Man, I have read this book beginning to end maybe 10 times.
It is addictive. It reads like a great novel starting with the king stepping down and the princes fighting for the crown.
A must read for comedy addicts and fans of late night

The movie was mildly entertaining, so I decided to check the book out. However, I found myself losing interest in the book quite fast.
The ending result is anti-climatic, of course, since we all know the result of the late-night battle.
The behind the scenes details weren't all that compelling. Just a bunch of head strong, egotistical executives fighting over who they thought deserved Carson's seat as the King of Latenight.
The only insightful part of the book to me was learning how Conan O'brien has won the Late Night show. I had always wondered how such a relative unknown had won the part.

It was a heck of a battle, and some folks didn't exactly play fair. Letterman, by far the more deserving of the "King of Late Night" crown following Carson's unceremonious ousting, tried to win by being the best at what he does. Leno's camp won by using strongarm tactics, bullying, and underhandedness. Even Leno's show "borrows" rather heavily from Dave's old show, partly because his people lured Letterman's chief writers to their side. Leno may be a decent guy (I hear), but his management quite literally stole The Tonight Show for him. Dave was hoping to be let in through the front door, but Leno's camp broke in through a window. The companion HBO movie treatment of this book is also a very entertaining and enlightening dramatization of the basics of this ordeal.

I am a huge Letterman fan and thought Bill Carter spent too much time in this book focusing on Jay Leno.Ive re-read it a couple of times and came up with the same conclusion. The book was far better than that rediculous movie.

It has very interesting content, yet it's repeditive. The writing is very assuming and it leads to speculation as to whether the content is true or just based on rumour. I think there are better books out there to buy if you are interested in the life of Dave.

Reading this book is similiar to browsing through a women's magazine like Hello. For those who don't know anything about the life of Letterman it is in some ways informative but the writing is repetative and somtimes downright insulting to some people it referes to,for examble Lettermans girlfriend Regina.
This book was great.

If you're a devoted fan of David Letterman, this
is THE book for you. Read about Letterman's long
road from being a geeky college student to a
nationwide known talkshow host. Once you begin
reading, you can't stop. A few interesting
images aswell.

If you want to know what Letterman is like off
stage, this is a very good book that contains
many stories and little known facts, but the
writing is tabloid news level. It follows
Letterman's career and personal life from when
he was in high school to when he had The Late
Show. 16 pages of photos.
The writing is very blend, very
repetitive both in contents and in format, and
just very boring in general, not unlike
this review. :)

If you have just discovered the world of TV-Boy, grab a canned ham and a lovely beverage, and settle in for an enjoyable light read. Bill Adler has done a good job outlining the highlights of David Letterman's radio and television career. The uninitiated will also learn about Dave's personal life, including his first marraige, his relationship with co-creator of 'Late Night', Merrill Markoe, and the stalker who once camped out by his pool.
One particularly entertaining chapter is entitled, 'Dave on Dave', which contains snippets of print and television interviews spanning the course of Letterman's career.
For the seasoned fan, however, there is nothing new to be found in 'The Letterman Wit'. I would suggest you read Bill Carter's 'The Late Shift' if you are looking for information on the late night wars, 'Late Night: The Book' edited by Merrill Markoe, if you want a quirky look at the making of the show, and 'The David Letterman Story' by Caroline Latham, if you want a more indepth peak into Dave's personal life.

this is more of a story of the comedy club, and not really a whole lot of comedy is on the cd. I was hoping for more Jim Carrey on the CD, but there wasn't enough to please me. There are some interesting moments on the CD, and it may be good for you if you want to know about the history and so forth of the comedy store.

I bought this book in a bargain bin for a dollar and I wish I could get my money back. This book has absolutley nothing to do with the show, it looks like it was written in about a half hour. It's very lame but not in a funny way, a way that makes you feel sad.
