Two hundred Vietnam vets (women and men both) ranked this book among the top five "oral histories" from the war, and those five oral histories among the top fifteen books from the Vietnam War period. The other four? EVERYTHING WE HAD (Santoli), NAM (Baker), CASUALTIES (Brandon) and BLOODS (Terry). All offer women-vet voices as moving as Walker's collection. (Comments by the author of DREAM BABY.)

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very interesting to read the Q&A's with some of Americas greatest playwrights. I especially enjoyed the interviews with Edward Albee, Neil Simon and Wendy Wasserstein.
These playwrights answered a variety of questions. Everything from working with actors and directors, to how to handle the critics. Even giving background on how these playwrights got into writing in the first place. There are a variety of topics covered.
A very informative book for anyone interested in the art and business of writing plays. You will learn directly from the playwrights experiences and stories.

As a theatre major I'm on the constant lookout for good books on modern playwrights. This book is an invaluable resource for theatre lovers. The interview with Terrence McNally is especially wonderful. A must have for active theatre-goers.

The Pleasure Of Influence: Conversations With American Male Fiction Writers is a selection of eleven interviews conducted by Rob Trucks which present the wit and wisdom of eleven accomplished writers, including Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Olen Butler, and National Book Award winner Charles Johnson. These skilled and talented literary tale-tellers speak of their work, their inspiration, their operations both within and beyond commonly embraced boundaries, in this thoughtful, erudite collection which is very highly recommended reading, especially for those who aspire to become novelists themselves.

Rob Trucks is a great inteviewer and this collection shows why. Like a great referee in a basketball game, you rarely notice his presence--instead he simply asks smart, interesting questions then backs off and lets the writers go with the question where they will. Also, check out his book of interviews with baseball players called A Cup of Coffee--equally good.

This is great for general reading on Foucault. It does a great job tying together a lot of the things Foucault tried to say in his books. If you're a policy debater trying to become a Foucault buff, get this book. The chapter on critique does an excellent job drawing the distinction between criticism and transformation. It's good stuff :)

Anyone who's been to a quant finance interview knows how difficult some of the analytical and technical questions can be. I recently bought this book (thank you, Amazon Prime!) to prepare for an upcoming interview, and was really impressed by the 200+ questions the author has collected as well as provided detailed solutions for. I've definitely seen some of the questions in real before, so I believe the author when he says these are real-world questions. This is a valuable guide for anyone going into quant interviews. If you're a newbie to the quant job market, this book goes well with another book, written by this book's editor, called Starting Your Career as a Wall Street Quant: A Practical, No-BS Guide to Getting a Job in Quantitative Finance and Launching a Lucrative Career which is more about general advice and tips.

What I like most about this book is that it has detailed step by step solutions to the many many real world interview questions included in it. It explains how to approach common (and many not so common) problems --from analyzing the problem, breaking it down to its parts, to arriving at a good answer. It changes the way one thinks rather than provide mechanical canned answers.. Unlike a few other books that have been in the market this one has greater breadth and depth.I'd recommend the book to both job seekers and interviewers.

As a lit scholar, this is one of my favorite books! I was in grade school when this material first appeared, but still I can see why it sparked a whole movement. Holmstrom's blend of irreverence, honesty, and sheer enthusiasm must've seemed radical during the self-indulgent, PC Seventies. But for all its hilarity and straightforward charm, Punk's material works on several levels. Just check out the famous interview/comic book story on Lou Reed from the first issue--the punks' attitudes turn what would have been a disaster for any other journalist into a telling victory. Like the Ramones, this magazine showed that you can be brilliant and not make a fuss about it; humor, common sense, and a no-bs attitude show more wisdom than any number of convoluted Jethro Tull lyrics. All this, and an exclusive interview with Boris and Natasha!
It's not often that a magazine from almost 25 years ago seems as fresh now as it did back then. We are still in need of Holmstrom's and Legs' rakish sense of fun, although their work has left obvious imprints on our culture--the Simpsons, for one, could not have been without Punks' art & attitude. Buy one for yourself, and more for all of your friends; they will be your friends for life.

Nothing gets better then the crazy yet brillant minds of John Holmstrom and Legs McNeil. Every word in this compolation will make you laugh, I promise!!!! It is history in the making and they opened the doors for so many other magazines. In fact they have a new issue out now too! 25 Years later!!

As an artist and mother of a toddler with another on the way, I found this book invaluable in helping me see that I am not alone in my frustrations & struggles of balancing my two passions.
There are 11 artists and 14 writers interviewed. While I couldn't relate to every woman featured, I took bits of advice and perspective from most of them. It was the first book I've ever read on this topic and it made me hungry for more.
I've listed the artists & writers interviewed below:
Artists:
Linda Vallejo, Alisa Saar, Sarah Charlesworth, Roxanne Swentzell, Bea Nettles, Karen Horn, Elizabeth Murray, May Stevens, Trina Schart Hyman, Betye Saar & Faith Ringgold
Writers:
Mary Morris, Cristina Garcia, Perri Klass, Dorothy Allison, Mary Gordon, Rita Dove, Kate Braverman, Joyce Maynard, Patricia Smith, Alicia Suskin Ostriker, Jane Yolen, Linda Hogan, Rosellen Brown, Ursula K. Le Guin

A Brazilian rival to Gandhi or Mandela

Review Date: 2008-01-07
Brazilian Bishop Dom Helder Camara is one of the greatest leaders of the global human rights movement. His accomplishments in the peaceful overthrow of military dictatorship in Brazil rival those of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, or Nelson Mandela. Here he answers questions concerning his vision and his tactics for peaceful change toward real compassion. For example:
"The main rule, of course, is to absolutely refuse to commit any violence on person's lives or dignity. But there is what we might call a strategy of nonviolent action. This strategy ... is adaptable, depending on the nature of the conflict, and the forces against which the conflict is to be waged. Generally speaking, the strategy of nonviolent action aims to cause the foundations of unjust power to collapse. Oppressive, repressive power rests on resignation, collaboration, and obedience on the part of the people. Nonviolence tries to organize non-collaboration and disobedience by as many people as possible. No power can last long, even by force of arms, against a whole population that refuses to obey it and recognizes another power instead. The strategy also includes a tireless dialogue with half-hearted agents of the unjust power to try to get them to rally to the cause of justice." (p. 92)

Look to the light through the dim glass of the stiff translation

As one who for over a generation has dedicated himself to doing translations to and from the French, as one who lived within a French cloister in the Seventies, I painfully bump against the too stiff translation of this fluid spirituality.
Now more than ever we need this book as a Church community and as individualized Americans.
It draws from a series of questions written by participants in a series of lectures and workshops given by Dom Helder Camara across France in 1983, three years after the martyrdom of the saintly Archbishop Oscar Romero by US paramilitary forces who shot him dead during the offertory of the Mass in his small terminal hospital chapel. This present volume does not mention that martyrdom, yet Dom Helder must have felt its possibility for him as well, as several of the questions falsely yet fashionably accuse him communism for living the true Gospel call to the poor.
Please study carefully this book to discover the true Gospel meaning and message, and the mission of inspiration and action in solidarity with God's poor.
Blessed are the poor. The most moving chaptersof this book are devoted to this ever more important theme. See also the contemporary National Conference of Bishops' Economic Justice for All, available here on amazon. Dom helder also mentions directly with high praise their The Challenge of Peace: God's Promise and Our Response as endearing like a baby he saw being born.
Indeed it is the final two chapters on disarmament and nonviolence which cries out today like a voice in desert, which needs to be heard. It sounds like The Reverend FAther John Dear, another lonesome voice so necessary for each Catholic to study and to hear with action and personal commitment. This book reads like a seed bed for these later writings.
Please, read it and let it take seed in your heart and soul as an expression of the true Gospel of Jesus: PACEM IN TERRIS.

In a readable, engaging style, this book describes the basics of interviewing, including; 1) how to dress; 2)preparation; 3) dealing with questions that you dread; 4) handling inquiries designed to trick you; and 5) organizing your presentation of skills so you can appeal to employers. Print and layout very helpful to people with learning disabilities. A small but helpful portion of the book discusses salary negotiations.
