything from POV, to lighting, and editing. For the first time cinematographer, this is a great starting reference.

This book doesn't need 1,000 words - it speaks for itself. We recommend it to all our students as THE text book to have. An excellent primer before moving on to specialist books. I don't want to be responsible for our students spending a fortune on books, so I tell them that if they can only afford one, then this is the one to get. The problem with many film books is that you can spend a fortune on getting the wrong ones. This is the only one you need to learn all the basics before you specialise.

This book is written for committed students of the filmic arts who are willing to put heart, soul, and wallet into the process of learning filmmaking. Technically literate, savvy, and still readable by a neophyte, this book makes comprehensible the mysteries of an art whose main practicioners have otherwise tried to make look harder than it is. If you're going to follow the precepts in this book, however, expect to part with a minimum of $25,000 before you shoot your first frame.
