Survivers of the Holocaust tell their stories
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-02
This book is a compalation of many many books. The author tells the stories of many people who lived threw the holocaust. The stories are all harrowing and tell about the different asspects of the war.

Some of the people were in hiding, some were involved in the kindertransports that took German Jewsish Children to England to live. Some people talked about life in the Ghettos and camps where they witnessed things no human should have had too. There were intervews from people in the resistance, as well as so called "aryans" who witnessed some of the awfull things done during the war.

This is a must read book, very powerfull and hard to put down.

Painful personal testimonies of the Shoah

Lyn Smith is to be highly commended for the work she did in putting together this volume. She interviewed tens of survivors of the Shoah, and presents their testimony in segments gathered around specific themes. Many of the paragraph- length testimonies are soul- shaking.
I was particularly moved by a number of the testimonies of Rena Quint who survived as a child in Bergen- Belsen through the help of others. Her description of her liberation and her life afterwards in the States, her discovery and wonder at this world of freedom is particularly moving.
But there are dozens of others who testify about the injustices and horrors of the Shoah.
It may seem that there are already thousands of books about the Shoah, and that another one makes little sense. But anyone reading this volume will once again understand why telling these stories is necessary and valuable.

If you are into music and the artists that are legends today then this is the book for you. I was especially fascinated with what "Fats" Domino had to say. As is mentioned in the book blurb there are a number of photos that I had never seen before.

Overall if your into music legends then this is a book to buy. Five stars and a hearty recommendation. I'm looking forward to the next volume!

Remembering Ed; Fact and Fantasy

Review Date: 2000-04-23
Wonderful collection of essays on the general theme of who Edward Abbey was. Some of the writers include Wendell Berry, Ed's friend Jack Loeffler, Gary "Jafey Rider" Snyder, Dave Petersen and Terry Tempest Williams. From this partial list of contributors, it's obvious that this is a book full of personal observances about one of the west's most hated and best loved figures. Since his death in 1989, the legend of Ed Abbey has perhaps grown beyond manageability. The essays collected here simultaneously feed that legend, while speaking of the actual person behind the lore. This juxtaposition creates an interesting tension throughout the book, as those who knew the man grapple with the public vs. the private Abbey. Abbey himself is also called to task to reveal a bit of himself through a couple of interviews. In hopes that the issue may never be solved and that the world will continue to discuss Abbey, here is what Ed had to say about himself, taken from the Poetry Center Interview: "The real Edward Abbey -- whoever the hell that is -- is a real shy, timid fellow, but the character I create in my journalism is perhaps a person I would like to be: bold, brash, daring...I guess some people mistake the creation for the author, but that's their problem." Resist Much, Obey Little is essential reading for those who knew Ed, as well as for those who are just discovering him.

Another fellow managed to cover all the eloquent intellectualities, but the simple truth is that this here book is a good look at a great man. Abbey is legendary, indeed, and that's a good thing, for the stuff he defended deserves a hero and the folks he poked mercilessly with his sharp stick wit (just about about all of us, but especially money-grubbing land-rapers and the lackadaisical dogs who can't bother to oppose them) deserved the poking. Buy this book, then let it collect dust until you've read through Abbey's words to discover him for yourself.

This books contains exhaustive research on the medical and societal history of transsexualism, all the theories of its possible causes, everything. Having recently decided to face my own gender issues, I found this book immensely informative and felt a million times less alone. The scientific parts can be a tiny bit dry at times, but the information is priceless and the interviews and firsthand stories are wonderful.

Told from the point of view of someone who doesn't have gender identity disorder, the book explains all the aspects of it, even for someone who doesn't know the issue firsthand--this makes it a really excellent resource for people confused by the actions of their transgendered loved ones. I bought copies for both my parents.

Scientifically researched and very well-written book on gender variance

As a transsexual man, this book is an invaluable resource. I had begun writings for inclusion in a website and went looking for additional books on transsexualism. This book met all my needs. It offers a seemingly thorough analysis of gender identity in regards to activism and science. I got the book from the local public library (yay libraries!!); however, I realized after the first few pages that this book had to become part of my personal library. I have already recommended it to many people and would definitely recommend it to those seeking to broaden their understanding of gender and the cultural oppression transgendered people face. I also highly recommend it to those that are transgendered because it is also a great "power to the people" book. My website will be a call to action to all those that accept and celebrate diversity with the intent of changing the current political and social limitations that have roots in ignorance and oppression. This book buoyed my resolve and validated my existence at a time that I was struggling with feeling oppressed. Thank you Deborah!

Ridiculous Theatre : Scourge of Human Folly : The Essays and Opinions of Charles Ludlam is a true treasure for anyone ridiculous enough to consider a career as an artist. Ludlam, the actor/director/writer/artistic director of the Ridiculous Theatre, knows a lot about creating art and as a result of his experience, has some very strong opinions on the subject. Ludlam writes about what he knows and what he loves -- the theatre. The essays included in this anthology are extremenly insightful and thought-provoking as Ludlam proffers his opinions on every subject from critics to drag to opera (and everything in between). In the end, the reader comes to an understanding of the utter ridiculousness (in a truly wonderful way) of a theatrical life.

demented? genius? demented genius?

Review Date: 2003-05-13
Charles Ludlam was, hands down, one of the most brilliant innovators in postmodern theatre. At a time when many radical theatre-types were resting on their laurels (or regurgitating works they created decades earlier), Ludlam and his constant collaborator/companion, Everett Quinton, were experimenting with new forms, keeping things fresh. Unfortunately (or perhaps not), he's been pidgeonholed by theatre historians as working exclusively in gay theatre; in point of fact, though, while his audience was largely "downtown" and therefore predominantly gay, his influence was felt throughout theatre community.

That's not, however, to say he was a benevolent gay genius. On the contrary: secondhand stories about his professional habits and beliefs are enough to curl the toes of even the cruelest tyrant. That, of course, is why this book is SO enjoyable--and important. Part autobiography, part manifesto, it explains Ludlam's ideas about art, life, and theatre in his own words. And while it's certainly polemic at times, it's very enlightening and always entertaining.

Beautiful...

Review Date: 2002-07-27
As a fan of the 70s and early 80s fashion I found this book to be beautiful. The women capture the look of that era and I was as interested to read about the lasting beauties (Brook Shields, Yasmine Bleeth, Carmen, Farrah Fawcett, Princess Caroline of Monaco) as I was about the stars whose celebrity glow has faded today.

The photos are beautiful. 46 women: models, housewives, journalists, actresses, business women, singers, schoolgirls, they all pose and tell their beauty secrets. There is a before and after make-up shot, with some photos showing and describing the stages in between. Some women are heavily made up while others go for the natural look. Their interviews are as compelling as their photographs. They describe how they perceive beauty, or they criticize it. They reveal their beauty secrets ("I cleanse with yogurt and soap and water. I use a natural unscented moisturizer...I like any kind of cream I can get from the health food store"-Beverly Johnson, "Working up a sweat every day. And going to the sauna. And getting laid once a night"-Janice Dickinson)

As excited as I was to see these beauties and read about their habits, I'm not sure whether a teenager would make out the difference between the girls that lead helthy lives and the ones that don't. Comments such as "I eat next to nothing" or "I never take off my makeup. NEVER. I sleep in it." or "I never look at myself in the mirror" do not promote a healthy lifestyle in my opinion and they are the reason so many young girls today have anorexia, bulimia and self-esteem problems.

But anyway. Fashion can be like that sometimes. To conclude, my favourite photos and interviews were by:

GIA
PATTI HANSEN
CARMEN
JANICE DICKINSON
ORIANA FALLACI
ANNE HEARST
AILEEN MEHLE
POLLY MELLEN
JIL SANDER
BROOKE SHIELDS
LISA VALE

But the most important thing is that what's trully beautiful about these women is their individuality. If we all find what looks good on us and what makes us happy and healthy, we could all make it to the next Scavullo book! Buy it. Enjoy it.

If you've ever worried about exactly what to say at a job interview, worry no more! This book walks you through a wide variety of job interviews, and helps you anticipate questions you will be asked, and will want to ask. And unlike other books I've seen on getting a job, this one even guides you through interviews with job recruiters, plus how to handle job evaluation and promotion interviews once you've got the job and want to keep it, or advance.

Whether you are looking for that first entry-level job or a skilled position, this book has all kinds of appropriate things you can say about yourself, your training and experience. This book provides not just one but several realistic ways to respond to the kinds of questions you might be asked at an interview. Moreover, they are specifically tailored to each of the many kinds of jobs presented.

Scripts for Winning Jobs helps you sail through job interviews with confidence, and get the job you want. It even helps you through the tricky salary negotiations with expressions that diplomatically get you into the salary range you want.

This book is great for people who speak English as a second language, but is also extremely beneficial for native speakers going through the job search process. You can also buy this book with a set of 4 C-D's . It costs more, but listening to the interviews reinforces your reading and helps put the right words on the tip of your tongue when you go to your next job interview.
