finally a book that isn't for beginners

I was glad to actually come across a book that was catered towards people who had a bit of experience with making beats. Most of these sorts of books are always for people who want to start from scratch. It's not like it's a book for experts and beginners can't pick this up, infact it could be useful to most. People with a lot of experience could find something in there worth the buy, and people who are relatively new to the world of remixing, (but really it caters to beat making in general) or have some experience under their belt, should be able to find a whole lot of useful information.

As cheesy as the title might be, this book is quality.

Changed my whole perspective on electronic music production

Back in 1999, I started playing with loop sequencing and over the years have assembled a few dozen tracks. I most recently started getting hardware to support my music endeavours, and I stumbled across this book in a bookstore. When I flipped through it, I knew this would be the one as it covered all of the aspects of remixing and editing. Going in depth, arguably its best chapters are on sound design and mixing. I have discovered a new language, and now I can go back to all of my computer music magazines and actually understand what they are talking about. Knowing how to visualize what you are doing to sound made all the difference for me and now I can program my own synths.

The other aspect I really liked about this book was that the tips from real musicians were particularly englightening. Seeing how deep these other musicians go to get their sound inspired me to become more flexible in my approach to writing music.

Definitely a great buy.

I really enjoyed reading Fracis Preve's "The Remixer's Bible". He keeps it light and fun while still giving you a ton of tricks and insight into remixing and sound design. I would recommend this book for beginners to experts. I also really like the history lessons around certain sounds and the gear that was used to make it. I also like the format of the book as its broken up into lots of smaller sections that you can read and then try out.

This is such a wonderful song book and the piano pieces are very easy. My friends and I sit at my piano for hours singing and playing the songs of "Rent" from this amazing book. I've used it for almost all of my auditions and I've gotten wonderul parts! I reccomend this easy-learing piano book for all people who fiddle around with their piano's figuring out the begining of "Seaons of Love!" (Like I did myself!)

I am absolutely in love with RENT and have been since the first time I saw it. This book is everything anyone who ever loved RENT needs.

One thing though...don't get the paperback version because thats what I got the first time I order it and when it arrived it was "Easy Piano" apparently they made a mistake and the hardback is the RENT Bible and the paperback is the piano music. Just don't want anyone else to make the same mistake I did.

Many of the activities contained within Goodkin's manual instantly bring a smile to the face of my students. They are easy to implement and teach others, while promoting great creativity. Many of the activities are invaluable with respect to teaching syllabication as well. If you are in search of a great text to use for teaching in a classroom, or in an informal setting, This one can't be beat! I heartily give this manual and author a double thumbs up!

IT'S ALL AN ILLUSION !

WOW! Now here is a Great book, I've often been Puzzled by some of the Rhythms I've heard in either Modern Music or some of the Jazz or Fusion Music I've been listening to and I've not been able to figure them out, But finaly here is a book that Explaines much of it, and it's funny that some of these Illusions are quite simple actualy, that is in theory, But in practise they can be very difficult, at least some of them.

This Book is for the drumset, I don't play the drumset but bought it anyway because these Rhythm concept can be applied to any instrument.

The Book deals with many Rhythm concept like Beat displacement, Modulation, Rhythmic scales and Polyrhythm, ther's a lot of Material here and I must agree with Bill Bruford in his Foreword to the book "I've got Work to Do".

Other good books that deal with some of these things are "Rhythm and Meter Patterns By Gary Chaffee" and "Polyrhythms by Peter Magadini".

Interesting stuff to develop over a long time

Great book. Very interesting stuff that you've heard Simon Phillips, Vinnie Collaiuta, and the like do forever. this takes the "mystery" out of some elusive concepts and gives you a systematic way to develop the tools. It's kind of like the Chaffee material in that it is very well laid out, systematized, and organized to go through all (or most) of the permutations. Especially great if you're disciplined enough to go through it a little bit at a time b/c it's not easy stuff. It can give you a bit of a headache. Once the concepts, feel of the displacements and modulations, and application of the material within a musical context are together, you're going to impress a lot of people.

Great Book for the Beginning Guitarist
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-08
Written for the beginning guitarist, "Rock Guitar Chords and Accompaniment" provides a thorough introduction to rock guitar playing. The book consists of six chapters with the first chapter covering the basics of the guitar, tuning, notation, major scales, and chords. The second chapter gets deeper into the guitar and music theory and covers slash notation, major triads, dominant 7, minor triads, power chords, and 12-bar blues. Next comes a chapter on barre chords and shifting techniques. The fourth chapter is the final one on basic guitar technique and covers fingerpicking and arpeggios. All of these first four chapters are the foundation of all guitar playing and should be understood by anyone interested in learning to play the guitar. Starting with the fifth chapter Mr. Arakawa moves into the rock music genre by covering the most common distinguishing characteristic of rock guitar playing - rock riffs. The chapter covers the important techniques of hammer-on, pull-off, slide, bend, and vibrato. When it comes to the riffs he examines all the most common ones including single-note, power-chord, double-stop, and small-chord. The techniques covered are all the most common ones necessary for rock style from early rock-and-roll to heavy metal. Chapter six finishes off the book with coverage of amplifiers and special effects. The book is well illustrated and easy to follow as you progress along a well-designed learning pathway. When it comes to rock music you would be hard pressed to find a better beginner book that explains the basic concepts and the specifics of the various rock styles as well as this one. "Rock Guitar Chords and Accompaniment" is a highly recommended read for the beginning guitarist wanting to learn rock technique.

I ordered this songbook while directing a production of The Rocky Horror Show to use until the actual score arrived. It is surprisingly accurate, and actually contains more information on vocals than the score does. It was perfect for auditions and saved me from disaster during early rehearsals (since the score arrived 2 weeks later than I needed it)!

The Rolling Stone Interviews: 1967-1980 : Talking With the Legend of Rock and Roll

Filled with wonderful memories

Rolling Stone Interviews will strike magical chords in everyone. The book, edited with deep affection by Jann S. Wenner and Joe Levy, binds together reprinted interviews with famous people taken from Rolling Stone Magazines spanning nearly forty years. Starting with Pete Townsend of the Who in 1968 before the release of Tommy, and ending with U2's front man Bono in 2005, the interviews capture and frame a chunk of modern history in a truly unique fashion.

For those unfamiliar with the interviews of Rolling Stone, it's not just about music. Captured in raw form are the thoughts and feelings of directors like George Lucas after the release of the original smash hit Star Wars, and actors like Jack Nicholson after 1983's Best Picture Oscar went to Terms of Endearment. There are interviews with comedian Robin Williams, talk show hosts Johnny Carson and David Letterman, and writers like Tom Wolfe, all stand-out artists in their own right.

The most striking features of the book are the voices. It's rare in a non-fiction title to capture so much passion. John Lennon's interview in 1971 shortly after the breakup of the Beatles has more guttural honesty than a priest's confession. Kurt Cobain's 1994 interview captured shortly before his suicide lays out personal demons and screams for help. Bill Clinton's interview from 2000 breathes enough soul-searching sage advice to garner empathy from any hardened Republican. And there's more.

It must have been difficult to choose which interviews to include in the book. Of the multiple Eric Clapton interviews from various issues of the magazine, how could someone pick just one? Likewise, I'm not sure I would have voted for the Axl Rose saga to be included. But I'm thankful for what is there, all in one place.

Where else could you find the thoughts of the Dalai Lama just pages away from those of Ozzy Osbourne?

Armchair Interviews says: If you love music and the entertainment business-and strong stories and writing, this book is for you.

ROCK HISTORY IN THE WORDS OF THE ONES WHO MADE IT
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-22
The presses of Rolling Stone magazine began to roll in San Francisco in the midst of a world-shaking consciousness-raising wake-up call centered around music, peace, and love. Many magazines published interviews, but The Rolling Stone Interview was definitive--in the interviewee's own words, unedited, uncensored, and whatever amount of space needed.

This book includes important interviews from 1967 to 1980 with some of the most great musicians of the time. Their words are as timeless as the music.

Ralph Gleason was a SF music columnist with an ear for great music from the jazz era to the emerging music of the mid 60s. Gleason joined with Rolling Stone Founder/Publisher Jann Wenner and contributed crucial reviews about the local bands and musicians. (Those columns alone would make an important book about the times.) Gleason did a Rolling Stone Interview with Bob Dylan in 1967. Dylan was interviewed again in 1969 by Wenner. The amazing 1972 Rolling Stone Interview with Jerry Garcia was a conversation with Wenner and Charles Reich.

The book is illustrated with photographs.

When I first opened up this book and discovered an autographed picture of Halie Selassie I was frankly shocked, but (and these are the little tidbits of trivia that make this book a fascinating read) believe it or not, Willie Nelson gave the African despot guitar lessons in the late 60's when they were both in Harar for the Lewd Thomas Festival. A terrific read with literally thousands of chord break-downs and hands-on rhythms for the beginner. A unique crash-course! Also, what I liked the best, was the the easy-to-stuff pinsize cut-outs and the cathedral-like layouts of otherwise impossible accordion progressions. If you own one book on your shelf, besides Robert Anton Wilson, this will be the pie for the goose. Highly recommended.

Contray to the comments posted by Lee Potchka, this book does not contain a picture of Hailie Selassie (autographed or otherwise) and it has NO chord break-downs or rhythms. And I have no idea what Potchka meant by "easy-to-stuff pinsize cut-outs and the cathedral-like layouts of otherwise impossible accordion progressions," lol. This book is a guide to the purchase, care and use of acoustic guitars, focusing primarily on their physical characteristics. Examples of topics covered include tips on buying a guitar, a thorough description of the differences between steel-stringed acoustics and classical (nylon-stringed) guitars illustrated with clearly labeled diagrams, and information on care, maintenance, and storage. It has a very useful glossary that doubles as an index, and includes many helpful illustrations. I would recommend it to anyone getting ready to buy their first guitar, especially someone who is unsure of what kind of guitar they want or what to look for in selecting one. Tuning is discussed, and there are some basic practice and playing tips, but this is not a book on how to play the guitar or what to play on it. I presume Potchka's review was meant to go with a different book, because the comments in it bear no resemblance to this one.

Really nice transcription of Sarah's Afterglow. The songs, when played on the piano, sound just about right, except for the fact that the melody line is always there. They definitely need a little interpretation here and there, but all in all this is great. The music is wonderful to play in itself, and singing to it is also fun (as long as you don't compare yourself to Sarah!). I haven't tried many of the songs with the guitar chords, but they also seem to be in line.

A perfect gift for any musician who's a fan of Sarah-even the not-quite-so-fanatics will enjoy. The piano is not too advanced, and the guitar chords are diagrammed along with the music. This is really a wonderful book of music.

I loved it the instant I started playing it, what else can I say? The transcriptions are quite accurate and sound good on the piano. The vocal part requires that you listen to the CD to know what it is actually supposed to sound like on the verses, as Sarah changes them a bit. The piano part is a good mix of the original piano part plus some of the synth and guitar parts, a mix that is very pleasing to the ear. Enjoy!
