It doesnt take comments from people such as myself to speak of the brilliance of Mark Twain (Samuel Clemmons). His body of work simply speaks for itself. If you are new to Twain's work I would highly reccommend that you try reading this novel first. It is short, entertaining, witty, and beautifully portreyed. This novel is worth absultely every penny you pay for it!

Stepping Off the Edge: Learning & Living Spiritual Practice
Short and very sweet. The Diaries present a charming and enlightened view of the relationship between the First Humans. Written late in Twain's life, the Diaries are considered his most personal work. Contain typical Twain wit, iconoclastic thinking and sardonic good will. Adam's later entries are believed to reflect Twain's feelings for his beloved, deceased wife, Livy. Adam and Eve's love for each other and Adam's grief for Eve moved me to tears. Beautifully illustrated.

I truly loved this book and have shared it with many people. Few books are so funny and end with such a good heartwarming message. Not everyone, I have found, thinks it is as funny as I do as their humor obviously needs a little refining. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes to laugh, has a sharp wit, and likes the Twain type of writing style and charm it posesses.
interesting point of view.

I was ordering a bunch of books for children of different ages for a holiday party and picked this one based on its inclusion in the Parents maagazine Best Books of 2006 article. I suppose the $6.99 price should have clued me in, but I just didn't expect a children's book for this age group to be paperback. And the child that I picked this for was very disappointed that all the other kids got hardback books and hers was paperback. I am sure that she will love it once she reads it, but in the excitement of all the gift opening, it was a letdown. This may seem petty, but the book really is beautiful. It just seems really flimsy as a paperback.

You can't go wrong with anything written and/or illustrated by Simms Taback. We bought this originally because I fondly remembered the story from my own childhood, but this surpasses that earlier edition. It is beautifully illustrated and captivating for our kids. They especially like it when you speed read it to them!! We've worn out our first version, but will be ordering another one. My Highest Recommendation!!

I got this book originally from the library for my son who was then just turning 2. We absolutely loved it. It is the kind of book that doesn't get old no matter how many times we read it together. He is not nearly 3, and he loves to sit down and read (recite) this book. Everyone who sees it loves the illustrations and the story itself. One of the touches that I like the most is the lettering. It all appears as a collage, making it very fun to look at. 5 very enthusiastic stars.

As Simms Taback tells the reader at the end of this rollicking, fun-filled adventure: "This Is The House That Jack Built, a favorite rhyme for children for several centuries, was first published in 1755 and probably derived from an ancient Hebrew chant in the 16th century. It was illustrated by Randolph Caldecott in 1878." And now this old and popular chain of events story gets the brilliant Taback treatment. Each clever and creative two page spread dazzles with vibrant color, marvelous, eye-popping detail, and witty asides. Children will revel in all the joyous, manic fun as they linger and explore each intriguing page, finding something new and exciting each time they open the book. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, This Is The House That Jack Built is a timeless masterpiece the whole family can read, share, and laugh over together, and a picture book no home should be without.

What a wonderful book. Recipes just like the ones I grew up with. I even gave them as holiday gifts. Books like these remind us that family memories follow us through our lives in our minds as well as at the dinner table and that we should gather these dishes in writing and hold them dear. This book is a treasure.

I made a few dishes for passover, a lot of the recipes are missing flavor. Some recipes do not have clear instructions, Roasted Chicken has instructions to bake instead of roasting. I am Jewish and my grandma's dishes are way better then Grandma Doralee's dishes, except my grandma cannot seem to give me recipes because she does not measure anything, so every time I follow her directions, the dish turns into a mess. I also did not like that 12 pages of the book are reviews and praises from other people. The book is small as it is, I don't need to spend money on praises. I would not recommend this book. I have to say one thing, her chicken soup is good, but how can you mess that up.

Doralee Patinkin's cookbooks are two of my all-time favorites (and I'm not Jewish, so they should appeal to everyone with taste buds). Every recipe I've tried has been absolutely wonderful. Directions are clear, and each recipe is preceded by a brief description of why it is a favorite. The forward is by actor Mandy Patinkin, and the comments about some recipes include his passion for him. These books are very warmly written, and filled with tried-and-true family favorites which will be just as successful in the readers's homes. Absolutely wonderful!

I tend to collect cookbooks that are fun to read, have interesting graphics, and have recipes that don't require days to prepare. This book is one of them. In addition, in the introduction, Mandy Patinkin (the author's son) writes: "Please try some of my ma's holiday treats and share some of my memories." Who could resist? Not me!

Perhaps if you haven't read these since childhood Sunday school, you still think these are simple stories. These compact stories all have deep issues about life and what it means to be human. I was surprised by the feeling that God may be wresting with what it means to be God and allow humans freedom. There almost seems to be a trial and error approach to creation. The people in Genesis are all exposed as being very human, with fractured families. The people on the video are also very human, and at time the discussions are very personal, like sitting in with an old friend. This book and videos offered an amazing number of views, and one shouldn't view them as dogma. I was particularly surprised by feminist and Koran views. I hope to read further by Burton Visotzky who was a participant. For an example of unique reading of Abraham and Isaac see Kierkegaard's "Fear and Trembling".

Bill is an extraordinary visionary. What a thought to bring together scholars from multiple religions to talk about Genesis. This is a must read. The conversation is insightful and enlightening. No wonder Fundamentalists dislike Bill. He is fully inclusive and working to build bridges across the chasm of beliefs. Understanding will only be built through learning conversations, not by intolerance.

When I watched the PBS series, I locked myself in the room each week so I wouldn't be disturbed. Imagine several bright, articulate folks who weren't arguing over the historicity of the Gensis accounts, but simply looking for their meaning. Moreover, all weren't Biblical scholars. Their ranks included novelists and playwrights who understand the narrative elements far better than I. As I watched I developed favorites who I looked forward to hearing from again and others who drove me batty.
When I bought the book, I found it to be incredibly helpful for me as a preacher to identify the questions that might be asked of the Genesis text that I would fail to ask because of my own biases or my own fear of asking a sacreligious question. The book is especially good in it's examination of the image of God and the wrestling Jacob stories, but perhaps my favorite is the discussion of call and promise, particularly because of strength of the scholars-Robert Alter, Burt Visotzky and my favorite, Lew Smedes.
This book can help us answer the questions people are really asking, instead of the ones we want them to ask. Highly recomended

this is what she would make.
Delicious, festive and family dishes that bring back memories are supplemented with new staples of the American diet, which make this an all around good cookbook for nostalgia and more. The food is hearty, wholesome, easy to prepare and shop for; not special ordering or trips running around town for esoteric ingredients. And like any good grandma's recipies, emphasizes entertaining family and friends with old favorites as well as experimentation.
I highly recommend it.

For both traditional and modernized Jewish soul food, this book has quickly become a treasured resource. The recipies are straightforward, not pretentious or gratutuitiously glamourous, and are delicious and easy to prepare. It's traditional ethnic dishes and more, with a wonderful, friendly emphasis on entertaining and sharing events and holidays with families, making food a part of the memories.

I bought this because I was looking for easy but delicious passover recipes. Doralee Patinkin Rubin really came through for me. Her apple cake and Baked Chicken a l'orange were great. I made a few other recipes and they were thoroughly enjoyed. Her recipes if not all technically kosher come from that great tradition of Jewish women many of us were fortunate enough to have as mothers and grandmothers.
