Sylvia Landy has created a book specifically for the recent college graduate looking for their first job. Through several businesses, Landy has always hired recent college graduates, mostly as a cost savings measure. She knows what she is talking about, and wants to provide her experiences, and those of others, to assist college graduates with the tools needed to successfully land a job. Not only does she provide the standard resume writing tips, but she also shows the reader how to answer the predictable and not-so predictable interview questions. Things that you may think are common sense, like don't go out to a party the night before an interview, clean up your Facebook and MySpace pages, and record new voice mail greetings, are included. Throughout the book she throws some humorous, and not so funny, anecdotes, that will add to her points. She also addresses those readers who did not graduate with stellar grades or many activities.

There are many books that will help with resume writing, interviewing, and job searching. This book ties it all together for the recent college graduate in a well written and very worthwhile book. Now that you have graduated, you are competing with over a million graduates. You need an "edge," and this book delivers it. I was impressed at the breadth of the topics that Landy covered, not only how to write a letter in advance of your interview, but also how to handle illegal questions (age, sexual preference, religious affiliations), videoconference interviews, what and how to order if you are meeting someone over lunch, and more. Whether you are competing for an internship or full-time employment, this book will provide you the tools necessary to stand out in the crowd and land that job.

My only problem with this book is that it wasn't available when I graduated. :-)

The Quintessential Interview Handbook

If you think that finding a job is comprised of simply submitting a crudely drafted resume on a company's website, you're solely mistaken. Ditch the Flip Flops is the handbook for any recent college graduate who wants to land his or her dream job. Ditch answers all the question a reader could ask about the interview process. It covers everything from how to prepare for the interview, how to answer questions and how to leave a lasting impression even after the interview is over.

I had some reservations about reading a 300 page book pertaining to the interview process, but Landy's wit and humor kept me entertained from start to finish. Passages like, "Speaking of oily ... this is not the way to get noticed in your interview" still make me laugh when I skim through the pages before I have an interview. Ditch is not only the quintessential interview handbook, but it is also an enjoyable read.

Very detailed as it covers every single step!

I could not believe how much information was packed into one book! I loved the questionnaires, the advice, the examples and the further reading and search engines recommended by the author. Truly a bargin for so much information!

Based on the title, I was first attracted to this book as a possible graduation gift. I didn't really see anything else out there with job interviewing fundamentals for twentysomethings. As graduation gifts, I bought a few copies and before wrapping them up, I decided to read one myself. I was really impressed.

I can see how Ditch the Flip-Flops was sorely needed for both internship and full-time employment interview tips. It's definitely geared toward college students and their unique situation in meeting recruiters for the first time. The Q & A section is right on the mark, as are the chapters outlining wardrobe malfunctions as well as interview follow-up strategies, and the management of both phone and in-person meetings (on campus, in the corporate office and other locations).

I think the material is definitely written in a straightforward manner that appeals to college students. While every reader won't tackle Ditch the Flip-Flops cover to cover it's a great resource that can be easily accessed on a chapter by chapter basis.

I continue to give this book as a graduation present because I'm always thanked for it!

Since graduating from college in May and immediately enlisting in a full-scale job hunt, I can only now fully understand the difficulty of separating yourself from the flood of other recent graduates clamoring for post-college employment. The importance lies not only in "selling yourself", but also in determining the qualities you possess which will set you apart as a unique candidate for a desired position. Ditch the Flip-Flops acknowledges this importance and effectively guides readers into determining what positive attributes they have to offer future employers.

The book goes above and beyond your typical interview handbook by dealing with the smaller yet equally important details frequently overlooked by most authors. From specific wardrobe advice, to the pre-interview morning routine, and even to what your body language reveals about you, Ditch the Flip-Flops leaves no stone unturned and acknowledges the seemingly insignificant, yet sometimes crucial particulars that often slip readers' minds in preparing for job interviews.

Author Sylvia Landy takes what could have become a dull, lackluster how-to manual and infuses it with humor and encouragement. While the book's advice is straightforward and practical, Landy provides effective, amusing (and sometimes slightly horrifying) anecdotes to illustrate her points. Readers can approach the job industry with boosted confidence as the book equips them with the tools and attitude necessary to come across as informed, qualified job candidates. The book covers every step of the job-search process from beginning to end; not simply the interview itself, but finding a job opening, building a resume, and even weighing post-interview job offers.

I have no doubt that customers who purchase Landy's book will profit from its advice and gain a new-found confidence in their abilities not only to attain jobs, but to succeed in any future career pursuits.

This book was given to me as a gift by my father and -- as I had not read anything by Terkel before -- I was not sure what to expect. I loved it. It is an enjoyable and easy read, being broken down into individual oral histories. But more importantly, it is inspiring and hopeful without being religious, preachy or shrill. I have recommended it to several people I know.

Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, The New Press, 2003 p. 326

Studs Terkel lends understanding to what it means to be an American by letting Americans speak. His newest addition in his long and celebrated list of books offers a collection of interviews with hopeful people or "hopeholders", history chroniclers, the celebrated and the un-knows. "In the following pages are portraits of the inheritors of the legacy of those past. They range in age from nonagenarians to young ones in their twenties".

Mr. Terkel is free-thinker. He holds a flame of hope. "As we enter the new millennium, hope appears to be an American attribute that has vanished for many, no matter what their class or condition in life. The official word has never been more arrogantly imposed. Passivity, in the face of such a bold, unabashed show of power from above, appears to be the order of the day. But it ain't necessarily so." His interviewer's selection reflects his viewpoint.

I first read his books to bone up on the art of interviewing. My horizons expanded upon reading interviews with various folks such as World War II heroines and heros, and those that had experienced death close up. Now, I read Studs Terkel books for the joy of learning about whatever he finds of interest. My burning question remain: How does he get people to open up, spill their guts, and let their hearts and human spirits shine through?

His introduction offers answers in his guiding voice. He is someone that's lived a free man's life, met amazing people, done amazing things, stood up for what he believed was right, and he is still going strong. His "voice" is that of a "regular guy". He's the kind of individual that has wisdom, wisdom enough to guide you as well as let you decide things for yourself. That seems to help his subjects to "open up".

Those that have read previous Studs Terkel books will not be disappointed with his latest book, Hope Dies Last. Those new to Terkel...well.... Sit back and enjoy and be prepared to be motivated. "Activism need not be a profession in itself, as it is in many cases here. It can be in the writing of a letter to the editor or to your congressperson; it can be in taking part in a local action or a national one, or, for that matter, a worldwide one".

Studs Terkel keeps getting better !

Easy reading, well organized & great topic. He is a literary treasure.

Studs Terkel. I apologize, I cannot continue without prefacing my review without a word or two about this great man, and I am not normally effusive in my praise.

If you wanted someone to try and model your life on, you could do far worse than to choose Studs Terkel. Anyone today could live to be 200 and not see and experience half of what this man has. He was born May 14, 1912, and at the age of 91, he is still going strong. Talk about endurance, about transcending time. My hats off to Terkel.

Anyway, to the review, as you might expect if you've read anything else by Terkel, he continues his intriguing and beguiling brand of oral history, transmitted to us through the written word. His many works have touched on many periods, and many themes, but in this book, Terkel examines hope.

More importantly, Terkel in this book views hope as marked by resistance, activism, working to change the world or make it a better place. It is easy in these times to become dismissive... in an interview Terkel said before he wrote the book, he had the feeling that the nation was as apathetic and hopeless as it hadn't been in a long time. To some extent, that rings true.

But this book isn't just a foray into a depressing land with no hopes or prospects. Some of the military personnel have rather bleak things to say about the future, but despair is the flip side of the coin to hope - to talk about one without speaking about the other would be pointless.

The book's framework is this: Terkel examines how people have perservered, lived, strived, propsered, and died throughout recent American history. Famous people. Unknown people. People from all walks of life. Teachers, social workers, and politicians share the stage with unknown alcoholics, refugees, and disease victims. The results are not uniformly happy, but that is not important - the presence of hope in the face of what you would think of as unendurable odds is the theme. Hope, and its many forms - hope for life, hope for happiness, hope for change, hope for sheer survival.

If I've made this book sound like some kind of "Chicken Soup for the Soul," let me assure you, it isn't. It isn't candy-coated, dumbed-down, or an overly cheery insult to your intelligent. It won't eradicate anyone's cynicism, but I have to think that most people would come away from reading this book feeling better about their country and its inhabitants than before they read it... coming away a little changed themselves as well. And really, what more can you ask for in a book?

I would heartily recommend this book to anyone.

Maintaining Hope in Challenging Times

HOPE DIES LAST is an oral history of various personalities collected by renowned social commentator Studs Terkel. Terkel has collected stories from just about every conceivable category of people: teachers, politicians, clergy people, business people, young people, and old people, you name it, the group is probably represented in this book. Each oral history tells the story of someone who has maintained hope in a challenging or difficult moment. The situations vary, but each is meant to help us navigate in these very trying and uncertain days after September 11, 2001.

In his introduction, Terkel says that "Hope never trickles down. It always springs up." This book will certainly help people see that hope does spring up in third world countries, in violent city streets, in classrooms, churches, and just about everywhere else. This book will be helpful for just about anyone, whether facing a challenge or not. Teachers and clergy people will find the book very helpful since so much of the work of educators and members of eth clergy is keeping faith alive.

This is a fantastic book to use in college classrooms. I had great success teaching it to three of my classes! The students related to the 20-something characters. The writing is just beautiful! Not only is it a presentation of Arab American lives, but a lovely ode to Brooklyn. I highly recommend the author's website to keep updated on his latest events. As Americans become more engrossed in our current political stresses, a book like this seems more timely everyday. And in our post-9/11 society, I think it is becoming so important to be aware of how Arab Americans are being used as scapegoats and discriminated against in a way that seems acceptable to many Americans.
I felt that Bayoumi did such a good job of connecting the modes of past prejudices to our contemporary situation, driving home the point that this country is far from over racism. The stories of the people whom the author follows are at points touching, and nothing makes a stronger example than the lives of actual people.

By taking us inside the lives and minds of young Arab Americans living in Brooklyn, a microcosm of the diverse United States, Bayoumi helps us understand what it means to be young and arab in America today. The short stories covering seven different personalities make the narrative very accessible and the book an easy read. The characters themselves are extremely diverse affording the reader a good coverage of different strata of the Arab American society. From a religious young girl in veil fighting against discrimination, to a marine, a patriotic American fighting in Iraq torn between the Arab and American cultures, to a young grocery store worker inspired by the American dream... each story is unique and heart filled.

What Moustafa Bayoumi captures in his latest work is what many have been yearning for since 9/11 in the Arab American community: an encapsulation and presentation of the voice of the unheard. Too often, our history--even as it unfolds--is told by our neighbors, by our news stations, and by those who seek us harm for perceived personal or communal benefit.

I believe the concept of this book is as important as what fills its pages. Shedding light on the lives of the castigated, Bayoumi engages the outside world with human stories seen through a human lens. Bayoumi masterfully graces the page with a rich and unique style of description, making this read not only intense, but enjoyable.

I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking understanding into the mindset of many Arab Americans today.

As someone who has worked almost 10 years with young Arab-Americans, I found this to be a very insightful glimpse into the lives of a little understood community. So many people talk about young Arab-Americans - a population often described as a "homegrown threat" or somehow radical - yet how often do we hear what they think, in their own words?

In this book, Bayoumi is granted unique access into the lives of these young people, allowing him to tell each story colorfully and to share their most innermost feelings. The internal conflicts they experience as Arabs and Americans are instructive, as they reflect the greatest political and cultural challenges facing our world today.

Most working mothers talk to themselves anyway ... it's the best way to work through our issues, conflicts, etc. This book gives a great framework in which to have these conversations so that they are more productive. The book is organized in such a way that I can pinpoint which chapter will best guide me through my current struggle. I recommend this to any woman trying to balance different facets of her life, whether they be work, family, PTA, volunteer work, etc.

As a working mom with a toddler, I have had limited time (and energy) to reflect on the direction of my career. This book gave me the opportunity to organize my thoughts, think beyond the day to day and see the big picture. The topics and questions in the journal allowed me to think and take risks in a safe and structured way. I was able to focus on these issues around my daughter's schedule. I looked forward to writing in the journal with a cup of coffee early in the morning before my daughter woke up or with a glass of wine at night after she went to sleep! I now feel much more connected with what I want from my career and a better plan on how to get there.

This book is great. A must have for any working mom, aspiring working mom, or working mom in transition who feels overwhelmed, intitmidated or fears her real dream. Taub breaks down the myriad dilemmas and responsibilities we moms/working moms face into little manageable thoughts or questions that almost seem customized for each reader. By asking the reader in a gentle way to look at a particular issue, including taking a look at the reader's past, present and future, Taub passes on a confidence to the reader that you can actually do something about it rather than fear, freeze or get angry. Taub calls these questions "Conversations" and indeed, sometimes it feels like a conversation is being held. By answering these questions, pondering them, or simply reading how Taub resolved her own issues, is inspiring not to mention result-producing. Furthermore, it's the type of book you can read five minutes at a time -- perfect for moms on the go. Taub's success at breaking down the big questions into little ones enables the reader to delve into an issue little by little, as time permits, perfect for all moms. A keeper on any mom or working mom's shelf, counter, car pool line, etc.

A must read book for this excellent new author. Totally an eye opener on how people in other countries live in fear every day of their lives and this war has been going on for years. Myself being naive about how palestinians are treated and how their lives are so different from our own secure world. Americans are so engrossed in their busy lives and we hear very little of what goes on there. The author totally cares about these people and is so compassionate interviewing them. I highly recommend this book.

Cathy Sultan's book is a must-read. Most Americans don't have the opportunity of knowing what is happening to Palestinians in Israel. We mainly hear what our government wants us to hear, about suicide bombers, not about the millions of innocent Palestinians who are living (and dying) in extremely oppressive circumstances. They too want peace. Cathy Sultan provides a well written and well documented glimpse into the pain, humiliation and struggles that Palestinians face on a daily basis. She interviews both Israelis and Palestinians, asks tough and probing questions, and gives us a very readable, informative, and engrossing book. I highly recommend it.

After reading Cathy Sultan's book, one certainly appreciates the freedom that we so easily take for granted here in the United States. Her book was clearly written and very educational. I'm going to recommend my high school age children read it. The people she interviewed were presented in a caring and compassionate manner. The men, women and students interviewed in "Israeli and Palestinian Voices" were diverse and yet ordinary people. After reading this book, I have a far better understanding and appreciation for the issues facing the people in that region of the world.

An unbiased report of both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Review Date: 2006-10-17
First and foremost I firmly believe that Israel has a right to exist and to defend itself. The Jewish people have suffered an incredible amount of persecution over the centuries, culminating in the events of World War II. Had there been a nation firmly representing the Jewish people, then the Germans would not have been able to engage in their extermination tactics. However, that does not justify the deliberate acts of "ethnic cleansing" that the Israelis have carried out since the first days of the emergence of Israel. The actions of the terror organizations the Irgun and Stern Gang in raping and killing Arabs are well known, having been documented by Israeli historians.
In this book, the author interviews Palestinian and Israeli people of all political persuasions. On the Israeli side the spectrum is from those who believe that they have a biblical right to the exclusive use of all the land of Palestine to those who think the only solution is a dual Jewish-Arab state. The Palestinians interviewed tended to be more towards the moderate wing, there were few statements advocating anything along the line of the destruction of Israel.
What you do get out of the book is the understanding that it is Israeli state policy to keep the tightest possible clamps on the Palestinians. Among many other things concrete rubble is dumped in the Palestinian streets to make it difficult for them to travel, centuries old fruit trees are bulldozed down to make room for Israeli settlements, and tariffs collected on goods that go through the Palestinian territories bound for Israel are not paid to the Palestinians. It is also clear that this attempt to keep the Palestinian territories a vassal state of Israel cannot be continued indefinitely.
Another thing that is clear is that the Palestinian people were very tired of the corruption exhibited by the Fatah organization of Yassir Arafat. In reading through the interviews with the Palestinians, one can sense the forces that led to the Hamas victory in their elections. The Palestinians voted for a change, and in their minds, anything was better than what they had.
Sultan has succeeded in presenting both sides of this seemingly irreconcilable conflict in a free and candid manner. The Palestinians describe the actions of the Israelis in the forcible confiscation of Arab land that began back in the forties. The Israelis counter with their history of centuries of persecution and their casualties as a consequence of suicide bombings. One can only hope that at some point both sides will finally realize that past suffering does not justify the persecution of the present and somehow reach an understanding that will allow both to eventually know some form of peace.

This book was my first "Modern Masters" volume, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It has a great interview spanning 'Ringo's perspective on his career, told in the chronological order of the books he worked on. It has his great uncolored artwork and sketches of various comic characters throughout, with a few colored pieces at the end of the book. It was sad though, reading about how he was determined to continue his creator-owned book Tellos, as this book was created before his unexpected passing. If you are a fan of Mike's work than you can't pass this up!

I'll be getting other volumes of Modern Masters for sure now. Next up is Bruce Timm!

A 'must' for any collection strong in comic book history and artists.

Mike Wieringo's first major job was The Flash, and his exciting introduction to the comic book field was followed quickly by drawings of major characters from Superman and X-Men to Fantastic Four. But don't expect the usual reproductions of comics in this celebration: it includes sketches accompanied by an essential interview with Wieringo discussing perspectives, drawing challenges, achievements and comic book history and provides many important keys to understanding Wieringo's works and his place in the industry. A 'must' for any collection strong in comic book history and artists.

Mike Wieringo is one of those artists who sometimes seems overlooked when the talk turns to the top comic artists, but it is certainly company he deserves to be in as proven by being the subject of the latest edition of Modern Masters from TwoMorrows Publishing. The thing I love about Mike is that he's really worked hard to develop a unique style all his own. So many modern artists are quite polished, and yet have little personality to their work. They seem to have all been graduates of the same art school with the same techniques. This is where Wieringo really shines. He's melded a style that combines traditional cartoon art with elements of animation and Manga for a truly unique look.

Mike's life and career in comics is told through a book long interview with Todd Dezago and along the way we get to see dozens of examples of Mike's work including published and unpublished work, some of it from when he was just 11 years old. It's really a great book for aspiring artists. I loved to draw comics quite a bit when I was younger but never felt I had the talent to go anywhere with it. Seeing Mike's early work I couldn't help but think, "I drew as well as that when I was 11!" This is a true testament to persevering and perfecting one's technique and skill. As we see Mike's work in high school when he was doing his own panel comic books and in college, you can see the steady progress he made as an artist.

Mike grew up as an army brat and moved around quite a bit. He talks about how he never had time to make many friends and kept to himself a lot, working on his art. Luckily Mike's dad was a comic book fan and both his parents encouraged him in his goal to become a pro comic artist one day. Mike took a trip to the San Diego Con in 1991 and started showing off his portfolio. He got his break at DC doing several short stories for the Justice League Quarterly anthology title but would soon graduate into his first major job as artist on The Flash, working with writer Mark Waid.

After his run on The Flash, Mike would go over to Marvel and work on Sensational Spider-Man with writer Todd Dezago. This is where I really took notice of his work for the first time. Mike and Tony talk candidly about this very tumultuous period at Marvel as they were going through their bankruptcy and soon had Sensational Spider-Man and other projects canceled. In fact you can see some fantastic unused pencils of Mike's from a She-Hulk & Thing project.

Mike would have an less than enjoyable run The Adventures of Superman before returning to Marvel again to work on the Fantastic Four where he would once again team with Mark Waid for a memorable run, again cut short by Marvel's inept management.

The book concludes with a 32 page gallery of Mike's work. The gallery includes both finished pieces and pencil layouts. There's also an 8 page color section which includes my favorite piece in the book, Mike's rendering of Captain Marvel that would make C.C. Beck proud. TwoMorrows has made another great choice in their Modern Masters series.

This is a nice book for teens and adults about a year-long tour around the fifty states by a pre-teen in an RV with her folks and younger brother. Amy's tour teaches her about geography, the confort of home, the jealousy and withdrawal of friends, and the value of persistence when governors of the fifty states cannot meet with her. I will not tell how she finally gets the last five governors to sign her sweatshirt mementoes of the trip, but her determination and luck pays off. I am a church librarian and bought this book because it has many lessons and is just plain fun reading for our teens. I hope I can get them to read it--they need a lot of pushing to read any kind of material. The fact that Amy mentions her religion throughout the book helped make the sale for me. I am always lookiing for books that have a religious backfround without hitting you over the head with it. This book fits the bill. Thanks, Amy, for an outstanding book.

Excellent book--great stories, great insights!

Our whole family thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was written by a 13-year-old, which gave it interesting insights, yet was extremely well written. We read it aloud during a recent 1,000 mile trip and were inspired by Amy's courage and dedication. The ending was truly inspirational. It's a great book to give to any teenager (my 13-year-old daughter did most of the reading) to inspire them to have goals and reach out to achieve them. Highly recommended!

I am so moved by this story, even after having been exposed to it before. I feel that it is more powerful than some of the best movies I've seen. I also feel great compassion for Bill, due to the pain that he has carried. I truly hope that he has found himself healed through the process of "clearing his name." I hope too that the CDs, tapes and books meet with great success. The story definitely commands it.

This was eye-opening. A friend recommended I listen to this and I am extremely impressed with the lurid detail and strong emotions the interviewee shared. There is no doubt in my mind that William Barnes once lived as Thomas Andrews. This interview helps one understand that who we are and the emotions we feel in this life are driven from a source much deeper than our early childhood experiences.

I BELIEVE IT AND SO WILL YOU!

A wonderful and eye-opening experience. I found the story to be remarkably told, very honest and accurate in terms of the information spoken by William Barnes in his regression. The details and facts will astound you. The emotional scenes will grip you. You will be glad to be a part of this amazing journey.

This audio CD edition is very well put together with narration, regressions and various interviews. I truly believe William Barnes was Tommie Andrews in a past life. And this audio edition does a wonderful job in sharing this reincarnation experience with us.

Overall, this audio edition is highly recommended. It will open your mind and give you an understanding of the story of Titanic seen through Tommie's eyes. Believe me, once you start listening to the story of Tommie Andrews, its hard to put down.

So real, it sent chills up my spine

In this great audio book, which is the companion to "I built the Titanic," Willam Barne's publisher has done an excellent job in editing the actual past-life regression sessions into chronological order. The result is like hearing Thomas Andrews tell the story, step by step, in his own words and his own voice.

So real, it sent chills up my spine.

This is not just a re-hash of the material on the first book. In There is new regression material here, plus an excellent interview with William Barnes, telling how bringing forth the past-life sotry has brought healing and peace of mind in this life. You can also hear a very clear difference between the voice of Tommie and the voice of Bill Barnes. So much more convincxing that a printed book!

I recommend buying both of these "Titanic" audio books -- they really should be considered a two-part set!

I thought this book was great and loaned it to a few friends who have also like it. The most important message in the book for many people will be the fact that "it isn't just you." One friend commented that she felt the entire book was telling her story, helping her understand that what had been happening to her in the workplace was not about her as an individual but reflected a culture that was steeped in old biases.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how many women are perceived and treated in the workplace.

Tells it like it is!

Margaret doesn't sugarcoat the realities of being an executive female. But she's not on a rant, either, and provides plenty of upside and solid strategies. The Naked Truth is recommended reading for women on every rung on the ladder.

Author and executive Margaret Heffernan fearlessly declares that decades of advice telling business women to act like men, follow traditional rules and cleave to heartless stereotypes are wrong. Breathe a sigh of relief. It's not you; "It's the system, stupid!" In her eyes, the business world inherently does not welcome, respect or value women. Refreshingly, instead of blaming women, the author conveys the advice of hundreds of female survey respondents who say men hold the aces in the business world and don't want to share. Honest, funny and sometimes disconcerting, she offers advice, inspiring examples and helpful stories. She explains how to find or create a humane, cooperative, supportive workplace that fits your principles - and how to make a realistic appraisal if you are at the change-it-or-quit stage. The one shortcoming is the author's absolute unstated assumption that women are innately, inevitably more cooperative, honest and caring than men. This stereotype is a two-edged sword, wounding those men who do have sound values, and reinforcing the typecasting that women ought to be sweet and nurturing because it's in their genes. That aside, we recommend Heffernan's clear view of the hurdles that block a woman's path to business success and work-life balance. She confronts painful realities and adapts them, or adapts to them, even if in nontraditional ways. If you have to be one person at work and someone different at home, her dynamic vision can help you pull it all together.

Muy Fantastic!!!

5 stars for certain and a must read for business women. My hat is off to margaret who speaks directly to issues and DOESN'T ask women to be more like men. She presents many different ideas - some her own and some presented by other women. Its wonderful to read a book that speaks to you and you feel involved in. Well done indeed.

The ugly truth about gender relations in the office

Margaret Heffernan has never been afraid to talk about the ugliness that can happen for women in Corporate America. Her new book is no different. It brings up almost every important issue for women trying to climb the traditional corporate ladder. In some cases she offers solutions, either from her own experience and research, or through the shared stories of women she interviewed for the book.

Two things in particular in the book stuck with me. In one section she discusses women and their "relationship" with work. I really liked the use of that word, "relationship." Because I do have a relationship with my work, just like I have a relationship with the people in my life or with money. (I had never really thought about it in that way before.) The second item that struck me was after I read one woman's description of something very sexist that happened in the workplace, I expected the next line to say, "that was ten years ago." Instead, the line was "that was in 2004." I think we need reminding that not everything has changed, and in fact, anything going on now is even worse than ten years ago, because it's 2005, and we all (including the boys) know better.
