ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN: High-Energy Rock & Roll Poster ArtReview Date: 2004-07-10
passionate about performing rock & roll. The
poster artists are passionate about creating
artwork reflecting the band's punk rock & roll
ethos and its highly amused worldview.
The poster artwork, some actual advertisements,
some commemoratives, is superb. Many pieces are
frankly mesmerizing. Dark Horse has done an
excellent job of producing the works in accurate
color. Sal Canzonieri, one of the founding
bandmembers, has pulled together all the key
posters and CD artwork that's defined the band's
image since inception.
Electric Frankenstein developed its following
from posting "anonymous" flyers in the streets of
Manhattan, long before their first gig. People
wondered what Electric Frankenstein was supposed
to be. It was an inspired artistic prank, but
thankfully the band turned out to be quite real
indeed.
You can read more about Electric Frankenstein
in ART OF MODERN ROCK, which will be published
this Fall by Chronicle Books.

This book is also a great look at the modern Hi Energy Rock and ROll Revolution that EF(Electric Frankenstein) is leading. Some of the Bills EF has played on are mind boggling. This book also has a nice history of EF that I enjoyed reading and so will you!
Sal Canzonieri has done a great job, leading EF and also creating this book and deserves all the support in the world. If you like your action High High, help EF conquer the World.

Rufus Reid - Evolving BassistReview Date: 2008-03-17
Used for more than 25 years.Review Date: 2007-04-12
One of the two or three must-haves for a jazz bassistReview Date: 2002-06-18
Of all the methods out there, Reid's is the one that has really stood the test of time, and for good reason. He starts the reader off with basic scales and simple patterns for playing over changes. From there it's on through more complex scales and patterns and finally, soloing, illustrated with a number of transcribed classics.
Combine this book with the Simandl book for basic technique (and a good library of jazz albums), and you have just about everything needed to guide the beginning bass player through the intermediate stage. For a player who already had a basic classical technique, this book alone is just about all that's needed to learn to play jazz.
a "must have" for the jazz bass player...Review Date: 2007-04-25
While loosely defined as a method, the "Evolving Bassist" is really more of a well thought out approach to playing the instrument. The skills taught follow several threads of theory and practice, but it's not a beginner tutorial even though very early players will benefit from the material...and continue to benefit throughout their playing career. If one is desirous of a more basic text in the jazz genre then you must get "The Michael Moore Bass Method", probably the best tutorial currently available; the classical "Simandl" material notwithstanding. The two books and the "Evolving..." DVD really are complimentary and easily stand at the forefront of a limited field. Highly recommended.

Not very much selectionReview Date: 2007-02-24
All of The Prophecy is included which makes for an interesting experience.
Many Meetings gives you Elrond's theme and a little bit of the Shire.
The beautiful songs Aniron and May It Be are little more than chords which is still better than nothing.
In Dreams is satisfying due to its accuracy and is hard enough to make it pretty.
Lament For Gandalf is really useless. It's just the same two unapealing music phrases for about 5 minutes.
I was rather disappointed with the lack of music from the movie such as Concerning Hobbits,The Bridge of Kazad Dum,and The Breaking of the Fellowship which they should have included. But I have to give it 4 stars just because I love the soundtrack and anything from it is worth getting.
The best in soundtrack-to-piano music.Review Date: 2004-07-04
The music on the pages can be described as intermediate level. Beginners will have trouble, but intermediates can slowly pick their way through, depending on their experience, and get better with practice.
The front cover is the same design as the DVD poster, and the original movie promotional art. Inside, 26 pages, including four front-and-back pages containing pictures from the movie.
The tracks you can play are:
- In Dreams, the end-credits song featured in the CD track "The Breaking of the Fellowship".
- The Prophecy, the never-used track that was, I believe, intended for the movie's prologue. The sheet music includes the Elvish lyrics, with the translation following at the end of the song.
- Aníron, the theme for Aragorn and Arwen, as sung by Enya. Again, the Elvish is provided in the music, and the translation at the end.
- Lament for Gandalf, featured in the Lothlorien track. It has the haunting sound that is used for the Elves at that part in the movie, but, as the title suggests, is almost a funeral dirge for Gandalf after the Elves learn of his death. Again, Elvish in the music, translation at the end.
- Many Meetings, the cerebral and heavenly theme for the Elven haven of Rivendell. Probably one of my favorite in the book, and one that, once you learn to play it through, will be something you'll want to play over and over.
- May It Be, the other end-credits song (actually, May It Be is the end credits song, and In Dreams is the *other* one) performed once again by Enya. The lyrics don't make a whole lot of sense, but it's still another quiet one to play. Since Enya only uses a smattering of Elvish in her song, the translation is provided within the music.
I think most fans will agree there were better selections that could have been made for the Fellowship of the Ring sheet music...the Hobbit theme, Moria, and the Bridge of Khazad-Dûm to name a few. But for the Lord of the Rings fans, lovers of gorgeous music, and people who are both, this book makes an excellent gift, or a just-for-you purchase!

Guitar Man: A Six-String OdysseyReview Date: 2008-02-08
An OK Book About One Man's Guitar OdysseyReview Date: 2007-11-18
While the story has its merits I think that the author spent too much time describing drug use and other behaviors that many guitarists (myself included) feel are negative stereotypes which leave the false impression that all guitarists use illegal drugs or drink to excess. A lot of musicians use drugs and drink like fish but there are just as many of us out there that do not. This book would have been every bit as interesting to me without the drug stories.
In any event, the book ends shortly after the gig; which went well, all things considered. At the end of it all Mr. Hodgkinson realizes that his dream of performing in a band was only one tentative step forward in his development as a musician and songwriter and he proceeds to work towards correcting bad habits that he picked up in his rush to learn the guitar on the fast track.
Overall it was a satisfying read and very accurately conveyed the hopes, misconceptions and dreams of guitar students everywhere. The sensation was not unlike talking to a student guitarist that was enthusiastic, idealistic and a trifle over-optimistic; like many guitar students I've met.
Inspirational reading for us older wannabe guitaristsReview Date: 2007-05-09
As earlier reviewers have said, the premise of the book sounds a little cheesey, and perhaps suggestive of an unlikely film script, 'untalented latecomer goes on quest and finds hidden guitar skills on the way', but this book is much more than that. It provides a superb potted history of the guitar from a UK/US blues-folk-rock perspective whilst the main protagonist is honing his new found skills. I found it inspiring. Sure, Will Hodgkinson isn't your average Mr Joe Public, he seems to have indirect connections to several key players, which may be helped by his journalist background, and maybe some of his 'memories' are a little odd - he could only have been 5 or 6 years old when Marc Bolan died so can he really recall his TV appearances? And the coincidence with watching "The Servant" just after a night out with Davey Graham, artistic license perhaps? But, these very minor points aside, to all you ageing wannabe guitarists out there - read it, dust off the old guitar and get strumming!
Now 'all' I need to do now is find out how to play 'Anji'!
P.S Whilst researching on the Web it is interesting to note that Davey Graham is on his uppers again - if this is partly through this book and/or Will's article in the Guardian then this is great for all guitar fans!
General-interest collections will love it; music libraries will find it a fine leisure reader's choice.Review Date: 2007-03-06

Filled with pictures, behind the scenes stories, and narratives by all of the principal movers and shakers in the movie, "Hairspray: The Movie Musical" serves as a wonderful guide. The information contained in the book offers a peek inside the creative process. It's amazing the amount of talent and work that goes into an hour and a half movie.
Just as fun as the movie is, this book covers it all, and doesn't leave you hanging. If you have a Hairspray Fan in your family, this is the PERFECT Christmas present: affordable and really, really fun!

Learn intros and endings suitable for use in gigs.
Learn different chord changes besides the typical II-V-I.
Learn some phrases and voicings that help you jump right in,
rather than just seeing the chord changes written out.
(The last chapter is the exception)
Learn how to improvise - If you haven't been able to cross that
bridge, just let yourself wander while playing these samples.
You can't help but hear different melodies in them.
Each sample is presented in a random key, but it is still up the
student to practice them in all keys.
Well worth the price - a fraction of the cost of a piano lesson
for a huge springboard!

An unassuming but important book.Review Date: 2006-08-03
"Single Note Soloing, Volume 1" is the perfect book for those that are interested in jazz and have experience playing the guitar, but want to learn the ins and outs of jazz phrasing. The musical examples in this book (all in notation, no TAB here) are great and Ted's comments include a wealth of information about left and right hand tips, phrasing ideas, and how to use the examples. A pleasant "side effect" of going through this book is your sight-reading will noticably improve, especially in the higher positions (such as the 7th, 8th, and 9th). And for those who might already know the theory involved, it makes a for a great warmup and provides a refresher course in important fundamentals. Even though I knew most of the theory in the book when I first went through it, it was a great learning experience because it filled up the holes in my knowledge, some that I didn't even know were there. That is part of the greatness of Ted Greene. Never does the book have a pretentious or snobby air to it, and his thoughts are always encouraging and inspiring when you read them. Many guitar books create more holes than fill them, because the authors themselves do not have the needed grasp of the fundamentals. There's no need to worry about that here, as Ted was a master at learning (and therefore, teaching) things the right way.
Overall this has to be one of the best books on the subject that I've gone through, especially for a book that is guitar-specific. If you could only choose one book on jazz scales for guitar, choose this one.
